1Inverse design of digital nanophotonic devices using the adjoint method显示文摘A high-efficiency inverse design of'digital'subwavelength nanophotonic devices using the adjoint method is proposed.We design a single-mode 3dB power divider and a dual-mode demultiplexer to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed inverse design approach,called the digitized adjoint method,for single-and dual-object optimization,respectively.The optimization comprises three stages:1)continuous variation for an'analog'pattern;2)forced permittivity biasing for a'quasi-digital'pattern;and 3)a multilevel digital pattern.Compared with the conventional brute-force method,the proposed method can improve design efficiency by about five times,and the performance optimization can reach approximately the same level.The method takes advantages of adjoint sensitivity analysis and digital subwavelength structure and creates a new way for the efficient and high-performance design of compact digital subwavelength nanophotonic devices,which could overcome the efficiency bottleneck of the brute-force method,which is restricted by the number of pixels of a digital pattern,and improve the device performance by extending a conventional binary pattern to a multilevel one.KAIYUAN WANG XINSHU REN WEIJIE CHANG LONGHUI LU DEMING LIU MINMING ZHANG 2020Photonics Research2020,8,4:7
2Optical meta-waveguides for integrated photonics and beyond显示文摘The growing maturity of nanofabrication has ushered massive sophisticated optical structures available on a photonic chip.The integration of subwavelength-structured metasurfaces and metamaterials on the canonical building block of optical waveguides is gradually reshaping the landscape of photonic integrated circuits,giving rise to numerous metawaveguides with unprecedented strength in controlling guided electromagnetic waves.Here,we review recent advances in meta-structured waveguides that synergize various functional subwavelength photonic architectures with diverse waveguide platforms,such as dielectric or plasmonic waveguides and optical fibers.Foundational results and representative applications are comprehensively summarized.Brief physical models with explicit design tutorials,either physical intuition-based design methods or computer algorithms-based inverse designs,are cataloged as well.We highlight how meta-optics can infuse new degrees of freedom to waveguide-based devices and systems,by enhancing light-matter interaction strength to drastically boost device performance,or offering a versatile designer media for manipulating light in nanoscale to enable novel functionalities.We further discuss current challenges and outline emerging opportunities of this vibrant field for various applications in photonic integrated circuits,biomedical sensing,artificial intelligence and beyond.Yuan Meng Yizhen Chen Longhui Lu Yimin Ding Andrea Cusano Jonathan A.Fan Qiaomu Hu Kaiyuan Wang Zhenwei Xie Zhoutian Liu Yuanmu Yang Qiang Liu Mali Gong Qirong Xiao Shulin Sun Minming Zhang Xiaocong Yuan Xingjie Ni 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,12:6
3Highly sensitive solar-blind deep ultraviolet photodetector based on graphene/PtSe_(2)/β-Ga_(2)O_(3)2D/3D Schottky junction with ultrafast speed显示文摘There is an emerging need for high-sensitivity solar-blind deep ultraviolet(DUV)photodetectors with an ultra-fast response speed.Although nanoscale devices based on Ga_(2)O_(3)nanostructures have been developed,their practical applications are greatly limited by their slow response speed as well as low specific detectivity.Here,the successful fabrication of two-/three-dimensional(2D/3D)graphene(Gr)/PtSe2/β-Ga_(2)O_(3)Schottky junction devices for high-sensitivity solar-blind DUV photodetectors is demonstrated.Benefitting from the high-quality 2D/3D Schottky junction,the vertically stacked structure,and the superior-quality transparent graphene electrode for effective carrier collection,the photodetector is highly sensitive to DUV light illumination and achieves a high responsivity of 76.2 mA/W,a large on/off current ratio of~105,along with an ultra-high ultraviolet(UV)/visible rejection ratio of 1.8×104.More importantly,it has an ultra-fast response time of 12µs and a remarkable specific detectivity of~1013 Jones.Finally,an excellent DUV imaging capability has been identified based on the Gr/PtSe2/β-Ga_(2)O_(3)Schottky junction photodetector,demonstrating its great potential application in DUV imaging systems.Di Wu Zhihui Zhao Wei Lu Lukas Rogée Longhui Zeng Pei Lin Zhifeng Shi Yongtao Tian Xinjian Li Yuen Hong Tsang 2021Nano Research2021,14,6:4

6Identifying Intraspecific Variation in Venom Yield of Chinese Cobra(Naja atra) from Ten Populations in China's Mainland显示文摘Detailed information on venom yield is helpful in preparing antivenoms and treating snakebites, but such information is lacking for many species of venomous snakes. The Chinese cobra(Naja atra) is a large sized, venomous snake commonly found in southeastern China, where it causes a heavy burden of snakebites. To examine the effects of various factors(morphology, sex, age, season, and geographical origin) on the venom yield in this snake, we collected venom samples of 446 individuals(426 adults and 20 neonates) from 10 populations of N. atra over an eightyear period. We used two variables, lyophilized venom mass(venom yield) and solid content of venom(% solids), to quantify the venom yield. We used linear regression analysis to check if venom yield was related to morphological factors, one-way ANOVA and one-way ANCOVA to detect the sexual, ontogenetic, and geographic variation in venom yield, and repeated-measures ANOVA to examine seasonal shifts in venom yield. Our results indicate that venom yield of N. atra is positively related to the morphological traits examined, with male snakes expelling more venom than females. Venom yield in N. atra was age-related, with elder snakes always expelling more venom than younger ones. Geographic variation in venom yield was also observed, while seasonal variation was not. The solid content of venom was lower in males than in females, but this was not related to morphology, season, age, or geography. 9On-chip reconfigurable mode converter based on cross-connected subwavelength Y-junctions显示文摘A novel power-efficient reconfigurable mode converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on cross-connected symmetric Y-junctions assisted by thermo-optic phase shifters on a silicon-on-insulator platform.Instead of using conventional Y-junctions,subwavelength symmetric Y-junctions are utilized to enhance the mode splitting ability.The reconfigurable functionality can be realized by controlling the induced phase differences.Benefited from the cross-connected scheme,the number of heating electrodes can be effectively reduced,while the performance of the device is maintained.With only one-step etching,our fabricated device shows the average insertion losses and cross talks are less than 2.45 and-16.6 d B,respectively,measured with conversions between two arbitrary compositions of the first four TE modes over an observable 60 nm bandwidth.The converter is switchable and CMOS-compatible,and could be extended for more modes;hence,it can be potentially deployed for advanced and flexible mode multiplexing optical networks-on-chip.LONGHUI LU DEMING LIU MAX YAN MINMING ZHANG 2021Photonics Research2021,9,1:0
