| 1 | Lipoprotein(a) in type 2 diabetic subjects and its relationship to diabetic microvascular complications显示文摘AIM: To estimate the level of serum lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)] in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and to determine the relationship between Lp(a) in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and micro-vascular complications. METHODS: A cross sectional study was performed that enrolled 144 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus above the age of 25 years attending outpatient clinic of Government Medical College, Kozhikode. Lp(a) levels were measured quantitatively in venous samples using Turbidimetric Immunoassay in all subjects. Each patient was evaluated for micro vascular complications, namely diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. The relationship between Lp(a) levels and the micro vascular complications was assessed by univariate analysis. RESULTS: Mean age of cases was 53.93 ± 10.74 years with a male to female ratio of 1.3:1. Mean duration of diabetes was 9.53 ± 7.3 years. Abnormal Lp(a) levels (≥ 30 mg/dL) were observed in 38 (26.4%) diabetic subjects. Seventy-eight (54.16%) cases had diabetic nephropathy and significantly higher Lp(a) levels were found among these cases [Median 28.2 mg/dL (Interquartile range; IQR 24.4-33.5) vs 19.3 mg/dL (IQR 14.7-23.5); P < 0.05]. Retinopathy was present among 66 (45.13%) cases and peripheral neuropathy was detected among 54 (37.5%) cases. However, Lp(a) levels were not significantly different among those with or without retinopathy and neuropathy. Positive correlation was found between higher Lp(a) levels and duration of diabetes (r = 0.165, P < 0.05) but not with HbA1c values (r = - 0.083). CONCLUSION: Abnormal Lp(a) levels were found among 26.4% of diabetic subjects. Patients with diabetic nephropathy had higher Lp(a) levels. No association was found between Lp(a) levels and diabetic retinopathy or neuropathy. | 2 | Gastrointestinal manifestations of Henoch-Schonlein purpura: A report of two cases显示文摘Henoch-Schonlein purpura(HSP) is a small vessel vasculitis mediated by type Ⅲ hypersensitivity with deposition of Ig A immune complex in the walls of vessels. It is a multi-system disorder characterizedby palpable purpura, arthritis, glomerulonephritis and gastrointestinal manifestations and commonly occurs in children and young adults. The patients with gastrointestinal involvement usually present with colicky abdominal pain, vomiting and melena. The imaging findings include multifocal bowel thickening with mucosal hyperenhancement, presence of skip areas, mesenteric vascular engorgement, with involvement of unusual sites like stomach, duodenum and rectum. | 3 | WJSC 6^(th) Anniversary Special Issues(1):Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant for acute myeloid leukemia:Current state in 2013 and future directions显示文摘Acute myeloid leukemia(AML)represents a heterogeneous group of high-grade myeloid neoplasms of the elderly with variable outcomes.Though remissioninduction is an important first step in the management of AML,additional treatment strategies are essential to ensure long-term disease-free survival.Recent pivotal advances in understanding the genetics and molecular biology of AML have allowed for a risk-adapted approach in its management based on relapse-risk.Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation(allo-HCT)represents an effective therapeutic strategy in AML providing the possibility of cure with potent graft-versus-leukemia reactions,with a demonstrable survival advantage in younger patients with intermediate-or poor-risk cytogenetics.Herein we review the published data regarding the role of allo-HCT in adults with AML.We searched MEDLINE/PubMed and EMBASE/Ovid.In addition,we searched reference lists of relevant articles,conference proceedings and ongoing trial databases.We discuss the role of allo-HCT in AML patients stratified by cytogenetic-and molecular-risk in first complete remission,as well as allo-HCT as an option in relapsed/refractory AML.Besides the conventional sibling and unrelated donor allografts,we review the available data and recent advances for alternative donor sources such as haploidentical grafts and umbilical cord blood.We also discuss conditioning regimens,including reduced intensity conditioning which has broadened the applicability of allo-HCT.Finally we explore recent advances and future possibilities and directions of allo-HCT in AML.Practical therapeutic recommendations have been made where possible based on available data and expert opinion. | Abraham S Kanate Marcelo C Pasquini Parameswaran N Hari Mehdi Hamadani | 2014 | World Journal of Stem Cells2014，6，2： | 6 |
| 4 | Endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondrial crosstalk:a novel role for the mitochondrial peptide humanin显示文摘In this review,the interactive mechanisms of mitochondria with the endoplasmic reticulum(ER) are discussed with emphasis on the potential protective role of the mitochondria derived peptide humanin(HN) in ER stress.The ER and mitochondria are dynamic organelles capable of modifying their structure and function in response to changing environmental conditions.The ER and mitochondria join together at multiple sites and form mitochondria-ER associated membranes that participate in signal transduction pathways that are under active investigation.Our laboratory previously showed that HN protects cells from oxidative stress induced cell death and more recently,described the beneficial role of HN on ER stress-induced apoptosis in retinal pigment epithelium cells and the involvement of ER-mitochondrial cross-talk in cellular protection.The protection was achieved,in part,by the restoration of mitochondrial glutathione that was depleted by ER stress.Thus,HN may be a promising candidate for therapy for diseases that involve both oxidative and ER stress.Developing novel approaches for retinal delivery of HN,its analogues as well as small molecular weight ER stress inhibitors would prove to be a valuable approach in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. | Parameswaran G.Sreekumar David R.Hinton Ram Kannan | 2017 | Neural Regeneration Research2017，12，1： | 5 |

| 6 | Rate-dependent mechanical behavior of jointed rock with an impersistent joint under different infill conditions显示文摘Transition in the rate-dependent mechanical response of rock was investigated due to the presence of impersistent joint with different infill conditions.Four types of samples,i.e.intact,jointed with no grouting,jointed and grouted with cement,and jointed and grouted with epoxy,were fabricated using model material.A series of dynamic split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) tests was conducted on prepared samples with strain rates varying between 53-130 salong with static uniaxial compression tests(10s).Progression of fracture/failure along samples was monitored using high-speed imaging and digital image correlation(DIC).Strength was observed to be significantly lower for jointed samples as compared to intact samples.However,the increasing trend of strength with strain rates remained similar for all types of samples.Epoxy was observed to be a better grout due to greater improvement in the strength of epoxy grouted jointed samples than cement grouted samples under both static and dynamic conditions.Significant changes were observed in fracture behavior(initiation,pattern and mechanism)with strain rate for intact and jointed unfilled/grouted samples.Fracturing was dominated by shear and tensile cracks at high strain rates compared to tensile cracks at low strain rates in all samples.Unlike static loading conditions,the location of cracks initiation shifts away from joint tips with increasing strain rate and depending upon existing infill conditions(unfilled/grouted). | Sachin Kumar Gaurav Tiwari Venkitanarayanan Parameswaran Arghya Das | 2022 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2022，14，5： | 2 |
| 7 | Does black hole spin play a key role in the FSRQ/BL Lac dichotomy?显示文摘Blazars are characterized by large intensity and spectral variations across the electromagnetic spectrum It is believed that jets emerging from them are almost aligned with the line-of-sight. The majority of identified extragalactic sources in γ-ray catalogs of EGRET and Fermi are blazars. Observationally,blazars can be divided into two classes: flat spectrum radio quasars(FSRQs) and BL Lacs. BL Lacs usually exhibit lower γ-ray luminosity and harder power law spectra at γ-ray energies than FSRQs. We attempt to explain the high energy properties of FSRQs and BL Lacs from Fermi γ-ray space telescope observations. It was argued previously that the difference in accretion rates is mainly responsible for the large mismatch in observed luminosity in γ-ray. However, when intrinsic luminosities are derived by correcting for beaming effects, this difference in γ-ray luminosity between the two classes is significantly reduced. In order to explain this difference in intrinsic luminosities, we propose that spin plays an important role in the luminosity distribution dichotomy of BL Lacs and FSRQs.
