| 7 | Implications of Climate Change on Streamflow of a Snow-Fed River System of the Northwest Himalaya显示文摘Air temperature and snow cover variability are sensitive indicators of climate change. This study was undertaken to forecast and quantify the potential streamflow response to climate change in the Jhelum River basin. The implications of air temperature trends (+0.11°C/decade) reported for the entire north-west Himalaya for past century and the regional warming (+0.7°C/decade) trends of three observatories analyzed between last two decades were used for future projection of snow cover depletion and stream flow. The streamflow was simulated and validated for the year 2007-2008 using snowmelt runoff model (SRM) based on in-situ temperature and precipitation with remotely sensed snow cover area. The simulation was repeated using higher values of temperature and modified snow cover depletion curves according to the assumed future climate. Early snow cover depletion was observed in the basin in response to warmer climate. The results show that with the increase in air temperature, streamflow pattern of Jhelum will be severely affected. Significant redistribution of streamflow was observed in both the scenarios. Higher discharge was observed during spring-summer months due to early snowmelt contribution with water deficit during monsoon months. Discharge increased by 5% 40% during the months of March to May in 2030 and 2050. The magnitude of impact of air temperature is higher in the scenario-2 based on regional warming. | 11 | Role of angiotensin converting enzyme and angiotensinogen gene polymorphisms in angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor-mediated antiproteinuric action in type 2 diabetic nephropathy patients显示文摘AIM To investigate the role of genetic variants of angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) and angiotensinogen(AGT) genes in the antiproteinuric efficacy of ACE inhibitor therapy in diabetic nephropathy(DN) patients.METHODS In the present study, 270 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with nephropathy were enrolled and treated with ACE inhibitor(ramipril) and followed at 6 mo for renal function and albumin excretion by estimating serum creatinine, end stage renal disease, and albumin/creatinine ratio(ACR) in urine. Genotyping of ACE I/D and AGT M235 T polymorphisms were performed by using primer specific polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and PCR-RFLP techniques, respectively. RESULTS Forty-eight percent of DN patients(responders) benefited with respect to proteinuria from ACE inhibitor therapy at 6 mo follow-up. A significant reduction in ACR was observed after 6 mo treatment with ACE inhibitor irrespective of whether DN patients were micro-albuminuric(≥ 30 and < 300 mg/g creatinine) or macro-albuminuric(≥ 300 mg/g creatinine) at the time of enrollment. However, macro-albuminuric patients(55%) showed better response to therapy. A reduction in urinary ACR was found independent of genotypes of ACE I/D and AGT M235 T polymorphisms although macro-albuminuric patients having TT genotype showed statistically insignificant increased response(72%). | 12 | Resistance to Aspergillus flavus in maize and peanut:Molecular biology, breeding, environmental stress,and future perspectives显示文摘The colonization of maize(Zea mays L.) and peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) by the fungal pathogen Aspergillus flavus results in the contamination of kernels with carcinogenic mycotoxins known as aflatoxins leading to economic losses and potential health threats to humans. The regulation of aflatoxin biosynthesis in various Aspergillus spp. has been extensively studied, and has been shown to be related to oxidative stress responses. Given that environmental stresses such as drought and heat stress result in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) within host plant tissues, host-derived ROS may play an important role in cross-kingdom communication between host plants and A. flavus. Recent technological advances in plant breeding have provided the tools necessary to study and apply knowledge derived from metabolomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic studies in the context of productive breeding populations. Here, we review the current understanding of the potential roles of environmental stress, ROS, and aflatoxin in the interaction between A.flavus and its host plants, and the current status in molecular breeding and marker discovery for resistance to A. flavus colonization and aflatoxin contamination in maize and peanut. | 14 | Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in Landraces and Improved Rice Varieties from India显示文摘A set of 50 rice genotypes comprising landraces, local selections, and improved varieties were characterized using simple sequence repeat(SSR) and inter simple sequence repeat(ISSR) markers to study genetic diversity and population structure. Following unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean based clustering using binary data of polymorphic markers, the genotypes were grouped into 5 clusters and 11 sub-clusters, whereas population structure analysis separated 50 rice genotypes into 5 sub-populations. Grouping of rice genotypes showed better resemblance with the pedigree information of the genotypes. Both genetic diversity and population structure analysis separated majority of the improved varieties from landraces and local selections. Some of the SSR markers amplified unique alleles which were specific to a particular genotype and could distinguish them from the rest. | 17 | Hybridization between salt resistant and salt susceptible genotypes of mungbean(Vigna radiata L.Wilczek)and purity testing of the hybrids using SSRs markers显示文摘Six cultivated and two wild genotypes of mungbean(Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) possessing variation for phenotypic and genotypic response for salt tolerance were hybridized. Hybridization results showed successful pod set and significant variations in cross-compatibility of investigated genotypes. Genotypes PLM 380 and PLM 562 showed promising combining ability with all genotypes. Results revealed significant crossing compatibility between V. radiata and V. sublobata. The cross ability ranged from 1.99 to 5.12%(average 3.08%). Molecular analysis confirmed the hybrids purity. All F_1 seeds were bold, green/shiny green and germinated between 3 to 5 days. Hybrid plants were normal, fertile and healthier over their respective progenitors. Uniform flowering and maturity of the hybrids showed absence of any defect or alteration in plant habit and life cycle of the hybrids. The hybrid plants showed increase in yield characteristics as no. of pods, pod length, 100 seeds weight, and yield per plant. Number of pods containing F_2 seeds ranged from 5–8 per cluster. The F_2 seeds were collected and stored for further research. Present study suggests that salt resistant wild relatives or cultivars of mungbean can be explored by breeding as a source of useful traits/genes providing salt tolerance. This may help in development of best mungbean variety for saline prone areas. | 18 | Value of multi-disciplinary input into laparoscopic management of rectal cancer-An observational study显示文摘AIM To assess the impact of multi-disciplinary teams(MDTs)management in optimising the outcome for rectal cancers.METHODS We undertook a retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database of patients with rectal cancers(defined as tumours≤15 cm from anal verge)discussed at our MDT between Jan 2008 and Jan 2011.The data was validated against the national database to ensure completeness of dataset.The clinical course and follow-up data was validated using the institution’s electronic patient records.The data was analysed in terms of frequencies and percentages.Significance of any differences were analysed usingχ2 test.A Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed for overall survival and disease free survival.RESULTS Following appropriate staging,one hundred and thirtythree patients were suitable for potentially curative resections.Seventy two(54%)were upper rectal cancer(URC)-tumour was>6 cm from the anal verge and 61(46%)were lower rectal cancers(LRC)-lower extent of the tumour was palpable≤6 cm.Circumferential resection margin(CRM)appeared threatened on preoperative MRI in 19/61(31%)patients with LRC requiring neo-adjuvant therapy(NAT).Of the 133 resections,118(89%)were attempted laparoscopically(5%conversion rate).CRM was positive in 9(6.7%)patients;Median lymph node harvest was 12(2-37).Major complications occurred in 8(6%)patients.Median follow-up was 53 mo(0-82).The 90-d mortality was 2(1.5%).Over the followup period,disease related mortality was 11(8.2%)and overall mortality was 39(29.3%).Four(3%)patients had local recurrence and 22(16.5%)patients had distant metastases.CONCLUSION Management of rectal cancers can be optimized with multidisciplinary input to attain acceptable long-term oncological outcomes even when incorporating a laparoscopic approach to rectal cancer resection. | Pawan Kumar Dhruva Rao Sooriyaratchige Pradeep Manjula Peiris Seema Safia Arif Rhodri A Davies Ashraf Gergies Masoud Puthucode Narayanan Haray | 2017 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2017,9,6: | 2 |
| 19 | Multi-temporal forest cover dynamics in Kashmir Himalayan region for assessing deforestation and forest degradation in the context of REDD+ policy显示文摘The role of forests is being actively considered under the agenda of REDD+(Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation plus) aimed at reducing emissions related to changes in forest cover and forest quality. Forests in general have undergone negative changes in the past in the form of deforestation and degradation, while in some countries positive changes are reported in the form of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock. The present study in the Kashmir Himalayan forests is an effort to assess historical forest cover changes that took place from 1980 to 2009 and to predict the same for 2030 on the basis of past trend using geospatial modeling approach. Landsat data(Multispectral Scanner(MSS),Thematic Mapper(TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper(ETM+)) was used for the years 1980, 1990 and(2001, 2009) respectively and change detection analysis between the dates was performed. The maps generated were validated through ground truthing. The study area(3375.62 km^2) from 1980-2009 has uffered deforestation and forest degradation of about 126 km^2 and 139.02 km^2 respectively which can be claimed under negative options of REDD+, while as the area that experienced no change(1514 km^2) can be claimed under conservation. A small area(23.31 km^2) observed as positive change can be claimed under positive options. The projected estimates of forest cover for 2030 showed increased deforestation and forest degradation on the basis of trend analysis using Cellular Automata(CA) Markov modeling.
