1Tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the role of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) in cirrhotic patients who have hepatic and renal impairment with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP).METHODS:We prospectively studied 120 cirrhotic patients with SBP and 80 cirrhotic patients with sterile ascitic fluid.They included 144 males and 56 females with ages ranging between 34 and 62 years.The diagnosis of cirrhosis was established by clinical and laboratory criteria that did not require histological confirmation.The severity of underlying liver disease was evaluated using Pugh's modification of Child's criteria(Child-Pugh scores).Ascitic fluid was sent to the laboratory for cell count,culture,sensitivity testing,and measurement of chemical elements(i.e.,albumin,glucose).Specimens were inoculated into aerobic and anaerobic blood culture bottles.Serum and ascitic fluid were also collected in sterile tubes at study entry(before the initiation of antibiotic treatment) and 48 h later.Assays for TNF-α and IL-6 in the serum and ascitic fluid were performed with an immunoenzymometric assay using manufacture's instructions.RESULTS:Cytokine levels in serum and ascitic fluid were significantly higher in the patients with SBP.(plasma TNF-α:135.35 ng/mL ± 11.21 ng/mL vs 92.86 ng/mL ± 17.56 ng/mL,P < 0.001;plasma IL-6:32.30 pg/mL ± 7.07 pg/mL vs 12.11 pg/mL ± 6.53 pg/mL,P < 0.001;ascitic fluid TNF-α:647.54 ± 107.11 ng/mL vs 238.43 ng/mL ± 65.42 ng/mL,P < 0.001);ascitic fluid IL-6:132.84 ng/mL ± 34.13 vs 40.41 ± 12.85 pg/mL,P < 0.001).About 48(40%) cirrhotic patients with SBP developed renal and hepatic impairment and showed significantly higher plasma and ascitic fluid cytokine levels at diagnosis of infection.[(plasma TNF-α:176.58 ± 17.84 vs 135.35 ± 11.21 ng/mL)(P < 0.001) and(IL-6:57.83 ± 7.85 vs 32.30 ± 7.07 pg/mL)(P < 0.001);ascitic fluid TNF-α:958.39 ± 135.72 vs 647.54 ± 107.11 ng/mL,(P < 0.001),ascitic fluid IL-6:654.74 ± 97.43 vs 132.84 ± 34.13 pg/mL,(P < 0.001)].Twenty nine patients(60.4%) with SBP and renal impairment died whereas,only four patients(5.55%) with SBP but without renal impairment died from gastrointestinal hemorrhage(P < 0.0005).CONCLUSION:It appears that TNF-α production may enhance liver cell injury and lead to renal impairment.This correlated well with the poor prognosis and significantly increased mortality associated with SBP in cirrhotic patients.Muhammed AM Suliman Fawzy MH Khalil Salam SA Alkindi Anil V Pathare Ali AA Almadhani Neveen AAI Soliman 2012World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology2012,3,5:39
2Global burden, distribution, and interventions for infectious diseases of poverty显示文摘Infectious diseases of poverty(IDoP)disproportionately affect the poorest population in the world and contribute to a cycle of poverty as a result of decreased productivity ensuing from long-term illness,disability,and social stigma.In 2010,the global deaths from HIV/AIDS have increased to 1.5 million and malaria mortality rose to 1.17 million.Mortality from neglected tropical diseases rose to 152,000,while tuberculosis killed 1.2 million people that same year.Substantial regional variations exist in the distribution of these diseases as they are primarily concentrated in rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa,Asia,and Latin America,with geographic overlap and high levels of co-infection.Evidence-based interventions exist to prevent and control these diseases,however,the coverage still remains low with an emerging challenge of antimicrobial resistance.Therefore,community-based delivery platforms are increasingly being advocated to ensure sustainability and combat co-infections.Because of the high morbidity and mortality burden of these diseases,especially in resource-poor settings,it is imperative to conduct a systematic review to identify strategies to prevent and control these diseases.Therefore,we attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of one of these strategies,that is community-based delivery for the prevention and treatment of IDoP.In this paper,we describe the burden,epidemiology,and potential interventions for IDoP.In subsequent papers of this series,we describe the analytical framework and the methodology used to guide the systematic reviews,and report the findings and interpretations of our analyses of the impact of community-based strategies on individual IDoPs.Zulfiqar A Bhutta Johannes Sommerfeld Zohra S Lassi Rehana A Salam Jai K Das 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:21
3Watering techniques and zero-valent iron biochar pH effects on As and Cd concentrations in rice rhizosphere soils,tissues and yield显示文摘Zero-valent iron amended biochar(ZVIB)has been proposed as a promising material in immobilizing heavy metals in paddy fields.In this study,the impacts of p H of ZVIB(p H 6.3 and p H 9.7)and watering management techniques(watering amount in the order of CON(control,5/72)>3/72>1-3/72>3/100>1/72,with 5/72,for example,representing irrigation given to 5 cm above soil surface in 72 hr regular interval)on As and Cd bioavailability for rice and its grain yield(Yield BR)were investigated in a pot experiment.Brown rice As(As BR)content was irrelative to the watering treatments,while significantly decreased(>50%)with the addition of both ZVIB materials.The diminutions of brown rice Cd(Cd BR)content as well as the Yield BR were highly dependent on both the soil amendment materials’p H and watering amount.Among all the watering treatments,3/72 treatment(15%less irrigation water than the CON)with ZVIB 6.3 amendment was the optimum fit for simultaneous reduction of As BR(50%)and Cd BR contents(19%)as well as for significant increment(12%)of the Yield BR.Although high pH(9.7)ZVIB application could also efficiently decrease As and Cd contents in brown rice,it might risk grain yield lost if appropriate(e.g.3/72 in our study)watering management technique was not chosen.Therefore,ZVIB would be an environmentally friendly option as an amendment material with proper selection of watering management technique to utilize As and Cd co-contaminated arable soils safely for paddy cultivation.Md Shafiqul Islam Yali Chen Liping Weng Jie Ma Zulqarnain Haider Khan Zhongbin Liao Abdoul Salam Issiaka Abdoul Magid Yongtao Li 2021Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,2:9

In order to satisfy the service demand of intelligent logistics, this paper designed an intelligent logistics platform containing the main applications such as e-commerce, self-service transceiver, big data analysis, path location and distribution optimization. The intelligent logistics service platform has been built based on cloud computing to collect, store and handling multi-source heterogeneous mass data from sensors, RFID electronic tag, vehicle terminals and APP, so that the open-access cloud services including distribution, positioning, navigation, scheduling and other data services can be provided for the logistics distribution applications. And then the architecture of intelligent logistics cloud platform containing software layer(SaaS), platform layer(PaaS) and infrastructure(IaaS) has been constructed accordance with the core technology relative high concurrent processing technique, heterogeneous terminal data access, encapsulation and data mining. 6Adsorptive removal of iron and manganese ions from aqueous solutions with microporous chitosan/polyethylene glycol blend membrane显示文摘Microporous chitosan(CS) membranes were directly prepared by extraction of poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) from CS/PEG blend membrane and were examined for iron and manganese ions removal from aqueous solutions.The different variables affecting the adsorption capacity of the membranes such as contact time,pH of the sorption medium,and initial metal ion concentration in the feed solution were investigated on a batch adsorption basis.The affinity of CS/PEG blend membrane to adsorb Fe(II) ions is higher than that of Mn(II) ions,with adsorption equilibrium achieved after 60 min for Fe(II) and Mn(II) ions.By increasing CS/PEG ratio in the blend membrane the adsorption capacity of metal ions increased.Among all parameters,pH has the most significant effect on the adsorption capacity,particularly in the range of 2.9-5.9.The increase in CS/PEG ratio was found to enhance the adsorption capacity of the membranes.The effects of initial concentration of metal ions on the extent of metal ions removal were investigated in detail.The experimental data were better fitted to Freundlich equation than Langmuir.In addition,it was found that the iron and manganese ions adsorbed on the membranes can be effectively desorbed in 0.1 mol/L HCl solution(up to 98% desorption efficiency) and the blend membranes can be reused almost without loss of the adsorption capacity for iron and manganese ions.Neama A.Reiad Omar E.Abdel Salam Ehab F.Abadir Farid A.Harraz 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,8:7

Applying this to the coradical C0 of an arbitrary coalgebra C, we give an alternative definition of the Gabriel quiver of C, and then show that it coincides with the known Ext quiver of C and the link quiver of C. The dual Gabriel theorem for a coalgebra with a separable coradical is obtained, which generalizes the corresponding result for a pointed coalgebra. We also give a new description of C1 = C0 ∧X C0 of any coalgebra C, which can be regarded as a generalization of the first part of the well-known Taft-Wilson Theorem for pointed coalgebras. 9Endophytic bacteria associated with endangered plant Ferula sinkiangensis K. M. Shen in an arid land: diversity and plant growth-promoting traits显示文摘Ferula spp. are traditional medicinal plants found in arid land. Large-scale excavation for extracting bioactive compounds from the plants in arid regions of Xinjiang over the last few years has, however, significantly decreased their distributions. Due to the urgent need for preservation of these plant resources, along with the need of searching for alternative source of the useful metabolites, it is important to screen the endophytic microbial resources associated with the plant Ferula sinkiangensis K. M. Shen. In the study, a total of 125 endophytic bacteria belonging to 3 phyla, 13 orders, 23 families, and 29 genera were isolated based on 16 SrRNA gene sequencing data. Among the different isolates, three strains isolated from roots were potential novel species of the genera Por phyrobacter, Paracoccus and Amycolatopsis. In this study, 79.4% and 57.1% of the total isolates were capable of producing indole-3-acetic acid(IAA) and siderophore, respectively. And, 40.6% of the strains inhibit the growth of fungal pathogen Alternaria alternata, 17.2% and 20.2% strains were positive for antagonism against Verticillium dahlia 991 and V. dahlia 7, respectively. 11Acid leaching of heavy metals from contaminated soil collected from Jeddah,Saudi Arabia:kinetic and thermodynamics studies显示文摘Urban soils polluted with heavy metals are of increasing concern because it is greatly affecting human health and the ecological systems.Hence,it is mandatory to understand the reasons behind this pollution and remediate the contaminated solid.The removal of heavy metals from contaminated soil samples collected from the vicinity of the sewage lake in Jeddah,Saudi Arabia,was explored.The leaching process was studied kinetically and thermodynamically for better understanding of the remediation process.The results showed that the soil samples were slightly basic in nature,and tend to be more neutral away from the main contaminated sewage lake area.The total metal content in the soil samples was measured using the aqua regia extractions by ICPOES and the results showed that many of the heavy metals present have significant concentrations above the tolerable limits.In general,the metal concentrations at different sites indicated that the heavy metal pollution is mainly due to the sewage discharge to the lake.The results showed excellent correlation between the concentrations of Co,As,and Hg with the distance from the main contaminated area.The leaching of Co,As,and Hg using 1.0 M hydrochloric acid from the soil was studied kinetically at different temperatures and the experimental results were fitted using different kinetics models.The experimental data were best described with two-constant rate and Elovich equation kinetic models.Also,the thermodynamic study showed that the leaching process was spontaneous,endothermic and accompanied with increase in the entropy.In general,the polluted soil could be remediated successfully from the heavy metals using the acid leaching procedure in a short period of time.Shorouq I.Alghanmi Amani F.Al Sulami Tahani A.El-Zayat Basma G.Alhogbi Mohamed Abdel Salam 2015International Soil and Water Conservation Research2015,3,3:4

15Linking multiple pathogenic pathways in Alzheimer's disease显示文摘Alzheimer's disease(AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder presenting as progressive cognitive decline with dementia that does not, to this day, benefit from any disease-modifying drug. Multiple etiologic pathways have been explored and demonstrate promising solutions. For example, iron ion chelators, such as deferoxamine, are a potential therapeutic solution around which future studies are being directed. Another promising domain is related to thrombin inhibitors. In this minireview, a common pathophysiological pathway is suggested for the pathogenesis of AD to prove that all these mechanisms converge onto the same cascade of neuroinflammatory events. This common pathway is initiated by the presence of vascular risk factors that induce brain tissue hypoxia, which leads to endothelial cell activation. However, the ensuing hypoxia stimulates the production and release of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory proteins. Furthermore, the endothelial activation may become excessive and dysfunctional in predisposed individuals, leading to thrombin activation and iron ion decompartmentalization. The oxidative stress that results from these modifications in the neurovascular unit will eventually lead to neuronal and glial cell death, ultimately leading to the development of AD. 16Impact of community-based interventions on HIV knowledge, attitudes, and transmission显示文摘In 2012,an estimated 35.3 million people lived with HIV,while approximately two million new HIV infections were reported.Community-based interventions(CBIs)for the prevention and control of HIV allow increased access and ease availability of medical care to population at risk,or already infected with,HIV.This paper evaluates the impact of CBIs on HIV knowledge,attitudes,and transmission.We included 39 studies on educational activities,counseling sessions,home visits,mentoring,women’s groups,peer leadership,and street outreach activities in community settings that aimed to increase awareness on HIV/AIDS risk factors and ensure treatment adherence.Our review findings suggest that CBIs to increase HIV awareness and risk reduction are effective in improving knowledge,attitudes,and practice outcomes as evidenced by the increased knowledge scores for HIV/AIDS(SMD:0.66,95%CI:0.25,1.07),protected sexual encounters(RR:1.19,95%CI:1.13,1.25),condom use(SMD:0.96,95%CI:0.03,1.58),and decreased frequency of sexual intercourse(RR:0.76,95%CI:0.61,0.96).Analysis shows that CBIs did not have any significant impact on scores for self-efficacy and communication.We found very limited evidence on community-based management for HIV infected population and prevention of mother-to-child transmission(MTCT)for HIV-infected pregnant women.Qualitative synthesis suggests that establishment of community support at the onset of HIV prevention programs leads to community acceptance and engagement.School-based delivery of HIV prevention education and contraceptive distribution have also been advocated as potential strategies to target high-risk youth group.Future studies should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of community delivery platforms for prevention of MTCT,and various emerging models of care to improve morbidity and mortality outcomes.Rehana A Salam Sarah Haroon Hashim H Ahmed Jai K Das Zulfiqar A Bhutta 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:3
17Impact of community-based interventions for the prevention and control of malaria on intervention coverage and health outcomes for the prevention and control of malaria显示文摘In this paper,we aim to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based interventions(CBIs)for the prevention and management of malaria.We conducted a systematic review and identified 42 studies for inclusion.Twenty-five of the included studies evaluated the impact of the community-based distribution of insecticide-treated nets(ITNs),indoor residual spraying(IRS),or impregnated bed sheets;14 studies evaluated intermittent preventive therapy(IPT)delivered in community settings;two studies focused on community-based education for malaria prevention;and one study evaluated environmental management through drain cleaning.Our analysis suggests that,overall,the community-based delivery of interventions to prevent and control malaria resulted in a significant increase in ITNs ownership(RR:2.16,95%CI:1.86,2.52)and usage(RR:1.77,95%CI:1.48,2.11).However,usage of ITNs was limited to two-thirds of the population who owned them.Community-based strategies also led to a significant decrease in parasitemia(RR:0.56,95%CI:0.42,0.74),malaria prevalence(RR:0.46,95%CI:0.29,0.73),malaria incidence(RR:0.70,95%CI:0.54,0.90),and anemia prevalence(RR:0.79,95%CI:0.64,0.97).We found a non-significant impact on splenomegaly,birth outcomes(low birth weight,prematurity,stillbirth/miscarriage),anthropometric measures(stunting,wasting,and underweight),and mortality(all-cause and malaria-specific).The subgroup analysis suggested that community-based distribution of ITNs,impregnated bed sheets and IRS,and IPT are effective strategies.Qualitative synthesis suggests that high coverage could be achieved at a lower cost with the integration of CBIs with existing antenatal care and immunization campaigns.Community-based delivery of interventions to prevent and control malaria are effective strategies to improve coverage and access and reduce malaria burden,however,efforts should also be concerted to prevent over diagnosis and drug resistance.Rehana A Salam Jai K Das Zohra S Lassi Zulfiqar A Bhutta 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:2
18Tackling the existing burden of infectious diseases in the developing world: existing gaps and the way forward显示文摘This series evaluates the effectiveness of community-based interventions(CBIs)to prevent and control infectious diseases of poverty(IDoP).Evidence from our reviews suggests that CBIs and school-based delivery platforms are effective in averting risk behaviors and reducing the disease burden.Co-implementation of interventions through existing community-based programs including immunization campaigns,antenatal care and maternal and child health programs have the potential to scale-up interventions for IDoP.Future research should focus on the process of developing and implementing efficient community-based programs through a comprehensive approach,and to gauge the effectiveness of various existing delivery models in order to improve morbidity and mortality outcomes.Zulfiqar A Bhutta Rehana A Salam Jai K Das 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:2
19Critical review of radio-frequency(RF)heating applications in food processing显示文摘Conventional thermal treatment in food processing relies on the transfer of heat by conduction and convection.One alternative to this conventional thermal treatment is radio-frequency(RF)heating in which electromagnetic energy is transferred directly to the heated product.The longer wavelengths of RF compared with microwaves are able to penetrate further into the food products resulting in more even heating.A review of RF heating for the food processing industry is presented here with an emphasis on scientific principles and the advantages and applications of RF.Applications of RF heating include blanching,thawing,drying,and processing of foods.RF heating represents considerable potential for additional research and the transfer of technology to the food processing industry.Computer simulation can be used to improve RF heating uniformity.Moreover,the heating uniformity in the rotated eggs is greater than in the static eggs.RF has also been used to blanch vegetables to increase ascorbic acid content to achieve the highest vitamin C levels.The use of the thawing technology has resulted in better quality of treated food.There has been increased interest in the RF-drying method due to the homogeneity of heating,greater penetration depth,and more stable control of the product temperature.RF-treated meat had improved quality and coagulation with acceptable taste and appearance.In addition,RF heating is used in pasteurization of yogurt and destruction of microorganisms in liquid and solid foods.Ammar Altemimi Salah Naji Aziz Asaad R.S.Al-HiIphy Naoufal Lakhssassi Dennis G.Watson Salam A.Ibrahim 2019Food Quality and Safety2019,3,2:2
20Conceptual design,modeling and compliance characterization of a novel 2-DOF rotational pointing mechanism for fast steering mirror显示文摘In this paper,a novel 2-DOF rotational pointing mechanism(RPM)is designed inspired by the guidelines of the graphical approach.The mechanism integrates with a fast steering mirror(FSM)for compensating pointing errors of a laser beam.The design intends to achieve an angular travel of±10 mrad and steers a 25 mm mirror aperture.A planar flexure with beam flexures accompanied in parallel with an axial flexure build-up mechanism configuration.Compliant mechanismbased RPM ensures high precision and compactness.Compliance characteristics are established based on the stiffness matrix method for four different planar flexure layouts.One layout with best in-plane rotational compliance is then assessed for performance sensitivity to mechanism dimension parameters and parasitic error,thus informing the design space.Rotational stiffness in both the inplane rotational axes and stress is determined based on finite element analysis(FEA).The wire electrical discharge machining(EDM)is employed for developing the proof of concept for the RPM and is then assembled in FSM.Experiments are conducted to determine the rotational stiffness and angular travel about both in-plane rotational axes.Comparison among theoretical,numerical and experiments reveal excellent linearity of rotational stiffness along the rotational travel range.The maximum theoretical error is less than 5.5%compared with FEA while,the experimental error has a mean of 5%and 3%for both rotational axes thus satisfying the intended design requirement.Muhammad ABID Jingjun YU Yan XIE Abdus SALAM 2020Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2020,33,12:2
