Residual Attention Deep SVDD for COVID-19 Diagnosis Using CT Scans显示文摘COVID-19 is the common name of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV)that appeared in Wuhan,China in 2019.Discovering the infected people is the most important factor in the fight against the disease. The gold-standard test to diagnose COVID-19 is polymerase chain reaction(PCR),but it takes 5–6 h and,in the early stages of infection, may produce false-negative results.Examining Computed Tomography(CT)images to diagnose patients infected with COVID-19 has become an urgent necessity. In this study,we propose a residual attention deep support vector data description SVDD(RADSVDD)approach to diagnose COVID-19.It is a novel approach combining residual attention with deep support vector data description(DSVDD)to classify the CT images. To the best of our knowledge,we are the first to combine residual attention with DSVDD in general, and specifically in the diagnosis of COVID-19.Combining attention with DSVDD naively may cause model collapse.Attention in the proposed RADSVDD guides the network during training and enables quick learning, residual connectivity prevents vanishing gradients. Our approach consists of three models, each model is devoted to recognizing one certain disease and classifying other diseases as anomalies. These models learn in an end-to-end fashion. The proposed approach attained high performance in classifying CT images into intact,COVID-19,and non-COVID-19 pneumonia. To evaluate the proposed approach,we created a dataset from published datasets and had it assessed by an experienced radiologist. The proposed approach achieved high performance, with the normal model attained sensitivity(0.96–0.98),specificity(0.97–0.99),F1-score(0.97–0.98),and area under the receiver operator curve(AUC)0.99;the COVID-19 model attained sensitivity(0.97–0.98),specificity(0.97–0.99),F1-score(0.97–0.99),and AUC 0.99;and the non-COVID pneumoniamodel attained sensitivity(0.97–1),specificity(0.98–0.99),F1-score(0.97–0.99),and AUC 0.99. | Akram Ali Alhadad Omar Tarawneh Reham R.Mostafa Hazem M.El-Bakry | 2023 | Computers, Materials & Continua2023,,2: | 0
Microalgae-based wastewater treatment:Mechanisms, challenges, recent advances, and future prospects显示文摘The rapid expansion of both the global economy and the human population has led to a shortage of water resources suitable for direct human consumption. As a result, water remediation will inexorably become the primary focus on a global scale.Microalgae can be grown in various types of wastewaters(WW).They have a high potential to remove contaminants from the effluents of industries and urban areas. This review focuses on recent advances on WW remediation through microalgae cultivation.Attention has already been paid to microalgae-based wastewater treatment(WWT)due to its low energy requirements, the strong ability of microalgae to thrive under diverse environmental conditions, and the potential to transform WW nutrients into high-value compounds. It turned out that microalgae-based WWT is an economical and sustainable solution. Moreover, different types of toxins are removed by microalgae through biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation processes.Examples are toxins from agricultural runoffs and textile and pharmaceutical industrial effluents.Microalgae have the potential to mitigate carbon dioxide and make use of the micronutrients that are present in the effluents. This review paper highlights the application of microalgae in WW remediation and the remediation of diverse types of pollutants commonly present in WW through different mechanisms, simultaneous resource recovery, and efficient microalgae-based co-culturing systems along with bottlenecks and prospects. | Abdallah Abdelfattah Sameh Samir Ali Hassan Ramadan Eslam Ibrahim El-Aswar Reham Eltawab Shih-Hsin Ho Tamer Elsamahy Shengnan Li Mostafa M.El-Sheekh Michael Schagerl Michael Kornaros Jianzhong Sun | 2023 | Environmental Science and Ecotechnology2023,,1: | 0
Infectious causes of fever of unknown origin in developing countries: An international ID-IRI study显示文摘Background:Fever of unknown origin(FUO)in developing countries is an important dilemma and further research is needed to elucidate the infectious causes of FUO.Methods:A multi-center study for infectious causes of FUO in lower middle-income countries(LMIC)and lowincome countries(LIC)was conducted between January 1,2018 and January 1,2023.In total,15 participating centers from seven different countries provided the data, which were collected through the Infectious DiseasesInternational Research Initiative platform.Only adult patients with confirmed infection as the cause of FUO were included in the study. The severity parameters were quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(qSOFA)≥2,intensive care unit(ICU)admission, vasopressor use,and invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV).Results:A total of 160 patients with infectious FUO were included in the study.Overall,148(92.5%)patients had community-acquired infections and 12(7.5%)had hospital-acquired infections. The most common infectious syndromes were tuberculosis(TB)(n=27,16.9%),infective endocarditis(n=25,15.6%),malaria(n=21,13.1%),brucellosis(n=15,9.4%),and typhoid fever(n=9,5.6%).Plasmodium falciparum,Mycobacterium tuberculosis,Brucellae,Staphylococcus aureus,Salmonella typhi, and Rickettsiae were the leading infectious agents in this study.A total of 56(35.0%)cases had invasive procedures for diagnosis. The mean qSOFA score was 0.76±0.94{median(interquartile range[IQR]):0(0–1)}.ICU admission(n=26,16.2%),vasopressor use(n=14,8.8%),and IMV(n=10,6.3%)were not rare.Overall,38(23.8%)patients had at least one of the severity parameters. The mortality rate was 15(9.4%),and the mortality was attributable to the infection causing FUO in 12(7.5%)patients.Conclusions:In LMIC and LIC,tuberculosis and cardiac infections were the most severe and the leading infections causing FUO. | Hakan Erdem Jaffar AAl-Tawfiq Maha Abid Wissal Ben Yahia George Akafity Manar Ezzelarab Ramadan Fatma Amer Amani El-Kholy Atousa Hakamifard Bilal Ahmad Rahimi Farouq Dayyab Hulya Caskurlu Reham Khedr Muhammad Tahir Lysien Zambrano Mumtaz Ali Khan Aun Raza Nagwa Mostafa El-Sayed Magdalena Baymakova Aysun Yalci Yasemin Cag Umran Elbahr Aamer Ikram | 2024 | Journal of Intensive Medicine2024,4,1: | 0
Deep-Net:Fine-Tuned Deep Neural Network Multi-Features Fusion for Brain Tumor Recognition显示文摘Manual diagnosis of brain tumors usingmagnetic resonance images(MRI)is a hectic process and time-consuming.Also,it always requires an expert person for the diagnosis. Therefore, many computer-controlled methods for diagnosing and classifying brain tumors have been introduced in the literature. This paper proposes a novel multimodal brain tumor classification framework based on two-way deep learning feature extraction and a hybrid feature optimization algorithm.NasNet-Mobile,a pre-trained deep learning model, has been fine-tuned and twoway trained on original and enhancedMRI images. The haze-convolutional neural network(haze-CNN)approach is developed and employed on the original images for contrast enhancement.Next, transfer learning(TL)is utilized for training two-way fine-tuned models and extracting feature vectors from the global average pooling layer. Then, using a multiset canonical correlation analysis(CCA)method, features of both deep learning models are fused into a single feature matrix—this technique aims to enhance the information in terms of features for better classification.Although the information was increased, computational time also jumped. This issue is resolved using a hybrid feature optimization algorithm that chooses the best classification features. The experiments were done on two publicly available datasets—BraTs2018 and BraTs2019—and yielded accuracy rates of 94.8%and 95.7%,respectively.The proposedmethod is comparedwith several recent studies andoutperformed inaccuracy. In addition,we analyze the performance of each middle step of the proposed approach and find the selection technique strengthens the proposed framework. | Muhammad Attique Khan Reham R.Mostafa Yu-Dong Zhang Jamel Baili Majed Alhaisoni Usman Tariq Junaid Ali Khan Ye Jin Kim Jaehyuk Cha | 2023 | Computers, Materials & Continua2023,76,9: | 0
Evaluating the influence of 6 MV and 15 MV photon beams on prostate intensity-modulated radiation therapy plans显示文摘Objective We aimed to determine the effects of low- and high-energy intensity-modulated radiation therapy(IMRT) photon beams on the target volume planning and on the critical organs in the case of prostate cancer. Methods Thirty plans were generated by using either 6 MV or 15 MV beams separately, and a combination of both 6 and 15 MV beams. All plans were generated by using suitable planning objectives and dose constraints, which were identical across the plans, except the beam energy. The plans were analyzed in terms of their target coverage, conformity, and homogeneity, regardless of the beam energy. Results The mean percentage values of V_(70 Gy) for the rectal wall for the plans with 6 MV, 15 MV, and mixedenergy beams were 16.9%, 17.8%, and 16.4%, respectively, while the mean percentage values of V_(40 Gy) were 53.6%, 52.3%, and 50.4%. The mean dose values to the femoral heads for the 6 MV, 15 MV, and mixed-energy plans were 30.1 Gy, 25.5 Gy, and 25.4 Gy, respectively. The mean integral dose for the 6 MV plans was 10% larger than those for the 15 MV and mixed-energy plans. Conclusion These preliminary results suggest that mixed-energy IMRT plans may be advantageous with respect to the dosimetric characteristics of low- and high-energy beams. Although the reduction of dose to the organs at risk may not be clinically relevant, in this study, IMRT plans using mixed-energy beams exhibited better OAR sparing and overall higher plan quality for deep-seated tumors. | Reham A.El Gendy Ehab M.Attalla Yasser M.Elkerm Ali Alfarrash | 2016 | Oncology and Translational Medicine2016,2,1: | 0
Clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes of brain stem gliomas in Saudi population显示文摘AIM: To analyze experiences to identify treatment outcomes and prognostic factors in a Saudi population.METHODS: Medical records of patients with brainstem gliomas treated from July 2001 to December 2012 were reviewed to identify treatment outcomes of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy and associated prognostic factors in a Saudi population.RESULTS: We analyzed 49 brain stem glioma(BSG) patients from July 2001 to December 2012; 31 of them were males(63.3%) with a median age of 12.6 years(range: 8-64 mo). Twenty-two patients(44.9%) had diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas(DIPG) and 15(30.6%) presented with focal/tectal BSG. Histopathology was available in 30 patients(61.2%). Median survival time for the whole cohort was 1.5 years. One and two year OS rates were 51.1% and 41.9% respectively. Two year OS rates for focal/tectal, dorsally exophytic, cervicomedullary and DIPG tumors were 60%, 33.3%, 33.3% and 13.6% respectively(P < 0.0001). Significant prognostic factors related to OS were age at diagnosis(worse for > 18 years) P = 0.01, KPS < 70 P = 0.02, duration of symptoms(< 60 d) P = 0.002, histology(better for favorable) P = 0.002, surgery(maximal resection) P = 0.002, and concurrent chemotherapy with radiation therapy in DIPG(better if given) P = 0.01.CONCLUSION: BSG, especially the DIPG subgroup, had a dismal prognosis, needing more aggressive neurosurgical, radiation and chemotherapy techniques, while focal and tectal tumors were found to have a better prognosis. | Yasser Bayoumi Abdulrahman J Sabbagh Reham Mohamed Usama M El Shokhaiby Ahmed Marzouk Maklad Mutahir A Tunio Ali Abdullah O Balbaid | 2014 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2014,5,5: | 0
