| 2 | Overexpression of TLR3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To investigate the expression of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry were used to analyze the expression of TLR3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 mRNA and protein in samples from 87 esophageal cancer patients consisting of both tumor and normal tissue. RESULTS: A significant increase in TLR3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 mRNA levels was detected in ESCC samples. Tumors exhibited high TLR protein expression, (70.1%, 72.4%, 66.7% and 78.2% for TLR3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9, respectively, P < 0.05). Nevertheless, a significant percentage of tumors also exhibited TLR4 expression in mononuclear inflammatory cells (48.3%) and TLR9 expression in fibroblast-like cells (60.9%). Tumors with high TLR3 expression in tumor cells or high TLR4 expression in mononuclear inflammatory cells were significantly associated with a higher probability of lymph node metastasis and increased depth of invasion. However, tumors with high TLR9 expression in fibroblast-like cells were associated with low probabilities of invasion and metastasis. There was no significant variation between the expression of TLR3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 among different ethnic groups. CONCLUSION: TLR3, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 expression appears important to the biological pathogenesis of ESCC. | 3 | Evaluation of the adsorption potential of titanium dioxide nanoparticles for arsenic removal显示文摘The adsorption potential of titanium dioxide(TiO2) nanoparticles for removing arsenic from drinking water was evaluated.Pure and iron-doped TiO2 particles are synthesized via sol-gel method.The synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles were then immobilized on ordinary sand for adsorption studies.Adsorption isotherms were conducted on the synthesized nanoparticles as well as the sand coated with TiO2 nanoparticles under varying conditions of air and light,namely,the air-sunlight(A-SL),air-light(AL),air-dark(AD) and nitrogen-dark(ND).X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis showed that the pure and iron-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were in 100% anatase crystalline phase with crystal sizes of 108 and 65 nm,respectively.Adsorption of arsenic on the three adsorbents was non-linear that could be described by the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models.Iron doping enhanced the adsorption capacity of TiO2 nanoparticles by arresting the grain growth and making it visible light responsive resulting in a higher affnity for arsenic.Similarly,the arsenic removal by adsorption on the sand coated with TiO2 nanoparticles was the highest among the three types of sand used.In all cases,As(V) was adsorbed more compared with As(Ⅲ).The solution pH appeared to be the most important factor in controlling the amount of arsenic adsorbed. | NABI Deedar ASLAM Irfan QAZI Ishtiaq A | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,3: | 14 |
| 4 | Addition of simvastatin to carvedilol non responders: A new pharmacological therapy for treatment of portal hypertension显示文摘AIM To determine whether addition of simvastatin could be an important pharmacological rescue therapy for carvedilol non-responders. METHODS One hundred and two consecutive patients of cirrhosis of liver with significant portal hypertension were included. Hepatic venous pressure gradient(HVPG) was measured at the base line and after proper optimization of dose; chronic response was assessed at 3 mo. Carvedilol non-responders were given simvastatin 20 mg per day(increased to 40 mg per day at day 15). Carvedilol plus simvastatin was continued for 1 mo and hemodynamic response was again measured at 1 mo.RESULTS A total of 102 patients with mean age of 58.3 ± 6.6 years were included. Mean baseline HVPG was 16.75 ± 2.12 mmH g and after optimization of dose and reassessment of HVPG at 3 mo, mean reduction of HVPG from baseline was 5.5 ± 1.7 mm Hg and 2.8 ± 1.6 mm Hg among responders and non-responders respectively(P < 0.001). Addition of simvastatin to carvedilol non-responders resulted in significant response in 16 patients(42.1%) and thus overall response with carvedilol and carvedilol plus simvastatin was seen in 78 patients(80%). | 5 | Endoscopic management of pancreatic fluid collectionsrevisited显示文摘The development of pancreatic fluid collections(PFC) is one of the most common complications of acute severe pancreatitis. Most of the acute pancreatic fluid collections resolve and do not require endoscopic drainage. However, a substantial proportion of acute necrotic collections get walled off and may require drainage. Endoscopic drainage of PFC is now the preferred mode of drainage due to reduced morbidity and mortality as compared to surgical or percutaneous drainage. With the introduction of new metal stents, the efficiency of endoscopic drainage has improved and the task of direct endoscopic necrosectomy has be-come easier. The requirement of re-intervention is less with new metal stents as compared to plastic stents. However, endoscopic drainage is not free of adverse events. Severe complications including bleeding, perforation, sepsis and embolism have been described with endoscopic approach to PFC. Therefore, the endoscopic management of PFC is a multidisciplinary affair and involves interventional radiologists as well as GI surgeons to deal with unplanned adverse events and failures. | 6 | Exercise preconditioning exhibits neuroprotective effects on hippocampal CA1 neuronal damage after cerebral ischemia显示文摘Recent evidence has suggested the neuroprotective effects of physical exercise on cerebral ischemic injury. However, the role of physical exercise in cerebral ischemia-induced hippocampal damage remains controversial. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of pre-ischemia treadmill training on hippocampal CA1 neuronal damage after cerebral ischemia. Male adult rats were randomly divided into control, ischemia and exercise + ischemia groups. In the exercise + ischemia group, rats were subjected to running on a treadmill in a designated time schedule(5 days per week for 4 weeks). Then rats underwent cerebral ischemia induction th rough occlusion of common carotids followed by reperfusion. At 4 days after cerebral ischemia, rat learning and memory abilities were evaluated using passive avoidance memory test and rat hippocampal neuronal damage was detected using Nissl and TUNEL staining. Pre-ischemic exercise significantly reduced the number of TUNEL-positive cells and necrotic cell death in the hippocampal CA1 region as compared to the ischemia group. Moreover, pre-ischemic exercise significantly prevented ischemia-induced memory dysfunction. | 7 | Intravenous transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells promotes neural regeneration after traumatic brain injury显示文摘To investigate the supplement of lost nerve cells in rats with traumatic brain injury by intravenous administration of allogenic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, this study established a Wistar rat model of traumatic brain injury by weight drop impact acceleration method and administered 3 × 106 rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells via the lateral tail vein. At 14 days after cell transplantation, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells differentiated into neurons and astrocytes in injured rat cerebral cortex and rat neurological function was improved significantly. | 9 | Snowmelt runoff prediction under changing climate in the Himalayan cryosphere: A case of Gilgit River Basin显示文摘There are serious concerns of rise in temperatures over snowy and glacierized Himalayan region that may eventually affect future river flows of Indus river system. It is therefore necessary to predict snow and glacier melt runoff to manage future water resource of Upper Indus Basin(UIB). The snowmelt runoff model(SRM) coupled with MODIS remote sensing data was employed in this study to predict daily discharges of Gilgit River in the Karakoram Range. The SRM was calibrated successfully and then simulation was made over four years i.e. 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 achieving coefficient of model efficiency of 0.96, 0.86, 0.9 and 0.94 respectively. The scenarios of precipitation and mean temperature developed from regional climate model PRECIS were used in SRM model to predict future flows of Gilgit River. The increase of 3 C in mean annual temperature by the end of 21 th century may result in increase of 35-40% in Gilgit River flows. | 11 | High Risk Factors of Pancreatic Carcinoma显示文摘Over the past decades, cancer has become one of the toughest challenges for health professionals. The epidemiologists are increasingly directing their research efforts on various malignant tumor worldwide. Of note, incidence of cancers is on the rise more quickly in developed countries. Indeed, great endeavors have to be made in the control of the life-threatening disease. As we know it, pancreatic cancer(PC) is a malignant disease with the worst prognosis. While little is known about the etiology of the PC and measures to prevent the condition, so far, a number of risk factors have been identified. Genetic factors, pre-malignant lesions, predisposing diseases and exogenous factors have been found to be linked to PC. Genetic susceptibility was observed in 10% of PC cases, including inherited PC syndromes and familial PC. However, in the remaining 90%, their PC might be caused by genetic factors in combination with environmental factors. Nonetheless, the exact mechanism of the two kinds of factors, endogenous and exogenous, working together to cause PC remains poorly understood. The fact that most pancreatic neoplasms are diagnosed at an incurable stage of the disease highlights the need to identify risk factors and to understand their contribution to carcinogenesis. In the presence of vitamin E, Fe(Ⅲ/ferricyanide reduces. The in situ reduced ions are then reacted with unreduced portion of ferricyanide/Fe(Ⅲ to make soluble Prussian blue, which is monitored at absorption wavelength of 735 nm. Linear calibration graph was obtained in the concentration range of 0.1-40 μg mL-1. The relative standard deviations (n = 4) were in the range of 1.1-3.6%, with limits of detection (3 s blank) of 0.04 μg mL-1. The proposed method allowed 12 injections h-1. The method is applied to determine vitamin E in Pharmaceuticals, infant milk and blood serum samples using hexane extraction with the recoveries in the range of 93 ± 3 to 97.5 ± 4%. | 13 | Effect of stratification on current hydrodynamics over Louisiana shelf during Hurricane Katrina显示文摘Numerical experiments were conducted using the finite volume community ocean model(FVCOM) to study the impact of the initial density stratification on simulated currents over the Louisiana shelf during Hurricane Katrina. Model results for two simulation scenarios, including an initially stratified shelf and an initially non-stratified shelf, were examined. Comparison of two simulations for two-dimensional(2D) currents,the time series of current speed, and variations of cross-shore currents across different sections showed that the smallest differences between simulated currents for these two scenarios occurred over highly mixed regions within 1 radius of maximum wind(RMW) under the hurricane.For areas farther from the mixed zone, differences increased, reaching the maximum values off Terrebonne Bay. These large discrepancies correspond to significant differences between calculated vertical eddy viscosities for the two scenarios. The differences were addressed based on the contradictory behavior of turbulence in a stratified fluid, as compared to a non-stratified fluid. Incorporation of this behavior in the MellorYamada turbulent closure model established a Richardson number-based stability function that was used for estimation of the vertical eddy viscosity from the turbulent energy and macroscale. The results of this study demonstrate the necessity for inclusion of shelf stratification when circulation modeling is conducted using three-dimensional(3D) baroclinic models. | 15 | High HbA1c is associated with higher risk of ischaemic stroke in Pakistani population without diabetes显示文摘Context:The role of glycated haemoglobin(HbA1c)in the prediction of ischaemic stroke in individuals without diabetes is underestimated.Aims:We performed a study to analyse the role of HbA1c in the risk prediction of ischaemic stroke in Pakistani population without diabetes.We further studied the difference between HbA1c values of individuals with diabetes and without diabetes with stroke.Settings and design:Single centre,case–control.Materials and methods:In phase I,a total of 233 patients without diabetes with ischaemic stroke and 245 as controls were enrolled.Association of HbA1c levels,lipid profiles and blood pressure recordings with ischaemic stroke was analysed.In phase II,comparison was done between diabetics and nondiabetics with stroke.Statistical analysis:Comparison of the mean variables was performed with Student’s t-tests.Logistic regression analysis with ischaemic stroke as the dependent variable was performed for phase I.Results:In phase I,the ischaemic stroke group had significantly higher HbA1c levels(5.9±2.9%vs 5.5±1.6%)compared with controls(p<0.05).Triglyceride cholesterol,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure and HbA1c were the significant determinants of stroke(p<0.05).In phase II,mean HbA1c values were significantly higher in the diabetes group(7.6±2.1 vs 6.1±2.3)(p<0.05)but other parameters were not statistically significantly different(p>0.05).Conclusions:Higher HbA1c indicated a significantly increased risk for ischaemic stroke.An HbA1c value above 5.6%(prediabetic range)predicted future risk of stroke and efforts to maintain glucose level within the normal range(≤5.6%)in individuals with high cardiovascular risk are important. | Ali Zohair Nomani Sumaira Nabi Shahzad Ahmed Mansoor Iqbal Haris Majid Rajput Suhail Rao | 2016 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2016,1,3: | 2 |

| 17 | The electronic and magnetic properties of wurtzite Mn:CdS, Cr:CdS and Mn:Cr:CdS: first principles calculations显示文摘In this article, density functional theory(DFT) based on generalized gradient approximation(GGA)and GGACU, U is Hubbard term, is used to study the electronic properties of CdS doped with different dopants(Cr, Mn). The calculations are carried out for Mn-doped CdS, Cr-doped CdS, and co-doping of Mn/Cr in CdS simultaneously. It is found that hopping of electrons is possible with Cr:CdS and Mn:Cr:CdS while Mn:CdS does not allow the hopping of electrons. Moreover, double exchange interactions are observed in Cr:CdS and d-d superexchange interactions are observed in Mn:CdS. Now the problem becomes interesting when one magnetic ion(Cr) supporting double exchange interactions and another ion(Mn) supporting d-d super-exchange interactions are doped simultaneously in the same system(CdS). The co-doped CdS is more stable even at high Curie temperature due to p-d double exchange interactions and d-d super exchange interactions. | 18 | Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in children:problems and surgical outcome:analysis of 34 cases显示文摘Background:Endoscopic third ventriculostomy(ETV)has been established as a viable treatment option for obstructive hydrocephalus of children over 6 weeks of age.ETV in pediatric groups may be unsuccessful due to the failure of absorption of cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)or reclosure of ventriculostomy stoma or due to infection.The exact cause is still debatable.Some issues like failure to eliminate the second membrane during the procedure or formation of the new arachnoid membrane at the stoma are still not clear.This study aims to assess the surgical failure of ETV and its predisposing factors.Methods:Thirty-four pediatric patients with hydrocephalus were analyzed retrospectively.The patients’age limit was between 2.5 months and 14 years.This is a retrospective study of 34 patients in a single private hospital between June 2012 and January 2018.Patients having hydrocephalus in pediatric groups more than 6 weeks of age were included in the study.Results:The mean age of all patients was 51.25±53.90 months and the mean follow-up period was 50.47±20.84 months.Of 34 surgeries,the success rate was 79%and the failure rate was 21%.Within 2 years,the success rate was 68.42%and above 2 years’success rate was 93.33%.In this series,7 cases of ETV were re-explored and found ventriculostomy stoma closure in 3 cases,the presence of the second membrane in re-exploration 2 cases,and presence of inflammatory arachnoid membrane in re-exploration 2 cases.The use of dexamethasone around the stoma in inflammatory stoma was useful,having no recurrence.In one patient of the second membrane probably due to absorption failure in communicating hydrocephalus re-exploration was failed and was managed successfully with VP shunt.Conclusions:Predisposing factors causing ETV failure are ventriculostomy stoma closure by new arachnoid granulation tissues,remnants of the second membrane inside the stoma,CSF absorption failure,infection/high protein in CSF and inappropriate patient selection. | Md Moshiur Rahman S.I.M.Khairun Nabi Khan Robert Ahmed Khan Rokibul Islam Mainul Haque Sarker | 2021 | Chinese Neurosurgical Journal2021,7,2: | 2 |
| 19 | 口服凝胶剂治疗犊牦牛腹泻的临床疗效观察和血清生化指标变化显示文摘随机选取6~35日龄自然状态下腹泻犊牦牛和正常犊牦牛各12头,对12例腹泻牛进行3d治疗并观察疗效;采集腹泻犊牛治疗前、后及8头正常犊牛血清,同时对剩余4头正常犊每天饲喂该药剂并采集血清分析。结果显示口服凝胶剂对犊牦牛临床腹泻的治愈率为75%(9/12),总有效率达到91.67%(11/12)。血清生化结果显示,各组间Mg2+和CRE差异均不显著(P〉0.05);血清CRP在腹泻犊牛中显著高于正常组(P〈0.05)。腹泻治疗前组血清中Ca^2+、Cl^-、Na^+、血清P、TP、ALB、ALP、ALT和AST均显著低于正常对照组(P〈0.05);治疗后组血清中Ca^2+、ALB、ALT、AST较治疗前组显著升高(P〈0.05),且血清Ca^2+、ALB与正常对照组无显著差异(P〉0.05)。正常犊牛饲喂药剂前后血清中AST、ALP、ALT活性物无显著差异(P〉0.05)。结果表明,口服凝胶剂对治疗犊牦牛腹泻有效,对正常犊牦牛无不良影响;正常犊牦牛与腹泻犊牛血清生化存在差异。 | 汪小强 姜文腾 韩照清 Fazul Nabi 索朗斯珠 吴庆侠 赵晓东 索伦 李家奎 | 2015 | 中国兽医学报2015,35,10: | 2 |
| 20 | Etiology, Pathology, Management and Prognosis of Chronic Pancreatitis in Chinese Population: A Retrospective Study显示文摘The purpose of this study was to investigate the etiology, pathological characteristics, management and prognosis of chronic pancreatitis in the Chinese population. The clinical data of 142 patients with chronic pancreatitis were retrospectively studied. All patients were of Chinese nationality and hospitalized from January 2008 to December 2011. Their ages ranged from 14 to 76 years, with a mean of 43 years. Of 142 patients, there were 72 cases of obstructive chronic pancreatitis(50.70%), 19 cases of alcoholic chronic pancreatitis(13.38%), 14 cases of autoimmune pancreatitis(9.86%) and 37 cases of undetermined etiology(26.06%). Pathologically, the average inflammatory mass diameter was 3.8±3.3 cm, biliary obstruction occurred in 36 cases, gall stones in 70 cases, calcification in 88 cases, ductal dilatation in 61 cases, side branch dilatation in 32 cases, ductal irregularity in 10 cases, lymphocytic inflammation in 23 cases, obliterative phlebitis in 14 cases, extra pancreatic lesion in 19 cases and fibrosis in 142 cases. Location of pancreatic lesion in the region of head(n=97), neck(n=16), body(n=12), tail(n=15) and whole pancreas(n=2) influenced the choice of surgical procedures. Ninety-four patients(66.20%) received surgical treatment and 33.80% received other treatments. After operation, 80.85% of 94 patients experienced decreased pain, and 8.51% of 94 showed recovery of endocrine function but with a complication rate of 12.77%. All the operations were performed successfully. According to the pain scale of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer(QLQ-C30) a decrease from 76±22 to 14±18 was observed.
