1Assessing genetic diversity and structure of fragmented populations of eastern white pine(Pinus strobus)and western white pine(P.monticola)for conservation management显示文摘Aims Many pine populations in Canada have fragmented distributions resulting from the effects of glaciations,overharvesting and white pine blister rust infections.Forest fragmentation can modify gene flow and reduce genetic diversity.Selective logging can reduce the density of trees,thereby altering mating patterns and increasing inbreeding.The hypothesis of the present study is that forest fragmentation will not increase inbreeding and will have no effect on genetic diversity parameters in the Canadian Pinus moniticola and P.strobus populations targeted because of(i)the long life span of the pine species,(ii)outbreeding and self-incompatibility of P.monticola and P.strobus and(iii)wind pollination resulting in high gene flow among populations.We studied the genetic diversity of P.strobus across its range in Canada,and we completed a detailed analysis of the genetic structure of P.monticola populations from western Canada using microsatellites genetic markers.Methods Seed samples from 10 P.monticola populations and 10 P.strobus populations were collected from western and eastern Canada,respectively.The mother trees included in seed lots were representative of each stand.Genomic DNA extracted from each sample was amplified with microsatellite primers.The intra-and interpopulation genetic diversity parameters were assessed using Popgene and Genepop softwares and the genetic distances among populations within each species using the PowerMarker software.Melanie Mehes Kabwe K.Nkongolo Paul Michael 2009Journal of Plant Ecology2009,2,3:5
2Velocity of detonation measurement and fragmentation analysis to evaluate blasting efficacy显示文摘In holes, the measurement of the velocity of detonation(VOD) helps in comparing and evaluating relative performance of explosives. In this paper a blast performance assessment was conducted based on the results obtained from the steady state VOD measurement of emulsion explosives HEF100 and degree of blast fragmentation conducted on an open pit blast. The aim of this study was to compare the steady state VOD measured in the field and the published VOD of HEF100 under ideal laboratory conditions and ascertain its efficacy. In the trial, a resistance wire continuous VOD measurement system connected to a SpeedVOD was employed to measure and record the steady state VOD values from five different blast holes. Furthermore, a post fragmentation analysis was conducted using the existing fragmentation models and an image processing software. The steady state VOD values recorded from the field ranged between 4981 m/s to 5387 m/s consistent with the published VOD subjected to ideal laboratory conditions and the analyzed fragmentation size distribution indicates that 90% of the blasted muck pile was within the allowable and optimal 700 mm passing size.Eugie Kabwe 2018Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2018,10,3:3
3Confining stress effect on the elastoplastic ground reaction considering the Lode angle dependence显示文摘The convergence confinement methods are solutions employed to estimate convergence in circular tunnels. They are mostly based on constitutive equations governed by the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown yield criteria. However, the solutions based on these criteria neglect the intermediate principal stress confining effect on the ground reaction estimation. Therefore, in this paper, a Drucker-Prager yield criterion governed solution integrated with the Lode angle parameter is employed. It considers the intermediate principal stress influence and the critical effect of the parameter on failure characterization.Subsequently, it is verified with results attained from numerical simulations which consider an elasticperfectly plastic constitutive law with a non-associative flow rule within FLAC3D. It was drawn from the results that the ground reaction and plastic evolution are influenced by the confining stress.Furthermore, considering a suitable yield criterion leads to realistic convergence and plastic evolution estimation. The circumscribed DP criterion governed solution with Lode angle parameter value(0.8) is considered appropriate for the realistic ground reaction estimation in the three-dimensional(3D) stress state rock mass. It estimates approximately 3.4% of tunnel convergence as compared to the classic solutions(5%) and plastic radius estimated to be approximately 2.45 m compared to 2.84 m.Eugie Kabwe 2020International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,3:2
