1Antioxidant and antimutagenic activities of bark extract of Terminalia arjuna显示文摘Objective:The alcoholic extract of stem bark of Terminalia arjuna(ALTA) was screened for antioxidant and antimutagenic(anticlastogenic) activity.Methods:Antioxidant property was determined by l,l,Diphynyl,2-Picryl hydrazyl(DPPH) assay,super oxide radical scavenging activity,lipid peroxidation assay and total polyphenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent.Antimutagenic activity was evaluated using micronucleus test in mice. Results:The ALTA has shown potent antioxidant activity with EC50 of 2.491±0.160,50.110±0.150 & 71.000±0.250 in DPPH assay,superoxide radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation assay, which is comparable with ascorbic acid with EC50 of 2.471±0.140,40.500±0.390 and 63.000±0.360 respectively.In micronucleus test,ALTA(100 & 200 mg/kg,p.o.) showed significant reduction in percentage of micronucleus in both polychromatic erythrocytes(PCE) and normochromatie erythrocytes(NCE) and also shown significant reduction in P/N ratio.Conclusions:These results suggested that ALTA possess significant antioxidant and antimutagenic activity.Gollapalle Lakshminarayana shastry Viswanatha Santosh Kumar Vaidya Ramesh C Nandakumar Krishnadas Srinath Rangappa 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,12:9
2Genetically modified mouse models for the study of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is associated with obesity,insulin resistance,and type 2 diabetes.NAFLD represents a large spectrum of diseases ranging from(1) fatty liver(hepatic steatosis);(2) steatosis with inflammation and necrosis;to(3) cirrhosis.The animal models to study NAFLD/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) are extremely useful,as there are still many events to be elucidated in the pathology of NASH.The study of the established animal models has provided many clues in the pathogenesis of steatosis and steatohepatitis,but these remain incompletely understood.The different mouse models can be classified in two large groups.The first one includes genetically modified(transgenic or knockout) mice that spontaneously develop liver disease,and the second one includes mice that acquire the disease after dietary or pharmacological manipulation.Although the molecular mechanism leading to the development of hepatic steatosis in the pathogenesis of NAFLD is complex,genetically modified animal models may be a key for the treatment of NAFLD.Ideal animal models for NASH should closely resemble the pathological characteristics observed in humans.To date,no single animal model has encompassed the full spectrum of human disease progression,but they can imitate particular characteristics of human disease.Therefore,it is important that the researchers choose the appropriate animal model.This review discusses various genetically modified animal models developed and used in research on NAFLD.Perumal Nagarajan M Jerald Mahesh Kuma Ramasamy Venkatesan Subeer S Majundar Ramesh C Juyal M Jerald Mahesh Kuma 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,11:7
3Endoscopic closure of a gastrocolic fistula using the over-the-scope-clip-system显示文摘Gastrointestinal (GI) defects such as fistulas and leaks can be potentially closed endoscopically using hemo-clips and loops. However, hemoclips may not allow for closure of large defects and they do not exert enough tensile force to keep fibrotic defects larger than 5 mm approximated. Herein we present a case of successful endoscopic closure of a gastrocolic fistula in a severely malnourished patient with complex post-surgical upper GI anatomy. We strongly believe that this device is a major breakthrough for the management of various types of discontinuity defects or fistulas. In addition, we show the usefulness of placing a direct jejunostomy using the double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) technique during the same procedure. The concept of providing direct jejunal feedings while allowing for upper gas-trointestinal bowel rest to promote the healing of the minimally invasive endoscopic operation is novel.
