| 1 | Nonsurgical periodontal-therapy improves glycosylated hemoglobin levels in pre-diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis显示文摘AIM To evaluate the effect of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on glycosylated haemoglobin levels in pre-diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis(CHP).METHODS Sixty pre-diabetic patients with CHP were selected and equally allocated to case and control group. All subjects were evaluated at base line for periodontal parameters(plaque index, oral hygiene index, modified gingival index, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level) and systemic parameters [glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c), fasting lipid profile, and fasting blood glucose]. The case group received non-surgical periodontal therapy. Subjects were re-evaluated for periodontal and systemic parameters after three months.RESULTS Both groups were comparable at baseline. Three months after non surgical periodontal therapy(NSPT), there was significant improvement in periodontal parameters in case group. The mean difference in systemic parameters like HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose from baseline to fourth month for case group was 0.22 ± 0.11 and 3.90 ± 8.48 respectively and control group was-0.056 ± 0.10 and-1.66 ± 6.04 respectively, which was significant between case and control group(P < 0.05). In the case group there was a significant decrease in HbA1c from baseline to three months following NSPT(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION This study showed that periodontal inflammation could affect the glycemic control in otherwise systemically healthy individuals. | 2 | Evaluation of free radical scavenging activity of various extracts of leaves from Kedrostis foetidissima(Jacq.)Cogn显示文摘The present study was aimed to investigate the in vitro free radical scavenging activity of various leaf extracts(aqueous,methanol,acetone chloroform and petroleum ether)of Kedrostis foetidissima.In vitro free radical scavenging activities of the extracts were assessed against DPPH and hydroxyl radicals.The metal chelating activity and reducing power ability of the extracts were also determined.The free radical scavenging activity was found to be high in methanolic extract for DPPH and hydroxyl radicals in a concentration dependent manner followed by chloroform,aqueous,acetone and petroleum ether extracts.The metal chelating activity and reducing power ability was also found to be high in methanolic extract.The difference in scavenging potential of the extracts may be due to variation in the percentage of phytoconstituents extracted in various solvents.Thus the result suggests that the methanolic leaf extract of K.foetidissima could serve as a potential source of antioxidants and can be explored as a therapeutic agent in free radical induced diseases.©2015 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved. | Kalaisezhiyen Pavithra Sasikumar Vadivukkarasi | 2015 | Food Science and Human Wellness2015,4,1: | 6 |
| 3 | Antidiabetic effect of Merremia emarginata Burm.F.in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate the antidiabetic property of Merremia emarginata(M.emarginata) Burm.F.plant in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats.Methods:The dose dependent effects of 28 days oral treatment with methanol extract(100,200 and 400 mg/kg) from the plant oi M.emarginata on blood glucose level,body weight,insulin,total hemoglobin,glycosylated haemoglobin(HbA1C),total protein,serum urea,serum creatinine and carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes were evaluated in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats.Histology of pancreas was also studied.Results:A significant decrease in blood glucose,serum urea and serum creatinine and significant increase in body weight,insulin and protein level were observed in diabetic rats treated with M.emarginata.Treatment with M.emarginata resulted in a significant reduction of HbAlC and an increase in total hemoglobin level.The activities of carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes such as hexokinase were significantly increased whereas glucose-6phosphatase,fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase were significantly decreased by the administration of M.emarginata in diabetic rats.Histology of diabetic rats treated with M.emarginata showed the pancreatic β-cells regeneration.Conclusions:These findings suggest that M.emarginata has potent antidiabetic activity in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. | G Rajiv Gandhi P Sasikumar | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,4: | 4 |

| 5 | Rapunzel syndrome:A rare presentation with multiple small intestinal intussusceptions显示文摘Bezoars are usually confined to the stomach which is seen in individuals with psychiatric illness like trichotillomania,trichophagia and gastric dysmotility.Long standing bezoars may extend into the small intestine leading to a condition known as Rapunzel syndrome.Diagnosis can be established by endoscopy,ultrasonography and computed tomography scan.Treatment includes improvement of general condition and removal of bezoar by laparoscopic approach or laparotomy.Psychiatric consultation is necessary to treat and prevent relapse.We report a case of Rapunzel syndrome in a 16-yearold girl with trichotillomania.She presented with history of epigastric mass for three months and recent onset of pain abdomen,vomiting and early satiety.Skiagram of abdomen was showing distended stomach and endoscopy revealed trichobezoar.At laparotomy,stomach was distended with trichobezoar and there were multiple small intestinal intussusceptions.Gastrotomy and manual reduction of intussusceptions with the removal of trichobezoar with its tail was done.Patient recovered completely after the procedure. | Bidarahalli Krishna Prasanna Kuppusamy Sasikumar Uppinakudru Gurunandan Gubbi Shamanna Sreenath Vikram Kate | 2013 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2013,5,10: | 2 |
