| 3 | Surrogate-based modeling and dimension reduction techniques for multi-scale mechanics problems显示文摘Successful modeling and/or design of engineering systems often requires one to address the impact of multiple 'design variables' on the prescribed outcome.There are often multiple,competing objectives based on which we assess the outcome of optimization.Since accurate,high fidelity models are typically time consuming and computationally expensive,comprehensive evaluations can be conducted only if an efficient framework is available.Furthermore,informed decisions of the model/hardware's overall performance rely on an adequate understanding of the global,not local,sensitivity of the individual design variables on the objectives.The surrogate-based approach,which involves approximating the objectives as continuous functions of design variables from limited data,offers a rational framework to reduce the number of important input variables,i.e.,the dimension of a design or modeling space.In this paper,we review the fundamental issues that arise in surrogate-based analysis and optimization,highlighting concepts,methods,techniques,as well as modeling implications for mechanics problems.To aid the discussions of the issues involved,we summarize recent efforts in investigating cryogenic cavitating flows,active flow control based on dielectric barrier discharge concepts,and lithium(Li)-ion batteries.It is also stressed that many multi-scale mechanics problems can naturally benefit from the surrogate approach for 'scale bridging.' | Wei Shyy Young-Chang Cho Wenbo Du Amit Gupta Chien-Chou Tseng Ann Marie Sastry | 2011 | Acta Mechanica Sinica2011,27,6: | 4 |
| 4 | Preparation and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite-Coated Selenium Nanoparticles and their Interaction with Osteosarcoma(SaOS-2) Cells显示文摘Nanotechnology has taken a firm step to revolutionize the field of orthopedic implants. Current research on bone implants focuses to develop implants with multifaceted functions viz., osteoinduction, chemoprevention, antimicrobial action etc., especially for cancerous bone resection. The objective of the present study was to synthesize a novel composite for bone implants, possessing the above properties. Selenium was selected owing to its chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic properties. Hydroxyapatite was selected owing to its bioactivity and similarity in composition to bone mineral properties. Selenium nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method and coated with hydroxyapatite.Hydroxyapatite-coated selenium nanoparticle(HASnp) was characterized physico-chemically using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.HASnp was analysed in vitro using SaOS-2 cell line. Enhanced cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity were observed in HASnp-treated cells. | 6 | A numerical modelling approach to assess the behaviour of underground cavern subjected to blast loads显示文摘The paper gives an insight into the behaviour of large underground caverns which are subjected to blast loads. Caverns are generally constructed in hard rock formation which compels us to use blasting methods for the excavation works. Comparative study was done between models with intact rock mass and discontinuities to assess the stability of cavern as a result of blast loads. Numerical modelling was performed with 3 dimensional distinct element code(3 DEC) to analyse the performance of cavern walls in terms of displacement and to compute peak particle velocities(PPV) both around the cavern periphery and at surface of models. Results showed that the velocity wave with higher frequency exhibited large displacements around the periphery of cavern. Computation of PPV showed that model with horizontal joint sets showed lower PPV in comparison to model with intact rock mass. PPV values were also analysed on the surface for model consisting vertical joints spaced at 4 m intervals. Comparative study of PPV on surface vertically above the blast location between models with horizontal joints spaced at 4 m and vertical joints at 4 m intervals were conducted.
