| 1 | Helicobacter pylori in human health and disease:Mechanisms for local gastric and systemic effects显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is present in roughly 50% of the human population worldwide and infection levels reach over 70% in developing countries. The infection has classically been associated with different gastro-intestinal diseases, but also with extra gastric diseases. Despite such associations, the bacterium frequently persists in the human host without inducing disease, and it has been suggested that H. pylori may also play a beneficial role in health. To understand how H. pylori can produce such diverse effects in the human host, several studies have focused on understanding the local and systemic effects triggered by this bacterium. One of the main mechanisms by which H. pylori is thought to damage the host is by inducing local and systemic inflammation. However, more recently, studies are beginning to focus on the effects of H. pylori and its metabolism on the gastric and intestinal microbiome. | 2 | Going beyond 1000000 resolved points in a Brillouin distributed fiber sensor: theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration显示文摘Distributed fiber sensing possesses the unique ability to measure the distributed profile of an environmental quantity along many tens of kilometers with spatial resolutions in the meter or even centimeter scale.This feature enables distributed sensors to provide a large number of resolved points using a single optical fiber.However,in current systems,this number has remained constrained to a few hundreds of thousands due to the finite signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of the measurements,which imposes significant challenges in the development of more performing sensors.Here,we propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultimately optimized distributed fiber sensor capable of resolving 2100000 independent points,which corresponds to a one-orderof-magnitude improvement compared to the state-of-the-art.Using a Brillouin distributed fiber sensor based on phase-modulation correlation-domain analysis combined with temporal gating of the pump and time-domain acquisition,a spatial resolution of 8.3 mm is demonstrated over a distance of 17.5 km.The sensor design addresses the most relevant factors impacting the SNR and the performance of medium-to-long range sensors as well as of sub-meter spatial resolution schemes.This step record in the number of resolved points could be reached due to two theoretical models proposed and experimentally validated in this study:one model describes the spatial resolution of the system and its relation with the sampling interval,and the other describes the amplitude response of the sensor,providing an accurate estimation of the SNR of the measurements. | Andrey Denisov Marcelo A Soto Luc Thévenaz | 2016 | Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1: | 11 |
| 3 | Influence of dissolved organic matter character on mercury incorporation by planktonic organisms: An experimental study using oligotrophic water from Patagonian lakes显示文摘Ligands present in dissolved organic matter(DOM) form complexes with inorganic divalent mercury(Hg2+) afecting its bioavailability in pelagic food webs. This investigation addresses the influence of a natural gradient of DOM present in Patagonian lakes on the bioaccumulation of Hg2+(the prevailing mercury species in the water column of these lakes) by the algae Cryptomonas erosa and the zooplankters Brachionus calyciflorus and Boeckella antiqua. Hg2+accumulation was studied through laboratory experiments using natural water of four oligotrophic Patagonian lakes amended with197Hg2+. The bioavailability of Hg2+was afected by the concentration and character of DOM. The entrance of Hg2+into pelagic food webs occurs mostly through passive and active accumulation. The incorporation of Hg2+by Cryptomonas, up to 27% of the Hg2+amended, was found to be rapid and dominated by passive adsorption,and was greatest when low molecular weight compounds with protein-like or small phenolic signatures prevailed in the DOM.Conversely, high molecular weight compounds with a humic or fulvic signature kept Hg2+in the dissolved phase, resulting in the lowest Hg2+accumulation in this algae. In Brachionus and Boeckella the direct incorporation of Hg from the aqueous phase was up to3% of the Hg2+amended. The dietary incorporation of Hg2+by Boeckella exceeded the direct absorption of this metal in natural water,and was remarkably similar to the Hg2+adsorbed in their prey. | 5 | OPTIMIZATION OF A WAVE CANCELLATION MULTIHULL SHIP USING CFD TOOLS显示文摘A simple CFD tool, coupled to a discrete surface representation and a gradient based optimization procedure, is applied to the design of optimal hull forms and optimal arrangement of hulls for a wave cancellation multihull ship. The CFD tool, which is used to estimate the wave drag, is based on the zeroth order slender ship approximation. The hu ll surface is represented by a triangulation, and almost every grid point on the surface can be used as a design variable. A smooth surface is obtained via a si mplified pseudo shell problem. The optimal design process consists of two steps . The optimal center and outer hull forms are determined independently in the fi rst step, where each hull forms are determined independently in the first step, where each hull keeps the same displacement as the original design while the wav e drag is minimized. The optimal outer hull arrangement is determined in the se cond step for the optimal center and outer hull forms obtained in the first step . | 7 | Liquid-liquid interfacial tension of equilibrated mixtures of ionic liquids and hydrocarbons显示文摘Ionic liquids are possible alternative solvents for the separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons by liquid-liquid extrac- tion. Interfacial tension is an important property to consider in the design of liquid-liquid extraction processes. In this work, the liquid-liquid interfacial tension and the mutual solubility at 25 °C have been measured for a series of biphasic, equilibrated mixtures of an ionic liquid and a hydrocarbon. In particular, the ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluorome- thanesulfonyl)imide (with the alkyl substituent being ethyl, hexyl or decyl), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate have been selected, as well as the hydrocarbons benzene, hexane, ethylben- zene, and octane. The selected sets of ionic liquids and hydrocarbons allow the analysis of the influence of a series of effects on the interfacial tension. For example, the interfacial tension decreases with an increase in the length of the alkyl substituent chain of the cation or with an increase of the degree of charge delocalisation in the anion of the ionic liquid. Also, the interfa- cial tension with the aromatic hydrocarbons is markedly lower than that with the aliphatic hydrocarbons. A smaller effect is caused by variation of the size of the hydrocarbon. | 8 | Morphological Characterization and Hydrodynamic Behavior of Shortfin Mako Shark(Isurus oxyrinchus)Dorsal Fin Denticles显示文摘The shortfin mako shark(Isurus oxyrinchus)is one of the fastest marine fishes,reaching speeds of up to 70 km·h^-1.Their speed is related to the skin surface design composed of dermal denticles.Denticles vary in size and shape according to placement on the body and minimize turbulence around the body.The objective of this study is to analyze the interaction between seawater flow and denticles on the dorsal fin.High-resolution microscopy(scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy)were used to measure defined parts of the dermal denticles.These measurements,along with ratios based on length-to-width define three morphologies(rounded,semi-rounded,long)that were 3D reconstructed.Computational fluid dynamics simulated fluid passage over reconstructed denticles and describe hy-drodynamic efficiency under different conditions.An increase in angle of inclination produced a relevant increase in the drag coefficient,especially for high velocity inlets.The lowest drag coefficient values were found in long and semi-rounded,followed by rounded mor-phologies.The hydrodynamic behavior of shark skin demonstrates a relation to the morphological characteristics of dermal denticles on the dorsal fin.It is concluded that the best hydroefficiency relies on the rounded morphology and may serve to design hydrodynamically efficient surfaces or manmade assemblies. | Fernandez-Waid Patricia Diez Guzman Bidaguren Inigo Izagirre Urtzi Blanco Jesus Maria Soto Manu | 2019 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2019,16,4: | 3 |

| 10 | Comparative study of the efficacy and safety of bromfenac, nepafenac and diclofenac sodium for the prevention of cystoid macular edema after phacoemulsification显示文摘● AIM: To compare the efficacy, tolerability and safety of bromfenac 0.09%, nepafenac 0.1% or diclofenac 0.1% for the prophylaxis of the cystoid macular edema(CME) after phacoemulsification.● METHODS: Group sequential observational comparative study. After phacoemulsification, patients received two months for topical treatment of either diclofenac sodium, bromfenac or nepafenac. All patients received concomitant topical tobramycin 0.3% and topical prednisolone 1%. We measured CME using optical coherence tomography(OCT) central foveal thickness, macular thickness and total macular volume.● RESULTS: We enrolled 243 patients from January to June 2015, and 35% received diclofenac, 32.9% bromfenac and 32.1% nepafenac. When we compared pre-operative to three weeks to two months, bromfenac was more effective in reducing foveal volume(21.3 and 35.4 mm3, respectively), compared with the diclofenac(1.3 and 11.5 mm3, respectively), and the nepafenac group, became more edematous 6.4 and 5.3, respectively. Totally 133 patients completed the post-surgical satisfaction questionnaire. | 11 | Cost-effectiveness of enhanced liver fibrosis test to assess liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C virus and alcoholic liver disease patients显示文摘AIM To assess liver fibrosis(LF) in hepatitis C virus(HCV) and alcoholic liver disease(ALD), estimate health outcomes and costs of new noninvasive testing strategies METHODS A Markov model was developed to simulate LF progression in HCV and ALD for a cohort of 40-yearold men with abnormal levels of transaminases. Three different testing alternatives were studied: a single liver biopsy; annual Enhanced liver fibrosis(ELF?) followed by liver stiffness measurement(LSM) imaging as a confirmation test if the ELF test is positive; and annual ELF test without LSM. The analysis was performed from the perspective of a university hospital in Spain.Clinical data were obtained from published literature. Costs were sourced from administrative databases of the hospital. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed.RESULTS In HCV patients, annual sequential ELF test/LSM and annual ELF test alone prevented respectively 12.9 and 13.3 liver fibrosis-related deaths per 100 persons tested, compared to biopsy. The incremental costeffectiveness ratios(ICERs) were respectively €13400 and €11500 per quality-adjusted life year(QALY). In ALD, fibrosis-related deaths decreased by 11.7 and 22.1 per 100 persons tested respectively with sequential ELF test/LSM and annual ELF test alone.
