| 1 | Review of magnesium-based biomaterials and their applications显示文摘In biomedical applications,the conventionally used metallic materials,including stainless steel,Co-based alloys and Ti alloys,often times exhibit unsatisfactory results such as stress shielding and metal ion releases.Secondary surgical operation(s)usually become inevitable to prevent long term exposure of body with the toxic implant contents.The metallic biomaterials are being revolutionized with the development of biodegradable materials including several metals,alloys,and metallic glasses.As such,the nature of metallic biomaterials are transformed from the bioinert to bioactive and multi-biofunctional(anti-bacterial,anti-proliferation,anti-cancer,etc.).Magnesium-based biomaterials are candidates to be used as new generation biodegradable metals.Magnesium(Mg)can dissolve in body fluid that means the implanted Mg can degrade during healing process,and if the degradation is controlled it would leave no debris after the completion of healing.Hence,the need for secondary surgical operation(s)for the implant removal could be eliminated.Besides its biocompatibility,the inherent mechanical properties of Mg are very similar to those of human bone.Researchers have been working on synthesis and characterization of Mg-based biomaterials with a variety of composition in order to control the degradation rate of Mg since uncontrolled degradation could result in loss of mechanical integrity,metal contamination in the body and intolerable hydrogen evolution by tissue.It was observed that the applied methods of synthesis and the choice of components affect the characteristics and performance of the Mg-based biomaterials.Researchers have synthesized many Mg-based materials through several synthesis routes and investigated their mechanical properties,biocompatibility and degradation behavior through in vitro,in vivo and in silico studies.This paper is a comprehensive review that compiles,analyses and critically discusses the recent literature on the important aspects of Mg-based biomaterials. | Nurettin Sezer Zafer Evis Said Murat Kayhan Aydin Tahmasebifar Muammer Koça | 2018 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2018,6,1: | 38 |

| 3 | Assessment of the correlation between serum prolidase and alpha-fetoprotein levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To determine the predictive value of increased prolidase activity that reflects increased collagen turnover in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with HCC(mean age of 69.1 ± 10.1), 31 cirrhosis patients(mean age of59.3 ± 6.3) and 33 healthy volunteers(mean age of51.4 ± 12.6) were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the association of serum α-fetoprotein(AFP) values with HCC clinicopathological features, such as tumor size,number and presence of vascular and macrovascular invasion. The patients with HCC were divided into groups according to tumor size, number and presence of vascular invasion(diameters; ≤ 3 cm, 3-5 cmand ≥ 5 cm, number; 1, 2 and ≥ 3, macrovascular invasion; yes/no). Barcelona-clinic liver cancer(BCLC)criteria were used to stage HCC patients. Serum samples for measurement of prolidase and alphafetoprotein levels were kept at-80 ℃ until use.Prolidase levels were measured spectrophotometrically and AFP concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescence immunometric commercial diagnostic assay.RESULTS: In patients with HCC, prolidase and AFP values were evaluated according to tumor size, number,presence of macrovascular invasion and BCLC staging classification. Prolidase values were significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with controls(P <0.001). Prolidase levels were significantly associated with tumor size and number(P < 0.001, P = 0.002,respectively). Prolidase levels also differed in patients in terms of BCLC staging classification(P < 0.001).Furthermore the prolidase levels in HCC patients showed a significant difference compared with patients with cirrhosis(P < 0.001). In HCC patients grouped according to tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, AFP values differed separately(P = 0.032,P = 0.038, P = 0.015, respectively). | 5 | Artificial neural network models predicting the leaf area index:a case study in pure even-aged Crimean pine forests from Turkey显示文摘Background: Leaf Area Index(LAI) is an important parameter used in monitoring and modeling of forest ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate performance of the artificial neural network(ANN) models to predict the LAI by comparing the regression analysis models as the classical method in these pure and even-aged Crimean pine forest stands.Methods: One hundred eight temporary sample plots were collected from Crimean pine forest stands to estimate stand parameters. Each sample plot was imaged with hemispherical photographs to detect the LAI. The partial correlation analysis was used to assess the relationships between the stand LAI values and stand parameters, and the multivariate linear regression analysis was used to predict the LAI from stand parameters. Different artificial neural network models comprising different number of neuron and transfer functions were trained and used to predict the LAI of forest stands.Results: The correlation coefficients between LAI and stand parameters(stand number of trees, basal area, the quadratic mean diameter, stand density and stand age) were significant at the level of 0.01. The stand age, number of trees, site index, and basal area were independent parameters in the most successful regression model predicted LAI values using stand parameters(/?;adj = 0.5431). As corresponding method to predict the interactions between the stand LAI values and stand parameters, the neural network architecture based on the RBF 4-19-1 with Gaussian activation function in hidden layer and the identity activation function in output layer performed better in predicting LAI(SSE(12.1040), MSE(0.1223), RM5 E(0.3497), AIC(0.1040), BIC(-777310) and R2(0.6392)) compared to the other studied techniques.Conclusion: The ANN outperformed the multivariate regression techniques in predicting LAI from stand parameters. The effects of the type of organic acid, acid concentration, leaching time, and leaching temperature on the lateritic nickel ore were examined. Organic acids were used individually prior to sequential leaching. Citric acid was more effective than the other two acids for the selective leaching of nickel and cobalt. An increase in the citric acid concentration negligibly affected the dissolution of the metals, whereas temperature exhibited a strong beneficial effect. Oxalic acid was determined to be the most appropriate organic acid for the second leaching step. After 8 h(4 h + 4 h) of leaching with organic acids(0.5 M citric + 0.5 M oxalic) in sequence at 90°C, 89.63% Ni, 82.89% Co, and 69.63% Fe were leached from the lateritic nickel ore.
