| 1 | Acupuncture for irritable bowel syndrome: A blinded placebo-controlled trial显示文摘AIM: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder and many patients fail to find adequate relief from conventional therapies for their symptoms. This study tests the claim that acupuncture is effective for a majority of these patients.METNODS: A prospective, blinded, sham acupuncturecontrolled trial of traditional Chinese acupuncture was performed at a single postgraduate teaching hospital in Europe. Sixty patients with well-established IBS were recruited. The blinded comparator was sham acupuncture administered by the second of two acupuncturists who alone was aware of the randomization, and who otherwise followed the prescription of the first. The primary endpoint was a defined fall in the symptom score at 13 wk (by intention to treat). The prior expectation was a 30%placebo response, and a response rate of 70% from acupuncture, for which the study was adequately powered.RESULTS: Patients in treated and sham groups improved significantly during the study-mean improvement in scores being equal (minus 1.9) and significant for both (P<0.05;one-tailed t test). There was a small numeric but nonsignificant difference between the response rate in patients receiving acupuncture (40.7%) and sham treatment (31.2%). Several secondary end-points marginally favored active treatment, but an improved symptom score of any degree of magnitude occurred more often with sham therapy (65.6% vs 59.2%). | 2 | Hepatitis C virus in Pakistan:A systematic review of prevalence,genotypes and risk factors显示文摘In Pakistan more than 10 million people are living with Hepatitis C virus (HCV), with high morbidity and mortality. This article reviews the prevalence, genotypes and factors associated with HCV infection in the Pakistani population. A literature search was performed by using the keywords; HCV prevalence, genotypes and risk factors in a Pakistani population, in Pubmed, PakMediNet and Google scholar. Ninetyone different studies dating from 1994 to May 2009 were included in this study, and weighted mean and standard error of each population group was calculated. Percentage prevalence of HCV was 4.95% ± 0.53% in the general adult population, 1.72% ± 0.24% in the pediatric population and 3.64% ± 0.31% in a young population applying for recruitment, whereas a very high 57% ± 17.7% prevalence was observed in injecting drug users and 48.67% ± 1.75% in a multi-transfused population. Most prevalent genotype of HCV was 3a. HCV prevalence was moderate in the general population but very high in injecting drug users and multi-transfused populations. This data suggests that the major contributing factors towards increased HCV prevalence include unchecked blood transfusions and reuse of injection syringes. | 5 | Dual-specificity phosphatase 6(DUSP6): a review of its molecular characteristics and clinical relevance in cancer显示文摘Mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs) are the main regulators of cellular proliferation, growth, and survival in physiological or pathological conditions. Aberrant MAPK signaling plays a pivotal role in carcinogenesis, which leads to development and progression of human cancer. Dual-specificity phosphatase 6(DUSP6), a member of the MAPK phosphatase family, interacts with specifically targeted extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 via negative feedback regulation in the MAPK pathway of mammalian cells. This phosphatase functions in a dual manner, pro-oncogenic or tumor-suppressive, depending on the type of cancer. To date, the tumor-suppressive role of DUSP6 has been demonstrated in pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal squamous cell and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and ovarian cancer. Its pro-oncogenic role has been observed in human glioblastoma, thyroid carcinoma, breast cancer, and acute myeloid carcinoma. Both roles of DUSP6 have been documented in malignant melanoma depending on the histological subtype of the cancer. Loss-or gain-of-function effects of DUSP6 in these cancers highlights the significance of this phosphatase in carcinogenesis. Development of methods that use the DUSP6 gene as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment or as a prognostic factor for diagnosis and evaluation of cancer treatment outcome has great potential. | 6 | 细菌性角膜溃疡的医院流行病学,诱因和微生物诊断(英文)显示文摘目的:确定细菌性角膜溃疡的发病诱因,临床和微生物特性。方法:本研究涉及300例(300眼)临床上疑似微生物感染的角膜溃疡患者。通过病史回顾和裂隙灯检查获得病例资料。采用标准技术完成角膜刮片检查。取部分刮片样本加入100g/L的氢氧化钾液后,以及采用革兰氏和吉姆萨染色,再直接在显微镜下观察是否存在真菌、细菌和棘阿米巴。另一部分刮片样本直接接种在血琼脂、麦康基琼脂、巧克力琼脂和萨布罗琼脂表面。通过角膜刮片检查,细菌性角膜溃疡被确诊为化脓性角膜溃疡浸润和表层上皮细胞缺失伴细菌感染。对患者应用抗菌治疗。结果:在随访期间,因丢失而被排除的有60个病例。在剩下的240人中,被确诊为细菌性角膜溃疡的156人(65%),大多数为男性(102眼),年龄分布14~74岁。角膜溃疡位于角膜中央的96人(61.5%),位于外周的60人(38.5%)。溃疡深度<1/3角膜厚度的82人(52.6%)。前房炎症为:Tyndall现象和浮游细胞1+~2+64人。角膜涂片中分离出细菌的有125人(80%),其中69%为革兰氏阳性,39%为革兰氏阴性。革兰氏阴性菌感染患者伴有重症前房炎症(P=0.003)并且深度>2/3角膜厚度(P=0.001)。分离得到的最常见致病微生物为金黄色葡萄球菌。治疗后40%的患者视力恢复到入院时的水平甚至更好,其余60%的患者预后差。结论:细菌性角膜溃疡是一种严重的眼部感染性疾病,对眼部存在视力威胁,在治疗上仍具挑战性。快速分离细菌和眼部抗生素的应用是治疗此类疾病的关键。 | Ashok Kumar Narsani Shafi Muhammad Jatoi Mahesh Kumar Lohana Syed Asher Dabir Siddiqa Gul Mahtab Alam Khanzada | 2009 | 国际眼科杂志2009,9,3: | 6 |

| 8 | Unsteady boundary layer flow and heat transfer over an exponentially shrinking sheet with suction in a copper-water nanofluid显示文摘An analysis of unsteady boundary layer flow and heat transfer over an exponentially shrinking porous sheet filled with a copper-water nanofluid is presented.Water is treated as a base fluid.In the investigation,non-uniform mass suction through the porous sheet is considered.Using Keller-box method the transformed equations are solved numerically.The results of skin friction coefficient,the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are presented for different flow parameters.The results showed that the dual non-similar solutions exist only when certain amount of mass suction is applied through the porous sheet for various unsteady parameters and nanoparticle volume fractions.The ranges of suction where dual non-similar solution exists,become larger when values of unsteady parameter as well as nanoparticle volume fraction increase.So,due to unsteadiness of flow dynamics and the presence of nanoparticles in flow field,the requirement of mass suction for existence of solution of boundary layer flow past an exponentially shrinking sheet is less.Furthermore,the velocity boundary layer thickness decreases and thermal boundary layer thickness increases with increasing of nanoparticle volume fraction in both non-similar solutions.Whereas,for stronger mass suction,the velocity boundary layer thickness becomes thinner for the first solution and the effect is opposite in the case of second solution.The temperature inside the boundary layer increases with nanoparticle volume fraction and decreases with mass suction.So,for the unsteadiness and for the presence of nanoparticles,the flow separation is delayed to some extent. | Aurang Zaib Krishnendu Bhattacharyya Sharidan Shafie | 2015 | Journal of Central South University2015,22,12: | 6 |
| 9 | Robust Face Recognition Against Expressions and Partial Occlusions显示文摘Facial features under variant-expressions and partial occlusions could have degrading effect on overall face recognition performance. As a solution, we suggest that the contribution of these features on final classification should be determined. In order to represent facial features contribution according to their variations, we propose a feature selection process that describes facial features as local independent component analysis(ICA) features. These local features are acquired using locally lateral subspace(LLS) strategy.Then, through linear discriminant analysis(LDA) we investigate the intraclass and interclass representation of each local ICA feature and express each feature s contribution via a weighting process. Using these weights, we define the contribution of each feature at local classifier level. In order to recognize faces under single sample constraint, we implement LLS strategy on locally linear embedding(LLE) along with the proposed feature selection. Additionally, we highlight the efficiency of the implementation of LLS strategy. The overall accuracy achieved by our approach on datasets with different facial expressions and partial occlusions such as AR, JAFFE,FERET and CK+ is 90.70%. | 12 | Acute Morphine Administration Reduces Cell-Mediated Immunity and Induces Reactivation of Latent Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 in BALB/c Mice显示文摘Acute morphine administration is known to alter the course of herpes simplex virus infection. In this study, the effect of acute morphine administration on the reactivation of latent herpes was investigated in a mouse model. Because of the important role of cytolytic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity in the inhibition of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) reactivation, the effect of acute morphine administration on CTL responses was also evaluated. Furthermore, lymphocyte proliferation and IFN-γ production were evaluated for their roles in the induction of the CTL response. The findings showed that acute morphine administration significantly reduced CTL responses, lymphocyte proliferation, and IFN-γ production. Furthermore, acute morphine administration has been shown to reactivate latent HSV-1. Previous studies have shown that cellular immune responses have important roles in the inhibition of HSV reactivation. Its design complies with a 3D Au∕Al2O3 multilayer composite hyperbolic metamaterial(HMM), a graphene film, and a D-shaped plastic optical fiber.According to the numerical simulation and the experimental demonstration, the SPR peak of the designed biosensor can be effectively altered in the range of visible to near-infrared by varying the HMM structure. The sensitivity of the appliance was shown to achieve a value of up to 4461 nm/RIU, allowing its applicability for bulk refractive index sensing. | 16 | Multi-temporal forest cover dynamics in Kashmir Himalayan region for assessing deforestation and forest degradation in the context of REDD+ policy显示文摘The role of forests is being actively considered under the agenda of REDD+(Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation plus) aimed at reducing emissions related to changes in forest cover and forest quality. Forests in general have undergone negative changes in the past in the form of deforestation and degradation, while in some countries positive changes are reported in the form of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock. The present study in the Kashmir Himalayan forests is an effort to assess historical forest cover changes that took place from 1980 to 2009 and to predict the same for 2030 on the basis of past trend using geospatial modeling approach. Landsat data(Multispectral Scanner(MSS),Thematic Mapper(TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper(ETM+)) was used for the years 1980, 1990 and(2001, 2009) respectively and change detection analysis between the dates was performed. The maps generated were validated through ground truthing. The study area(3375.62 km^2) from 1980-2009 has uffered deforestation and forest degradation of about 126 km^2 and 139.02 km^2 respectively which can be claimed under negative options of REDD+, while as the area that experienced no change(1514 km^2) can be claimed under conservation. A small area(23.31 km^2) observed as positive change can be claimed under positive options. The projected estimates of forest cover for 2030 showed increased deforestation and forest degradation on the basis of trend analysis using Cellular Automata(CA) Markov modeling. | 19 | Geoaccumulation and distribution of heavy metals in the urban river sediment显示文摘Current study presents the application of chemometric techniques to comprehend the interrelations among sediment variables whilst identifying the possible pollution source at Langat River,Malaysia.Surface sediment samples(0-10 cm)were collected at 22 sampling stations and analyzed for total metals(^(48)Cd,^(29)Cu,^(30)Zn,^(82)Pb),pH,redox potential(Eh),salinity,electrical conductivity(EC),loss on ignition(LOI)and cation exchange capacity(CEC).The principal component analysis(PCA)scrutinized the origin of environmental pollution by various anthropogenic and natural activities:four principal components were obtained with 86.34%(5 cm)and88.34%(10 cm).Standard,forward and backward stepwise discriminant analysis effectively discriminate 2variables(84.06%)indicating high variation of heavy metals accumulation at both depth.The cluster analysis accounted for high input of Zn and Pb at LA8,LA 10,LA 11 and LA 12 that mergers three(5 cm)and four(10cm)into clusters.This is consistent with the contamination factor(C_1)that shows high Cd(LA 1)and Pb(LA 7,LA 8,LA 10,LA 11 and LA 12)contaminations at 5cm.These indicate that Pb and Zn are the most bioavailable metals in the sediment with significant positive linear relationship at both sediment depths.Therefore,this approach is a good indication of environmental pollution status that transfers new findings on the assessment of heavy metals by interpreting large complex datasets and predicting the fate of heavy metals in the sediment. | Nur Aliaa SHAFIE Ahmad Zaharin ARIS Hazzeman HARIS | 2014 | International Journal of Sediment Research2014,29,3: | 2 |
