1Production of pig iron from red mud waste fines using thermal plasma technology显示文摘Red mud, an insoluble residue produced during alkali leaching of bauxite, is considered as a low-grade iron ore containing 30% to 50% iron. The present paper deals with the use of thermal plasma technology for producing pig iron from red mud waste fines. The smelting reduction of red mud was carried out in a 35 kW DC extended arc thermal plasma reactor. Red mud was properly mixed with fluxes and graphite (fixed carbon, 99%) as a reductant as per stoichiometric requirement. The effect of various process parameters like a reductant, fluxes and smelting time on iron recovery was studied and optimized. An optimum condition for the maximum recovery of iron was obtained. A new thermal plasma process applicable to direct iron making from red mud waste fines that would achieve significant utilization of red mud was proposed.K. Jayasankar P.K. Ray A.K. Chaubey A. 2Hepatocellular carcinoma in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis:Current knowledge and implications for management显示文摘With the prevalence of hepatitis C virus expected to decline, the proportion of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) related to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) is anticipated to increase exponentially due to the growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes. The annual incidence rate of developing HCC in patients with NASH-related cirrhosis is not clearly understood with rates ranging from 2.6%-12.8%. While multiple new mechanisms have been implicated in the development of HCC in NASH; further prospective long-term studies are needed to validate these findings. Recent evidence has shown a significant proportion of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and NASH progress to HCC in the absence of cirrhosis. Liver resection and transplantation represent curative therapeutic options in select NASHrelated HCC patients but have placed a significant burden to our healthcare resources and utilization. Currently NASH-related HCC is the fastest growing indication for liver transplant in HCC candidates. Increased efforts to implement effective screening and preventative strategies, particularly in non-cirrhotic NASH patients, are needed to reduce the future impact imposed by NASH-related HCC.George Cholankeril Ronak Patel Sandeep Khurana Sanjaya K Satapathy 2017World Journal of Hepatology2017,9,11:12
3Reactivation of hepatitis B after liver transplantation: Current knowledge, molecular mechanisms and implications in management显示文摘Chronic hepatitis B(CHB) is a major global health problem affecting an estimated 350 million people with more than 786000 individuals dying annually due to complications, such as cirrhosis, liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Liver transplantation(LT) is considered gold standard for treatment of hepatitis B virus(HBV)-related liver failure and HCC. However, post-transplant viral reactivation can be detrimental to allograft function, leading to poor survival. Prophylaxis with high-dose hepatitis B immunoglobulin(HBIG) and anti-viral drugs have achieved remarkable progress in LT by suppressingviral replication and improving long-term survival. The combination of lamivudine(LAM) plus HBIG has been for many years the most widely used. However, life-long HBIG use is both cumbersome and costly, whereas long-term use of LAM results in resistant virus. Recently, in an effort to develop HBIG-free protocols, high potency nucleos(t)ide analogues, such as Entecavir or Tenofovir, have been tried either as monotherapy or in combination with low-dose HBIG with excellent results. Current focus is on novel antiviral targets, especially for covalently closed circular DNA(ccc DNA), in an effort to eradicate HBV infection instead of viral suppression. However, there are several other molecular mechanisms through which HBV may reactivate and need equal attention. The purpose of this review is to address post-LT HBV reactivation, its risk factors, underlying molecular mechanisms, and recent advancements and future of anti-viral therapy.Ranjit Chauhan Shilpa Lingala Chiranjeevi Gadiparthi Nivedita Lahiri Smruti R Mohanty Jian Wu Tomasz I Michalak Sanjaya K Satapathy 2018World Journal of Hepatology2018,10,3:5
41,3-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea enhances the inhibitory effect of Resveratrol on 5-fluorouracil sensitive/resistant colon cancer cells显示文摘AIM:To study the mechanism of 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)resistance in colon cancer cells and to develop strategies for overcoming such resistance by combination treatment.METHODS:We established and characterized a 5-FU resistance(5-FU-R)cell line derived from continuous exposure(25μmol/L)to 5-FU for 20 wk in 5-FU sensitive HCT-116 cells. The proliferation and expression of different representative apoptosis and anti-apoptosis markers in 5-FU sensitive and 5-FU resistance cells were measured by the MTT assay and by Western blotting, respectively, after treatment with Resveratrol(Res)and/or 1,3-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea(BCNU).Apoptosis and cell cycle arrest was measured by 4',6'-diamidino-2-phenylindole hydrochloride staining and fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis, respectively. The extent of DNA damage was measured by the Comet assay. We measured the visible changes in the DNA damage/repair cascade by Western blotting.RESULTS:The widely used chemotherapeutic agents BCNU and Res decreased the growth of 5-FU sensitive HCT-116 cells in a dose dependent manner.Combined application of BCNU and Res caused more apoptosis in5-FU sensitive cells in comparison to individual treatment. In addition, the combined application of BCNU and Res caused a significant decrease of major DNA base excision repair components in 5-FU sensitive cells. We established a 5-FU resistance cell line(5-FU-R)from 5-FU-sensitive HCT-116(mismatch repair deficient)cells that was not resistant to other chemotherapeutic agents(e.g.,BCNU,Res)except 5-FU.The 5-FU resistance of 5-FU-R cells was assessed by exposure to increasing concentrations of 5-FU followed by the MTT assay. There was no significant cell death noted in5-FU-R cells in comparison to 5-FU sensitive cells after5-FU treatment. This resistant cell line overexpressed anti-apoptotic[e.g.,AKT,nuclear factorκB,FLICE-like inhibitory protein),DNA repair(e.g.,DNA polymerase beta(POL-β),DNA polymerase eta(POLH),protein Flap endonuclease 1(FEN1),DNA damage-binding protein 2(DDB2)]and 5-FU-resistance proteins(thymidylate synthase)but under expressed pro-apoptotic proteins(e.g.,DAB2,CK1)in comparison to the parental cells.Increased genotoxicity and apoptosis were observed in resistant cells after combined application of BCNU and Res in comparison to untreated or parental cells.BCNU increased the sensitivity to Res of 5-FU resistant cells compared with parental cells.Fifty percent cell death were noted in parental cells when 18μmol/L of Res was associated with fixed concentration(20μmol/L)of BCNU,but a much lower concentration of Res(8μmol/L)was needed to achieve the same effect in 5-FU resistant cells.Interestingly, increased levels of adenomatous polyposis coli and decreased levels POL-β,POLH,FEN1 and DDB2 were noted after the same combined treatment in resistant cells.CONCLUSION:BCNU combined with Res exerts a synergistic effect that may prove useful for the treatment of colon cancer and to overcome drug resistance.Dipon Das Ranjan Preet Purusottam Mohapatra Shakti Ranjan Satapathy Chanakya Nath Kundu 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,42:4
5Non-alcoholic fatty liver and chronic kidney disease:Retrospect, introspect, and prospect显示文摘With the growing prevalence of obesity and diabetes in the United States and across the world,a rise in the overall incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is expected. The risk factors for NAFLD are also associated with the development of chronic kidney disease(CKD).We review the epidemiology, risk factors, genetics, implications of gut dysbiosis, and specific pathogenic mechanisms linking NAFLD to CKD.Mechanisms such as ectopic lipid accumulation, cellular signaling abnormalities, and the interplay between fructose consumption and uric acid accumulation have led to the emergence of potential therapeutic implications for this patient population.Transplant evaluation in the setting of both NAFLD and CKD is also reviewed.Potential strategies for surveillance and management include the monitoring of comorbidities, the use of non-invasive fibrosis scoring systems, and the measurement of laboratory markers.Lastly,we discuss the management of patients with NAFLD and CKD,from preventative measures to experimental interventions.Rajiv Heda Masahiko Yazawa Michelle Shi Madhu Bhaskaran Fuad Zain Aloor Paul J Thuluvath Sanjaya K Satapathy 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,17:3
6Review of current progress in hole-transporting materials for perovskite solar cells显示文摘Recent advancements in perovskites’ application as a solar energy harvester have been astonishing. The power conversion efficiency(PCE) of perovskite solar cells(PSCs) is currently reaching parity(>25 percent), an accomplishment attained over past decades. PSCs are seen as perovskites sandwiched between an electron transporting material(ETM) and a hole transporting material(HTM). As a primary component of PSCs, HTM has been shown to have a considerable effect on solar energy harvesting, carrier extraction and transport, crystallization of perovskite, stability, and price. In PSCs, it is still necessary to use a HTM.While perovskites are capable of conducting holes, they are present in trace amounts, necessitating the use of an HTM layer for efficient charge extraction. In this review, we provide an understanding of the significant forms of HTM accessible(inorganic, polymeric and small molecule-based HTMs), to motivate further research and development of such materials. The identification of additional criteria suggests a significant challenge to high stability and affordability in PSC.Prerna Mahajan Bhavya Padha Sonali Verma Vinay Gupta Ram Datt Wing Chung Tsoi Soumitra Satapathi Sandeep Arya 2022Journal of Energy Chemistry2022,31,5:3
7Studies on Epoxidised Castor Oil as Co-Plasticizer with Epoxidised Soyabean Oil for PVC Processing显示文摘An acidic cation exchange resin has been used to prepare epoxidised castor oil(ECO)which was used as a co-plasticizer with epoxidised soyabean oil(ESBO)for processing polyvinyl chloride(PVC).The structure of ECO was confirmed and its physico chemical properties were evaluated.PVC/(ESBO&ECO)blends were prepared by melt mixing and compression molded into sheets. The specimens were evaluated for tensile properties, impact strength and hardness. While the tensile strength did not vary much, the elongation reduced with the replacement of ESBO with ECO.Dynamic mechanical studies revealed that the glass transition temperature increased with incorporation of ECO,however, the storage modulus was not altered much.Replacing 20%of ESBO with ECO resulted in blends with desired thermal and mechanical properties without affecting the processability of PVC.Gouni Thirupathiah Sukanya Satapathy Aruna Palanisamy 2019Journal of Renewable Materials2019,7,8:3
8Liver injury in COVID-19:The hepatic aspect of the respiratory syndrome-what we know so far显示文摘The 2019 novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19)pandemic due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has posed a serious threat to global public health.Although primarily, the infection causes lung injury, liver enzyme abnormalities have also been reported to occur during the course of the disease. We conducted an extensive literature review using the PubMed database on articles covering a broad range of issues related to COVID-19 and hepatic injury. The present review summarizes available information on the spectrum of liver involvement, the possible mechanisms and risk factors of liver injury due to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the prognostic significance of the presence of liver injury.Hopefully, this review will enable clinicians, especially the hepatologists,to understand and manage the liver derangements they may encounter in these patients better and provide guidance for further studies on the liver injury of COVID-19.Prajna Anirvan Pankaj Bharali Mrinal Gogoi Paul J Thuluvath Shivaram P Singh Sanjaya K Satapathy 2020World Journal of Hepatology2020,12,12:2
