| 4 | On the combined effect of soil fertility and topography on tree growth in subtropical forest ecosystems—a study from SE China显示文摘Aims The aim of our research was to understand small-scale effects of topography and soil fertility on tree growth in a forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning(BEF)experiment in subtropical SE China.Methods Geomorphometric terrain analyses were carried out at a spatial resolution of 5×5 m.Soil samples of different depth increments and data on tree height were collected from a total of 566 plots(667 m2 each).The soils were analyzed for carbon(soil organic carbon[SOC]),nitrogen,acidity,cation exchange capacity(CEC),exchangeable cations and base saturation as soil fertility attributes.All plots were classified into geomorphological units.Analyses of variance and linear regressions were applied to all terrain,soil fertility and tree growth attributes.Important Findings In general,young and shallow soils and relatively small differences in stable soil properties suggest that soil erosion has truncated the soils to a large extent over the whole area of the experiment.This explains the concurrently increasing CEC and SOC stocks downslope,in hollows and in valleys.However,colluvial,carbon-rich sediments are missing widely due to the convexity of the footslopes caused by uplift and removal of eroded sediments by adjacent waterways.The results showed that soil fertility is mainly influenced by topography.Monte-Carlo flow accumulation(MCCA),curvature,slope and aspect significantly affected soil fertility.Furthermore,soil fertility was affected by the different geomorphological positions on the experimental sites with ridge and spur positions showing lower exchangeable base cation contents,especially potassium(K),due to leaching.This geomorphological effect of soil fertility is most pronounced in the topsoil and decreases when considering the subsoil down to 50 cm depth.Few soil fertility attributes affect tree height after 1-2 years of growth,among which C stocks proved to be most important while pH_(KCl)and CEC only played minor roles.Nevertheless,soil acidity and a high proportion of Al on the exchange complex affected tree height even after only 1-2 years growth.Hence,our study showed that forest nutrition is coupled to a recycling of litter nutrients,and does not only depend on subsequent supply of nutrients from the mineral soil.Besides soil fertility,topography affected tree height.We found that especially MCCA as indicator of water availability affected tree growth at small-scale,as well as aspect.Overall,our synthesis on the interrelation between fertility,topography and tree growth in a subtropical forest ecosystem in SE China showed that topographic heterogeneity lead to ecological gradients across geomorphological positions.In this respect,small-scale soil-plant interactions in a young forest can serve as a driver for the future development of vegetation and biodiversity control on soil fertility.In addition,it shows that terrain attributes should be accounted for in ecological research. | Thomas Scholten Philipp Goebes Peter Kühn Steffen Seitz Thorsten Assmann Jürgen Bauhus Helge Bruelheide Francois Buscot Alexandra Erfmeier Markus Fischer Werner Härdtle Jin-Sheng He Keping Ma Pascal A.Niklaus Michael Scherer-Lorenzen Bernhard Schmid Xuezheng Shi Zhengshan Song Goddert von Oheimb Christian Wirth Tesfaye Wubet Karsten Schmidt | 2017 | Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1: | 22 |

| 6 | Effect of Silicon on Growth, Physiology, and Cadmium Translocation of Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil显示文摘Silicon(Si) offers beneficial effect on plants under cadmium(Cd) stress such as promoting plant growth and increasing resistance to heavy metal toxicity. In this study, a pot experiment was performed to study the role of Si in alleviating Cd toxicity in tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants on a yellow soil taken from Guiyang, China. Nine treatments consisting of three concentrations of Cd(0, 1, and 5 mg kg^(-1)) together with three Si levels(0, 1, and 4 g kg^(-1)) were established. Plant growth parameters, Cd concentration,and the malondialdehyde(MDA), chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents were determined 100 d after transplanting of tobacco seedlings.Application of exogenous Si enhanced the growth of tobacco plants under Cd stress. When 5 mg kg^(-1) Cd was added, Si addition at 1 and 4 g kg^(-1) increased root, stem, and leaf biomass by 26.1%–43.3%, 33.7%–43.8%, and 50.8%–69.9%, respectively, compared to Si addition at 0 g kg^(-1). With Si application, the transfer factor of Cd in tobacco from root to shoot under both 1 and 5 mg kg^(-1) Cd treatments decreased by 21%. The MDA contents in the Si-treated tobacco plants declined by 5.5%–17.1% compared to those in the non-Si-treated plants, indicating a higher Cd tolerance. Silicon application also increased the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents by 33.9%–41% and 25.8%–47.3% compared to the Cd only treatments. | 8 | Validity assessment and determination of the cutoff value for the Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need among 12-13 year-olds in Southern Chinese显示文摘To validate the use of the Index of Complexity,Outcome and Need (ICON) in assessing orthodontic treatment need among 12-13 year-olds in southern China,we determined the threshold value of ICON based on Chinese orthodontists' judgments. The samples consisted of 335 students in grade 7 from 16 randomly selected middle schools in Chengdu,China. Three associate professors provided ICON scores for each participant and the results were compared with the gold standard judgments from 25 experts on treatment needs. Based on the gold standard,195 casts belonged to the treatment category,while the rest 140 belonged to the no-treatment category. With the international cutoff point of 43,the sensitivity and specificity of the ICON score were 0.29 and 0.98. The best compromise between sensitivity and specificity in Chengdu,compared with the gold standard,was found at a cutoff point of 29,and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.88 and 0.83. | 9 | Theoretical investigations of electrical transport properties in CoSb3 skutterudites under hydrostatic loadings显示文摘CoSb_3-based skutterudites have been a benchmark mid-temperature thermoelectric material under intensive experimental and theoretical studies for decades.Doping and filling, to the first order, alter the crystal lattice constant of CoSb3 in the context of 'chemical pressure.' In this work, we employed ab initio density functional theory in conjunction with semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory to investigate the mechanical properties and especially how hydrostatic loadings, i.e., 'physical pressure,' impact the electronic band structure, Seebeck coefficient,and power factor of pristine CoSb_3. It is found that hydrostatic pressure enlarges the band gap, suppresses the density of states(DOS) near the valence band edge, and fosters the band convergence between the valley bands and the conduction band minimum(CBM). By contrast,hydrostatic tensile reduces the band gap, increases the DOS near the valence band edge, and diminishes the valley bands near the CBM. Therefore, applying hydrostatic pressure provides an alternative avenue for achieving band convergence to improve thermoelectric properties of N-type CoSb3, which is further supported by our carrier concentration studies. | 10 | High spatial and temporal resolution synthetic aperture phase microscopy显示文摘A new optical microscopy technique,termed high spatial and temporal resolution synthetic aperture phase microscopy(HISTR-SAPM),is proposed to improve the lateral resolution of wide-field coherent imaging.Under plane wave illumination,the resolution is increased by twofold to around 260 nm,while achieving millisecond-level temporal resolution.In HISTR-SAPM,digital micromirror devices are used to actively change the sample illumination beam angle at high speed with high stability.An off-axis interferometer is used to measure the sample scattered complex fields,which are then processed to reconstruct high-resolution phase images.Using HISTR-SAPM,we are able to map the height profiles of subwavelength photonic structures and resolve the period structures that have 198 nm linewidth and 132 nm gap(i.e.,a full pitch of 330 nm).As the reconstruction averages out laser speckle noise while maintaining high temporal resolution,HISTR-SAPM further enables imaging and quantification of nanoscale dynamics of live cells,such as red blood cell membrane fluctuations and subcellular structure dynamics within nucleated cells.We envision that HISTR-SAPM will broadly benefit research in material science and biology. | Cheng Zheng Di Jin Yanping He Hongtao Lin Juejun Hu Zahid Yaqoo Peter T.C.So Renjie Zhou | 2020 | Advanced Photonics2020,2,6: | 5 |
| 11 | Evolution of the Corrosion Product Film and Its Effect on the Erosion–Corrosion Behavior of Two Commercial 90Cu–10Ni Tubes in Seawater显示文摘The composition and structural evolution of the corrosion product film of two commercial 90Cu–10Ni tubes, namely Tube A and Tube B, after being immersed in natural seawater for 1, 3, and 6 months were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and its effect on the erosion–corrosion behavior of the tubes was determined through a rotating cylinder electrode system using various electrochemical techniques. For the freshly polished samples used as contrast samples, the flow velocity mainly enhanced the cathodic reaction at low flow velocities while both the anodic and the cathodic reactions were remarkably accelerated at higher flow velocities. The corrosion product films formed on the two commercial 90Cu–10Ni tubes after being immersed in seawater for up to 6 months are of a complex three-layer or multilayer structure. The structural evolution of the films is out of sync for the two tubes. A continuous residual substrate layer depleted of Ni was observed in the inner layer of the films on Tube B after 30, 90, and 180 days' immersion, while it was observed in the film on Tube A only after 180 days' immersion. The nature of the inner layer plays a crucial role in the erosion–corrosion resistance of the 90Cu–10Ni tubes at higher flow velocity. The film with a compact and continuous inner layer of Cu_2O doped with Ni^(2+)and Ni^(3+)which bonds firmly with the substrate could survive and even get repaired with the increased flow velocity. The film on Tube B possessing a hollow and discontinuous inner layer composed of the residual substrate was degraded rapidly with increasing rotation speed in spite of its quite good resistance at the stagnant or lower speed conditions. | Okpo O. | 12 | Therapeutic potential of colchicine in cardiovascular medicine:a pharmacological review显示文摘Colchicine is an ancient herbal drug derived from Colchicum autumnale.It was first used to treat familial Mediterranean fever and gout.Based on its unique efficacy as an anti-inflammatory agent,colchicine has been used in the therapy of cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease,atherosclerosis,recurrent pericarditis,vascular restenosis,heart failure,and myocardial infarction.More recently,colchicine has also shown therapeutic efficacy in alleviating cardiovascular complications of COVID-19.COLCOT and LoDoCo2 are two milestone clinical trials that confirm the curative effect of long-term administration of colchicine in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease.There is growing interest in studying the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of colchicine.The anti-inflammatory action of colchicine is mediated mainly through inhibiting the assembly of microtubules.At the cellular level,colchicine inhibits the following:(1)endothelial cell dysfunction and inflammation;(2)smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration;(3)macrophage chemotaxis,migration,and adhesion;(4)platelet activation.At the molecular level,colchicine reduces proinflammatory cytokine release and inhibits NF-κB signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome activation.In this review,we summarize the current clinical trials with proven curative effect of colchicine in treating cardiovascular diseases.We also systematically discuss the mechanisms of colchicine action in cardiovascular therapeutics.Altogether,colchicine,a bioactive constituent from an ancient medicinal herb,exerts unique anti-inflammatory effects and prominent cardiovascular actions,and will charter a new page in cardiovascular medicine. | Fan-shun Zhang Qing-ze He Chengxue Helena Qin Peter JLittle Jian-ping Weng Suo-wen Xu | 2022 | Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2022,43,9: | 5 |
| 13 | Competition between TRAF2 and TRAF6 Regulates NF-κB Activation in Human B Lymphocytes显示文摘Objective To investigate the role of TNF receptor-associated factor 2 (TRAF-2) and TRAF6 in CD40-induced nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway and whether CD40 signaling requires TRAF2. Methods Human B cell lines were transfected with plasmids expressing wild type TRAF2 or dominant negative TRAF2,TRAF2-shRNA,or TRAF6-shRNA. The activation of NF-κB was detected by Western blot,kinase assay,transfactor enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA),and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Analysis of the role of TRAF-2 and TRAF-6 in CD40-mediated NF-κB activity was examined following stimulation with recombinant CD154. Results TRAF2 induced activity of IκB-kinases (IKKα,IKKi/ε),phosphorylation of IκBα,as well as nuclear translocation and phosphorylation of p65/RelA. In contrast,TRAF6 strongly induced NF-κB activation and nuclear translocation of p65 as well as p50 and c-Rel. Engagement of CD154-induced nuclear translocation of p65 was inhibited by a TRAF6-shRNA,but conversely was enhanced by a TRAF2-shRNA. Examination of direct interactions between CD40 and TRAFs by FRET documented that both TRAF2 and TRAF6 directly interacted with CD40. However,the two TRAFs competed for CD40 binding. Conclusions These results indicate that TRAF2 can signal in human B cells,but it is not essential for CD40-mediated NF-κB activation. | 15 | Chemical Constituents in Extracts from Leaves of Lantana trifolia and Their In Vitro Anti-oxidative Activity显示文摘Objective To isolate, purify, and analyze the anti-oxidants from the leaves of Lantanatrifolia. Methods The anti-oxidative activities of the crude extracts from liquid-liquid extraction of L. trifolia leaves were assayed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) method to assess their radical scavenging and reducing abilities. The total flavonoidsand phenol contents in the ethyl acetate fraction were determined by colorimetric and Folin–Ciocalteu methods, respectively. Chemical constituents were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction and repeatedly purified using silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, and HPLC, respectively. The chemical structures isolated were identified by spectral analysis and chemical evidence. Results Ethyl acetate partition from liquid-liquid extraction exhibited the highest anti-oxidative activity with an IC50 value of 4.94 μg/mL, close to that of the standard(vitamin C, VC, 4.23 μg/mL). The extract was proved to contain total flavonoids and phenol contents with values of(39.0 ± 1.6) and(29.27 ± 1.46) mg/g, respectively. Six compounds were isolated and identified as kaempferol-3,7-dimethyl ether(1), verbascoside(2), apigenin(3), umuhengerin(4), ladanetin(5), and scutellarein-7-O-β-D-apiofuranoside(6).Conclusion The ethyl acetate extract from the leaves of L. trifolia possesses the potent anti-oxidative and free radical scavenging activities which are directly proportional to the concentration of phenolic contents. The anti-oxidative activity of the extract from the leaves of L. trifolia is due to its proton donating ability that converts free radicals to more stable products and terminates chain reactions. Compound 1 is isolated from the plants of Lantana Linn. for the first time. Thus, plants can be considered as a sort of living-sensors for monitoring dynamic of soil water content or the stored water in plant body. Because of difficulty to identify the early wilting symptom of plants from the results in 2D (two-dimension) space, this paper presented a preliminary study with 3D (three-dimension)-based image, in which a laser scanner was used for achieving the morphological information of zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) leaves. Moreover, a leaf wilting index (DLWIF) was defined by fractal dimension. The experiment consisted of phase-1 for observing the temporal variation of DLWIF and phase-2 for the validation of this index. During the experiment, air temperature, luminous intensity, and volumetric soil water contents (VSWC) were simultaneously recorded over time. The results of both phases fitted the bisector (line: 1:1) with R2=0.903 and REMS=0.155. More significantly, the influence of VSWC with three levels (0.22, 0.30, and 0.36 cm3 cm-3) on the response of plant samples to drought stress was observed from separated traces of DLWIF.
