| 2 | Salt Tolerance in Soybean显示文摘Soybean is an important cash crop and its productivity is significantly hampered by salt stress. High salt imposes negative impacts on growth, nodulation, agronomy traits, seed quality and quantity, and thus reduces the yield of soybean. To cope with salt stress, soybean has developed several tolerance mechanisms, including: (i) maintenance of ion homeostasis; (ii) adjustment in response to osmotic stress; (iii) restoration of osmotic balance; and (iv) other metabolic and structural adaptations. The regulatory network for abiotic stress responses in higher plants has been studied extensively in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana. Some homologous components involved in salt stress responses have been identified in soybean. | 3 | Effects of Boundary Conditions on the Design of Anti-Ram Bollards显示文摘Anti-ram bollards used in perimeter protection are tested to meet performance requirements of established standards such as the US Department of State Specification SD-STD-02.01. Under these standards, tests are conducted in prescribed conditions that should be representative of the service installation. In actual project, conditions encountered on site may vary from the test environment and it would be expensive and time consuming to validate each deviation with a physical test. High-fidelity physics-based (HFPB) finite element modeling can provide precise simulations of the behavior of anti-ram bollards. This paper presents the use of HFPB finite element modeling, using LS-DYNA, in an actual project to evaluate the performance of an anti-ram bollard design subjected to various boundary conditions representing the physical conditions encountered on site. The study shows that boundary conditions can have a significant influence on the performance of the anti-ram bollards. This suggests that anti-ram bollards must be designed and engineered according to actual conditions that are found on site. | 4 | An Enhanced Hadoop Heartbeat Mechanism for MapReduce Task Scheduler Using Dynamic Calibration显示文摘MapReduce is a popular program ming model for processing large-scale dataset in a distributed environment and is a funda mental component of current cloud comput ing and big data applications. In this paper a heartbeat mechanism for MapReduce Task Scheduler using Dynamic Calibration(HMTS DC) is proposed to address the unbalanced node computation capacity problem in a het erogeneous MapReduce environment. HMTS DC uses two mechanisms to dynamically adapt and balance tasks assigned to each com pute node: 1) using heartbeat to dynamically estimate the capacity of the compute nodes and 2) using data locality of replicated data blocks to reduce data transfer between nodes With the first mechanism, based on the heart beats received during the early state of the job the task scheduler can dynamically estimate the computational capacity of each node. Us ing the second mechanism, unprocessed Task local to each compute node are reassigned and reserved to allow nodes with greater capacitie to reserve more local tasks than their weake counterparts. Experimental results show tha HMTS-DC performs better than Hadoop and Dynamic Data Placement Strategy(DDP) in a dynamic environment. Furthermore, an en hanced HMTS-DC(EHMTS-DC) is proposed by incorporating historical data. In contrasto the 'slow start' property of HMTS-DC, EHMTS-DC relies on the historical computation capacity of the slave machines. | 6 | Effects of elevated temperatures on growth and photosynthetic performance of polar Chlorella显示文摘Global warming has been the subject of concern in today’s world with elevating temperature causing the melting of polar ice and increasing sea level.The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological and photosynthetic performance of two polar Chlorella,namely Chlorella UMACC 250 and Chlorella UMACC 234 to elevating temperatures as might be experienced under future warming scenarios.The cultures were exposed to three different temperatures of 4℃,8℃and 12℃.The growth and photosynthetic activity were determined every 2 d for a period of 10 d.At the end of the experiment,the cultures were harvested and analysed for biochemical composition.Both Chlorella strains were able to tolerate higher temperatures than their ambient temperature.The final pigments content showed an increasing trend with increased temperatures for both strains.The photosynthetic activities were measured using pulse-amplitude modulation(PAM)fluorometer.The photosynthetic parameters including maximum quantum efficiency(Fv/Fm),maximum relative electron transport rate(r ETRmax),light harvesting efficiency(a)and photoadaptive index(Ek)were derived from the rapid light curves(RLCs).Both Chlorella strains showed a slight decline in growth and photosynthetic activities at the initial part of the experiment.However,they showed the ability to recuperate with Chlorella UMACC 250 recovers better compared to Chlorella UMACC 234.Both Chlorella strains showed similar trend in their carbohydrate content at 12℃,while the protein content of Chlorella UMACC 234 decreased when exposed to increasing temperatures.The results indicated that polar Chlorella are able to survive at increased temperatures throughout the experiment. | Syazana ANUWAR Ming-Li TEOH Wei-Hsum YAP Fong-Lee NG Siew-Moi PHANG | 2020 | Advances in Polar Science2020,31,2: | 2 |
