| 2 | Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein preventative treatment ameliorates aversive stimuli-induced depression显示文摘Previous studies have shown that Lycium barbarum polysaccharide,the main active component of Lycium barbarum,exhibits antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects in treating neurological diseases.However,the therapeutic action of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide on depression has not been studied.In this investigation,we established mouse models of depression using aversive stimuli including exposure to fox urine,air puff and foot shock and physical restraint.Concurrently,we administered 5 mg/kg per day Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein to each mouse intragastrically for the 28 days.Our results showed that long-term exposure to aversive stimuli significantly enhanced depressive-like behavior evaluated by the sucrose preference test and the forced swimming test and increased anxietylike behaviors evaluated using the open field test.In addition,aversive stimuli-induced depressed mice exhibited aberrant neuronal activity in the lateral habenula.Importantly,concurrent Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein treatment significantly reduced these changes.These findings suggest that Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-glycoprotein is a potential preventative intervention for depression and may act by preventing aberrant neuronal activity and microglial activation in the lateral habenula.The study was approved by the Jinan University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(approval No.20170301003)on March 1,2017. | Yun-Wei Fu Yan-Fang Peng Xiao-Dan Huang Yan Yang Lu Huang Yue Xi Zheng-Fang Hu Song Lin Kwok-Fai So Chao-Ran Ren | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,3: | 8 |

| 4 | Risk prediction of hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma in the era of antiviral therapy显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a grave primary liver cancer that has a limited therapeutic option because it is generally diagnosed later in an advanced stage due to its aggressive biologic behavior.The early detection of HCC has a great impact on the treatment efficacy and survival of patients at high risk for cancer.Potential host,environmental,and virus-related risk factors have been introduced.Hepatitis B virus(HBV)is a major cause of end-stage liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis or HCC in endemic areas,and its serologic or virologic status is considered an important risk factor.HCC risk prediction derived from the identification of major risk factors is necessary for providing adequate screening/surveillance strategies to high-risk individuals.Several risk prediction models for HBV-related HCC have been presented recently with simple,efficient,and readily available to use parameters applicable to average-or unknown-risk populations as well as high-risk individuals.Predictive scoring systems of risk estimation to assess HCC development can provide the way to an evidence-based clinical approach for cost-and effort-effective outcomes,capable of inducing a personalized surveillance program according to risk stratification.In this review,the concepts and perspectives of the risk prediction of HCC are discussed through the analysis of several risk prediction models of HBV-related HCC. | Il Han Song So Mi Kim Young Kwang Choo | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,47: | 7 |
| 5 | Effects of lysophosphatidic acid on human periodontal ligament stem cells from teeth extracted from dental patients显示文摘Despite their potential applications in future regenerative medicine, periodontal ligament stem cells(PDLSCs) are difficult to obtain in large amounts from patients. Therefore, maintaining sternness while expanding the cell numbers for medical use is the key to transitioning PDLSCs from the bench to the clinic. Lysophosphatidic acid(LPA), which is present in the human body and saliva, is a signaling molecule derived from phospholipids. In this study, we examined the effects of LPA on sternness maintenance in human PDLSCs. Several spindle-shaped and fibroblast-like periodontal ligament stem-like cell lines were established from PDLSC isolation. Among these cell lines, the most morphologically appropriate cell line was characterized. The expression levels of OCT4, NANOG(a stem cell marker), and CD90(a mesenchymal stem cell marker) were high. However, CD73(a negative marker of mesenchymal stem cells) expression was not observed. Notably, immunofluorescence analysis identified the expression of STRO-1, CD146(a mesenchymal stem cell marker), and sex determining region Y-box 2 at the protein level. In addition, lipid droplets were stained by Oil red O after the induction of adipogenesis for 21 days, and mineralized nodules were stained by Alizarin Red S after the induction of osteogenesis for 14 days. Alkaline phosphate staining also demonstrated the occurrence of osteogenesis. In summary, we established a human PDLSC line, which could be applied as a cell source for tissue regeneration in dental patients. | 6 | Surgical intervention combined with weight-bearing walking training improves neurological recoveries in 320 patients with clinically complete spinal cord injury:a prospective self-controlled study显示文摘Although a large number of trials in the SCI field have been conducted,few proven gains have been realized for patients.In the present study,we determined the efficacy of a novel combination treatment involving surgical intervention and long-term weight-bearing walking training in spinal cord injury(SCI)subjects clinically diagnosed as complete or American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale(AIS)Class A(AIS-A).A total of 320 clinically complete SCI subjects(271 male and 49 female),aged 16–60 years,received early(≤7 days,n=201)or delayed(8–30 days,n=119)surgical interventions to reduce intraspinal or intramedullary pressure.Fifteen days post-surgery,all subjects received a weight-bearing walking training with the“Kunming Locomotion Training Program(KLTP)”for a duration of 6 months.The neurological deficit and recovery were assessed using the AIS scale and a 10-point Kunming Locomotor Scale(KLS).We found that surgical intervention significantly improved AIS scores measured at 15 days post-surgery as compared to the pre-surgery baseline scores.Significant improvement of AIS scores was detected at 3 and 6 months and the KLS further showed significant improvements between all pair-wise comparisons of time points of 15 days,3 or 6 months indicating continued improvement in walking scores during the 6-month period.In conclusion,combining surgical intervention within 1 month post-injury and weight-bearing locomotor training promoted continued and statistically significant neurological recoveries in subjects with clinically complete SCI,which generally shows little clinical recovery within the first year after injury and most are permanently disabled.This study was approved by the Science and Research Committee of Kunming General Hospital of PLA and Kunming Tongren Hospital,China and registered at ClinicalTrials.gov(Identifier:NCT04034108)on July 26,2019. | Yansheng Liu Jia-Xin Xie Fang Niu Zhexi Xu Pengju Tan Caihong Shen Hongkun Gao Song Liu Zhengwen Ma Kwok-Fai So Wutian Wu Chen Chen Sujuan Gao Xiao-Ming Xu Hui Zhu | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,5: | 3 |
| 7 | Melatonin alleviates alcoholic liver disease via EGFR-BRG1-TERT axis regulation显示文摘Chronic alcohol consumption causes liver steatosis,cell death,and inflammation.Melatonin(MLT)is reported to alleviate alcoholic liver disease(ALD)-induced injury.However,its direct regulating targets in hepatocytes are not fully understood.In the current study,a cell-based screening model and a chronic ethanol-fed mice ALD model were used to test the protective mechanisms of MLT.MLT ameliorated ethanol-induced hepatocyte injury in both cell and animal models(optimal doses of 10μmol/L and 5 mg/kg,respectively),including lowered liver steatosis,cell death,and inflammation.RNA-seq analysis and loss-of-function studies in AML-12 cells revealed that telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT)was a key downstream effector of MLT.Biophysical assay found that epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)on the hepatocyte surface was a direct binding and regulating target of MLT.Liver specific knock-down of Tert or Egfr in the ALD mice model impaired MLT-mediated liver protection,partly through the regulation of nuclear brahma-related gene-1(BRG1).Long-term administration(90 days)of MLT in healthy mice did not cause evident adverse effect.In conclusion,MLT is an efficacious and safe agent for ALD alleviation.Its direct regulating target in hepatocytes is EGFR and downstream BRG1-TERT axis.MLT might be used as a complimentary agent for alcoholics. | Zhaodi Che Yali Song Chengfang Xu Wei Li Zhiyong Dong Cunchuan Wang Yixing Ren Kwok-Fai So George L.Tipoe Fei Wang Jia Xiao | 2023 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2023,13,1: | 2 |

| 15 | Selecting and applying quantification models for ecosystem services to forest ecosystems in South Korea显示文摘There is growing interest in using ecosystem services to aid development of management strategies that target sustainability and enhance ecosystem support to humans. Challenges remain in the search for methods and indicators that can quantify ecosystem services using metrics that are meaningful in light of their high priorities.We developed a framework to link ecosystems to human wellbeing based on a stepwise approach. We evaluated prospective models in terms of their capacity to quantify national ecosystem services of forests. The most applicable models were subsequently used to quantify ecosystem services. The Korea Forest Research Institute model satisfied all criteria in its first practical use. A total of 12 key ecosystem services were identified. For our case study, we quantified four ecosystem functions, viz. water storage capacity in forest soil for water storage service, reduced suspended sediment for water purification service, reduced soil erosion for landslide prevention service, and reduced sediment yield for sediment regulation service. Water storage capacity in forest soil was estimated at 2142 t/ha,and reduced suspended sediment was estimated at 608 kg/ha. Reduced soil erosion was estimated at 77 m^3/ha, and reduced sediment yield was estimated at 285 m^3/ha. These results were similar to those reported by previous studies.Mapped results revealed hotspots of ecosystem services around protected areas that were particularly rich in biodiversity. In addition, the proposed framework illustrated that quantification of ecosystem services could be supported by the spatial flow of ecosystem services.
