| 1 | Clinical significance of Helicobacter pylori cagA and iceA genotype status显示文摘AIM:To study the presence of Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) virulence factors and clinical outcome in H.pylori infected patients.METHODS:A prospective analysis of ninety nine H.pylori-positive patients who underwent endoscopy in our Endoscopy suite were included in this study.DNA was isolated from antral biopsy samples and the presence of cagA,iceA,and iceA2 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and a reverse hybridization technique.Screening for H.pylori infection was performed in all patients using the rapid urease test(CLO-Test).RESULTS:From a total of 326 patients who underwent endoscopy for upper gastrointestinal symptoms,99 patients were determined to be H.pylori-positive.Peptic ulceration was seen in 33 patients(33%).The main virulence strain observed in this cohort was the cagA gene isolated in 43 patients.cagA was associated with peptic ulcer pathology in 39.5%(17/43) and in 28%(16/56) of non-ulcer patients.IceA1 was present in 29 patients(29%) and iceA2 in 15 patients(15%).Ulcer pathology was seen in 39%(11/29) of patients with iceA1,while 31%(22/70) had normal findings.The corresponding values for iceA2 were 33%(5/15) and 33%(28/84),respectively.CONCLUSION:Virulence factors were not common in our cohort.The incidence of factors cagA,iceA1 and iceA2 were very low although variations were noted in different ethnic groups. | Nasser Amjad Hussain Ali Osman Najibah Abdul Razak Junaini Kassian Jeffri Din Nasuruddin bin Abdullah | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,35: | 7 |
| 2 | Survival analysis of cholangiocarcinoma:A 10-year experience in Malaysia显示文摘AIM:To investigate the clinical features and survival of patients treated for cholangiocarcinoma in our institution and to analyze the factors affecting their survival.METHODS:This retrospective cohort study assessed patients diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma between January 1997 and December 2007 at the University Malaya Medical Centre in Malaysia.The clinical data and associated outcomes were collected using a structured proforma.RESULTS:Of the 69 patients diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma,38 (55%) were male;mean patient age was 61 years.Twelve patients (17%) had intrahepatic,38 (55%) had perihilar and 19 (28%) had distal tumors.Only 12 patients underwent curative surgery,including seven R0 resections.Only one patient died within 30 d after surgery.The overall median survival was 4 mo,whereas the median survival of R0 resected patients was 16 mo.The overall 1-,2-and 3-year cumulative survival rates were 67%,17% and 17%,respectively.Survival rates were significantly associated with curative resection (P=0.002),intrahepatic tumor (P=0.003),negative margin status (P=0.013),early tumor stage (P=0.016),higher tumor differentiation (P=0.032) and absence of jaundice (P=0.038).Multivariate analysis showed that tumor location was a significant independent predictor of patient survival.CONCLUSION:Curative,margin-negative resection of early stage,well-differentiated intrahepatic tumors is associated with improved patient survival. | Ahmad Ramzi Yusoff Mohd Muzammil Abdul Razak Yoong Boon Koon R Vijeyasingam Siti Zuraidah Mahmud | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,5: | 7 |
| 3 | Dual-specificity phosphatase 6(DUSP6): a review of its molecular characteristics and clinical relevance in cancer显示文摘Mitogen-activated protein kinases(MAPKs) are the main regulators of cellular proliferation, growth, and survival in physiological or pathological conditions. Aberrant MAPK signaling plays a pivotal role in carcinogenesis, which leads to development and progression of human cancer. Dual-specificity phosphatase 6(DUSP6), a member of the MAPK phosphatase family, interacts with specifically targeted extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 via negative feedback regulation in the MAPK pathway of mammalian cells. This phosphatase functions in a dual manner, pro-oncogenic or tumor-suppressive, depending on the type of cancer. To date, the tumor-suppressive role of DUSP6 has been demonstrated in pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal squamous cell and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and ovarian cancer. Its pro-oncogenic role has been observed in human glioblastoma, thyroid carcinoma, breast cancer, and acute myeloid carcinoma. Both roles of DUSP6 have been documented in malignant melanoma depending on the histological subtype of the cancer. Loss-or gain-of-function effects of DUSP6 in these cancers highlights the significance of this phosphatase in carcinogenesis. Development of methods that use the DUSP6 gene as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment or as a prognostic factor for diagnosis and evaluation of cancer treatment outcome has great potential. | 9 | Clinical profile of brucellosis from a tertiary care center in southern India显示文摘Objective:To highlight the spectrum of clinical manifestations,labs,complications,treatment and outcome of brucellosis.Methods:Retrospective study was conducted in Kasturba Medical College,Manipal University,Karnataka,India which included 68 confirmed cases of brucellosis from January 2006- April 2010.Diagnosis of brucellosis was made by culturing the sera/body fluids by standard BACTEC method(or) by testing the sera for Brucella agglutinins using the standard agglutination test(SAT).A titer of 1:320 or more was considered as significant.SPSS 16 was used for statistical analysis and Microsoft Excel for graphical representation.Results:Of the 68 patients,46(68%) were male and 22(32%) were female patients with age distribution of 9-75 years.Forty four(64.7%) had history of contact with unpasteurized dairy products or infected animals.Symptoms included fever(68,100%),myalgia(21,31%),musculoskeletal symptoms (23,34%),headache(16,24%),gastrointestinal symptoms(19,28%) and altered sensorium(3, 4%).Co-morbidities and associations included HIV positivity(2,3%),type 2 diabetes mellitus (13,19%),steroid therapy(3,4%) and HBsAg positivity(8,12%).Ten(15%) patients had cervical lymphadenopathy,4(6%) had splenic enlargement,6(7%) had hepatomegaly,19(28%) had hepatosplenomegaly and 2(3%) got meningeal signs.Anaemia was observed in 39(57.3%) cases,high erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR) was present in 55(80.8%) cases,leucocytosis in 10(14.7%),leucopenia in 10(14.7%),thrombocytopenia in 23(33.82%) and thrombocytosis in 2(2.94%) cases.Conclusions:In countries like India,where brucellosis and tuberculosis are endemic;rapid,sensitive and highly specific diagnostic methods are required to make early diagnosis and prevent resistance as there is an overlap in therapy. | Vishwanath Sathyanarayanan Abdul Razak Kavitha Saravu Shastry Barkur Ananthakrishna Mukhyprana Prabhu M Vandana KE | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,5: | 3 |
| 10 | Effect of quarry dust addition on the performance of controlled low-strength material made from industrial waste incineration bottom ash显示文摘The performance of industrial waste incineration bottom ash in controlled low-strength material (CLSM) was investigated in this paper, as the quarry dust was added. CLSM mixtures were made from the industrial waste incineration bottom ash, quarry dust, and cement. Tests for fresh density, bleeding, compressive strength, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, and excavatability were carried out. The com-pressive strength ranges from 60 kPa to 6790 kPa, the friction angle varies from 5° to 19°, and the cohesion is from 4 to 604 kPa. Most of the mixtures are found to be non-excavatable. | 13 | Water Quality Index Using Modified Random Forest Technique: Assessing Novel Input Features显示文摘Water quality analysis is essential to understand the ecological status of aquatic life.Conventional water quality index(WQI)assessment methods are limited to features such as water acidic or basicity(pH),dissolved oxygen(DO),biological oxygen demand(BOD),chemical oxygen demand(COD),ammoniacal nitrogen(NH3-N),and suspended solids(SS).These features are often insufficient to represent the water quality of a heavy metal–polluted river.Therefore,this paper aims to explore and analyze novel input features in order to formulate an improved WQI.In this work,prospective insights on the feasibility of alternative water quality input variables as new discriminant features are discussed.The new discriminant features are a step toward formulating adaptive water quality parameters according to the land use activities surrounding the river.The results and analysis obtained from this study have proven the possibility of predicting WQI using new input features.This work analyzes 17 new input features,namely conductivity(COND),salinity(SAL),turbidity(TUR),dissolved solids(DS),nitrate(NO3),chloride(Cl),phosphate(PO4),arsenic(As),chromium(Cr),zinc(Zn),calcium(Ca),iron(Fe),potassium(K),magnesium(Mg),sodium(Na),E.coli,and total coliform,in predicting WQI using machine learning techniques.Five regression algorithms-random forest(RF),AdaBoost,support vector regression(SVR),decision tree regression(DTR),and multilayer perception(MLP)-are applied for preliminary model selection.The results show that the RF algorithm exhibits better prediction performance,with R2 of 0.974.Then,this work proposes a modified RF by incorporating the synthetic minority oversampling technique(SMOTE)into the conventional RF method.The proposed modified RF method is shown to achieve 77.68%,74%,69%,and 71%accuracy,precision,recall,and F1-score,respectively.In addition,the sensitivity analysis is included to highlight the importance of the turbidity variable in WQI prediction.The results of sensitivity analysis highlight the importance of certain water quality variables that are not present in the conventional WQI formulation. | Wen Yee Wong Ayman Khallel Ibrahim Al-Ani Khairunnisa Hasikin Anis Salwa Mohd Khairuddin Sarah Abdul Razak Hanee Farzana Hizaddin Mohd Istajib Mokhtar Muhammad Mokhzaini Azizan | 2022 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2022,,9: | 2 |
