1Esophageal squamous cell cancer in a highly endemic region显示文摘AIM: To identify risk factors associated with esophageal cancer in Zambia and association between dietary intake and urinary 8-iso prostaglandin F2α(8-iso PGF2α).METHODS: We conducted a prospective, case control study at the University Teaching Hospital. Subjects included both individuals admitted to the hospital and those presenting for an outpatient upper endoscopy. Esophageal cancer cases were compared to age and sex-matched controls. Cases were defined as patients with biopsy proven esophageal cancer; controls were defined as subjects without endoscopic evidence ofesophageal cancer. Clinical and dietary data were collected using a standard questionnaire, developed a priori. Blood was collected for human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) serology. Urine was collected, and 8-iso PGF2α was measured primarily by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and expressed as a ratio to creatinine.RESULTS: Forty five controls(mean age 54.2 ± 15.3, 31 male) and 27 cases(mean age 54.6 ± 16.4, 17 males) were studied. Body mass index was lower in cases(median 16.8) than controls(median 23.2), P = 0.01. Histopathologically, 25/27(93%) were squamous cell carcinoma and 2/27(7%) adenocarcinoma. More cases smoked cigarettes(OR = 11.24, 95%CI: 1.37-92.4, P = 0.02) but alcohol consumption and HIV seropositivity did not differ significantly(P = 0.14 for both). Fruit, vegetables and fish consumption did not differ significantly between groups(P = 0.11, 0.12, and 0.10, respectively). 2Interrelationship between soil depth and soil properties of Pieniny National Park forest(Poland)显示文摘The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between soil biota such as microbial activity,soil fauna(e.g.,earthworms and enchytraeids),and soil physical and chemical properties.The study area was located in Pieniny National Park(PNP)in the Carpathian Mountains in southern Poland.Soil samples were collected from six forest monitoring areas of PNP from two soil layers(at 0–15 cm and 15–30 cm down,respectively).The investigated soils were classified to eutric cambisols and had silt or silt loam soil texture.Upon analysis,soil aggregate stability index was connected with other physical,chemical,and biological soil properties.It was noted that the stability index of 3 mm to 5 mm soil aggregates influenced pH and dissolved organic carbon.The stability index of 2 mm to 3 mm soil aggregates was positively correlated with dissolved organic carbon,soil moisture,microbial biomass carbon,total organic carbon,total nitrogen,and enchytraeid density,and negatively correlated with bulk density,particle density,porosity,and permanent wilting point.The stability index of 1 mm to 2 mm soil aggregates was positively correlated with total nitrogen,enchytraeid and earthworm density and negatively correlated with particle density,porosity,and permanent wilting point.The study has shown what factors create a stable soil structure in the forest soils of PNP.Justyna SOKO?OWSKA Agnieszka JóZEFOWSKA Karolina WO?NICA Tomasz ZALESKI 2019Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,7:2
3Insecticide resistance in malaria-transmitting mosquitoes in Zimbabwe: a review显示文摘Malaria is a global public health problem,with about 3.2 billion people at risk of infection.The populations at risk mainly reside in Africa,Asia and America,with African populations accounting for the largest burden of the disease.In 2013,close to 198 million malaria cases were reported,leading to 584,000 deaths.Much(90%)of the mortality rates were recorded from the World Health Organization(WHO)database in the African region and 78%of these occurred in children under the age of five.In Zimbabwe,approximately half of the population is at risk of infection with malaria.Insecticide residual spraying(IRS)has been documented as an effective way to control malaria and has been adopted globally by the WHO and national governments.However,both insecticide resistance and climate change threaten to reverse the progress made by IRS in malaria control.Resistance has been reported in all four classes of insecticides approved by the WHO for vector control intervention.Variability of environmental temperature is suspected to complicate the situation through alteration in the genetic structure,and enzyme and protein profiles of mosquitoes.In Zimbabwe,little research has been done on the interaction between climate change,temperature variability and insecticide resistance in malarial mosquitoes over time.Such information is important for informing policies on insecticide selection for IRS.We reviewed literature on insecticide sensitivity among malarial mosquitoes in Zimbabwe from 1972 to 2014.International peer-reviewed articles on insecticide sensitivity in Zimbabwe,published in English in this time period,were searched using MEDLINE®(PubMed),Google Scholar,Google and grey literature.Eight publications were eligible for the present study,with one of the articles being a review paper.Six articles covered insecticide resistance,while the other two articles,published in 2000,were about the absence of resistance.Contradicting resistance results were reported in 2014.The insecticide sensitivity status and distribution of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes are still under debate in Zimbabwe,as studies report differing results.The resistance trend in Zimbabwe is characterised by fluctuations in the status of the sensitivity of existing insecticides.Inconsistencies in data collection methods may be responsible for the inconsistencies in the results.None of the studies have determined a link between climate/temperature variability and insecticide resistance as yet.The current insecticide sensitivity status of mosquitoes still needs to be verified.White Soko Moses J.Chimbari Samson Mukaratirwa 2015Infectious Diseases of Poverty2015,4,1:2
4Method of forecasting seismic energy induced by longwall exploitation based on changes in ground subsidence显示文摘A method of forecasting total seismic energy induced by longwall exploitation, based on changes in ground subsidence, is presented in the form of a linear regression model with one with one independent variable. In the method, ground subsidence is described with a cross-section area of a subsidence trough Pw along a line of observations in the direction of an advancing longwall front, approximately along the axis of the longwall area. Total seismic energy is determined on the basis of seismic energy data of tremors induced by exploitation. The presentation consists of a detailed method and evaluation of its predictive ability for the area of longwall exploitation within the region of one of the coal mines in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. This method can be used for forecasting the total seismic energy released by tremors within the area directly connected with the exploitation, in which the seismic activity induced by this exploitation occurs. The estimation of the parameters of the determined model should each time be carried out with investigations of the correctness of the model. 5Hyperdry human amniotic membrane application as a wound dressing for a full-thickness skin excision after a third-degree burn injury显示文摘Background:Severe burn injuries create large skin defects that render the host susceptible to bacterial infections.Burn wound infection often causes systemic sepsis and severe septicemia,resulting in an increase in the mortality of patients with severe burn injuries.Therefore,appropriate wound care is important to prevent infection and improve patient outcomes.However,it is difficult to heal a third-degree burn injury.The aim of this studywas to investigate whether hyperdry human amniotic membrane(HD-AM)could promote early granulation tissue formation after full-thickness skin excision in third-degree burn injury sites in mice.Methods:After the development of HD-AM and creation of a third-degree burn injury model,the HD-AM was either placed or not placed on the wound area in the HD-AM group or HD-AM group,respectively.The groups were prepared for evaluation on postoperative days 1,4 and 7.Azan staining was used for granulation tissue evaluation,and estimation of CD163,transforming growth factor beta-1(TGF-β1),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),CD31,alpha-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)and Iba1 expression was performed by immunohistochemical staining.Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction(PCR)was used to investigate gene expression of growth factors,cell migration chemokines and angiogenic and inflammatory markers.Results:The HD-AM group showed significant early and qualitatively good growth of granulation tissue on the full-thickness skin excision site.HD-AM promoted early-phase inflammatory cell infiltration,fibroblast migration and angiogenesis in the granulation tissue.Additionally,the early infiltration of cells of the immune system was observed.Conclusions:HD-AM may be useful as a new wound dressing material for full-thickness skin excision sites after third-degree burn injuries,and may be a new therapeutic technique for improving the survival rate of patients with severe burn injuries.Jiro Oba Motonori Okabe Toshiko Yoshida Chika Soko Moustafa Fathy Koji Amano Daisuke Kobashi Masahiro Wakasugi Hiroshi Okudera 2020Burns & Trauma2020,8,1:2
