Biodiversity and Invasibility: Distribution Patterns of Invasive Plant Species in the Himalayas, Nepal显示文摘Invasive plant species are exerting a serious threat to biological diversity in many regions of the world. To understand plant invasions this study aims to test which of the two plant invasiveness hypotheses; ‘low native diversity' vs. ‘high native diversity', is supported by the regional distribution patterns of invasive plant species in the Himalayas,Nepal. This study is based on data retrieved from published literatures and herbarium specimens. The relationship between invasive plant species distribution patterns and that of native plant species is elucidated by scatter plots, as well as by generalized linear models. The native plant species and invasive plant species have similar distribution patterns and the maximum number of invasive plant species is found in the same altitudinal range where the highest richness for native tree species is found. There is a clear trend of higher invasive plant richness in regions where native tree species richness is relatively high.Consequently, the native plant richness is highest in the central phytogeographic region, followed by the eastern and the western regions, respectively. The invasive plant species also follows a similar trend.Additionally, the invasive plant species richness was positively correlated with anthropogenic factors such as human population density and the number of visiting tourists. This study supports the hypothesis that ‘high native diversity' supports or facilitates invasive plant species. Further, it indicates that nativeand invasive plant species may require similar natural conditions, but that the invasive plant species seem more dependent and influenced by anthropogenic disturbance factors. | BHATTARAI Khem Raj M?REN Inger Elisabeth SUBEDI Suresh Chandra | 2014 | Journal of Mountain Science2014,11,3: | 4
Distribution Pattern of Vascular Plant Species of Mountains in Nepal and their Fate Against Global Warming显示文摘This study aims to find the altitudinal distribution pattern of vascular plant species reported from high mountain of Nepal(Manang) along the whole Himalayan elevation gradient, and evaluate their fate against climate change. Data was gathered from multiple sources, field investigations, literatures, and herbarium specimens. Altogether, 303 vascular plant species were reported from Manang. We used a published data to calculate distribution range of each species by interpolating between its upper and lower elevation limits. The relationship between elevation and species richness is elucidated by generalized linear model. The consequence of global warming upon Manang's vascular plant species was estimated based on projected temperature change for next century and adiabatic lapse rate along the elevation gradient of the Himalayas. The vascular plant species richness has a unimodel relationship with elevation along the whole elevation gradient of Nepal as well as in three biogeographical regions of Nepal. Vascular plants of Manang are found distributed from low land Terai to high alpine regions of Nepal and their elevation distribution range varies from 200 to 4700 m. Out of 303 vascular plants of Manang, only seven species might be affected if temperature increase by 1.5°C, whereas at least 70 species will be affected with 5°C temperature increased. However, the majority of species(233 species) have wider distribution range(> 1000 m) and more than 5°C temperature tolerance range, thus they are likely to be less affected from global warming by the end of 21 st century. | Suresh Chandra SUBEDI Khem Raj BHATTARAI Ram Prasad CHAUUDHARY | 2015 | Journal of Mountain Science2015,12,6: | 3

Wooden stick penetration from the perineal region up to the thorax显示文摘BACKGROUND: Penetrating injuries of the perineum are rare but very dangerous. Since the genitourinary and colorectal organs may be injured, how to evaluate surgical management of the injury is very important.METHODS: The present report presents a case of penetrating injury of the perineum by a wooden stick when the patient fell on the upright wooden stick from a tree. The three feet long stick entered the perineal region just left lateral to the anal opening. Upon reaching the thoracic cavity, it broke and only a foot stick was left in the subcutaneous plane. These injuries are potentially serious with risk of damage to multiple organs. Exploratory laprotomy was done, and bladder injury was repaired. The entry wound and the track of stick was thoroughly washed and allowed for secondary intention healing.RESULTS: The post operative period was uneventful and the patient recovered fully.CONCLUSION: Meticulous evaluation and surgical management of perineal injuries are the key to prevent devastating complications. | Khem Pal Singh Anil Kumar Joshi Mohit Kumar Joshi Chitra Joshi Mridu Singh Vikram Singh | 2015 | World Journal of Emergency Medicine2015,6,4: | 0
Tunneling properties of electromagnetic wave in slab su-perconducting material显示文摘When the electromagnetic wave propagates through a slab superconducting material in microwave ranges, tunneling properties of the electromagnetic wave at critical temperature are investigated theoretically. The transmittance and the reflectance of the slab superconducting material vary with the thickness of material as well as the refractive index of substrates. The high transmittance is found for thin superconductor at low wavelength region. However, optical properties are strongly dependent upon temperature and incidence wavelength. The electromagnetic wave is totally transmitted without loss for incidence wavelength(l = 5000 nm) due to the zero refractive index and infinite penetration depth of the superconductor at the critical temperature. | Khem B.Thapa Sanjay Srivastava Alka Vishwakarma S.P.Ojha | 2011 | Optoelectronics Letters2011,7,4: | 0
Wheat Varietal Investigation for the Hill Region of Nepal显示文摘Multilocation testing of the Coordinated Varietal Trial for Mid-hill and High Hill(CVT-MHH)of wheat genotypes were conducted at different hill research stations of Nepal Agricultural Research Council(NARC)during the normal planting season of 2012-13 and 2013-14.Twenty genotypes including two check varieties were included in Randomized Complete Block(RCB)design with three replications in the experiment.Data on the different yield attributing traits were recorded.Highly significant difference(p<0.01)among the genotypes for the days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, thousand grain weight and grain yield was observed in 2012-13.Wheat genotype BL 4061 had the highest grain yield with 3802 kg/ha followed by NL 1153(3736 kg/ha),NL 1159(3733 kg/ha),NL 1154(3674 kg/ha)and NL 1156(3462 kg/ha).In 2013-14 also a highly significant difference among the genotypes for all the recorded traits was observed and these genotypes were stable for the yield and yield attributing traits. The most promising genotype for the grain yield was NL 1153(5816 kg/ha)followed by NL 1178(5760 kg/ha),NL 1156(5454 kg/ha),NL 1159(5259 kg/ha)and NL 1179(5075 kg/ha).From the yield and other yield attributing trait wheat genotypes NL 1055,NL 1153,NL 1159,NL 1156 and NL 1179 need to be tested under farmers’field for further confirmation and release as variety. | Deepak Pandey Nutan Raj Gautam Khem Raj Pant Dhruba Bahadur Thapa | 2020 | NASS Journal of Agricultural Sciences2020,2,2: | 0
Threats of Zika virus transmission for Asia and its Hindu-Kush Himalayan region显示文摘Asia and its Hindu Kush Himalayan(HKH)region is particularly vulnerable to environmental change, especially climate and land use changes further influenced by rapid population growth, high level of poverty and unsustainable development.Asia has been a hotspot of dengue fever and chikungunya mainly due to its dense human population, unplanned urbanization and poverty. In an urban cycle, dengue virus(DENV)and chikungunya virus(CHIKV)are transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Ae.albopictus mosquitoes which are also competent vectors of Zika virus(ZIKV).Over the last decade,DENV and CHIKV transmissions by Ae.aegypti have extended to the Himalayan countries of Bhutan and Nepal and ZIKV could follow in the footsteps of these viruses in the HKH region. The already established distribution of human-biting Aedes mosquito vectors and a naïve population with lack of immunity against ZIKV places the HKH region at a higher risk of ZIKV.Some of the countries in the HKH region have already reported ZIKV cases. We have documented an increasing threat of ZIKV in Asia and its HKH region because of the high abundance and wide distribution of human-biting mosquito vectors, climate change, poverty, report of indigenous cases in the region, increasing numbers of imported cases and a naïve population with lack of immunity against ZIKV.An outbreak anywhere is potentially a threat everywhere. Therefore,in order to ensure international health security, all efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to ZIKV ought to be intensified now in Asia and its HKH region. To prepare for possible ZIKV outbreaks,Asia and the HKH region can also learn from the success stories and strategies adopted by other regions and countries in preventing ZIKV and associated complications. The future control strategies for DENV,CHIKV and ZIKV should be considered in tandem with the threat to human well-being that is posed by other emerging and re-emerging vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, and by the continuing urgent need to strengthen public primary healthcare systems in the region. | Meghnath Dhimal Sushma Dahal Mandira Lamichhane Dhimal Shiva Raj Mishra Khem BKarki Krishna Kumar Aryal Ubydul Haque Md Iqbal Kabir Pradeep Guin Azeem Mehmood Butt Harapan Harapan Qi-Yong Liu Cordia Chu Doreen Montag David Alexander Groneberg Basu Dev Pandey Ulrich Kuch Ruth Muller | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 0
Neurocysticercosis in Nepal:a retrospective clinical analysis显示文摘Aim:The prevalence of epilepsy is higher in Nepal. This study was conducted to analyze the clinical manifestations of neurocysticercosis(NCC)among seizure patients admitted to our center. Methods:We retrospectively studied all the NCC patients admitted to Neurology Department,Bir Hospital,Kathmandu,Nepal from April 2012 to February 2014.Computer tomography/magnetic resonance imaging(CT/MRI)head,clinical profile, lab investigations and exclusion of other causes were the basis of the NCC diagnosis.Chi-square and Student’s t-test were used for comparison of variables. Results:Out of 131 seizure patients admitted,21 patients were diagnosed with NCC[mean age:33.95±16.41;male:15(71.4%),female:6(28.6%)].Generalized tonic clonic seizure was the most common seizure type in NCC patients(18 patients;85.7%),two of them had status epilepticus during presentation in Emergency Department.Three patients had focal seizure, one with epilepsia partialis continua.Neuroimaging showed multiple NCC lesions in 8(38.1%)and a single NCC lesion in 13(61.9%)patients.Seven of them(33.3%)sought traditional healers before being presented to our center.Eight patients(38.1%)were treated with antiepileptics in local health-post without neuroimaging studies done.Calcified stage of NCC was the most frequent CT/MRI findings(12 patients;57.1%).Phenytoin was preferred both by physicians and patients due to its low cost. Conclusion:NCC is a common finding among seizure patients in Nepal.Poor economic status, illiteracy and underdeveloped rural society are the major challenges in prevention and treatment of NCC. | Rajeev Ojha Dinesh Bikram Shah Amina Shrestha Sunil Koirala Apurba Dahal Khem Adhikari Anjal Bisht Pratik Wagle | 2015 | Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation2015,2,1: | 0
