| 1 | Warming changes plant competitive hierarchy in a temperate steppe in northern China显示文摘Aims Quantifying changes in plant growth and interspecific interactions,both of which can alter dominance of plant species,will facilitate explanation and projection of the shifts in species composition and community structure in terrestrial biomes expected under global warming.We used an experimental warming treatment to examine the potential influence of global warming on plant growth and interspecific interactions in a temperate steppe in northern China.Materials and methods Six dominant plant species were grown in monoculture and all 15 two-species mixtures for one growing season under ambient and elevated temperatures in the field.Temperature was manipulated with infrared radiators.Important findings Total biomass of all the six plant species was increased by 34–63%in monocultures and 20–76%in mixtures.The magnitude of the warming effect on biomass was modified by plant interactions.Experimental warming changed the hierarchies of both competitive response and competitive effect.The competitive ability(in terms of response and effect)of one C4 grass(Pennisetum centrasiaticum)was suppressed,while the competitive abilities of one C3 forb(Artemisia capillaris)and one C3 grass(Stipa krylovii)were enhanced by experimental warming.The demonstrated alterations in growth and plant interactions may lead to changes in community structure and biodiversity in the temperate steppe in a warmer world in the future. | Shuli Niu Shiqiang Wan | 2008 | Journal of Plant Ecology2008,1,2: | 31 |
| 2 | Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality显示文摘Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink(referred to as terrestrial C sink) is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality target.To better understand the characteristics of terrestrial C sinks and their contribution to carbon neutrality,this review summarizes major progress in terrestrial C budget researches during the past decades,clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks in China and around the world,and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality target.According to recent studies,the global terrestrial C sink has been increasing from a source of (-0.2±0.9) Pg C yr^(-1)(1 Pg=1015g)in the 1960s to a sink of (1.9±1.1) Pg C yr^(-1) in the 2010s.By synthesizing the published data,we estimate terrestrial C sink of 0.20–0.25 Pg C yr^(-1) in China during the past decades,and predict it to be 0.15–0.52 Pg C yr^(-1) by 2060.The terrestrial C sinks are mainly located in the mid-and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere,while tropical regions act as a weak C sink or source.The C balance differs much among ecosystem types:forest is the major C sink;shrubland,wetland and farmland soil act as C sinks;and whether the grassland functions as C sink or source remains unclear.Desert might be a C sink,but the magnitude and the associated mechanisms are still controversial.Elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentration,nitrogen deposition,climate change,and land cover change are the main drivers of terrestrial C sinks,while other factors such as fires and aerosols would also affect ecosystem C balance.The driving factors of terrestrial C sink differ among regions.Elevated CO_(2) concentration and climate change are major drivers of the C sinks in North America and Europe,while afforestation and ecological restoration are additionally important forcing factors of terrestrial C sinks in China.For future studies,we recommend the necessity for intensive and long-term ecosystem C monitoring over broad geographic scale to improve terrestrial biosphere models for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics under various climate change and policy scenarios. | Yuanhe Yang Yue Shi Wenjuan Sun Jinfeng Chang Jianxiao Zhu Leiyi Chen Xin Wang Yanpei Guo Hongtu Zhang Lingfei Yu Shuqing Zhao Kang Xu Jiangling Zhu Haihua Shen Yuanyuan Wang Yunfeng Peng Xia Zhao Xiangping Wang Huifeng Hu Shiping Chen Mei Huang Xuefa Wen Shaopeng Wang Biao Zhu Shuli Niu Zhiyao Tang Lingli Liu Jingyun Fang | 2022 | Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5: | 32 |

| 4 | Establishment of a new tropospheric delay correction model over China area显示文摘The tropospheric delay is one of the main error sources for radio navigation technologies and other ground-or space-based earth observation systems. In this paper, the spatial and temporal variations of the zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD), especially their dependence on altitude over China region, are analyzed using ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast) pressure-level atmospheric data in 2004 and the ZTD series in 1999-2007 measured at 28 GPS stations from the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONC). A new tropospheric delay correction model (SHAO) is derived and a regional realization of this model for China region named SHAO-C is established. In SHAO-C model, ZTD is modeled directly by a cosine function together with an initial value and an amplitude at a reference height in each grid, and the variation of ZTD along altitude is fitted with a second-order polynomial. The coefficients of SHAO-C are generated using the meteorology data in China area and given at two degree latitude and longitude interval, featuring regional characteristics in order to facilitate a wide range of navigation and other surveying applications in and around China. Compared with the EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) model, which has been used globally and recommended by the European Union Wide Area Augmentation System, the ZTD prediction (in form of spatial and temporal projection) accuracy of the SHAO-C model is significantly improved over China region, especially at stations of higher altitudes. The reasons for the improvement are: (1) the reference altitude of SHAO-C parameters are given at the average height of each grid, and (2) more detailed description of complicated terrain variations in China is incorporated in the model. Therefore, the accumulated error at higher altitude can be reduced considerably. In contrast, the ZTD has to be calculated from the mean sea level with EGNOS and other models. Compared with the direct estimation of ZTD from the 28 GPS stations, the accuracy of the derived ZTD using the SHAO-C model can be improved by 60.5% averagely compared with the EGNOS model. | 5 | Polyamine Accumulation in Transgenic Tomato Enhances the Tolerance to High Temperature Stress显示文摘Polyamines play an important role in plant response to abiotic stress.S-adenosyl-l-methionine decarboxylase(SAMDC) is one of the key regulatory enzymes in the biosynthesis of polyamines.In order to better understand the effect of regulation of polyamine biosynthesis on the tolerance of high-temperature stress in tomato,SAMDC cDNA isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was introduced into tomato genome by means of Agrobacterium tumefaciens through leaf disc transformation.Transgene and expression was confirmed by Southern and Northern blot analyses,respectively.Transgenic plants expressing yeast SAMDC produced 1.7-to 2.4-fold higher levels of spermidine and spermine than wild-type plants under high temperature stress,and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity and the protection of membrane lipid peroxidation was also observed.This subsequently improved the efficiency of CO2 assimilation and protected the plants from high temperature stress,which indicated that the transgenic tomato presented an enhanced tolerance to high temperature stress(38℃) compared with wild-type plants.Our results demonstrated clearly that increasing polyamine biosynthesis in plants may be a means of creating high temperature-tolerant germplasm. | Lin Cheng Yijing Zou Shuli Ding Jiajing Zhang Xiaolin Yu Jiashu Cao Gang Lu | 2009 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2009,51,5: | 16 |

Because of the strong variation of water vapor in atmosphere and limited spatio-temporal solutions of traditional ob- servation technique, the initial water vapor field of numerical weather forecast model can not accurately be described. At present, using GPS slant observa- tions to study water vapor profile is very popular in the world. Using slant water vapor(SWV) observa- tions from Shanghai GPS network,we diagnose the three-dimensional(3D) water vapor structure over Shanghai area firstly in China. In water vapor tomo- graphy, Gauss weighted function is used as horizon- tal constraint, the output of numerical forecast is used as apriori information, and boundary condition is also considered. For the problem without exact apriori weights for observations, estimation of variance components is introduced firstly in water vapor to- mography to determine posteriori weights. Robust estimation is chosen for reducing the effect of blun- ders on solutions. For the descending characteristic of water vapor with height increasing, non-equal weights are used along vertical direction. Compari- sons between tomography results and the profile provided by numerical model (MM5) show that the forecasted moisture fields of MM5 can be improved obviously by GPS slant water vapor. | 10 | Comparison of the protective effects of resveratrol and pterostilbene against intestinal damage and redox imbalance in weanling piglets显示文摘Background: Evidence indicates that early weaning predisposes piglets to intestinal oxidative stress and increases the risk of intestinal dysfunction;however, there are minimal satisfactory treatment strategies for these conditions.This study investigated the potential of resveratrol and its analog, pterostilbene, as antioxidant protectants for regulating intestinal morphology, barrier function, and redox status among weanling piglets.Methods: A total of 144 piglets were selected at 21 days of age and randomly allocated into one of four treatment groups, each of which included six replicates. Piglets in a sow-reared control group were suckling normally between ages 21 and 28 days, while those in weaned groups were fed a basal diet, supplemented with either 300 mg/kg of resveratrol or with 300 mg/kg of pterostilbene. Parameters associated with intestinal injury and redox status were analyzed at the end of the feeding trial.Results: Early weaning disrupted the intestinal function of young piglets, with evidence of increased diamine oxidase activity and D-lactate content in the plasma, shorter villi, an imbalance between cell proliferation and apoptosis, an impaired antioxidant defense system, and severe oxidative damage in the jejunum relative to suckling piglets. Feeding piglets with a resveratrol-supplemented diet partially increased villus height(P = 0.056) and tended to diminish apoptotic cell numbers(P = 0.084) in the jejunum compared with those fed a basal diet. Similarly, these beneficial effects were observed in the pterostilbene-fed piglets. Pterostilbene improved the feed efficiency of weanling piglets between the ages of 21 and 28 days;it also resulted in diminished plasma diamine oxidase activity and D-lactate content relative to untreated weaned piglets(P < 0.05). Notably, pterostilbene restored jejunal antioxidant capacity, an effect that was nearly absent in the resveratrol-fed piglets. | 11 | Species-specific Response of Photosynthesis to Burning and Nitrogen Fertilization显示文摘The present study was conducted to examine photosynthetic characteristics of three dominant grass species (Agropyron cristatum,Leymus chinensis,and Cleistogenes squarrosa) and their responses to burning and nitrogen fertilization in a semiarid grassland in northern China. Photosynthetic rate (Pn),stomatal conductance (gs),and water use efficiency (WUE) showed strong temporal variability over the growing season. C. squarrosa showed a significantly higher Pn and WUE than A. cristatum and L. chinensis. Burning stimulated Pn of A. cristatum and L. chinensis by 24–59% (P < 0.05) in the early growing season,but not during other time periods. Light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in A. cristatum and the maximum apparent quantum yield (Φmax) in A. cristatum and L. chinensis were significantly enhanced by burning (16–67%) in both the fertilized and unfertilized plots. The main effect of burning on Pn,Pmax and Φmax was not significant in C. squarrosa. The burning-induced changes in soil moisture could explain 51% (P =0.01) of the burning-induced changes in Pn of the three species. All three species showed positive responses to N fertilization in terms of Pn,Pmax,and Φmax. The stimulation of Pn under N fertilization was mainly observed in the early growing season when the soil extractable N content was significantly higher in the fertilized plots. The N fertilization-induced changes in soil extractable N content could explain 66% (P = 0.001) of the changes in Pn under N fertilization. | 12 | Precipitation regulates plant gas exchange and its long-term response to climate change in a temperate grassland显示文摘Aims Climate change largely impacts ecosystem carbon and water cycles by changing plant gas exchange,which may further cause positive or negative feedback to global climate change.However,long-term global change manipulative experiments are seldom conducted to reveal plant ecophysiological responses to climatic warming and altered precipitation regimes.Methods An 8-year field experiment with both warming and increased precipitation was conducted in a temperate grassland in northern China.We measured leaf gas exchange rates(including plant photosynthesis,transpiration and instantaneous water use efficiency[WUE])of two dominant plant species(Stipa sareptana var.krylovii and Agropyron cristatum)from 2005 to 2012(except 2006 and 2010)and those of other six species from 2011 to 2012.Important Findings Increased precipitation significantly stimulated plant photosynthetic rates(A)by 29.5%and 19.9%and transpiration rates(E)by 42.2%and 51.2%for both dominant species S.sareptana var.krylovii and A.cristatum,respectively,across the 8 years.Similarly,A and E of the six plant functional types were all stimulated by increased precipitation in 2011 and 2012.As the balance of A and E,the instantaneous WUEs of different plant species had species-specific responses to increased precipitation.In contrast,neither warming nor its interaction with increased precipitation significantly affected plant leaf gas exchange rates.Furthermore,A and E of the two dominant species and their response magnitudes to water treatments positively correlated with rainfall amount in July across years.We did not find any significant difference between the short-term versus long-term responses of plant photosynthesis,suggesting the flexibility of leaf gas exchange under climate change.The results suggest that changing precipitation rather than global warming plays a prominent role in determining production of this grassland in the context of climate change. | Bing Song Shuli Niu Shiqiang Wan | 2016 | Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,5: | 8 |

| 20 | Assessing soil thickness in a black soil watershed in northeast China using random forest and field observations显示文摘Soil thickness determines the soil productivity in the black soil region of northeast China,which is important for national food security.Existing information on the spatial variation of black soil thickness is inadequate.In this paper,we propose a model framework for spatial estimation of the black soil thickness at the watershed scale by integrating field observations,unmanned aerial vehicle variations of topography,and satellite variations of vegetation with the aid of random forest.We sampled 141 sample profiles over a watershed and identified the black soil thickness based on indices of the mollic epipedon.Topographic variables were derived from a digital elevation model and vegetation variables were derived from Landsat 8 imagery.Random forest was used to determine the relationship between black soil thickness and environmental variables.The resulting model explained 61%of the black soil thickness spatial variation,which was more than twice that of traditional interpolation methods(ordinary kriging,universal kriging and inverse distance weighting).Topographic variables contributed the most toward explaining the thickness,followed by vegetation indices.The black soil thickness over the watershed had a clear catenary soil pattern,with thickest black soil in the low depositional areas and thinnest at the higher elevations that drain into the low areas.The proposed model framework will improve estimates of soil thickness in the region of our study. | Shuai Zhang Gang Liu Shuli Chen Craig Rasmussen Baoyuan Liu | 2021 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2021,9,1: | 5 |
