| 1 | Effects of polydispersity on the micro–macro behavior of granular assemblies under different deformation paths显示文摘The micromechanical and macromechanical behavior of idealized granular assemblies, made by linearly elastic, frictionless, polydisperse spheres, are studied in a periodic, triaxial box geometry, using the discrete element method. Emphasis is put on the effect of polydispersity under purely isotropic loading and unloading, deviatoric(volume conserving), and uniaxial compression paths.We show that scaled pressure, coordination number and fraction of rattlers behave in a very similar fashion as functions of volume fraction, irrespective of the deformation path applied. Interestingly, they show a systematic dependence on the deformation mode and polydispersity via the respective jamming volume fraction. This confirms that the concept of a single jamming point has to be rephrased to a range of variable jamming points, dependent on microstructure and history of the sample, making the jamming volume fraction a state-variable.This behavior is confirmed when a simplified constitutive model involving structural anisotropy is calibrated using the purely isotropic and deviatoric simulations. The basic model parameters are found to depend on the polydispersity of the sample through the different jamming volume fractions. The predictive power of the calibrated model is checked by comparison with an independent test, namely uniaxial compression. | 12 | A study of scientific publications on the greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck 1827)显示文摘Background:The greater cane rat(GCR),reputed to be African's second largest rodent,is a precocial hystricomorph with an uncommon phenotype and life history.Scientific and socio-economic interests in the GCR have led to heightened research efforts targeted towards a better understanding of its biology and exploration of its economic and translational usefulness.Methods:Records of all online scientific publications on the GCR from Google,Google Scholar,PubMed,science.gov,Ebscohost and Worldwide science,with the exception of research theses,proceedings,unpublished projects and abstracts,were collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics.Results:A total of 146 published scholarly articles spanning about six decades were retrieved,with 98%of the GCR publications originating from African countries.Nigeria boasts the highest number of publications(58.22%)followed by Ghana(21.23%)and South Africa(5.48%)while Senegal contributed the least(0.69%).Publications were sorted into ten field categories.The field with the highest number of articles(41.78%)was animal breeding and management recording,closely followed by anatomy(37.67%).Lesser contributions were made by parasitology(5.48%),biochemistry/hematology(4.8%),pharmacology/toxicology(4.11%),pathology(2.06%),and surgery/anesthesia and physiology(1.37%apiece).The fields with fewest contributions were microbiology and developmental biology(0.69%each).Conclusion:This study chronicles the spectrum of knowledge available on the GCR,highlighting the knowledge gap that still exists in various fields in order to provide advocacy for new frontiers in research efforts on this rodent.We suggest the need for a clearly defined and well integrated national/regional policy aimed at establishing Africa's foremost micro-livestock rodent,the greater cane rat,on the world's scientific radar. | Oluwaseun Ahmed Mustapha Ebunoluwa Elizabeth Teriba Oluwaseun Samuel Ezekiel Ayokunle Matthew Olude Adebayo Koyuum Akinloye James Olukayode Olopade | 2020 | Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2020,3,1: | 0 |

| 15 | Toxicological and histopathological effects of Dennettia tripetala seed used as grain protectant,food,and medicine显示文摘The study revealed the safety of Dennettia tripetala seed on man and the environment.Adult male rats weighing 0.158-0.168 kg housed in standard cages with free access to food and water were used for the experiments.The median lethal dose(LD50)was estimated using revised up and down procedure.The LD50 for D.tripetala seed extract was 5785 mg/kg and this evoked paralysis in rats for 4 days coupled with discharge from the eyes and eventual death.The least weight gain by the animals administered 75%seed powder of D.tripetala(4338.75 mg/kg)was an index of high powder concentration,whereas the weight loss experienced by group V animals is strongly attributed to chemical assault by permethrin designated as a standard insecticide.The high values of alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and urea in the groups administered 75%permethrin powder(4338.75 mg/kg)and 75%D.tripetala seed powder is an index of liver and kidney injury and dysfunction.The presence of normal serum levels of ALT,AST,alkaline phosphatase,and creatinine;normal liver and kidney structures;and normal weight gains in the animal groups fed basal diet(control)and basal diet plus 25%D.tripetala is a strong indication that 25%D.tripetala seed powder(1446.25 mg/kg)supplementation is not toxic to the liver and kidney and therefore supports normal organ functions.The LD50 recorded strongly indicates that D.tripetala has a moderately high safety margin.Supplementation of less than 50%(2892.5 mg/kg)is recommended in the safe use of the plant material as grain protectant,food,and medicine.The botanical insecticide,D.tripetala,is safer than the conventional synthetic insecticide,permethrin,on account of the latter showing evidence of kidney damage. | Luke Chinaru Nwosu Chris Olukayode Adedire Emmanuel Oludele Ogunwolu Michael Olufemi Ashamo | 2017 | Food Quality and Safety2017,1,3: | 0 |
