1The TanSat mission: preliminary global observations显示文摘The Chinese global carbon dioxide monitoring satellite (Tan Sat) was launched successfully in December2016 and has completed its on-orbit tests and calibration. Tan Sat aims to measure the atmospheric column-averaged dry air mole fractions of carbon dioxide (XCO_2) with a precision of 4 ppm at the regional scale, and in addition, to derive global and regional CO2fluxes. Progress towards these objectives is reviewed and the first scientific results from Tan Sat measurements are presented. Tan Sat on-orbit tests indicate that the Atmospheric Carbon dioxide Grating Spectrometer is in normal working status and is beginning to produce L1B products. The preliminary Tan Sat XCO_2products have been retrieved by an algorithm and compared to NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) measurements during an overlapping observation period. 3First China ocean reflection experiment using coastal GNSS-R显示文摘It is a new way for oceanographic remote sensing using the GNSS-Reflection technique. Sea waves, tides and sea surface wind can be obtained by analyzing the direct and reflected GPS signals from sea surface. It has become an advanced field concerned by many researchers. In this paper the first China Ocean Reflection Experiment (CORE) with the coastal GNSS-R in the southeast is reported and the method to retrieve oceanographic parameters with the direct and reflected GPS signals is studied. 4Statistics of gravity waves in the lower stratosphere over Beijing based on high vertical resolution radiosonde显示文摘The seasonal variation of inertia gravity-wave activity in the lower stratosphere (17―24 km) over Beijing is studied based on the high vertical resolution radionsonde observa- tions (from December 2001 to February 2003) of Beijing Observatory (116°28′E, 39°48′N). Some of the important gravity-wave parameters, such as intrinsic frequency, and propagation direction, are estimated according to the polarized relation among gravity-wave wind components and temperature. Time series of wave energy show that the largest wave amplitudes occur during the winter and the least during the summer, and the average of the KE:PE ratios is about 2.6. Zonal and meridional wind perturbations have almost the same roots of mean variances, which shows that the wave energy in the lower stratosphere is isotropic horizontally. The motion and tem- perature fields are dominated by waves with vertical wavelengths of 1.5―3 km, which occupy above 80% samples, with a mean value of about 2.3 km. The horizontal wavelengths are mainly distributed between 100―800 km, averaging 445 km. The ratio of the mean horizontal to vertical wavelength is about 200:1, which indicates that the wave propagates nearly horizontally, with a very small vertical angle. The intrinsic frequency is estimated by fitting a polarized ellipse to the wind perturbations after band-filtering waves with a wavelength of 1.5―3 km, and the results show that the intrinsic frequency is dominated by 1f―3.5f, with an averaging value of 2f, corre- sponding to an intrinsic time period of 9 hours. 8Change of NO_2 column density over Beijing from satellite measurement during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games显示文摘The effect of the air quality ensuring measures for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in reducing air pollution during the game period is assessed using the tropospheric NO2 column density retrieved from Ozone Monitoring Instrument onboard AURA satel- lite. The basic method of the assessment is the comparison of the NO2 column densities during the game period with that during the corresponding period of 2005?2007 for the Beijing area, and the comparison among Beijing and neighbouring cities Tianjin and Tangshan, which are of similar situation in air pollution of NO2 in recent years. The images of tropospheric NO2 column den- sities over Northern China during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games show the remarkable effect of the air quality ensuring meas- ures in reducing NO2 pollution: the tropospheric NO2 column density in Beijing is much lower than that in Tianjin and Tangshan, while there were very similar values in the three large cities during the same period of the last three years. 9Characteristics of atmospheric aerosol optical depth variation over China in recent 30 years显示文摘This note retrieves the annual and monthly mean 0.75 urn aerosol optical depth (AOD) by using the daily direct solar radiation and sunshine duration data of 47 solar stations from 1961 to 1990. The characteristic of AOD variation over China in recent 30 years was analyzed. The results indicate that AOD increased obviously over China from 1961 to 1990. AOD increased most rapidly over the east part of Southwest China, the middle-and-lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Tibetan Plateau. The increasing trend of AOD is also relatively distinct in North China, the Shandong Peninsula, east part of Qinghai Province, and coastal areas of Guangdong Province. However, in most parts of Northwest China and Northeast China, the increase of AOD is less significant, while in the west part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and some parts of Yunnan Province, AOD shows decreasing tendency. Generally, AOD reaches its maximum in spring and the minimum appears in summer. 10The First Global Carbon Dioxide Flux Map Derived from TanSat Measurements显示文摘Space-borne measurements of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations provide global observation constraints for top-down estimates of surface carbon flux.Here,the first estimates of the global distribution of carbon surface fluxes inferred from dry-air CO_2 column (XCO_2) measurements by the Chinese Global Carbon Dioxide Monitoring Scientific Experimental Satellite (Tan Sat) are presented.An ensemble transform Kalman filter (ETKF) data assimilation system coupled with the GEOS-Chem global chemistry transport model is used to optimally fit model simulations with the Tan Sat XCO_2 observations,which were retrieved using the Institute of Atmospheric Physics Carbon dioxide retrieval Algorithm for Satellite remote sensing (IAPCAS).High posterior error reduction (30%–50%) compared with a priori fluxes indicates that assimilating satellite XCO_2 measurements provides highly effective constraints on global carbon flux estimation.Their impacts are also highlighted by significant spatiotemporal shifts in flux patterns over regions critical to the global carbon budget,such as tropical South America and China.An integrated global land carbon net flux of 6.71±0.76 Gt C yr^(-1) over12 months (May 2017–April 2018) is estimated from the Tan Sat XCO_2 data,which is generally consistent with other inversions based on satellite data,such as the JAXA GOSAT and NASA OCO-2 XCO_2 retrievals.However,discrepancies were found in some regional flux estimates,particularly over the Southern Hemisphere,where there may still be uncorrected bias between satellite measurements due to the lack of independent reference observations.The results of this study provide the groundwork for further studies using current or future Tan Sat XCO_2 data together with other surfacebased and space-borne measurements to quantify biosphere–atmosphere carbon exchange.Dongxu YANG Yi LIU Liang FENG Jing WANG Lu YAO Zhaonan CAI Sihong ZHU Naimeng LU Daren LYU 2021Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,9:5
11A New TanSat XCO2 Global Product towards Climate Studies显示文摘The 1st Chinese carbon dioxide(CO2)monitoring satellite mission,TanSat,was launched in 2016.The 1st TanSat global map of CO2 dry-air mixing ratio(XCO2)measurements over land was released as version 1 data product with an accuracy of 2.11 ppmv(parts per million by volume).In this paper,we introduce a new(version 2)TanSat global XCO2 product that is approached by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics Carbon dioxide retrieval Algorithm for Satellite remote sensing(IAPCAS),and the European Space Agency(ESA)Climate Change Initiative plus(CCI+)TanSat XCO2 product by University of Leicester Full Physics(UoL-FP)retrieval algorithm.The correction of the measurement spectrum improves the accuracy(−0.08 ppmv)and precision(1.47 ppmv)of the new retrieval,which provides opportunity for further application in global carbon flux studies in the future.Inter-comparison between the two retrievals indicates a good agreement,with a standard deviation of 1.28 ppmv and a bias of−0.35 ppmv.Dongxu YANG Yi LIU Hartmut BOESCH Lu YAO Antonio DI NOIA Zhaonan CAI Naimeng LU Daren LYU Maohua WANG Jing WANG Zengshan YIN Yuquan ZHENG 2021Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,1:4
12Global structures of the DE3 tide显示文摘The Hough mode decomposition (HMD) is used to investigate the global structures of the eastward propagating diurnal tide of zonal wavenumber 3 (DE3). The tide is delineated by using the SABER/ TIMED temperatures collected during 2002―2006. The HMD analysis results show that the DE3 tide is primarily dominated by two leading propagating Hough modes, i.e., (-3, 3) and (-3, 4) modes; the in-fluences .of the other Hough modes including trapped modes can be neglected. Based upon the HMD analysis results, this paper first reported the maximum of the tidal activity in the MLT region. The re-sults show that the DE3 tide exhibits annual unimodal distribution with the maximal amplitude occur-ring at 110 km in late summer (around July each year). Moreover, characteristic 2-year period variation is observed in the (-3, 3) Hough mode. And this type of inter-annual variation is further reflected in the tidal amplitude at 110 km height. For example, corresponding to the 2-year variation of the (-3, 3) mode, the DE3 tidal amplitude exhibits two substantially enhanced activities with maximal amplitude exceed-ing 12 K in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Moreover, current investigation results indicate that the influ-ence of the second propagating Hough mode, (-3, 4) mode, is important, in particular at the height un-der 100 km, where the DE3 amplitudes exhibit antisymmetric distribution with respect to the equator. The (-3, 4) mode exhibits bimodal distribution over a yearly course, which dominates the DE3 tide in the lower mesosphere. For example, two maximal DE3 activities were observed in late-winter-to-early- spring and late-autumn-to-early-winter, respectively. 14Retrievals of over-ocean precipitable water from SSM/I by SOM network model显示文摘An SOM network model was developed for retrievals of the oceanic total precipitable water (PW) from the SSM/I, by using the SSM/I and radiosonde observation data set provided by the NASDA (Japan). The model was first trained by 5/6 of the data, and the other data were used to test the retrieval ability of the model. 15Comparison of Beijing MST Radar and Radiosonde Horizontal Wind Measurements显示文摘To determine the performance and data accuracy of the 50 MHz Beijing Mesosphere–Stratosphere–Troposphere(MST)radar,comparisons of radar measured horizontal winds in the height range 3–25 km with radiosonde observations were made during 2012.A total of 427 profiles and 15 210 data pairs were compared.There was very good agreement between the two types of measurement.Standard deviations of difference(mean difference)for wind direction,wind speed,zonal wind and meridional wind were 24.86?(0.77?),3.37(-0.44),3.33(-0.32)and 3.58(-0.25)m s^(^(-1)),respectively.The annual standard deviations of differences for wind speed were within 2.5–3 m s^(-1)at all heights apart from 10–15 km,the area of strong winds,where the values were 3–4 m s^(-1).The relatively larger differences were mainly due to wind field variations in height regions with larger wind speeds,stronger wind shear and the quasi-zero wind layer.A lower MST radar SNR and a lower percentage of data pairs compared will also result in larger inconsistencies.Importantly,this study found that differences between the MST radar and radiosonde observations did not simply increase when balloon drift resulted in an increase in the real-time distance between the two instruments,but also depended on spatiotemporal structures and their respective positions in the contemporary synoptic systems.In this sense,the MST radar was shown to be a unique observation facility for atmospheric dynamics studies,as well as an operational meteorological observation system with a high temporal and vertical resolution.Yufang TIAN Daren LU 2017Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2017,34,1:3
16Determination of the optical thickness and effective particle radius of clouds from transmitted solar radiation measurements显示文摘A method is presented for determining the optical thickness (τc) and effective particle radius (re) of stratiform cloud layers from transmitted solar radiation measurements. A detailed study shows that the cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius of water clouds can be determined from transmission function measurements at 0.75 and 2.13 μm, provided that the scaled optical thickness τ′0.75>1 and re>5 μm. The wavelengths adopted by our study are similar to the channels of the moderate resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS). The proposed method is invalid for optically thin clouds since transmission at 2.13 μm is less sensitive to re. The retrieval errors of τ′0.75 and re monotonically decrease with increasing τc. For clouds having τ′0.75≥2, the retrieval errors of τ′0.75 and re are below 10% and 20%, respectively. 17Seasonal variation of global stratosphere-troposphere mass exchange显示文摘By Wei formula in pressure coordinate, the stratosphere-troposphere mass exchange (STME) is diagnosed globally for 44 years from 1958 to 2001 using the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis datasets. Regions of mass flux into the stratosphere are found over Indonesia, bay of Bangladesh and the mid-west coast of South Africa. Compensating mass outflow from the stratosphere appears mainly over mid-latitudes near large-scale troughs. Upward and downward transport of mass at the middle and high latitudes accompany with each other. Mass flux into troposphere is stronger in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. Strong downward mass flux into the troposphere occurs in eastern Asia the whole year with nearly stable sites. Although the area of eastern Asia accounts for only 5.6% of that of the northern hemisphere (NH), its net mass exchange reaches 15.83% of that of the NH, which means that research on STME of eastern Asia is greatly important to that of the NH and even the global areas. Air across the tropopause enters more from stratosphere to troposphere than that from troposphere to stratosphere, which is possibly related with systematic bias of the assimilated datasets and with persistent rise of the tropopause height. Contributions of the mass exchange and the mass flux exchange in the NH and southern hemisphere (SH) on their latitudes increase from equator to pole, with larger contributions in the NH. 18TanSat Mission Achievements: from Scientific Driving to Preliminary Observations显示文摘The Chinese global carbon dioxide monitoring satellite(TanSat)was successfully launched in December 2016 and has completed its on-orbit tests and calibration.TanSat aims to measure the atmospheric Carbon Dioxide column-averaged dry air mole fractions(X_(CO_2))with a precision of 4 ppm at the regional scale,and further to derive the CO_2 global and regional fluxes.Progress toward these objectives is reviewed and the first scientific results from TanSat measurements are presented.During the design phase,Observation System Simulation Experiments(OSSE)on TanSat measurements performed prior to launch measurements using a nadir and a glint alternative mode when considering the balance of stable measurements and reduces the flux uncertainty(64%).The constellation measurements of two satellites indicate an extra 10%improvement in flux inversion if the satellite measurements have no bias and similar precision.The TanSat on-orbit test indicates that the instrument is stable and beginning to produce X_(CO_2)products.The preliminary TanSat measurements have been validated with Total Carbon Column Observing Network(TCCON)measurements and have inter-compared with OCO-2 measurements in an overlap measurement.LIU Yi WANG Jing YAO Lu CHEN Xi CAI Zhaonan YANG Dongxu YIN Zengshan GU Songyan TIAN Longfei LU Naimeng L Daren 2018空间科学学报2018,38,5:2
