3Farmers’perceptions on cultivation and the impacts of climate change on goods and services provided by Garcinia kola in Nigeria显示文摘Background:Garcinia kola is an indigenous multipurpose tree species commonly found in the tropical rain forest zone of West and Central Africa.Providing economic, ecological, and socio-cultural benefits for people, they have potentials to improve the regional and local income generation to the farmers but the cultivation of the species is very limited in Nigeria. Methods:The study investigated cultivation and farmers’perceptions on the impacts of climate change on goods and services provided by G.kola in Nigeria.Structured questioners and interviews were used. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic such as frequency,percentage,chi-square,and multinomial logit regressions with SPSS Version 20 and R software Version 3.1.0.Results:The results show that farmers are presently not cultivating G.kola, and most of the available stands were inherited from grandparents. The farmers still believe it is only God that can make G.kola to germinate;however, information about the new improved methods of raising G.kola was not spread across farmers’communities.Over 93%of these farmers were not aware of these new methods, and the only means they raise the species is by picking the wildlings that regenerate naturally close to mother tree and are rarely found. The finding also shows that farmers are well aware of climate change and its impact on crop productivity is not clear to them. The result shows that five explanatory variables(age, gender, marital status, education level, household size and primary occupation)are the main factors significantly influencing farmers’perception of climate change and the cultivation of the G.kola.During interview section, the farmers reported variability of Harmattan season influences fruit production of the species;according to them, increase in Harmattan season usually leads to increase in fruiting of G.kola.Conclusions:Based on our findings, all the 215 respondent interviewed agree that climatic variability influences the availability of G.kola which will in turn have significant effects on the goods and services provided to the people.Efforts should be made at educating the rural farmers on propagation possibilities, potential ecosystem services, and the impact of climate change on multiple-purpose agroforestry species.Onyebuchi Patrick Agwu Adama Bakayoko Saka Oladunni Jimoh Porembski Stefan 2018Ecological Processes2018,7,1:1

16Assessing the Impact of Gas Flaring and Carbon Dioxide Emissions on Precipitation Patterns in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria Using Geospatial Analysis显示文摘This research utilizes geospatial methodologies to investigate the influence of gas flaring and carbon dioxide emissions on precipitation patterns within the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study relies on average mean precipitation data sourced from CHRS at the University of Arizona and carbon dioxide emissions data from NASA’s AIRS in Giovanni, spanning from July 2002 to November 2011.To carry out the analysis,ArcGIS 5.0 and SPSS 25,employing Inverse Distance Weighting(IDW),were employed to assess CO_(2) emissions and rainfall for both November and July during the period from 2002 to 2011.Over the course of this study,it was observed that CO_(2) emission exhibited an upward trend, increasing from 327.5226 parts per million(ppm)in July 2002 to 390.0077 ppm in November 2011.Simultaneously,the rainfall demonstrated an increase, rising from 56.66 millimeters to 390.78 millimeters for both July and November from 2002 to 2011.Noteworthy findings emerged from the correlation analysis conducted.Specifically, from July 2000 to 2011,there was a weak positive correlation(0.3858)observed between CO_(2) emissions and minimum rainfall, while a strong negative correlation(–0.7998)was identified for maximum rainfall values. In November, both minimum and maximum CO_(2) emissions displayed strong negative correlations with rainfall, with coefficients of–0.8255 and–0.7415,respectively.These findings hold significant implications for comprehending the environmental dynamics within the Niger Delta.Policymakers and stakeholders can leverage this knowledge to formulate targeted strategies aimed at mitigating CO_(2) emissions and addressing potential climate change-induced alterations in rainfall patterns.Otutu Anslem Onyebuchi Eteh Desmond Rowland Iluma Vieme Phoebe 2023Journal of Atmospheric Science Research2023,6,4:0
17The impact of COVID-19 on the birth rate in Nigeria:a report from population-based registries显示文摘Background and objectives:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a pandemic that has become a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting the physical and mental health of individuals influencing reproduction.Despite the threat,it poses to maternal health in sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria, there is little or no data on the impact it has on fertility, conception, gestation and birth. To compare the birth rate between pre-COVID and COVID times using selected months of the year.Materials and methods:This was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional analytical study data from the birth registries of three tertiary hospitals, comparing two years[2019(Pre-COVID)]versus[2020(COVID era)]using three months of the year(October to December). The data relied upon was obtained from birth registries in three busy maternity clinics all within tertiary hospitals in South-East Nigeria and we aimed at discussing the potential impacts of COVID-19 on fertility in Nigeria. The secondary outcome measures were;mode of delivery, booking status of the participants, maternal age and occupation. Results:There was a significant decrease in tertiary-hospital based birth rate by 92 births(P=0.0009;95%CI:-16.0519 to-4.1481)among mothers in all the three hospitals in 2020 during the COVID period(post lockdown months)of October to December. There was a significant difference in the mode of delivery for mothers(P=0.0096)with a 95%confidence interval of 1.0664 to 1.5916,as more gave birth through vaginal delivery during the 2020 COVID-19 period than pre-COVID-19.Conclusion:Tertiary-hospital based birth rates were reduced during the pandemic. Our multi-centre study extrapolated on possible factors that may have played a role in this decline in their birth rate, which includes but is not limited to;decreased access to hospital care due to the total lockdowns/curfews and worsening inflation and economic recession in the country.Charlotte Blanche Oguejiofor Kenechi Miracle Ebubechukwu George Uchenna Eleje Emmanuel Onyebuchi Ugwu Joseph Tochukwu Enebe Kingsley Emeka Ekwuazi Chukwuemeka Chukwubuikem Okoro Boniface Chukwuneme Okpala Charles Chukwunomunso Okafor Nnanyelugo Chima Ezeora Emeka Ifeanyi Iloghalu Chidebe Christian Anikwe Chigozie Geoffrey Okafor Polycarp Uchenna Agu Emeka Philip Igbodike Iffiyeosuo Dennis Ake Arinze Anthony Onwuegbuna Osita Samuel Umeononihu Onyedika Promise Anaedu Odigonma Zinobia Ikpeze David Chibuike Ikwuka Henry Ifeanyi Nwaolisa Ekene Agatha Emeka Jude Ogechukwu Okoye Ihechinyerem Kelechi Osuagwu Angela Ogechukwu Ugwu Toochukwu Benjamin Ejikeme Eziamaka Pauline Ezenkwele Chijioke Ogomegbunam Ezeigwe Malarchy Ekwunife Nwankwo Gerald Okanandu Udigwe Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu Grace Agbaeze Chukwuebuka Divine Nwanja Ahizechukwu Chigoziem Eke 2023Infectious Diseases Research2023,4,1:0
