| 1 | Transport model for shale gas well leakage through the surrounding fractured zones of a longwall mine显示文摘The environmental risks associated with casing deformation in unconventional(shale)gas wells positioned in abutment pillars of longwall mines is a concern to many in the mining and gas well industry.With the recent interest in shale exploration and the proximity to longwall mining in Southwestern Pennsylvania,the risk to mine workers could be catastrophic as fractures in surrounding strata create pathways for transport of leaked gases.Hence,this research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH)presents an analytical model of the gas transport through fractures in a low permeable stratum.The derived equations are used to conduct parametric studies of specific transport conditions to understand the influence of stratum geology,fracture lengths,and the leaked gas properties on subsurface transport.The results indicated that the prediction that the subsurface gas flux decreases with an increase in fracture length is specifically for a non-gassy stratum.The sub-transport trend could be significantly impacted by the stratum gas generation rate within specific fracture lengths,which emphasized the importance of the stratum geology.These findings provide new insights for improved understanding of subsurface gas transport to ensure mine safety. | Kayode M.Ajayi Steven J.Schatzel | 2020 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,5: | 5 |
| 2 | A Wavelet Neural Network Based Non-linear Model Predictive Controller for a Multi-variable Coupled Tank System显示文摘In this paper, a novel real time non-linear model predictive controller(NMPC) for a multi-variable coupled tank system(CTS) is designed. CTSs are highly non-linear and can be found in many industrial process applications. The involvement of multi-input multi-output(MIMO) system makes the design of an effective controller a challenging task. MIMO systems have inherent couplings,interactions in-between the process input-output variables and generally have an complex internal structure. The aim of this paper is to design, simulate, and implement a novel real time constrained NMPC for a multi-variable CTS with the aid of intelligent system techniques. There are two major formidable challenges hindering the success of the implementation of a NMPC strategy in the MIMO case. The first is the difficulty of obtaining a good non-linear model by training a non-convex complex network to avoid being trapped in a local minimum solution. The second is the online real time optimisation(RTO) of the manipulated variable at every sampling time.A novel wavelet neural network(WNN) with high predicting precision and time-frequency localisation characteristic was selected for an MIMO model and a fast stochastic wavelet gradient algorithm was used for initial training of the network. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm was used to obtain the optimised parameters of the WNN as well as the RTO during the NMPC strategy. The proposed strategy performed well in both simulation and real time on an MIMO CTS. The results indicated that WNN provided better trajectory regulation with less mean-squared-error and average control energy compared to an artificial neural network. | 3 | Computer applications for selecting operating parameters of stationary grain crop thresher显示文摘In this study,various operating parameters influencing performance of stationary grain crop threshers were established.These parameters were deduced from the established analytical models describing the underlying principles for the crop characteristics and machine variables as factors influencing the overall machine performance of a stationary multi-crop thresher.A computer programme written in Visual Basic was used to select optimum operating performance of the threshing process in a stationary tooth–peg grain crop thresher.An IITA-popularized stationary multi-crop thresher was used to test the practical feasibility of the computer based output of the threshing process.A split–split–unit statistical design was used for data collection.The data collected were analyzed using the GENSTAT 5 statistical package with its computer programme.The results showed that graphs of data from measured thresher performance indices against the predicted data for all the established models indicated high correlation between the models and the measured data at p≤5%significance level.The minimum energy requirements for detachment of sorghum and rice were observed at the threshing cylinder speed of 500 r/min(10.5 m/s)and 615 r/min(13.0 m/s),respectively.The combination of the threshing cylinder speed of 500 r/min(10.5 m/s)and 615 r/min(13.0 m/s)at crop moisture content of 12.8%and 16.2%indicated optimum threshing conditions for sorghum and rice,respectively. | Joshua Olanrewaju Olaoye Kayode C Oni Mary M Olaoye | 2010 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2010,3,3: | 3 |
| 4 | Numerical investigation of the effectiveness of radon control measures in cave mines显示文摘Ventilation is one of the radon control measures in an underground working environment.However,the dynamics related to the cave mining methods particularly in block/panel cave mines,complicate the design of effective ventilation system,and implementation.Events such as hang ups(in the drawbells),leakage from old workings,and changes in cave porosity lead to differing response of an existing ventilation designs.However,it is difficult to investigate these conditions at the mine or with a laboratory scale study.Therefore,this study develops a discrete model to investigate the impact of different radon control measures in cave mines using computational fluid dynamics techniques.We considered two ventilation conditions for a fully developed cave:with and without the undercut ventilation.For each of the two conditions,we studied four parameters:airflow distribution through the production drifts,radon distribution through the production drifts,the effect of increasing airflow on radon concentration,and the effect of a cave top negative pressure on radon distribution.The results show that:the undercut ventilation significantly increases the radon concentration in the production drift;the growth of radon concentration through the production drift is nonlinear(oscillating pattern);maintaining a negative pressure on top of the cave is more effective at mitigating radon exposure,when the undercut ventilation is active;and increase in air volume flow rate decreases radon concentration in most regions,however,there might be regions with significant radon accumulation due to pressure variation across the drifts.These findings provide vital information for designing an effective ventilation system and for proactive implementation of radon control measures in cave mines. | Kayode Ajayi Khosro Shahbazi Purushotham Tukkaraja Kurt Katzenstein | 2019 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2019,29,3: | 3 |

| 6 | The biomedical significance of the phytochemical, proximate and mineral compositions of the leaf, stem bark and root of Jatropha curcas显示文摘Objective: To analyse the phytochemical contents of leaf, stem bark and root of Jatropha curcas(J. curcas) in four solvent extracts and their proximate and mineral compositions. Methods: Standard analytical procedures were used for the determination of phytochemicals, proximate and mineral compositions of the leaf, stem bark and root extracts of J. curcas. Results: Results of the analysis showed the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, saponins, terpenoids, steroids, triterpenoid saponins, carotenoids, phlobatannins and tannins in the leaf, stem bark and root of all the solvent extracts. Flavonoids were present in the highest amount in the ethyl acetate extracts of the leaf(7.35% ± 0.02%), stem bark(4.12% ± 0.01%) and root(3.35% ± 0.02%) followed by polyphenols in the methanol extracts of leaf(4.62% ± 0.02%), stem bark(2.77% ± 0.05%) and root(2.49% ± 0.02%). Poly-acetylated compounds were absent in all the solvent extracts of the leaf, stem bark and root. However, some anti-nutritional agents such as oxalates, phytates and cyanates were present in all the solvent extracts of the leaf, stem bark and root except the ethyl acetate. Phytates were high in the aqueous solvent of the leaf(6.12% ± 0.00%) but low in the stem bark(1.00% ± 0.05%) and root(0.89% ± 0.03%). Proximate composition showed appreciable amounts of total carbohydrate(36.33% ± 0.72%), crude protein(26.00% ± 0.47%) and reducing sugars(5.87% ± 0.14%) in the leaf, while crude fat was more in the stem bark(16.70% ± 0.30%). There was corresponding substantial energy in the leaf [(1 514.77 ± 20.87) kJ /100 g] and stem bark [(907.00 ± 8.52) kJ /100 g]. Moisture and ash contents of the leaf, stem bark and root were within acceptable limits for the use in drugs formulation. The mineral composition showed substantial amounts of important elements such as Fe, Ca, Na, Mg and Zn. Others were P, K and Se. | 19 | Parquetina nigrescens leaves: chemical profile and influence on the physical and biochemical indices of sexual activity of male Wistar rats显示文摘OBJECTIVE: The leaves of Parquetina nigrescens have been claimed in folk medicine to be useful for managing sexual dysfunction, but there is inadequate scientific evidence for this claim. This investigation was conducted to assess the effects of aqueous leaf extract of Parquetina nigrescens(AEPN) in rats induced with sexual dysfunction.METHODS: Male rats were allocated into various groups after being induced into sexual dysfunction with paroxetine hydrochloride. The groups were treated with distilled water, PowMaxM(reference drug),and the AEPN at 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg body weight(BW) respectively for 7 d. Frequencies of mount(MF), intromission(IF), ejaculation(EF), as well as latencies of mount(ML), intromission(IL) and post-ejaculatory interval(PEI) were progressively monitored with receptive female rats on days 1, 3 and 7.The precentage of mounted, intromitted, and ejaculated rats, intromission ratio(IR),copulatory efficiency(CE) and intercopulatory interval(ICI) were also computed. Standard methods were employed to determine the levels of serum luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormones(LH and FSH), testosterone,nitric oxide(NO) and the activity of phosphodiesterase V(PDE5).RESULTS: The plant contained alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, steroids, tannins,phlobatannins, cardenolides, phenolics, anthraquinones and triterpenes with alkaloids(2.32 mg/g)occurring in greatest quantity while flavonoids, anthraquinones and cardenolides(0.01 mg/g, each) were the least. All the 20 standard amino acids were detected in the plant leaf, with the lowest concentration being 0.30 mg/g for methionine and the highest being 2.12 mg/g for cysteine. Furthermore, P. nigrescens leaves contained Na, K, Fe, Mg, Zn, Ca, Cu, Mn, P, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Co, with Fe present in the highest and Co the lowest concentrations. Paroxetine significantly(P<0.05) reduced MF, IF, EF, percentage mounted, intromitted, ejaculated, IR, CE, serum testosterone, LH, FSH and NO, while ML, IL, PEI, IF and PDE5 were significantly(P<0.05) increased and/or prolonged. The AEPN significantly reversed these paroxetine-treatment-related alterations with most profound activity at the highest dose of 80 mg/kg BW, similar to that of the PowMaxM-treated animals.CONCLUSION: The AEPN restored both the physical and biochemical indices of male sexual activity/competence via changes in reproductive hormones, NO and PDE5 activity.
