Computed tomography and patient risk:Facts, perceptions and uncertainties显示文摘Since its introduction in the 1970s, computed tomography(CT) has revolutionized diagnostic decision-making. One of the major concerns associated with the widespread use of CT is the associated increased radiation exposure incurred by patients. The link between ionizing radiation and the subsequent development of neoplasia has been largely based on extrapolating data from studies of survivors of the atomic bombs dropped in Japan in 1945 and on assessments of the increased relative risk of neoplasia in those occupationally exposed to radiation within the nuclear industry. However, the association between exposure to low-dose radiation from diagnostic imaging examinations and oncogenesis remains unclear. With improved technology, significant advances have already been achieved with regards to radiation dose reduction. There are several dose optimization strategies available that may be readily employed including omitting unnecessary images at the ends of acquired series, minimizing the number of phases acquired, and the use of automated exposure control as opposed to fixed tube current techniques. In addition, new image reconstruction techniques that reduce radiation dose have been developed in recent years with promising results. These techniques use iterative reconstruction algorithms to attain diagnostic quality images with reduced image noise at lower radiation doses.Stephen P Power Fiachra Moloney Maria Twomey Karl James Owen J O'Connor Michael M Maher 2016World Journal of Radiology2016,8,12:7
Sensory quality of meat from eight different types of cattle in relation with their biochemical characteristics显示文摘The present study compared eight breeds of cattle differing in gender(heifers, bulls and steers) to determine associations between muscle characteristics and meat sensory qualities of the Longissimus thoracis muscle. Animal types differed in all the muscle characteristics and sensory qualities. Many correlations among muscle characteristics and among sensory qualities were consistent for most animal types. Isocitrate dehydrogenase(ICDH) activities allowed discrimination of muscles with respect to myosin heavy chain(My HC)-I proportions for all animal types. Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) and phosphofructokinase(PFK) activities were positively correlated for most animal types. Overall liking was correlated with beef flavour and abnormal flavour in all animal types and with global tenderness for all animal types except for Charolais cross breed steers. For all animal types except for Angus×Friesian heifers, beef flavour and abnormal flavour were negatively correlated. Overall liking was not correlated with juiciness. PFK, ICDH and citrate synthase(CS) activities were strongly associated with tenderness, beef flavour and overall liking when average values for all animal types were used. However, associations between muscle characteristics and sensory qualities within animal types were weak and inconsistent.M Gagaoua E M C Terlouw D Micol J-F Hocquette A P Moloney K Nuernberg D Bauchart A Boudjellal N D Scollan R I Richardson B Picard 2016Journal of Integrative Agriculture2016,15,7:3
A DIAGONAL SPLIT-CELL MODEL FOR THE OVERLAPPING YEE FDTD METHOD显示文摘In this paper, we present a nonorthogonal overlapping Yee method for solving Maxwell’s equations using the diagonal split-cell model. When material interface is presented, the diagonal split-cell model does not require permittivity averaging so that better accuracy can be achieved. Our numerical results on optical force computation show that the standard FDTD method converges linearly, while the proposed method achieves quadratic convergence and better accuracy.Jinjie Liu Moysey Brio Jerome V. 4C-reactive protein and radiographic findings of lower respiratory tract infection in infants显示文摘AIM To evaluate the association between C-reactive protein(CRP) and radiological evidence of lower respiratory tract infection(LRTI) in infants.METHODS All patients aged less than 4 years who presented with suspected lower respiratory tract infection, who received a peri-presentation chest radiograph and CRP blood measurement over an 18-mo period were included in the study.Age,gender, source of referral,CRP,white cell count, neutrophil count along with the patients' symptoms and radiologist's report were recorded.RESULTS Three hundred and eleven patients met the inclusioncriteria.Abnormal chest radiographs were more common in patients with elevated CRP levels(P < 0.01).Radiologic signs of LRTI were identified in 73.7% of chest radiographs when a patient had a CRP level between 50-99 mg/L.CRP levels were a better predictor of positive chest radiograph findings for those aged greater than I year compared to those 1 year or less.CONCLUSION CRP may be used in patients with suspected LRTI diagnosis to select those who are likely to have positive findings on chest radiograph, thus reducing unnecessary chest radiographs.Maria Twomey Hannah Fleming Fiachra Moloney Kevin P Murphy Lee Crush Siobhan B O’Neill Oisin Flanagan Karl James Conor Bogue Owen J O’Connor Michael M Maher 2017World Journal of Radiology2017,9,4:2
Plant recruitment and survival as indicators of ecological restoration success in abandoned pasture land in Nurcoung,Victoria,Australia显示文摘Introduction:One of the major impediments to developing better restoration strategies is the inadequate documentation of past restoration efforts. In 2008,Greening Australia commenced ecological restoration on the Nurcoung property in Victoria to enhance local biodiversity, and in this paper we report on the habitat restoration outcomes in the three Ecological Vegetation Classes(EVC)found on this property. Methods:Permanent sample plots(12×20 m)were randomly established in July 2010 in each of the restoration areas, with 9,10,and 24 plots demarcated in Shallow Sands Woodland(SSW),Heathy Woodland(HW),and Sandstone Ridge Woodlands(SRW),respectively.Individual plots were prepared to include three seeded rows.Plots were assessed for seedling recruitment and survival in May 2010,April 2011,and May 2012.Records of individual seedling development included their height and cover, and their location within the plot. Results:Our study shows that interaction between the age of the planted and direct-seeded vegetation and the nature of the EVC significantly affects the composition of plants and the soil surface in that species and, further, that soil cover parameters develop in different ways in the different experimental plots.A SIMPER analysis of soil cover parameters shows that most of the variation over the years of restoration is attributable to differences in the amount of bare soil recorded, rather than the amount of leaf-litter cover, and that these changes in soil cover parameters differ between EVCs over the sampling periods. The direct-seeding study shows that whilst most of the broadcast species were recruited, some species used in the Shallow Sands Woodland, the Heathy Woodland, and the Sandstone Ridge Shrubland did not show evidence of recruitment during the three sampling periods.Although the density of most seedlings increased in subsequent sampling years, the planted species Callitris gracilis,Callitris rhomboidea,Hakea muelleriana, and Melaleuca lanceolata did not survive. Conclusions:As a result of the land use change, new assemblages of abiotic and biotic system components appear to lead to the development of stable alternative ecological states. These‘novel’ecosystems now play an important part of the natural resource base, requiring careful characterization to better understand current development trajectories and future states, and to inform management strategies to meet desired restoration outcomes.Although the study sites have been abandoned for a long time, broadcast seeds and plant seedlings show they can overcome internal resilience.Singarayer K Florentine Jessica Gardner Friedrich P Graz Sean Moloney 2013Ecological Processes2013,2,1:2
Computation of flow through the oesophagogastric junction显示文摘Whilst methods exist to indirectly measure the effects of increased flow or gastro-oesophageal refluxing, they cannot quantitatively measure the amount of acid travelling back up into the oesophagus during reflux, nor can they indicate the flow rate through the oesophagogastric junction (OGJ). Since OGJ dysfunction affects flow it seems most appropriate to describe the geometry of the OGJ and its effect on the flow. A device known as the functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) has been shown to reliably measure the geometry of and pressure changes in the OGJ. FLIP cannot directly measure flow but the data gathered from the probe can be used to model flow through the junction by using computational flow dynamics (CFD). CFD uses a set of equations known as the Navier-Stokes equations to predict flow patterns and is a technique widely used in engineering. These equations are complex and require appropriate assumptions to provide simplifications before useful data can be obtained. With the assumption that the cross-sectional areas obtained via FLIP are circular, the radii of these circles can be obtained. A cubic interpolation scheme can then be applied to give a high-resolution geometry for the OGJ. In the case of modelling a reflux scenario, it can be seen that at the narrowest section a jet of fluid squirts into the oesophagus at a higher velocity than the fluid surrounding it. This jet has a maximum velocity of almost 2 ms-1 that occurs where the OGJ is at its narrowest. This simple prediction of acid ‘squirting’ into the oesophagusillustrates how the use of numerical methods can be used to develop a better understanding of the OGJ. This initial work using CFD shows some considerable promise for the future.Barry P McMahon Karl D Odie Kenneth W Moloney Hans Gregersen 2007World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,9:2
