Compliant plant wearables for localized microclimate and plant growth monitoring显示文摘The microclimate surrounding a plant has major effect on its health and photosynthesis process, where certain plants struggle in suboptimal environmental conditions and unbalanced levels of humidity and temperature. The ability to remotely track and correlate the effect of local environmental conditions on the healthy growth of plants can have great impact for increasing survival rate of plants and augmenting agriculture output. This necessitates the widespread distribution of lightweight sensory devices on the surface of each plant.Using flexible and biocompatible materials coupled with a smart compact design for a low power and lightweight system,we develop widely deployed, autonomous, and compliant wearables for plants. The demonstrated wearables integrate temperature, humidity and strain sensors, and can be intimately deployed on the soft surface of any plant to remotely and continuously evaluate optimal growth settings. This is enabled through simultaneous detection of environmental conditions while quantitatively tracking the growth rate(viz.elongation).Finally,we establish a nature-inspired origami-assembled 3D-printed“PlantCopter”,used as a launching platform for our plant wearable to enable widespread microclimate monitoring in large fields. | Joanna M.Nassar Sherjeel M.Khan Diego Rosas Villalva Maha M.Nour Amani S.Almuslem Muhammad M.Hussain | 2018 | npj Flexible Electronics2018,2,1: | 5

Improving Acacia auriculiformis seedlings using microbial inoculant(Beneficial Microorganisms)显示文摘A microbial inoculant, known as effective microorganisms(EM), was applied to determine its efficacy on seed germination and seedling growth in the nursery of Acacia auriculiformis A Cunn. ex Benth. The seedlings were grown in a mixture of sandy soil and cow dung(3:1) and kept in polybags; EM was poured at different concentrations(0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 10%). Seed germination rate and growth parameters of seedlings – shoot and root lengths, fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots, vigor, volume, and quality indices and sturdiness – were measured. The nodulation status influenced by EM was also observed, along with the measurement of pigment contents in leaves. The highest germination rate(72%) was observed in 2% EM solution while the lowest(55%) was found in control treatment. The highest shoot and root lengths(30.6 cm and 31.2 cm respectively) were recorded in 2% EM and were significantly(p <0.05) different from control. Both fresh and dry weights of shoots were maximum(8.66 g and 2.99 g respectively) in 2% EM, whereas both fresh and dry weights of root were maximum(2.56 g and 1.23 g respectively) in 5% EM solution. Although the highest vigor index, volume index, and sturdiness(4450, 628 and 67.5 respectively) were found in 2% EM, the highest quality index(0.455) was found in 5% EM solution. The nodule number was higher at a very low(0.5%) concentration of EM but it normally decreased with the increase of concentration. The contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid were maximum(43.26 mg?L-1, 13.56 mg?L-1and 17.99 mg?L-1 respectively) in 2% EM. Therefore, low concentration of EM(up to 2%)can be recommended for getting maximum seed germination and seedling development of A. auriculiformis in the nursery. | Bayezid M.Khan M.K.Hossain M.A.U.Mridha | 2014 | Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,2: | 2

Non-axisymmetric Homann stagnation-point flow of Walter’s B nanofluid over a cylindrical disk显示文摘The study of non-axisymmetric Homann stagnation-point flow of Walter’s B nanofluid along with magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) and non-linear Rosseland thermal radiation over a cylindrical disk in the existence of the time-independent free stream is considered. Moreover, the notable impacts of thermophoresis and Brownian motion are analyzed by Buongiorno’s model. The momentum, energy, and concentration equations are converted into the dimensionless coupled ordinary differential equations via similarity transformations, which are later numerically solved by altering the values of the pertinent parameters. The numerical and asymptotic solutions for the large shear-to-strain rate ratio γ =a/bfor the parameters of the displacement thicknesses and the wall-shear stress are computed by perturbative expansion and analyzed. Furthermore, the technique bvp4c in MATLAB is deployed as an efficient method to analyze the calculations for the non-dimensional velocities, temperature, displacement thickness, and concentration profiles. It is observed that the two-dimensional displacement thickness parameters α andβ are reduced due to the viscoelasticity and magnetic field effects. Moreover, when the shear-to-strain rate ratio approaches infinity, α is closer to its asymptotic value, while βand the three-dimensional displacement thickness parameter δ1 show the opposite trend. The outcomes of the viscoelasticity and the magnetic field on the skin friction are also determined. It is concluded that ■ reaches its asymptotic behavior when the shearto-strain rate ratio approaches infinity. Meanwhile, ■ shows different results. | M.KHAN M.SARFRAZ J.AHMED L.AHMAD C.FETECAU | 2020 | Applied Mathematics and Mechanics(English Edition)2020,41,5: | 1
Observation and modelling of stimulated Raman scattering driven by an optically smoothed laser beam in experimental conditions relevant for shock ignition显示文摘We report results and modelling of an experiment performed at the Target Area West Vulcan laser facility, aimed at investigating laser±plasma interaction in conditions that are of interest for the shock ignition scheme in inertial confinement fusion(ICF),that is,laser intensity higher than 10^(16) W/cm^(2) impinging on a hot(T>1 keV),inhomogeneous and long scalelength pre-formed plasma.Measurements show a significant stimulated Raman scattering(SRS)backscattering(;%-20%of laser energy)driven at low plasma densities and no signatures of two-plasmon decay(TPD)/SRS driven at the quarter critical density region. Results are satisfactorily reproduced by an analytical model accounting for the convective SRS growth in independent laser speckles,in conditions where the reflectivity is dominated by the contribution from the most intense speckles, where SRS becomes saturated.Analytical and kinetic simulations well reproduce the onset of SRS at low plasma densities in a regime strongly affected by non-linear Landau damping and by filamentation of the most intense laser speckles. The absence of TPD/SRS at higher densities is explained by pump depletion and plasma smoothing driven by filamentation. The prevalence of laser coupling in the low-density profile justifies the low temperature measured for hot electrons(7-12 keV),which is well reproduced by numerical simulations. | G.Cristoforetti S.Hüller P.Koester L.Antonelli S.Atzeni F.Baffigi D.Batani C.Baird N.Booth M.Galimberti K.Glize A.Héron M.Khan P.Loiseau D.Mancelli M.Notley P.Oliveira O.Renner M.Smid A.Schiavi G.Tran N.C.Woolsey L.A.Gizzi | 2021 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2021,9,4: | 1
Chemically reactive and radiative von Kármán swirling flow due to a rotating disk显示文摘A new mathematical model is presented to study the heat and mass transfer characteristics of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) Maxwell fluid flow over a convectively heated stretchable rotating disk. To regulate the fluid temperature at the surface, a simple isothermal model of homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions is employed. The impact of nonlinear thermal radiative heat flux on thermal transport features is studied. The transformed nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations is solved numerically with an efficient method, namely, the Runge-Kutta-Felberg fourth-order and fifth-order(RKF45)integration scheme using the MAPLE software. Achieved results are validated with previous studies in an excellent way. Major outcomes reveal that the magnetic flux reduces the velocity components in the radial, angular, and axial directions, and enhances the fluid temperature. Also, the presence of radiative heat flux is to raise the temperature of fluid. Further, the strength of homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions is useful to diminish the concentration of reaction. | M.KHAN J.AHMED L.AHMAD | 2018 | Applied Mathematics and Mechanics(English Edition)2018,39,9: | 1
Identification of radiation treatment of wheat (Triticum aestivum.L) and rice (Oryza sativa.L) samples using thermoluminescence of contaminating minerals显示文摘Food irradiation is gaining popularity worldwide and this technology is important to improve quality and reduce the post harvest losses of food.Because of the rapid commercialization of irradiated foods throughout the world, compliance of different regulations relating to use of technology in different countries and demand of consum- ers for clear labelling of irradiated foods, there is need for the development of analytical methods to detect radiation treatment of food.Among several methods studied so far, thermoluminescence (TL) is an important method that can be used to find out the irradiation history of food that contain even a very minute amount of dust particles. In this study, the irradiated and unirradiated wheat and rice samples were analyzed using the TL method. The samples were purchased from the local market of Peshawar and irradiated to radiation doses of 0.5 and 1.0 kGy using Co-60 gamma irradiator at the Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA),Peshawar. The mineral contaminants were isolated by jet water, ultrasonic treatment, and density gradient.TL glow curves of the isolated minerals from irradiated and unirradiated samples were recorded between the temperature ranges of 50—500℃using a TL reader.Generally, the glow curves for irradiated samples showed much higher TL intensities (TL_1) than the unirradiated samples. The results were normalized by re-irradiation of mineral samples to gamma-ray dose of 1.0 kGy followed by determination of the second glow curves (TL_2).The ratio of the area of first glow curve to that of second glow curve (TL_1/TL_2) was calcu- lated for selected temperature intervals and compared with the recommended values for unirradiated and irradiated samples. Finally, the shapes of the glow curves for irradiated and unirradiated samples were also analyzed. On the ba- sis of these results (comparison of TL-intensities,TL_1/TL_2 ratios and shapes of the glow curves),all the irradiated and unirradiated samples of wheat and rice were unequivocally identified. | Hasan M.KHAN Ijaz A.BHATTI | 2007 | Nuclear Science and Techniques2007,18,1: | 1

Rotational flow of Oldroyd-B nanofluid subject to Cattaneo-Christov double diffusion theory显示文摘A nanofluid is composed of a base fluid component and nanoparticles, in which the nanoparticles are dispersed in the base fluid. The addition of nanoparticles into a base fluid can remarkably improve the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid, and such an increment of thermal conductivity can play an important role in improving the heat transfer rate of the base fluid. Further, the dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids along with nanoparticles is quite interesting with numerous industrial applications. The present predominately predictive modeling studies the flow of the viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid over a rotating disk in the presence of nanoparticles. A progressive amendment in the heat and concentration equations is made by exploiting the Cattaneo-Christov heat and mass flux expressions. The characteristic of the Lorentz force due to the magnetic field applied normal to the disk is studied. The Buongiorno model together with the Cattaneo-Christov theory is implemented in the Oldroyd-B nanofluid flow to investigate the heat and mass transport mechanism. This theory predicts the characteristics of the fluid thermal and solutal relaxation time on the boundary layer flow. The von K′arm′an similarity functions are utilized to convert the partial differential equations(PDEs) into ordinary differential equations(ODEs). A homotopic approach for obtaining the analytical solutions to the governing nonlinear problem is carried out. The graphical results are obtained for the velocity field, temperature, and concentration distributions. Comparisons are made for a limiting case between the numerical and analytical solutions, and the results are found in good agreement. The results reveal that the thermal and solutal relaxation time parameters diminish the temperature and concentration distributions, respectively. The axial flow decreases in the downward direction for higher values of the retardation time parameter. The impact of the thermophoresis parameter boosts the temperature distribution. | A.HAFEEZ M.KHAN A.AHMED J.AHMED | 2020 | Applied Mathematics and Mechanics(English Edition)2020,41,7: | 1

Surveillance of Chikungunya virus activity in some North-eastern states of India显示文摘Objective: To detect the prevalence pattern of Chikungunya virus in three states of Northeast India. Methods: A total of 1 510 samples were collected from different private and government hospitals of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Serum was tested for the presence of IgM antibodies against Chikungunya virus followed by RT-PCR for amplification of Chikungunya E1 gene region using specific primers. Results: Overall, 11.83%(172/1 454) clinical samples were positive by MAC-ELISA and/or RT-PCR assay. Asymptomatic infection was seen in 17.86%. Males were more affected than females and age group 16-30 years was mostly affected. Fever(100.00%) was the primary symptom followed by headache(72.03%) and arthralgia(41.53%). Only 118 Chikungunya positive cases could be traced, of which 25.42% complained about sequelae of infection. In entomological investigation, Aedes aegypti was more predominant(92.10%) than Aedes albopictus(7.90%). No mosquito pools could be incriminated for Chikungunya virus. Conclusions: In this study, Chikungunya was observed to be prevalent in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Though Chikungunya is a selflimiting infection, increasing morbidity by CHIKV infection is affecting social and economic status of individual. Thus, a community empowerment to effectively control mosquito population by employing different mosquito control measures along with personal protection is mandatory to tackle future outbreak of the disease. | Prafulla Dutta Siraj A.Khan Anil C.Phukan Sarat Hazarika Naba K.Hazarika Sumi Chetry Abdul M.Khan Harpreet Kaur | 2019 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2019,12,1: | 0
Thermal analysis in swirl motion of Maxwell nanofluid over a rotating circular cylinder显示文摘In this paper, the mechanism of thermal energy transport in swirling flow of the Maxwell nanofluid induced by a stretchable rotating cylinder is studied. The rotation of the cylinder is kept constant in order to avoid the induced axially secondary flow.Further, the novel features of heat generation/absorption,thermal radiation, and Joule heating are studied to control the rate of heat transfer. The effects of Brownian and thermophoretic forces exerted by the Maxwell nanofluid to the transport of thermal energy are investigated by utilizing an effective model for the nanofluid proposed by Buongiorno. The whole physical problem of fluid flow and thermal energy transport is modelled in the form of partial differential equations(PDEs)and transformed into nonlinear ordinary differential equations(ODEs)with the help of the suitable flow ansatz.Numerically acquired results through the technique bvp4c are reported graphically with physical explanation.Graphical analysis reveals that there is higher transport of heat energy in the Maxwell nanoliquid for a constant wall temperature(CWT)as compared with the prescribed surface temperature(PST).Both thermophoretic and Brownian forces enhance the thermal energy transport in the flowing Maxwell nanofluid. Moreover, the temperature distribution increases with increasing values of the radiation parameter and the Eckert number. It is also noted that an increase in Reynolds number reduces the penetration depth, and as a result the flow and transport of energy occur only near the surface of the cylinder. | A.AHMED M.KHAN J.AHMED | 2020 | Applied Mathematics and Mechanics(English Edition)2020,41,9: | 0
Characterization of hot electrons generated by laser-plasma interaction at shock ignition intensities显示文摘In an experiment carried out at the Prague Asterix Laser System at laser intensities relevant to shock ignition conditions(I>10^(16) W/cm^(2)),the heating and transport of hot electrons were studied by using several complementary diagnostics,i.e.,K_(α)time-resolved imaging, hard x-ray filtering(a bremsstrahlung cannon),and electron spectroscopy.Ablators with differing composition from low Z(parylene N)to high Z(nickel)were used in multilayer planar targets to produce plasmas with different coronal temperature and collisionality and modify the conditions of hot-electron generation. The variety of available diagnostics allowed full characterization of the population of hot electrons, retrieving their conversion efficiency, time generation and duration, temperature, and angular divergence. The obtained results are shown to be consistent with those from detailed simulations and similar inertial confinement fusion experiments.Based on the measured data, the advantages, reliability, and complementarity of the experimental diagnostics are discussed. | E.D.Filippov M.Khan A.Tentori P.Gajdos A.S.Martynenko R.Dudzak P.Koester G.Zeraouli D.Mancelli F.Baffigi L.A.Gizzi S.A.Pikuz Ph.D.Nicolaï N.C.Woolsey R.Fedosejevs M.Krus L.Juha D.Batani O.Renner G.Cristoforetti | 2023 | Matter and Radiation at Extremes2023,8,6: | 0
The dilemma of cytomegalovirus and hepatitis B virus interaction显示文摘Hepatitis B virus(HBV)remains a global public health problem despite the availability of effective vaccine and antiviral therapy.Cytomegalovirus(CMV),another hepatotropic virus,is also very prevalent in the general population worldwide. Both HBV and CMV can persist in the host and have potential to reactivate especially with weakened host cellular immunity.Superimposed CMV infection can lead to severe HBV reactivation. The pathogenesis of the co-infection of HBV and CMV remains poorly understood.Studies reported conflicting results regarding the inhibitory effect of CMV on HBV replication. There is an unmet need on the management of co-infection of HBV and CMV;research initiatives dedicated to understanding their interactions are urgently needed. | Muzammil M.Khan Mukarram J.Ali Hira Hanif Muhammad H.Maqsood Imama Ahmad Javier E.G.Alvarez Maria-Andreea Catana Daryl T.Y.Lau | 2022 | Gastroenterology Report2022,10,1: | 0
