1Variability in rainfall threshold for debris flow after the Chi-Chi earthquake in central Taiwan,China显示文摘The purpose of this study is to analyze variability in rainfall threshold for debris flow(critical rainfall for debris flow triggering) after the ML 7.3 Chi-Chi earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999. Two study sites with different geological conditions were surveyed in the earthquake area. Streambed surveys were conducted to continuously monitor debris flows between 1999 and 2006. During the 7-year study period,every debris flow event was identified,and the streambed characterized. Results show that the rainfall threshold for debris flow was remarkably lower just after the Chi-Chi Earthquake,but gradually recovered. To date,this rainfall threshold is still lower than the original level prior to the earthquake. This variability in rainfall threshold is closely related to the amount of sediment material in the initiation area of debris flow,which increased rapidly due to landslides resulting from the earthquake. With the increase in sediment material,the rainfall threshold was lowered severely during the first year following the Chi-Chi earthquake. However,heavy rainfalls mobilized the sediment material,causing debris flows and transporting sediment downstream. With the decrease in sediment material,the rainfall threshold recovered gradually over time. Furthermore,debris flows occurred only in the subbasins that had sufficient sediment material to cause significant movement. 2A blind, randomized comparison of racecadotril and loperamide for stopping acute diarrhea in adults显示文摘AIM: Racecadotril is a specific enkephalinase inhibitor that exhibits intestinal antisecretory activity without affecting intestinal transit. Loperamide is an effective anti-diarrheal agent, but it usually induces constipation. This study is to compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of racecadotril versus Ioperamide in the outpatient treatment of acutediarrhea in adults.METHODS: A two-center, randomized, parallel-group,single-blind study was carried out to compare the efficacy,tolerability, and safety of racecadotril (100 mg thrics daily) and Ioperamide (2.0 mg 2 twics daily) in 62 adult patients suffering from acute diarrhea. The main efficacy criterion used was the duration of diarrhea after beginning the treatment (in hours). Other signs and symptoms werealso evaluated.RESULTS: The clinical success rates for these antidiarrheal treatments were 95.7% and 92.0% for racecadotril and Ioperamide respectively. Patients on racecadotril had a median duration of diarrhea of 19.5 h compared with a median of 13 h for patients on Ioperamide.Rapid improvement in anal burn and nausea was found for each drug. However, more patients on Ioperamide suffered from reactive constipation (29.0% vs 12.9%).Itching, another adverse event was notably higher in the racecadotril group (28.6% vs 0%). With regard to other adverse events, the two medications showed similar occurrence rates and similar concomitant medicationusage rates.CONCLUSION: Racecadotril and Ioperamide are rapid,equally effective treatments for acute diarrhea in adults,but Ioperamide treatment is associated with a higher incidence of treatment-related constipation.Hwang-Huei Wang Ming-Jium Shieh Kuan-Fu Liao 2005World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,10:13
3Effects of lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented mustard on lowering cholesterol显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the ability of lactic acid bacteria(LAB)strains isolated from fermented mustard to lower the cholesterol in vitro.Methods:The ability of 50 LAB strains isolated from fermented mustard on lowering cholesterol in vitro was determined by modified o-phtshalaldehyde method.The LAB isolates were analyzed for their resistance to acid and bile salt.Strains with lowering cholesterol activity,were determined adherence to Caco-2 cells.Results:Strain B0007,B0006 and B0022 assimilated more cholesterol than BCRC10474 and BCRC17010.The isolated strains showed tolerance to pH 3.0 for 3h despite variations in the degree of viability and bile-tolerant strains,with more than 10~s CFU/mL after incubation for 24 h at 1%oxigall in MRS.In addition,strain B0007 and B0022 identified as Lactobacillus plantarum with 16S rDNA sequences were able to adhere to the Caco-2 cell lines.Conclusions:These strains B0007 and B0022 may be potential functional sources for cholesterollowering activities as well as adhering to Caco-2 cell lines.Shu Chen Wang Chen Kai Chang Shu Chang Chan Jiunn Shiuh Shieh Chih Kwang Chiu Pin-Der Duh 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,7:10
4Benign esophageal lesions: Endoscopic and pathologic features显示文摘Benign esophageal lesions have a wide spectrum of clinical and pathologic features. Understanding the endoscopic and pathologic features of esophageal lesions is essential for their detection, differential diagnosis, and management. The purpose of this review is to provide updated features that may help physicians to appropriately manage these esophageal lesions. The endoscopic features of 2997 patients are reviewed. In epithelial lesions, the frequency of occurrence was in the following order: glycogenic acanthosis, heterotopic gastric mucosa, squamous papilloma, hyperplastic polyp, ectopic sebaceous gland and xanthoma. In subepithelial lesions, the order was as follows: hemangioma, leiomyoma, dysphagia aortica and granular cell tumor. Most benign esophageal lesions can be diagnosed according to their endoscopic appearance and findings on routine biopsy, and submucosal lesions, by endoscopic resection. Management is generally based upon the confidence of diagnosis and whether the lesion causes symptoms. We suggest endoscopic resection of all granular cell tumors and squamous papillomas because, while rare, these lesions have malignant potential. 5Consumption of purple sweet potato leaves modulates human immune response: T-lymphocyte functions, lytic activity of natural killer cell and antibody production显示文摘AIM: To study the immunological effects of physiological doses of purple sweet potato leaves(PSPL). METHODS: The randomized crossover study(two periods, each lasting for 2 wk) involved 16 healthy non-smoking adults of normal weight. The 6-wk study consisted of a run-in(wk 1) PSPL diet(daily consumption of 200 g PSPL) or a control diet(low polyphenols, with the amount of carotenoids adjusted to the same level as that of PSPL)(wk 2-3), washout diet(wk 4), and switched diet(wk 5-6). Fasting blood was collected weekly in the morning. T-lymphocyte function was assessed via the proliferation and secretion of immunoreactive cytokines. Salivary IgA secretion and the specific cytotoxic activities of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer(NK) cells were determined. RESULTS: The plasma β-carotene level increased with time in both groups, while the plasma polyphenol level decreased in the control group, and no significant difference was detected between the two groups. Although plasma polyphenol levels did not significantly increase in the PSPL group at the end of the study, they were significantly elevated in urine. PSPL consumption produced a significant increase in proliferation responsiveness of peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) and their secretion of immunoreactive IL-2 and IL-4. As well, lytic activity in NK cells was elevated in a time-dependent fashion. Salivary IgA secretion significantly decreased in control group after 2 wk, and returned to baseline following dietary switch to PSPL. CONCLUSION: Consumption of PSPL modulates various immune functions including increased proliferation responsiveness of PBMC, secretion of cytokines IL-2 and IL-4, and the lytic activity of NK cells. As polyethylene production improved, modes of failure from polyethylene wear and subsequent osteolysis became less prevalent. Newer longitudinal studies report that infection has become the primary acute cause of failure with loosening and instability remaining as the overall greatest reasons for revision. Clinical database and worldwide national registries confirm these reports. 7Impulsive force of debris flow on a curved dam显示文摘Although Sabo dams are an efficient method for river and basin management,traditional Sabo dams have a great impact on ecology and landscape.Moreover,such dams are hit and often damaged by great impulsive force when they block the debris flow.Therefore,alternative shapes for Sabo dam deserve thorough investigation.In this investigation,a curved dam was designed by changing the upstream-dam-surface geometric shape to reduce the impulsive force of the debris flow,with enhanced stability and reduced concrete mass being the anticipated outcomes.In this study,the flume and laboratory facilities simulated the impulsive force of the debris flow to the Sabo dams.Three geometric forms,including vertical,slanted and curved Sabo dams,were used to determine the impulsive force.Impulsive force theories of the debris flow were derived from the momentum equation and the Bernoulli equation.In these,the impulsive force was balanced by the friction force of the Sabo dam and the opposite force of the load cell behind the dam as it was hit by the debris flow.Positive correlations were found when comparing the experimental data with the theoretical results.These findings suggest that our impulsive force theory has predictive validity with regard to the experimental data.The results from both theory and experimental data clearly show that curved dams were sustained less force than the other dams under the same debris flow.This comparison demonstrates the importance of curved geometry for a well-designed Sabo dam.Chjeng-Lun SHIEH Chia-Hsien TING Hung-Wen PAN 2008International Journal of Sediment Research2008,23,2:9
8Highly sensitive detection of melamine based on reversed phase liquid chromatography mass spectrometry显示文摘In this work, we developed a highly sensitive method to detect melamine based on reversed phase liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. A mass spectrometry compatible ion pair, heptafluorobu-tyric acid(HFBA), was used to separate melamine by reversed phase liquid chromatography prior to electrospray mass spectrometry. The incorporation of isotope internal standard and multiple reaction monitoring improved the accuracy and linearity of quantification. Based on this strategy, the method limit of quantification was 0.1 ng/g. The limits of quantification were 8 ng/g for liquid milk and 15 ng/g for dry milk powder. 9Fecal calprotectin correlated with endoscopic remission for Asian inflammatory bowel disease patients显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the correlation between fecal calprotectin(f C), C-reactive protein(CRP), and endoscopic disease score in Asian inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) patients.METHODS: Stool samples were collected and assessed for calprotectin levels by Quantum Blue Calprotectin High Range Rapid test. Crohn's disease endoscopic index of severity(CDEIS) and ulcerative colitis endoscopic index of severity(UCEIS) were used for endoscopic lesion scoring. RESULTS: A total of 88 IBD patients [36 patients with Crohn's disease(CD) and 52 with ulcerative colitis(UC)] were enrolled. For CD patients, f C correlated with CDEIS(r = 0.465, P = 0.005) and CRP(r = 0.528, P = 0.001). f C levels in UC patients correlated with UCEIS(r = 0.696, P < 0.0001) and CRP(r = 0.529, P = 0.0005). Calprotectin could predict endoscopic remission(CDEIS < 6) with 50% sensitivity and 100% specificity(AUC: 0.74) in CD patients when using 918 μg/g as the cutoff. When using 191 μg/g as the cut-off in UC patients, calprotectin could be used for predicting endoscopic remission(UCEIS < 3) with 88% sensitivity and 75% specificity(AUC: 0.87). 10Compressibility of a natural kyanite to 17.5 GPa显示文摘The compressional behaviour of a natural kyanite,(Al1.99Fe0.01)SiO5,has been investigated to about 17.5 GPa at 300 K using a diamond-anvil cell and synchrotron X-ray diffraction.The pressure-volume data fitted to the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state(EoS) yield an isothermal bulk modulus(K0T) of 192 ± 6 GPa and pressure derivative(K00T) of 6 ± 1.When K00T is fixed as 4,the derived K0T is 201 ± 2 GPa.These values are in excellent agreement with most experimental determinations in the literature.Consequently,it can be concluded that the compressibility of kyanite under high pressures has been accurately constrained.Xi Liu Sean R. 11Improvedendoscopicretrogradecholangiopancreatographybrushincreases diagnosticyieldofmalignantbiliarystrictures显示文摘AIM: To determine if a new brush design could im-prove the diagnostic yield of biliary stricture brushings. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed of all endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures with malignant biliary stricture brushing between January 2008 and October 2012. A standard wire-guided cytology brush was used prior to proto-col implementation in July 2011, after which, a new 9 French wire-guided cytology brush(Infinity sampling device, US Endoscopy, Mentor, OH) was used for all cases. All specimens were reviewed by blinded pa-thologists who determined whether the sample waspositive or negative for malignancy. Cellular yield was quantified by describing the number of cell clusters seen. RESULTS: Thirty-two new brush cases were compared to 46 historical controls. Twenty-five of 32 (78%) cases in the new brush group showed abnormal cellular find-ings consistent with malignancy as compared to 17 of 46(37%) in the historical control group(P = 0.0003). There was also a significant increase in the average number of cell clusters of all sizes(21.1 vs 9.9 clusters, P = 0.0007) in the new brush group compared to his-torical controls. 13Counting CD4^(+) and CD8^(+) T cells in the spleen: a novel in vivo method for assessing biomaterial immunotoxicity显示文摘As immunotoxicity assessments of newly developed biomaterials are often restricted to use in assessment of local tissue response at the implantation site,they do not always show an immune response acceptable to qualify them for clinical use.We tested a new method to assess systemic toxicity:counting the CD4^(+) and CD8^(+) cells in the spleen.Three different biomaterials were subcutaneously implanted in three groups of rats for the same time period.After 31 days,their spleens were harvested,and CD4^(+) and CD8^(+) cells were counted.The mean CD4^(+)/CD8^(+) cell counts were 24.563.6/19.864.0(porous collagen matrix group),25.567.1/21.663.8[synthetic collagen matrix(DuragenVR)group]and 28.164.1/19.663.7(porcine dermis group).Differences in cell counts were not significant.The immunotoxic response generated against porous collagen matrix was comparable to that produced by a similar biomaterial already used clinically.This is,to the best of our knowledge,the first study on cytotoxic lymphocytes in the spleen to quantify systemic immune response to a biomaterial;however,such studies have been conducted with bacterial and viral antigens,and with vaccines.We believe that the present study provides a viable method for larger studies to confirm our current findings.Shyh-Jou Shieh Prashanth Varkey Po-Yang Chen Su-Ya Chang Lynn L.H.Huang 2014Regenerative Biomaterials2014,1,1:3

16Carrier-assisted differential detection显示文摘To overcome power fading induced by chromatic dispersion in optical fiber communications,optical field recovery is a promising solution for direct detection short-reach applications,such as fast-evolving data center interconnects(DCIs).To date,various direct detection schemes capable of optical field recovery have been proposed,including Kramers−Kronig(KK)and signal−signal beat interference(SSBI)iterative cancellation(IC)receivers.However,they are all restricted to the single sideband(SSB)modulation format,thus conspicuously losing half of the electrical spectral efficiency(SE)compared with double sideband(DSB)modulation.Additionally,SSB suffers from the noise folding issue,requiring a precise optical filter that complicates the receiver design.As such,it is highly desirable to investigate the field recovery of DSB signals via direct detection.In this paper,for the first time,we propose a novel receiver scheme called carrier-assisted differential detection(CADD)to realize optical field recovery of complex-valued DSB signals via direct detection.First,CADD doubles the electrical SE compared with the KK and SSBI IC receivers by adopting DSB modulation without sacrificing receiver sensitivities.Furthermore,by using direct detection without needing a precise receiver optical filter,CADD can employ cost-effective uncooled lasers as opposed to expensive temperature-controlled lasers in coherent systems.Our proposed receiver architecture opens a new class of direct detection schemes that are suitable for photonic integration analogous to homodyne receivers in coherent detection.William Shieh Chuanbowen Sun Honglin Ji 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:2
