1The Ghd7 transcription factor represses ARE1 expression to enhance nitrogen utilization and grain yield in rice显示文摘The genetic improvement of nitrogen use efficiency(NUE)of crops is vital for grain productivity and sustainable agriculture.However,the regulatory mechanism of NUE remains largely elusive.Here,we report that the rice Grain number,plant height,and heading date7(Ghd7)gene genetically acts upstream of ABC1 REPRESSOR1(ARE1),a negative regulator of NUE,to positively regulate nitrogen utilization.As a transcriptional repressor,Ghd7 directly binds to two Evening Element-like motifs in the promoter and intron 1 of ARE1,likely in a cooperative manner,to repress its expression.Ghd7 and ARE1 display diurnal expression patterns in an inverse oscillation manner,mirroring a regulatory scheme based on these two loci.Analysis of a panel of 2656 rice varieties suggests that the elite alleles of Ghd7 and ARE1 have undergone diversifying selection during breeding.Moreover,the allelic distribution of Ghd7 and ARE1 is associated with the soil nitrogen deposition rate in East Asia and South Asia.Remarkably,the combination of the Ghd7 and ARE1 elite alleles substantially improves NUE and yield performance under nitrogen-limiting conditions.Collectively,these results define a Ghd7–ARE1-based regulatory mechanism of nitrogen utilization,providing useful targets for genetic improvement of rice NUE.Qing Wang Qingmei Su Jinqiang Nian Jian Zhang Meng Guo Guojun Dong Jiang Hu Rongsheng Wang Changshuo Wei Guanwen Li Wan Wang Hui-Shan Guo Shaoyang Lin Wenfeng Qian XianzhiXie Qian Qian Fan Chen Jianru Zuo 2021Molecular Plant2021,14,6:10
2Enhancing rice grain production by manipulating the naturally evolved cis-regulatory element-containing inverted repeat sequence of OsREM20显示文摘Grain number per panicle(GNP)is an important agronomic trait that contributes to rice grain yield.Despite its importance in rice breeding,the molecular mechanism underlying GNP regulation remains largely unknown.In this study,we identified a previously unrecognized regulatory gene that controls GNP in rice,Oryza sativa REPRODUCTIVE MERISTEM 20(OsREM20),which encodes a B3 domain transcription factor.Through genetic analysis and transgenic validation we found that genetic variation in the CArG box-containing inverted repeat(IR)sequence of the OsREM20 promoter alters its expression level and contributes to GNP variation among rice varieties.Furthermore,we revealed that the IR sequence regulates OsREM20 expression by affecting the direct binding of OsMADS34 to the CArG box within the IR sequence.Interestingly,the divergent pOsREM20IR and pOsREM20ΔIR alleles were found to originate from different Oryza rufipogon accessions,and were independently inherited into the japonica and indica subspecies,respectively,during domestication.Importantly,we demonstrated that IR sequence variations in the OsREM20 promoter can be utilized for germplasm improvement through either genome editing or traditional breeding.Taken together,our study characterizes novel genetic variations responsible for GNP diversity in rice,reveals the underlying molecular mechanism in the regulation of agronomically important gene expression,and provides a promising strategy for improving rice production by manipulating the cis-regulatory element-containing IR sequence.Xiaowei Wu Yan Liang Hengbin Gao Jiyao Wang Yan Zhao Lekai Hua Yundong Yuan Ahong Wang Xiaohui Zhang Jiafan Liu Jie Zhou Xiangbing Meng Dahan Zhang Shaoyang Lin Xuehui Huang Bin Han Jiayang Li Yonghong Wang 2021Molecular Plant2021,14,6:3
3The'Chinese World Order'Encounters the'East Asian World Order'—Post-War Japanese Historians'Debates on the Tribute System显示文摘In this paper,I trace the post-war Japanese genealogy of studies on China's tribute system(imperial China's relatively tolerant approach to its foreign relations)in relation to the English-language work of historian John King Fairbank(1907-91).I emphasize that,together with the sporadic Chinese studies into China's tribute system prior to the 1950s,it was the post-war research of Japanese historians that inspired Fairbank,who,in turn,further stimulated critical debates on the topic in Japan.I first concentrate on post-war Japanese debates concerning an'East Asian world order'based on a'system of investiture/tribute.'This notion,developed by the Japanese historian Nishijima Sadao in 1962,precisely corresponds to Fairbank's 1941 understanding of the'tribute system'or'Confucian world-order,'but contrasts with Fairbank's later,controversial understanding of a'Chinese world order'as proposed in 1968.In the second part of this paper,I introduce Japanese historian Hamashita Takeshi's 1980s and 1990s arguments on the'tribute trade system'as representative of the younger generation within this genealogy,contrasting it with the work of Immanuel Wallerstein and Andre Gunder Frank.In the third part,Ⅰlocate this Japanese genealogy within the wider historical context of post-war Japanese intellectual cultural politics.This means that I examine Japanese historians'arguments both from the angle of historiography and from the perspective of post-war Japanese intellectual history.Lin Shaoyang 2020Frontiers of History in China2020,15,2:1

6Investigation of nanostructure of konjac-based water absorbents with atomic force microscopy显示文摘Atomic force microscopy technology is gradually spreading to almost all aspects,including food science and technology,since it was first invented in 1986.In this study,this powerful instrument was applied to image nanostructures of three water absorbents-original konjac powder,konjac powder grafted with acrylic acid using^(60)Coγ-irradiation and regenerated grafted powder.Water absorption capacities and the rates of the three absorbents were also determined in this work.Original konjac powder could only absorb 60 times(w/w)of water,while 270 times for the grafted absorbent and 360 times for the regenerated absorbent.The initial water absorption rates in both tap and distilled water were high,but the rate decreased steeply as time elapsed.After 20 min,the absorbent was close to saturated status.These physical properties were in accordance with the nanostructures of these three water absorbents.Shengrong GENG Ruotai LIN Mingli CHEN Shaoyang LIU Yifen WANG 2009Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering2009,3,4:0
7Comparative Analysis on the Stability Mechanism of Droop Control and VID Control in DC Microgrid显示文摘Voltage resonance and fluctuation deteriorate the stability of DC microgrids(DC-MGs)and restrict their popularization.Conventional droop control cannot suppress voltage fluctuation and damp oscillations.Therefore,new control methods,namely,droop+filter control and virtual inertia and damping control,are proposed.These methods differ owing to the addition of low pass filter(LPF)and virtual inertia loop.In this study,the stability of these control methods is investigated comprehensively to understand their differences arising from the use of LPF and inertia loop as well as the underlying dynamic stability mechanism.The leading causes of voltage instability in DC-MGs regulated by droop control are first presented.Subsequently,control methods for solving this issue are compared and their simplified small-signal models are constructed.Based on eigenvalue analysis,the DC-MG is equivalent to a third-order system.Different control effects can be acquired by changing the control parameters and the location of the eigenvalues;furthermore,they can be used to understand the dynamic stability.Eigenvalue analysis can provide parameter design guidelines.Finally,the simulation results verify the validity of the theoretical analysis.Gang Lin Wei Zuo Yong Li Jiayan Liu Shaoyang Wang Pengcheng Wang 2021Chinese Journal of Electrical Engineering2021,7,1:0
8Re-Defining the Late Qing Revolution:Its Continuity with the Taiping Rebellion,Radical Student Politics and Larger Global Context显示文摘Studies in recent decades conducted from the angle of provincial-level local self-government have done much to help relativize narratives of the 1911 Revolution in China that emphasize the importance of armed uprisings.However, these endeavors still have room to locate the revolution within a global context and to understand its implications as a revolution conducted through the conduits of culture and thought.More importantly,these existing studies are also insufficient in terms of viewing the Late Qing Revolution through a longer time span to see the Revolution as the new development and continuity of a much longer revolution that began with the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64).The Taiping Rebellion substantially weakened the rule of the Qing court.In other words,this author regards the Late Qing Revolution as a part of the long revolution starting from the outbreak of the Taiping Rebellion.Through this analysis,the author demonstrates how the Late Qing Revolution was comprised of three key components:armed uprisings,self-government movements,and finally,a revolution through words and culture including the student movements at home and in Tokyo.It argues that,to a certain degree,it is the Taiping Rebellion that made the Revolution successful in a relatively pacifistic way,and that,in particular,made possible the non-violent revolutions of self-government and the revolution through words and culture.Lin Shaoyang 2018Frontiers of History in China2018,13,4:0
