LUU Quang Hung LAU Man Fai NG Sebastian P.H. 9Human African trypanosomiasis in endemic focus of Abraka,Nigeria显示文摘Objective:To investigated the prevalence of human African trypanosomiasis(HAT),a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiens in an endemic focus of Nigeria,as it relates to age,sex and occupational differences. Methods:A total of 474 human subjects were screened using card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis kit.Positive samples were further investigated for parasite positivity in blood/serum and cerebrospinal fluid(CSF).Results:Of the 474 screened,44(9.3%) were seropositive with seroprevalence of 22(9.6%) in Urhouka,14(9.5%) in Umeghe and 8(7.9%) for Ugonu. The number of seropositives, observed for weakly, moderately and strongly positives for the three communities were 4,7 and 11 in Urhouka,4,5 and 5 in Umeghe and 3,2 and 3 in Ugonu respectively.Among the 16 volunteers with detected parasite in their blood,4 of them were weakly positive,5 of them were moderately positive and 7 of them strongly positive.4 volunteers from Urhouka community were found parasites in their CSF and they were all strongly positive. The difference between the seroprevalence of males and females was not statistically significant(OR=1.14,95%CI=0.37-3.4,P>0.05).The prevalence difference between age group 21-30 years old and the youngest and oldest age groups was statistically significant(OR=3.5,95%CI= 1.08-12.57,P<0.05) but not significant for other age categories (P>0.05),It was observed that farmers had significantly higher prevalence of HAT infection as well as greater risk of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection than inhabitants with other occupations (OR=3.25,95%CI=0.99-11.79,P<0.05).Conclusions:Human activities such as farming and visits to the river have been identified as major risk factors to HAT.Also the breakdown of HAT control program has been advanced for the rise in HAT in Abraka,an endemic focus in Nigeria.Onyebiguwa Patrick Goddey Nmorsi Clement Isaac Igho Benjamin Igbinosa Duncan Ogheneocovo Umukoro Dafe Palmer Aitaikuru 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,6:0
10Predictability of well construction time with multivariate probabilistic approach显示文摘Current univariate approach to predict the probability of well construction time has limited accuracy due to the fact that it ignores key factors affecting the time.In this study,we propose a multivariate probabilistic approach to predict the risks of well construction time.It takes advantage of an extended multi-dimensional Bernacchia–Pigolotti kernel density estimation technique and combines probability distributions by means of Monte-Carlo simulations to establish a depth-dependent probabilistic model. This method is applied to predict the durations of drilling phases of 192 wells, most of which are located in the AustraliaAsia region.Despite the challenge of gappy records, our model shows an excellent statistical agreement with the observed data. Our results suggested that the total time is longer than the trouble-free time by at least 4 days, and at most 12 days within the 10%–90% confidence interval. This model allows us to derive the likelihoods of duration for each phase at a certain depth and to generate inputs for training data-driven models, facilitating evaluation and prediction of the risks of an entire drilling operation.LUU Quang-Hung LAU Man Fai NG Sebastian P.H. 11Pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies as an invaluable approach for correct identification of medicinal plants:The case of Artemisia vulgaris L.substituted for Artemisia annua L.in Western Uganda显示文摘Background:Different parts of Artemisia vulgaris L.(A.vulgaris)are ethno-medicinally used as an emmenagogue and for the treatment of ailments such as malaria fever, ulcers, and cancer. However, anecdotal evidence shows that the plant is often substituted for Artemisia annua L.(A.annua)by herbalists in Western Uganda due to similarities in their morphology.Misidentification of medicinal plants and mislabelling of herbal products have been incriminated in toxicity and adverse health outcomes in traditional medicine practise.Because safety continues to be a major issue with the use of herbal remedies,it becomes imperative therefore that medicinal plants should be correctly identified. Methods:This study focused on investigating the macroscopic, microscopic, physicochemical characteristics and phytochemical composition of A.vulgaris leaves compared to A.annua to ease its correct identification. Results:The results showed that there are some colour differences between the leaves of the two species, with a close arrangement of microscopic features but different leaf constants. The leaves of the two Artemisia species had similar tastes, but their shapes and colours(greenish-yellow for A.annua and dark green for A.vulgaris)can be used by the local community to distinguish between them. The artemisinin content was higher in A.vulgaris leaves(1.72%)than in A.annua(1.43%),but the reverse was observed for the total flavonoid content. Conclusion:This observation could justify the change in the use of A.vulgaris by the indigenous community in western Uganda.Further studies should consider the pharmacognostic comparison of A.annua with other species in the genus Artemisia and the use of molecular techniques such as DNA barcoding.Ivan Kahwa Clement Olusoji Ajayi Reenu Yadav Nagendra Singh Chauhan Kamal Shah Abdelgadir Alamin Abdelgadir Efrata Ashuro Shegena Salome Daniel Timothy Omara John Baptist Asiimwe Hilda Ikiriza Shabnoor Iqbal Casim Umba Tolo Anke Weisheit Patrick Engeu Ogwang 2023TMR Integrative Medicine2023,7,4:0
