The effects of coal blending on the formation and properties of particulate matter during combustion显示文摘The control of particulate matter (PM) emissions from coal combustion becomes an urgent work due to their adverse effects on human health. Coal blending is a promising option for submicron particulate (PM1) reduction. This study addressed the effects of coal blending on the formation and properties of particulate matter in combustion process. Coal blends from lignite and bituminous coal, with different blend ratios (9:1,7:3,5:5,3:7 and 1:9),were combusted in a drop tube furnace. The mass size distribution, concentration, elemental composition and morphology of the particulate matter generated under O2/N2 and O2/CO2 conditions were characterized. Particulate matter was collected by a low pressure impactor (LPI),which aerodynamically segregated particulates into thirteen fractions with sizes ranging from 0.03 to 9.8 μm. The results showed that coal blending reduced PM1 generation, compared with the calculated average values from the combustion of constituent coals. This indicated that the mineral interactions had a great effect on PM1 reduction. The blend ratio also played an important role in the suppression of PM1 genera-tion. In this experimental study,PM1 generation suffered a maximum suppression at the blend ratio of 7:3. The O2/CO2 atmos-phere affected the formation and properties of the PM1 during coal blends combustion. Compared with the O2/N2 combustion, the interaction of minerals was weakened under O2/CO2 combustion, thus the suppression of PM1 generation decreased after coal blending. Compared with the calculated values, the concentrations and percentages of Ca,Fe in PM1 decreased, but the concentra-tions of Ca,Fe,Si and Al in coarse particulates (PM10+) increased after coal blends combustion. The interactions between the aluminosilicates in the bituminous coal and volatile elements Ca,Fe in the lignite were thought to contribute to the suppression of PM1 generation during the combustion of coal blends.ZHOU Ke XU MingHou YU DunXi WEN Chang ZHAN ZhongHua YAO Hong 2010Chinese Science Bulletin2010,55,30:7
Characteristics and composition of particulate matter from coal-fired power plants显示文摘Measurements of the characteristics of particulate matter(PM)were performed at the inlet and outlet of the electrostatic precipitators(ESP)of four boilers in two full-scale pulverized coal power plants.PM was collected with a 13-stages low-pressure-impactor(LPI)having aerodynamic cut-off diameter ranging from 10.0 to 0.03μm for a size-segregated collection. The properties of PM including its con-centration,mass size distribution, emission characteristics, percent penetration of PM through ESP and elemental composition were investigated. The experimental results indicate that,in all the cases the mass size distribution of PM10 had typical bimodal.PM1 contained up to 1.15wt% of the total particle(TP)generated in the boilers.PM2.5 contained about 2wt%―7wt% of the TP and PM10 contained about 4wt%―19wt% of the TP.When additive limestone used for desulphurization as sorbent besides PM generated from coal combustion, there was new PM generated from limestone.Penetration as a func-tion of particle diameter had a clear peak in particle size ranging from 0.2 to 0.6μm.Particles in the submicrometer size range were much more difficult to be collected with ESP than larger particles.Dis-tributions of individual elements within PM10 were different.LIU XiaoWei XU MingHou YAO Hong YU DunXi ZHANG ZhongHua LüDangZhen 2009Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,6:7
Thermal performances of non-equidistant helical-coil phase change accumulator for latent heat storage显示文摘Helical-coil is a common structure of heat exchanger unit in phase change heat accumulator and usually has the equal coil pitch between adjacent coils. Its thermal performances Thus, could be improved by improving the uniformity was of unit the phase change material(PCM)temperature distribution.flow a novel non-equidistant helical-coil made structure heat proposed area in this study. Its coil pitch match decreased along the direction of heat transfer fluid, which the exchange in that volume increase to the decreasing temperature difference between was the heat transfer and fluid and PCM.The structure was optimized using numerical simulation.helical-coil temperature An heat experimental accumulator system was developed the experiment results indicated latent the proposed non-equidistant uniformity more effective than equidistant helical-coil for heat storage. The of the distribution was also confirmed by simulation results.ZHANG GaoWei HU Peng LIU MingHou 2017Science China(Technological Sciences)2017,60,5:5
Effective identification of the three particle modes generated during pulverized coal combustion显示文摘Based on the mass fraction size distribution of aluminum (Al),an improved method for effectively identifying the modes of particulate matter from pulverized coal combustion is proposed in this study. It is found that the particle size distributions of coal-derived particulate matter actually have three modes, rather than just mere two.The ultrafine mode is mainly generated through the vaporization and condensation processes. The coarse mode is primarily formed by the coalescence of molten minerals, while the newly-found central mode is attributed to the heterogeneous condensation or adsorption of vaporized species on fine residual ash particles. The detailed investigation of the mass fraction size distribution of sulfur(S) further demonstrates the rationality and effectiveness of the mass fraction size distribution of the Al in identifying three particle modes. The results show that not only can the number of particle modes be identified in the mass fraction size distributions of the Al but also can their size boundaries be more accurately defined. This method provides new insights in elucidating particle formation mechanisms and their physico-chemical characteristics.YU DunXi XU MingHou YAO Hong LIU XiaoWei ZHOU Ke 2008Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,10:5
Size distributions of major elements in residual ash particles from coal combustion显示文摘Combustion experiments for three coals of different ranks were conducted in an electrically-heated drop tube furnace. The size distributions of major elements in the residual ash particles (>0.4μm) such as Al, Si, S, P, Na, Mg, K, Ca and Fe were investigated. The experimental results showed that the con-centrations of Al and Si in the residual ash particles decreased with decreasing particle size, while the concentrations of S and P increased with decreasing particle size. No consistent size distributions were obtained for Na, Mg, K, Ca and Fe. The established deposition model accounting for trace element dis-tributions was demonstrated to be applicable to some major elements as well. The modeling results indicated that the size distributions of the refractory elements, Al and Si, were mainly influenced by the deposition of vaporized elements on particle surfaces. A dominant fraction of S and P vaporized during coal combustion. Their size distributions were determined by surface condensation, reaction or adsorption. The partitioning mechanisms of Na, Mg, K, Ca and Fe were more complex.YU DunXi XU MingHou YAO Hong LIU XiaoWei 2009Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,6:4
Continuum-based slip model and its validity for micro-channel flows显示文摘In this paper, the low Mach number he- lium and nitrogen flows in micro-channels are inves- tigated numerically with variations of inlet to outlet pressure ratios, aspect ratios, out pressures and fluid mediums by using different continuum-based slip models. Theoretical solutions based on perturbation expansions of the Navier-Stokes equations have been developed under different order slip conditions. The validity of slip models has been examined by the corresponding experiments and the DSMC method at different Knudsen numbers. Simulations have shown good predictions of the compressibility, rarefaction and thermal creep effects on micro-channel flows with the present slip models. The higher order slip models relatively decrease the rarefaction effects comparing with a first-order slip model. Both of the Knudsen number and the Reynolds number have been identified as key parameters, which govern the rarefaction effects and thermal creep effects, respec- tively. The present slip models have been also dem- onstrated to be appropriate for micro-channel nitro- gen flows with the Knudsen number less than 0.15, and the higher order slip conditions improve the Na- vier-Stokes predictions in the slip flow regime with Kn<0.08. However, the continuum-based slip models significantly under-predict the rarefaction effects in the transitional flow regime as the Knudsen number exceeds 0.2.ZHANG Genxuan LIU Minghou ZHANG Xianfeng YE Taohong CHEN Yiliang WANG Lu 2006Chinese Science Bulletin2006,51,9:3
Compositional and structural study of ash deposits spatially distributed in superheaters of a large biomass-fired CFB boiler显示文摘Recognizing the nature and formation progress of the ash deposits is essential to resolve the deposition problem hindering the wide application of large-scale biomass-fired boilers. Therefore, the ash deposits in the superheaters of a 220 t/h biomass-fired CFB boiler were studied, including the platen(PS),the high-temperature(HTS),the upper and the lower low-temperature superheaters(LTS).The results showed that the deposits in the PSs and HTSs were thin(several millimeters)and compact, consisting of a yellow outer layer and snow-white inner layer near the tube surface. The deposits in the upper LTS appeared to be toughly sintered ceramic, while those in the lower LTS were composed of dispersive coarse ash particles with an unsintered surface.Detailed characterization of the cross-section and the initial layers in the deposits revealed that the dominating compositions in both the PSs and the HTSs were Cl and K(approximately 70%)in the form of KCl.Interestingly, the cross-section of the deposition in the upper LTS exhibited a unique lamellar structure with a major composition of Ca and S.The contents of Ca and Si increased from approximately 10%to approximately 60%in the deposits from the high temperature surfaces to the low temperature ones.It was concluded that the vaporized mineral matter such as KCl played the most important role in the deposition progress in the PS and the HTS.In addition, although the condensation of KCl in the LTSs also happened, the deposition of ash particles played a more important role.Yishu XU Xiaowei LIU Jiuxin QI Tianpeng ZHANG Minghou XU Fangfang FEI Dingqing LI 2021Frontiers in Energy2021,15,2:3

Optimizing progress variable definition in flamelet-based dimension reduction in combustion显示文摘An automated method to optimize the definition of the progress variables in the flamelet-based dimension reduction is proposed. The performance of these optimized progress variables in coupling the flamelets and flow solver is presented. In the proposed method, the progress variables are defined according to the first two principal components(PCs) from the principal component analysis(PCA) or kernel-density-weighted PCA(KEDPCA) of a set of flamelets. These flamelets can then be mapped to these new progress variables instead of the mixture fraction/conventional progress variables. Thus,a new chemistry look-up table is constructed.A priori validation of these optimized progress variables and the new chemistry table is implemented in a CH4/N2/air lift-off flame. The reconstruction of the lift-off flame shows that the optimized progress variables perform better than the conventional ones, especially in the high temperature area. The coefficient determinations(R2 statistics) show that the KEDPCA performs slightly better than the PCA except for some minor species. The main advantage of the KEDPCA is that it is less sensitive to the database.Meanwhile, the criteria for the optimization are proposed and discussed. The constraint that the progress variables should monotonically evolve from fresh gas to burnt gas is analyzed in detail.Jing CHEN Minghou LIU Yiliang CHEN 2015Applied Mathematics and Mechanics(English Edition)2015,36,11:2
