1Effects of bee propolis supplementation on glycemic control, lipid profile and insulin resistance indices in patients with type 2 diabetes: a randomized, double-blind clinical trial显示文摘BACKGROUND:Propolis,a natural resinous substance made by bees from material extracted from plants,flowers and bee's wax,has shown great therapeutic effects and been widely used in food and drug industries.Recently,some researchers have studied the effect of this substance in the treatment of diabetes.OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this trial was to determine the effect of bee propolis on glycemic control,serum lipid profile and insulin resistance indices in patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D).DESIGN,SETTING,PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS:This randomized clinical trial involved 66 patients with T2 D,which were randomly divided into two groups of intervention(IG) and placebo(PG).IG received 300 mg three times a day for a total of 900 mg/d of propolis pills,while PG received similar pills,lacking propolis,on the same schedule for 12 weeks.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Fasting blood glucose(FBG),hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c),total cholesterol(TC),low-density lipoprotein(LDL),high-density lipoprotein(HDL),triglyceride(TG),serum insulin and insulin resistance indices were the main outcome measures.RESULTS:The mean change in FBG between the IG((17.76 ± 27.72) mg/dL decrease) and the PG((6.48 ± 42.77) mg/dL increase) was significantly different(P= 0.01).Change in mean HbA1 c had a similar pattern to FBG.The mean change in TC between the IG((5.16 ± 43.80) mg/dL increase) and the PG((28.9 ± 27.4) mg/dL increase) was also significantly different(P= 0.01),showing the protective role of propolis against the increase in TC.The change in mean LDL was similar to mean TC.There was no significant difference in other lipids or insulin resistance indices between the two groups.CONCLUSION:Based on this study,the daily intake of 900 mg of bee propolis supplement for 12 weeks results in improvement of glycemic and some serum lipid levels in patients with T2 D.TRIAL REGISTRATION:This study is registered on the website of Iranian Ministry of Health(www.irct.ir)with proprietary code of IRCT2014080218659N1.Nazli Samadi Hassan Mozaffari-Khosravi Masoud Rahmanian Mohsen Askarishahi 2017Journal of Integrative Medicine2017,15,2:6

3Diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii infection in pregnant women using automated chemiluminescence and quantitative real time PCR显示文摘Objective: To identify serodiagnosis and quantification of Toxoplasma gondii(T. gondii) infection among pregnant women in Salmas, northwest of Iran. Methods: In this crosssectional study, 276 blood samples were collected from pregnant women referred to the health care centers in Salmas city. The demographic variables were also recorded. Titers of antiToxoplasma IgM and IgG antibodies(Ab) were determined using the chemiluminescence immunoassay. Quantitative real-time PCR targeting the T. gondii repeated element gene was also performed on the blood sample. Results: Out of all, 19.92%(55/276) and 2.17%(6/276) patients were seropositive for anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM Ab, respectively. Moreover, the presence of T. gondii DNA was observed in 12.31%(34/276) blood samples. A significant relationship was observed between the IgG Ab seropositivity and contact with the cat as a risk factor(P=0.022). Conclusions: The seroprevalence rate of T. gondii infection in pregnant women is relatively low. Consequently, the seronegative pregnant women are at risk, and a considerable rate of positive blood samples for the presence of parasite's DNA should not be ignored. Besides, quantitative real-time PCR could be considered as an accurate method for diagnosis of acute toxoplasmosis especially when the precise results are of the most importance in pregnancy. 4Evaluation of preventable trauma death in emergency department of Imam Reza hospital显示文摘BACKGROUND: Trauma is considered as a worldwide problem despite socio-economic development. Motor vehicle accidents(MVAs) are the most important cause of trauma. Trauma related deaths are mostly preventable. This study aimed to investigate the causes and prevention of death in trauma patients.METHODS: This retrospective, descriptive-analytic study assessed 100 trauma patients referred to our emergency department(ED) from January 2013 to Januanry 2015. The included patients were those with trauma died after arrival at our ED. Age, sex, cause of trauma, clinical causes of death, causes of death def ined by autopsy, way of transfer to the ED, time of ambulance arrival at the scene of trauma, and time elapsed to enter the ED from the scene of trauma were studied.RESULTS: In the 100 patients, 21(21%) patients were female and 79(79%) male. Fortythree patients were older than 60 years. Trauma was largely due to pedestrian accidents in 31% of the patients, and 33% had a hypo-volemic shock. About 80% of deaths were due to intra-cranial hemorrhage(ICH) or intra-ventricular hemorrhage(IVH), and spinal injuries were not preventable. Autopsy revealed that 28% of the patients suffered from internal injuries. Autopsy revealed that 19% of the deaths were not preventable and 81% were considered preventable. In our patients, 76 were transferred to the hospital by emergency medicine services(EMS). Analysis of time for ambulance arrival to the scene and frequency of death revealed that 52.2% of the deaths occurred between 11 and 15 minutes. Analysis of time for admission to the ED from the scene of trauma showed that 74.6% deaths occurred between 6 and 10 minutes.CONCLUSIONS: The rate of hospital preventable deaths is about 80%, a high mortality rate, which denotes a lack of proper diagnosis and treatment. 6Assessing the kinetic model of hydro-distillation and chemical composition ofAquilaria malaccensis leaves essential oil显示文摘This study aimed to model the kinetic of hydro-distillation of Aquilaria malaccensis leaves oil in order to understand and optimize the extraction process. In addition, this study, for the first time, aimed to identify the chemical compositions of the A. malaccensis leave-oil. By assessing both first-order kinetic model and the model of simultaneous washing and diffusion, the result indicated that the model of simultaneous washing and diffusion better describes the hydro-distillation mechanism of the essential oil from A. malaccensis leaves.The optimum time, solid to liquid ratio, and the heating power for extracting the highest amount of essential oil were found to be around 3 h, 1:10(g·ml-1), and 300 W respectively. Yellow essential oil with a strong smell and a yield of 0.05 v/w was extracted by hydro-distillation Clevenger apparatus. Chemical compounds of the essential oil were analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy(GC/MS), which resulted in identification of 42 compounds that constitute 93% of essential oil.
