| 1 | Preliminary investigation on the antibacterial activity of mango(Mangifera indica L:Anacardiaceae) seed kernel显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract of mango(Mangifera indica L) seed kernel.Methods:Chokanan mango seed kernel and seed kernels from assorted mango varieties were collected,cleaned,dried and powered.Crude methanolic extracts of mango seed kernel were analyzed for the phytochemical constituents.The free radical scavenging activity was determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) assay.Antibacterial activity was evaluated by disc diffusion assay with three medically important bacterial pathogens such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)(MRSA),Escherichia coli(E.coli) and Vibrio vulnificus(V.vulnificus).Results:Qualitative phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of important phytochemical compounds such as glycosides,saponins,flavanoids, tannins and alkaloids.There was no significant difference in the phytochemical content between the single and assorted mango seed kernels.However,the free radical scavenging study indicated that the assorted mango kernels showed slighdy higher activity than the single species(P<0.05). The crude methanolic extract of mango seed kernel at a concentration of 100 mg/mL is found to have potential antimicrobial activity against MRSA and E.coli compared to V.vulnificus. | 2 | Chemical composition and larvicidal activity of leaf essential oil from Clausena anisata (Willd.) Hook.f.ex Benth (Rutaceae) against three mosquito species显示文摘Objective:To determine the mosquito larvicidal activity of leaf essential oil and their chemical constituents from Clausena anisata(C.anisata)(Willd.) Hook.f.ex Benth.against Culex quinquefasciatus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles Stephensi.Methods:Essential oil was obtained by hydro-distillation and the chemical composition of the leaf essential oil was analyzed using gas chromatography—mass spectrometry.The mosquitoes were reared in the vector control laboratory and twenty lateⅢinstar larvae of three mosquito species were exposed to based on the wide range and narrow range tests,essential oil was tested at 50.100.150,200 and 250 ppm and each compound was tested at various concentration(5-75 ppm) and were assayed in the laboratory by using the protocol of WHO 2005:the 24 h LC50 values of the C.anisata leaf essential oil and their major compounds were determined following Probit analysis.Results:The oil contained were mainlyβ-pinene(32.8%),sabinene(28.3%),germacrene-D(12.7%),estragole (6.4%) and linalool(5.9%).The essential oil from the leaves of C.anisata exhibited significant larvicidal activity,with 24 h LC50 values of 140.96,130.19 and 119.59 ppm.respectively.The five pure constituents extracted from the C.anisata leaf essential oil were also tested individually against three mosquito larvae.The LC50 values ofβ-pinene,sabinene,germacrene-D,estragole and linalool appeared to be most effective against Anopheles stephensi(LC50-23.17,19.67,16.95. 11.01,35.17 ppm) followed by Aedes aegypti(LC50-27.69,21.20,18.76,12.70,38.64 ppm) and Culex quinquefasciatus(LC50-32.23,25.01.21.28,14.01,42.28).Conclusions:The essential oil of C. anisata contains five major compounds and has remarkable larvicidal properties,which may be considered as a potent source for the production of natural larvicides. | Marimuthu Govindarajan | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,11: | 9 |
| 3 | The effect of extracts of Selaginella involvens and Selaginella inaequalifolia leaves on poultry pathogens显示文摘Objective:To investigate the antimicrobial activity of some commonly available herbs against poultry pathogens such as Escherichia coli(E.coli) and Pseudomonas species isolated from poultry litter.Methods:The extracts of Selaginella involvens and Selaginella inaequalifolia were tested against E.coli and Pseudomonas isolated from poultry litter by the agar diffusion method.Results:Results indicated that different plant extracts showed inhibitory effects against E.coli(8-13 mm ) and Pseudomonas(6.5-13 mm).The four different extracts of Selaginella involvens and Selaginella inaequalifolia showed similar levels of antimicrobial activity on E.coli. | 4 | Larvicidal and repellent activities of Sida acuta Burm.F.(Family:Malvaceae) against three important vector mosquitoes显示文摘Objective:To determine the larvicidal and repellent activities of Sida acuta Burm.F.(Family: Malvaceae)extract against Culex quinquefasciatus,Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi. Methods:Twenty five late III instar larve of three mosquito species were exposed to various concentrations(15-90 mg/L) and were assayed in the laboratory by using the protocol of WHO 2005:the 24 h LC50 values of the Sida acuta leaf extract was determined following Probit analysis. The repellent efficacy was determined against three mosquito species at three concentrations viz.,1.0,2.5 and 5.0 mg/cm2 under the laboratory conditions.Results:Results showed varying degree of larvicidal activity of crude extract of Sida acuta against three important mosquitoes with LC50 values ranging between 38 to 48 mg/L.The crude extract had strong repellent action against three species of mosquitoes as it provided 100%protection against Anopheles stephensi for 180 min followed by Aedes aegypti(150 min) and Culex quinquefasciatus(120 min).Conclusions: From the results it can be concluded the crude extract of Sida acuta was an excellent potential for controlling Culex quinquefasciatus,Aedes aegypti and Anopleles stephensi mosquitoes. | Marimuthu Govindarajan | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,9: | 7 |
| 5 | Antibacterial activity of selected ethnomedicinal plants from South India显示文摘Objective:To screen the antimicrobial potential of three ethnomedicinal plants Chassalia curviflora Thw.(C.curviflora),Cyclea peltata Hook.F.& Thomson(C.peltata) and Euphorbia hirta L(E.hirta) used in folk medicines in Aarukani hills Kani tribe,Tamil Nadu,India against human bacterial pathogens.Methods:Antibacterial efficacy was performed by disc diffusion method against the pathogens viz.,Escherichia coli(E.coli)(ATCC 35218),Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus)(ATCC 6538),Salmonella typhi(S.typhi)(MTCC 733),Proteus vulgaris(P.vulgaris), Proteus mirabilis(P.mirabilis) and Streptococcus pyogenes(S.pyogenes) and incubated for 24 h at 37°C.Results:The maximum degree of antibacterial activity was observed in C.peltata followed by C.curviflora.While E.hirta showed comparatively low degree of antibacterial activity.The methanolic extract of C.peltata showed the antibacterial activity against three pathogens viz.,S.pyogenes,P.vulgaris and E.coli with the inhibition zones 12 mm,10 mm and 9 mm,respectively,hexane extracts of C.peltata also showed the antibacterial activity against two selected pathogens viz.,P.vulgaris and P.mirabilis with 15 mm and 12 mm of inhibition zones.All the three different concentrations(025,0.50 & 0.75 mg/mL) of methanolic extract of C. peltata show the inhibitory effect on the three susceptible bacteria S.pyogenes,P.vulgaris and E. coli with the maximum inhibition in the highest concentration(0.75 mg/mL).The methanolic and hexane extracts of C.curviflora exhibited the antibacterial activity against only one bacterium each i.e.P.vulgaris and S.typhi with the maximum zone of inhibition 13 and 11 mm respectively. The methanolic and hexane extracts of E.hirta exhibited the antibacterial activity against only one bacterium Le.S.pyogenes with the maximum zone of inhibition 13 and 11 mm respectively. | 6 | Evaluation of Andrographis paniculata Burm.f.(Family.Acanthaceae) extracts against Culex quinquefasciatus(Say.) and Aedes aegypti(Linn.)(Diptera:Culicidae)显示文摘Objective:To investigate the larvicidal and ovicidal efficacy of different extracts of Andrographis paniculata(A.paniculata) against Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx.quinquefasciatus) Say and Aedes aegypti(Ae.aegypti ) L(Diptera:Culicidae).Methods:Larvicidal efficacy of the crude leaf extracts of A.paniculata with five different solvents like benzene,hexane,ethyl acetate, methanol and chloroform was tested against the early third instar larvae of Cx.quinquefasciatus and Ae.aegypti.The ovicidal activity was determined against two mosquito species to various concentrations ranging from 50-300 ppm under the laboratory conditions.Results:The benzene, hexane,ethyl acetate,methanol and chloroform leaf extract of A.paniculata was found to be more effective against Cx.quinquefasciatus than Ae.aegypti.The LC50 values were 112.19,137.48, 118.67,102.05,91.20 ppm and 119.58,146.34,124.24,110.12,99.54 ppm respectively.Among five tested solvent,methanol and ethyl acetate crude extract was found to be most effective for ovicidal activity against two mosquito species.The extract of methanol and ethyl acetate exerted 100%mortality at 200 ppm against Cx.quinquefasciatus and at 250 ppm against Ae.aegypti. | 7 | A comparative study on the antioxidant activity of methanolic leaf extracts of Ficus religiosa L,Chromolaena odorata(L.) King & Rabinson,Cynodon dactylon(L.) Pers.and Tridax procumbens L.显示文摘Objective:To compare the antioxidative effects of the methanolic leaf extracts of Ficus religiosa (F.religiosa),Chromolaena odorata(C.odorata),Cynodon dactylon(C.dactylon) and Trida,x procumbens(T.procumbens) as well as the contents of antioxidants in the extracts.Methods: Total phenol and total flavanoid contents were measured according to the standard procedures. The total antioxidant capacity was determined using the phosphomolybdenum method.Reducing power was determined by the potassium ferrieyanide reducing method.The free radical scavenging activity was measured by 2,2’-Diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) assay.Results: Quantitative phytochemical analysis of total phenol content showed that C.odorata had the highest content of phenolic compounds significantly followed by F.religiosa,T.procumbens and C.dactylon.As for the total flavanoids content,F.religiosa had the highest content,followed by C.odorata,T.procumbens and C.daxtylon.Study on the total antioxidant capacity revealed that F.religiosa,C.dactylon and C.odorata showed higher total antioxidant capacity.T.procumbens showed the lowest capacity.Meanwhile,T.procumbens and C.odorata have the highest reducing power activity followed by F.religiosa and C.dactylon.The results of DPPH radical scavenging activity indicated that T.procumbens induced the largest elevation as the concentration of its extract increased,followed by C.odorata and F.religiosa and C.dactylon.Conclusions:The present study demonstrates the antioxidative capacity of all the four plant species.Of all the plants,C.odorata,a perennial weed plant showed potentially a high antioxidant activity,with higher phenolic and flavonoids contents.The data suggest that C.odorata can be best utilized in developing bioantioxidants. | Melinda Krishanti P Xavier Rathinam Marimuthu Kasi Diwakar Ayyalu Ramanathan Surash Kathiresan Sadasivam Sreeramanan Subramaniam | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,5: | 6 |

Spring显示文摘Objective:To screen the anti-cancer spike-mosses for the presence of various bioactivities and to identify the important bioactive chemicals present in Selaginella inaequalifolia(S. inaequalifolia)(Hook.& Grev.) Spring.Methods:Preliminary phytochemical screening was done by following the method of Brindha et al.Antimicrobial study was carried out by disc diffusion method.Results:Results of preliminary phytochemical screening on five different extracts(petroleum ether,benzene,chloroform,ethanol and distilled water) of the spike-moss S.inaequalifolia show the presence steroids,triterpenes,phenolic group,tannin,sugars and catechin.Alkaloids,amino acids,anthraquinone and reducing sugar did not show any positive result.Among the five different extracts,ethanol and chloroform extracts show the presence of maximum number(4 each) of compounds.The results on antimicrobial studies show that all the three microbes[Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus),Escherichia coli(E.coli) and Candida albicans (C.albicans)]tested are resistant to the ethanol extract and susceptible to petroleum ether extract.The petroleum ether extract shows maximum inhibition with 45 mm of inhibition zone in C.albicans.The inhibition zone in S.aureus and E.coli are 26 mm and 22 mm respectively. | 12 | Isolation and identification of Salmonella from curry samples and its sensitivity to commercial antibiotics and aqueous extracts of Camelia sinensis(L.) and Trachyspermum ammi(L.)显示文摘Objective:To isolate Salmonella from curry samples and to evaluate the drug sensitivity of the food-borne Salmonella and its susceptibility to specific plant extracts.Methods:Salmonella was isolated from the curry samples by standard microbiological methods and was confirmed by biochemical tests.The antibiotic susceptibility test was conducted by disc diffusion method using commercially available antibiotics such as ampicillin,tetracycline,chloramphenicol,kanamycin,and penicillin.In addition,the susceptibility of the food-borne Salmonella was also evaluated against the aqueous extracts of Camelia sinensis(L.) Theaceae(tea leaves) and the Trachyspermum ammi(L.) | 13 | Health related functional characteristics and antioxidant potential of mucilage(dietary fiber)from Zizyphus mauritiana fruits显示文摘The composition of Zizyphus mauritiana mucilage(ZMM)and several properties related to its nutritional quality were investigated.The ZMM with good water holding capacity(25.21 g/g),swelling capacity(19.34 mL/g),glucose dialysis retardation index and in vitro amylolysis kinetics indicate that it may have the capability in controlling the diabetes.Structural characteristics of ZMM were analyzed using the Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy.In addition,the ZMM has the strong antioxidant potency against ABTS(16,587.32 mmol trolox equiv./g),DPPH(5.27 g mucilage/g DPPH),hydroxyl(76.13%)and superoxide(85.12%)radicals due to the presence of polyphenols(25.54 mg GAE/g mucilage).Besides,the ZMM also inhibited the acetylcholine esterase(86.89%),tyrosinase(47.01%),α-amylase(70.13%)andα-glucosidase(87.14%)enzymes.These properties make the crude mucilaginous fraction from Z.mauritiana fruit an excellent candidate of potential nutraceutical and functional food. | Marimuthu Sangeethapriya Perumal Siddhuraju | 2014 | Food Science and Human Wellness2014,3,2: | 3 |
| 14 | Larvicidal activity of green synthesized silver nanoparticles using bark aqueous extract of Ficus racemosa against Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex gelidus显示文摘Objective:To investigate the larvicidal activity of synthesized silver nanoparticles(Ag NPs) utilizing aqueous bark extract of Ficus racemosa(F.racemosa) was tested against fourth instar larvae of filariasis vector,Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx.quinquefasciatus) and japanese encephalitis vectors,Culex gelidus(Cx.gelidus).Methods:The synthesized Ag NPs was characterized by UV-vis spectrum,X-ray diffraction(XRD),Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR).The larvicidal activities were assessed for 24 h against the larvae of Cx.quinquefasciatus and Cx.gelidus with varying concentrations of aqueous bark extract off.racemosa and synthesized Ag NPs.LC50 and r2 values were calculated.Results:The maximum efficacy was observed in crude aqueous extract of F.racemosa against the larvae of Cx.quinquefasciatus and Cx.gelidus(LC50=67.72 and 63.70 mg/L;r2=0.995 and 0.985) and the synthesized Ag NPs(LC50=12.00 and 11.21 mg/L;r2=0.997 and 0.990).respectively.Synthesized Ag NPs showed the XRD peaks at 2θvalues of 27.61,29.60,35.48,43.48 and 79.68 were identified as (210),(121),(220),(200) and(311) reflections,respectively.The FTIR spectra of Ag NPs exhibited prominent peaks at 3 425,2 878,1 627 and 1 382 in the region 500-3 000 cm-1.The peaks correspond to the presence of a stretching vibration of(NH) C=O group.SEM analysis showed shape in cylindrical,uniform and rod with the average size of 250.60 nm.Conclusions:The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using bark aqueous extract of F.racemosa and its larvicidal activity against the larvae of disease spreading vectors.The maximum larvicidal efficacy was observed in the synthesized Ag NPs. | Kanayairam Velayutham Abdul Abdul Rahuman Govindasamy Rajakumar Selvaraj Mohana Roopan Gandhi Elango Chinnaperumal Kamaraj Sampath Marimuthu Thirunavukkarasu Santhoshkumar Moorthy Iyappan Chinnadurai Siva | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,2: | 2 |

| 16 | Acaricidal activity of synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles using Calotropis gigantea against Rhipicephalus microplus and Haemaphysalis bispinosa显示文摘Objective:To assess the acaricidal activity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles(TiO_2 NPs)synthesized from flower aqueous extract of Calotropis gigantea(C.gigantea)against the larvae of Rhipicephalus(Boophilus)microplus[R.(B.)microplus]and the adult of Haemaphrysalis bispinosa(H.bispinosa).Methods:The lyophilized C.gigantea flower aqueous extract of 50 mg was added with 100 mL of TiO(OH_2)(10 mM)and magnetically stirred for 6 h.Synthesized TiO_2 NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD).Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX).The synthesised TiO_2 NPs were tested against the larvae of R(B.)microplus and adult of H.bispinosa were exposed to filter paper impregnated method.Results:XRD confirmed the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles with the mean size of 10.52 nm.The functional groups for synthesized TiO_2NPs were 1405.19,and 1053.45 cm^(-1)for-NH_2 bending,primary amines and amides and 1053.84and 1078.45 cm^(-1)for C-O.SEM micrographs of the synthesized TiO_2 NPs showed the aggregated and spherical in shape.The maximum efficacy was observed in the aqueous flower extract of C.gigantea and synthesized TiO_2 NPs against R.(B.)microplus(LC_(50)=24.63 and 5.43 mg/L and r^2=0.960 and 0.988)and against H.bispinosa(LC_(50)=35.22 and 9.15 mg/L and r^2=0.969 and 0.969).respectively.Conclusions:The synthesized TiO_2 NPs were highly stable and had significant acaricidal activity against the larvae of R.(B.)microplus and adult of H.bispinosa.This study provides the first report of synthesized TiO_2 NPs and possessed excellent anti-parasitic activity. | Sampath Marimuthu Abdul Abdul Rahuman Chidambaram Jayaseelan Arivarasan Vishnu Kirthi Thirunavukkarasu Santhoshkumar Kanayairam Velayutham Asokan Bagavan Chinnaperumal Kamaraj Gandhi Elango Moorthy Iyappan Chinnadurai Siva Loganathan Karthik Kokati Venkata Bhaskara Rao | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,9: | 2 |

| 19 | Anti-bacterial studies on Hemigraphis colorata(Blume) H.G.Hallier and Elephantopus scaber L.显示文摘Objective:To examine the ethanol,aqueous,chloroform,benzene,acetone and petroleum ether extracts of Hemigraphis colorata(H.colorata) leaves and stem and Elephantopus scaber (E.scaber) leaves,root and flower for the presence of phyto-constituents and screened the antibacterial activity against the selected pathogens.Methods:The fresh materials were shade dried and powdered using the tissue blender.The dried and powered materials(50 g) were extracted successively with 200 mL of aqueous,acetone,benzene,chloroform,etganol.and petroleum ether by using Soxhlet extractor for 8 h at a temperature not exceeding the boiling point of the solvent.Aqueous,acetone,benzene,chloroform,ethanol.and petroleum ether extracts were prepared from powdered materials were used for preliminary phytnehemical and antimicrobial studies using standard methods.Results:The crude aqueous,acetone,benzene,chloroform, ethauol.and petroleum ether extracts E.scaber leaves,flower and root and H.colorata leaves and stem demonstrated that out of(5×6×12 = 360) tests for the presence or absence of the above compounds.188 tests gave positive results and the remaining 172 gave negative results. The results of the phvtochemical screening revealed that phenol(12/12).carbohydrates(9/12). steroids(8/12).saponins and coumarins(7/12).tannins(6/12),proteins(5/12).earboxylic acid and flavonoids(4/12).xanthoproteins(3/12) and alkaloids(2/12) presence in the crude aqueous, acetone,benzene,chloroform,ethanol.and petroleum ether extracts of H.colorata leaves and stem.The crude aqueous,acetone,benzene,chloroform,ethanol.and petroleum ether extracts E.scaber leaves,flower and root displayed the presence of phenol(18/18).tannin(17/18). carbohydrates(16/18).steroids(14/18),oarboxylic acid and coumarins(12/18).saponins(10/18), xanthoprotein(9/18).flavonoids(7/18).protein(4/18) and alkaloids(2/18).The root ethanolic extracts of E.scaber illustrated the highest zone of inhibition against three pathogens viz.. Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)(24 mm).Escherichia coli(E.coli)(16 mm) and Psemlomonas aeruginosa {P.aeruginosa)(13 mm).The chlorofrom extracts of E.scaber showed the highest zone of inhibition against Bacillus cereus(B.ceretus)(12 mm).The leaves ethanolic extracts of E.scaber demonstrated the highest zone of inhibition against three pathogens viz.,Enterococcus faecalis (E.faecalis)(18 mm).Proteus mirabilis(P.mirabilis)(17 mm).Salmonella Typhi(S.typhi)(14 mm) and Enterobacter sp.(11 mm) While the benzene extracts of H.colorata demonstrated maximum zone of inhibition against the pathogen Acinetobucter sp.(14 mm) and S.aureus (12 mm).Conclusions:It is hoped that this study would direct to the establishment of some compounds that could be used to invent new and more potent antimicrobial drugs of natural origin. | Vimala Thankappan Anitha Johnson Marimuthu Solomon Jeeva | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,1: | 2 |
