1Tagetes erecta Linn.and its mosquitocidal potency against Culex quinquefasciatus显示文摘Objective:To investigate mosquitocidal effects of ethanolic extract of(lowers of Tagetes erecta(T.erecta) and its chloroform and petroleum ether soluble fractions against the larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx.quinquefasciatus).Methods:The fresh flowers of T.erecta were extracted in cold with ethanol(5.0 L) and after concentration,the ethanol extract was fractionated with chloroform and petroleum ether to afford a brownish syrupy suspension of ethanol extract(50.0 g),petroleum ether soluble fraction(18.6 g) and chloroform soluble fraction(23.8 g).The larvicidal effect of ethanol extract and their solvent fractions were determined by the standard procedure of WHO against different instars of Cx.quinquefasciatus.Results:Among the tested samples the chloroform soluble fractions showed the highest toxicity and consequently,the lowest LC_(50) values(14.14 μ g/mL,17.06 μ g/mL.36.88 μ g/mL and 75.48 μ g/mL) for all the instars larvae of Cx.quinquefasciatus.The larvae showed comparative tolerance in the course of increasing age and time.Conclusions:It can be concluded that the flowers of T.erecta are very effective natural larvicide and could be useful against Cx.quinquefasciatus.Farjana Nikkon M Rowshanul Habib Zahangir Alam Saud M Rezaul Karim 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,3:10
2Computational fluid dynamics modeling of abutment scour under steady current using the level set method显示文摘The scour and deposition pattern around an abutment under constant discharge condition is calculated using a three dimensional(3D) Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) model.The Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes(RANS) equations are solved in three dimensions using a CFD model.The Level Set Method(LSM) is used for calculation of both free surface and bed topography.The two-equation turbulence model(k-ε and k-ω) is used to calculate the eddy viscosity in the RANS equations.The pressure term in the RANS equations on a staggered grid is modeled using the Chorin’s projection method.The 5th order Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory(WENO) scheme discretizes the convective term of the RANS equations.The Kovacs and Parker and Dey formulations are used for the reduction in bed shear stress on the sloping bed.The model also used the sandslide algorithm which limits bed shear stress reduction during the erosion process.The numerical model solution is validated against experimental results collected at the Politecnico di Milano,Milan,Italy.Furthe r,the numerical model is tested for perfo rmance by varying the grid sizes and key parameters like the space and time discretization schemes.The effect of varying bed porosity has been evaluated.Overall,the free surface is well represented in a realistic manner and bed topography is well predicted using the Level Set Method(LSM).Mohammad Saud Afzal Hans Bihs Lalit Kumar 2020International Journal of Sediment Research2020,35,4:4
3Reconsideration of the phylogenetic positions of three stichotrichous genera Holosticha,Anteholosticha and Pseudokeronopsis (Spirotrichea:Ciliophora) inferred from complete SSU rRNA gene sequences显示文摘The small subunit rRNA (SSU rRNA) gene for six marine stichotrichs, Pseudokeronopsis carnea, P. flava, Holosticha heterofoissneri, H. diademata, H. bradburyae and Anteholosticha manca, was sequenced and characterized. Using this molecular information, the phylogenetic positions of three related genera, Pseudokeronopsis, Holosticha and Anteholosticha were determined. The results indicate that the family Urostylidae is clearly separated from the family Pseudokeronopsidae. The present phylogenetic analyses unambiguously placed Pseudokeronopsis close to Holosticha, and support the conclusion that these genera should be regarded as the members of the order Urostylidae within the stichotrich clade. Furthermore, the results of this study also support the monophyly of the genus Pseud-okeronopsis, the redefinition of Holosticha s. str. and the placement of Anteholosticha in a clade separate from Holosticha.Lifang Li Weibo Song Mann Kyoon Shin Alan Warren Khaled A.S. 4High surface area and mesoporous activated carbon from KOH-activated dragon fruit peels for methylene blue dye adsorption:Optimization and mechanism study显示文摘In this study,an alternative precursor for production of activated carbon was introduced using dragon fruit(Hylocereus costaricensis)peel(DFP).Moreover,KOH was used as a chemical activator in the thermal carbonization process to convert DFP into activated carbon(DFPAC).In order to accomplish this research,several approaches were employed to examine the elemental composition,surface properties,amorphous and crystalline nature,essential active group,and surface morphology of the DFPAC.The BrunauerEmmettTeller test demonstrated a mesoporous structure of the DFPAC has a high surface area of 756.3 m2g 1.The cationic dye Methylene Blue(MB)was used as a probe to assess the efficiency of DFPAC towards the removal of MB dye from aqueous solution.The effects of adsorption input factors(e.g.DFPAC dose(A:0.040.12 g L 1),pH(B:310),and temperature(C:3050℃))were investigated and optimized using statistical analysis(i.e.BoxBehnken design(BBD)).The adsorption kinetic model can be best categorized as the pseudofirst order(PFO).Whereas,the adsorption isotherm model can be best described by Langmuir model,with maximum adsorption capacity of DFPAC for MB dye was 195.2 mg g 1 at 50℃.The adsorption mechanism of MB by DFPAC surface was attributed to the electrostatic interaction,pp interaction,and Hbonding.Finally,the results support the ability of DFP to be a promising precursor for production of highly porous activated carbon suitable for removal of cationic dyes(e.g.MB).Ali H.Jawad Ahmed Saud Abdulhameed Lee D.Wilson Syed Shatir A.Syed-Hassan Zeid A.ALOthman Mohammad Rizwan Khan 2021Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2021,34,4:3
5Total knee arthroplasty:Effect of obesity and other patients' characteristics on operative duration and outcome显示文摘AIM: To examine the effects of patients' characteristics mainly obesity on operative duration and other outcomemeasures of knee arthroplasty. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of 204 patients who had knee arthroplasty within the past five years(2007-2011) at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The data collection form was developed utilizing the literature review to gather all the needed variables. Data were gathered from admission notes, nursing notes, operative reports and discharge summaries.RESULTS: A feasible sample of 204 patients were included in the study. Of those patients, 155(76%) were females. The mean age was 70.1 years for males(SD ± 9.4) and 62.7 years(SD ± 8) for females. Regarding the type of total knee replacement(TKR), 163(79.9%) patients had unilateral TKR and 41(20.1%) had bilateral TKR. Nine patients(4.4%) had a normal body mass index(BMI)(18.5 to < 25). Overweight patients(BMI 25 to < 30) represented 18.1%. Obesity class Ⅰ(BMI 30 to < 35) and obesity class Ⅱ(BMI from 35 to < 40) were present in 23% and 29.9% of the patients, respectively. Morbid obesity(BMI greater than 40) was present in 24.5%. The mean duration of surgery was 126.3 min(SD ± 30.8) for unilateral TKR and 216.6 min(SD ± 55.4) for bilateral TKR.The mean length of stay in the hospital was 12 d(SD ± 4.9). The complications that patients had after the operation included 2 patients(1%) who developed deep venous thrombosis, 2 patients(1%) developed surgical wound infections and none had pulmonary embolism. Patients' characteristics(including age, gender, BMI and co-morbidities) did not have an effect on the operative duration of knee replacement nor the length of hospital stay. 7Eye rubbing-induced changes in intraocular pressure and corneal thickness measured at five locations, in subjects with ocular allergy显示文摘AIM: To assess the effects of eye rubbing on corneal thickness(CT) and intraocular pressure(IOP)measurements obtained 0-30 min after habitual eye rubbing in symptomatic patients.METHODS: Measurements of IOP and CT were obtained at five locations(central, temporal, superior,nasal and inferior) before, and every 5min for 30 min interval after 30 s of eye rubbing, for 25 randomly selected eyes of 14 subjects with ocular allergy and 11age-matched normals. Differences in measurements were calculated in each group [Baseline measurements minus measurements recorded at each time interval after eye rubbing(for IOP), and for each corneal location(for CT)]and comparison were then made between groups(allergic versus control) for differences in any observed effects.RESULTS: Within groups, baseline mean IOPs in the allergic patient-group(14.2 ±3.0 mm Hg) and in the control group(13.1±1.9 mm Hg) were similar at all times,after eye rubbing(P >0.05, for all). The maximum reduction in IOP was 0.8 mm Hg in the control subjects and the maximum increase was also 0.8 mm Hg in the allergic subjects. Between groups(allergic versus control), the changes in IOP remained under 1 mm Hg at all times(P =0.2) after 30 min of eye rubbing. Between 0and 30 min of CT measurements after eye rubbing, the mean central CT(CCT), inferior CT(ICT), superior CT(SCT), temporal CT(TCT) and nasal CT(NCT) did not vary significantly from baseline values in the control and allergic-subject groups(P >0.05, for both). Between both groups, changes in CT were similar at all locations(P >0.05)except for the TC which was minimally thinner by about4.4 μm(P =0.001) in the allergic subjects than in the control subjects, 30 min following 30 s of eye rubbing.CONCLUSION: IOP measured in allergic subjects after30 s of habitual eye rubbing was comparable with that obtained in normal subjects at all times between 0 and30 min. Although, CT in the allergic subjects were similar to those of the control subjects at all times, it varied between +10 and-7.5 μm following eye rubbing, with the temporal cornea showing consistent reductions in thickness in the subjects with allergy.
