| 1 | Global warming, human-induced carbon emissions, and their uncertainties显示文摘In recent decades, there have been a number of debates on climate warming and its driving forces. Based on an extensive literature review, we suggest that (1) climate warming occurs with great uncertainty in the magnitude of the temperature increase; (2) both human activities and natural forces contribute to climate change, but their relative contributions are difficult to quantify; and (3) the dominant role of the increase in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases (including CO 2 ) in the global warming claimed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is questioned by the scientific communities because of large uncertainties in the mechanisms of natural factors and anthropogenic activities and in the sources of the increased atmospheric CO 2 concentration. | 2 | Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality显示文摘Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink(referred to as terrestrial C sink) is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality target.To better understand the characteristics of terrestrial C sinks and their contribution to carbon neutrality,this review summarizes major progress in terrestrial C budget researches during the past decades,clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks in China and around the world,and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality target.According to recent studies,the global terrestrial C sink has been increasing from a source of (-0.2±0.9) Pg C yr^(-1)(1 Pg=1015g)in the 1960s to a sink of (1.9±1.1) Pg C yr^(-1) in the 2010s.By synthesizing the published data,we estimate terrestrial C sink of 0.20–0.25 Pg C yr^(-1) in China during the past decades,and predict it to be 0.15–0.52 Pg C yr^(-1) by 2060.The terrestrial C sinks are mainly located in the mid-and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere,while tropical regions act as a weak C sink or source.The C balance differs much among ecosystem types:forest is the major C sink;shrubland,wetland and farmland soil act as C sinks;and whether the grassland functions as C sink or source remains unclear.Desert might be a C sink,but the magnitude and the associated mechanisms are still controversial.Elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentration,nitrogen deposition,climate change,and land cover change are the main drivers of terrestrial C sinks,while other factors such as fires and aerosols would also affect ecosystem C balance.The driving factors of terrestrial C sink differ among regions.Elevated CO_(2) concentration and climate change are major drivers of the C sinks in North America and Europe,while afforestation and ecological restoration are additionally important forcing factors of terrestrial C sinks in China.For future studies,we recommend the necessity for intensive and long-term ecosystem C monitoring over broad geographic scale to improve terrestrial biosphere models for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics under various climate change and policy scenarios. | Yuanhe Yang Yue Shi Wenjuan Sun Jinfeng Chang Jianxiao Zhu Leiyi Chen Xin Wang Yanpei Guo Hongtu Zhang Lingfei Yu Shuqing Zhao Kang Xu Jiangling Zhu Haihua Shen Yuanyuan Wang Yunfeng Peng Xia Zhao Xiangping Wang Huifeng Hu Shiping Chen Mei Huang Xuefa Wen Shaopeng Wang Biao Zhu Shuli Niu Zhiyao Tang Lingli Liu Jingyun Fang | 2022 | Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5: | 32 |
| 3 | Association of gene polymorphisms of tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-13 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Han nationality in Beijing显示文摘Background Genetic factors are believed to play a role in the individual susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) has been reported but inconsistent results may arise from different populations and phenotypes of COPD. There are only a few published studies of interleukin-13 (IL-13) SNPs on COPD. The SNPs of TNF-α and IL-13 have not been studied in the Chinese population. This research was conducted to study the frequencies of IL-13 gene promoter 1055 (IL-13-1055) and TNF-α gene-308 polymorphisms in the patients with COPD and to investigate the effect of those genetic polymorphisms on COPD in the Chinese population.Methods A cohort of COPD patients and age matched controls were recruited from an inpatient hospital service in Beijing. Venous blood was obtained and genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood monocytes using standard method. Genomic DNA was used as a template for amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to determine the polymorphism at -1055 in the IL-13 gene promoter region. PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was used to determine polymorphisms in the TNF-α gene-308 position. The products were investigated by sequence analysis also. Results One hundred and eleven COPD patients and 97 controls were studied. Seventy-five cases were current smokers in COPD patients and 36 were current smokers in controls. The frequencies of TT genotype in the IL-13 gene promoter region were 11.7% (13/111) in the COPD group and 13.4% (13/97) in the controls (P=0.713). However, the OR value of TT genotype was significantly increased to 6.4 (95% CI 1.62-25.39) in the smokers with COPD. TT genotype was also positively related to family history of COPD, OR=7.7 (95% CI 1.37-43.80). The frequencies of A allele in the TNF-α gene were 5.9% in COPD and 3.1% in controls (P=0.131). The OR value of A allele was 5.0 (95% CI 1.011 to 25.059) in smokers with COPD. Conclusions There is no significant difference in the frequencies of the TT genotype of IL-13-1055 or the A allele of the TNF-α between Han Chinese patients with COPD versus control. Thus, it does not appear that theseSNPs are independent factors in COPD for Han nationality in (Beijing. | 4 | A nowcasting model for the prediction of typhoon tracks based on a long short term memory neural network显示文摘It is of vital importance to reduce injuries and economic losses by accurate forecasts of typhoon tracks. A huge amount of typhoon observations have been accumulated by the meteorological department, however, they are yet to be adequately utilized. It is an effective method to employ machine learning to perform forecasts. A long short term memory(LSTM) neural network is trained based on the typhoon observations during 1949–2011 in China's Mainland, combined with big data and data mining technologies, and a forecast model based on machine learning for the prediction of typhoon tracks is developed. | 5 | Changes in China’s lakes: climate and human impacts显示文摘Lakes have played a critical role in providing water and ecosystem services for people and other organisms in China for millennia.However,accelerating climate change and economic boom have resulted in unprecedented changes in these valuable lakes.Using Landsat images covering the entity of the country,we explored the changes in China’s lakes and the associated driving forces over the last 30 years(i.e.mid-1980 s to 2015).We discovered that China’s lakes have changed with divergent regional trends:in the sparsely populated Tibetan Plateau,lakes are abundant and the lake area has increased dramatically from 38596 to46831 km^2(i.e.increased by 8235 km^2,or 21.3%),whereas,in the densely populated northern and eastern regions,lakes are relatively scarce and the lake area has decreased from 36659 to 33657 km^2(i.e.decreased by 3002 km^2,or 8.2%).In particular,severe lake decreases occurred in the Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau and the Eastern Plain(-2151 km^2).Statistical analyses indicated that climate was the most important factor controlling lake changes in the Tibetan Plateau,the Yun-Gui Plateau and the Northeast Plain.However,the strength of climatic control on lake changes was low in the Eastern Plain and the Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau,where human activities,e.g.impoldering,irrigation and mining,have caused serious impacts on lakes.Further lake changes will exacerbate regional imbalances between lake resources and population distribution,and thus may increase the risk of water-resource crises in China. | Shengli Tao Jingyun Fang Suhui Ma Qiong Cai Xinyu Xiong Di Tian Xia Zhao Leqi Fang Heng Zhang Jiangling Zhu Shuqing Zhao | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,1: | 14 |
| 6 | Mapping QTL for Heat-Tolerance at Grain Filling Stage in Rice显示文摘A mapping population of 98 lines (backcross inbred lines, BILs) derived from a backcross of Nipponbare/Kasalath//Nipponbare was planted at two experimental sites, Nanjing and Nanchang, and treated with high and optimal temperature during grain filling, respectively. The grain weight heat susceptibility index [GWHSI= (grain weight at optimum temperature-grain weight at high temperature) / grain weight at optimum temperature × 100] was employed to evaluate the tolerance of rice to heat stress. A genetic linkage map with 245 RFLP markers and a mixed linear-model approach was used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and their main effects, epistatic interactions and QTL × environment interactions (Q× E). The threshold of LOD score=2.0 was used to detect the significance of association between marker and trait. A total of 3 QTLs controlling heat tolerance during grain filling were detected, on chromosomes 1, 4 and 7, with LOD scores of 8.16, 11.08 and 12.86, respectively, and they explained the phenotypic variance of 8.94, 17.25 and 13.50 %, correspondingly. The QTL located in the C1100-R1783 region of chromosome 4 showed no QTL × environment interaction and epistatic effect, suggesting that it could be stably expressed in different environments and genetic backgrounds, and thus it would be valuable in rice breeding for heat tolerance improvement. This QTL allele, derived from Kasalath reduced 3.31% of the grain weight loss under heat stress. One located between R1613-C970 on chromosome 1 and the other between C1226-R1440 on chromosome 7, with additive effect 2.38 and 2.92%, respectively. The tolerance alleles of both these QTLs were derived from Nipponbare. Both of these QTLs had significant QTL × environment interactions, and the latter was involved in epistatic interaction also. Eight pairs of epistatic effect QTLs were detected, one pair each on chromosomes 1,2, 3, 5, 7,8, 10 and 12. | 8 | Study on heterosis of inter-subspecies between indica and japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) using chromosome segment substitution lines显示文摘Heterosis for yield and its component traits between chromosome segments from IR24, an indica variety, and the counterparts from 02428, a japonica rice, was inves- tigated by using a hybrid F1 population composed of 63 com- binations between 02428 and IR24 chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) with the genetic background of Asominori, a japonica variety. Significant differences in het- erosis for yield and yield-component traits were observed among the crosses. Analysis of graphical genotyping showed that 14 substituted segments were responsible for yield het- erosis. All of them were from all the 12 chromosomes of IR24 except chromosomes 8 and 10. Six segments at the intervals of RFLP markers, such as X132—G1340—R459, X48— C393A, R288—R1854, R2918—X52, X257—C1350 and R367 —X189-2—X24-2 on chromosomes 2, 3, 4, 11 and 12 respec- tively, had very significant heterosis for yield at the level of P ≤0.005 based on t-test, individually increasing the hybrid yield by more than 35% compared with the control cross “Asominori×02428”. Most of IR24 chromosome segments were found to have no significant hybrid effect for yield and yield-component traits, and one segment located at R2171 on chromosome 6 possessed significant negative effect with 27% of yield decrease. | 10 | Scenario analysis on the global carbon emissions reduction goal proposed in the declaration of the 2009 G8 Summit显示文摘A goal of a 50% reduction in global greenhouse gases emissions by 2050, with an 80% reduction by developed countries (hereafter referred to as the G8 Goal), was proposed at the G8 Summit held in L’Aquila, Italy, in July 2009. Here we analyze the scientific and political implications of the G8 Goal and its equity and feasibility by examining four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Our results show that (1) the goal to keep atmospheric CO2 concentration of <450 ppmv, stated by G8 nations, can only be achieved under the scenario of a steady, linear emissions reduction by all countries and simultaneously meeting the G8 Goal during the period 2005-2050; (2) under the G8 Goal, the carbon emissions quota for developing countries would not meet their carbon emission demands even if very strict reduction regimes are followed, with a gap of up to >1/3 of emissions demand in the next 45 years; and (3) under the G8 Goal, the cumulative per capita emissions during the period of 2006-2050 for developed and developing countries will be 81 t C and 40-47 t C, respectively, with the former doubling that of the latter, implying that the historical disparity of carbon emissions between developed and developing countries would be widened. Historically, the cumulative per capita emissions from developed countries are 12 times of those from developing countries. We therefore conclude that (1) the G8 Goal seeks to impose binding reduction targets on developing countries that will impede their industrialization process and cause conflicts among developing countries in the allocation of carbon emission rights; (2) the G8 Goal will not only widen the existing disparities of historical carbon emissions between developed and developing countries, but also generate new inequalities in the rights of carbon emissions; and (3) the 450 ppmv threshold of atmospheric CO2 concentration control, which is the basis for the G8 Goal, is impractical and impossible, and should not be accepted as the foundation for international climate negotiation on carbon emission reduction. | 11 | Verification of an operational ocean circulation-surface wave coupled forecasting system for the China's seas显示文摘An operational ocean circulation-surface wave coupled forecasting system for the seas off China and adjacent areas(OCFS-C) is developed based on parallelized circulation and wave models. It has been in operation since November 1, 2007. In this paper we comprehensively present the simulation and verification of the system, whose distinguishing feature is that the wave-induced mixing is coupled in the circulation model. In particular, with nested technique the resolution in the China's seas has been updated to(1/24)° from the global model with(1/2)°resolution. Besides, daily remote sensing sea surface temperature(SST) data have been assimilated into the model to generate a hot restart field for OCFS-C. Moreover, inter-comparisons between forecasting and independent observational data are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of OCFS-C in upper-ocean quantities predictions, including SST, mixed layer depth(MLD) and subsurface temperature. Except in conventional statistical metrics, non-dimensional skill scores(SS) is also used to evaluate forecast skill. Observations from buoys and Argo profiles are used for lead time and real time validations, which give a large SS value(more than 0.90). Besides, prediction skill for the seasonal variation of SST is confirmed. Comparisons of subsurface temperatures with Argo profiles data indicate that OCFS-C has low skill in predicting subsurface temperatures between 100 m and 150 m. Nevertheless, inter-comparisons of MLD reveal that the MLD from model is shallower than that from Argo profiles by about 12 m, i.e., OCFS-C is successful and steady in MLD predictions. | 12 | Assimilation of High Frequency Radar Data into a Shelf Sea Circulation Model显示文摘High Frequency(HF) radar current data is assimilated into a shelf sea circulation model based on optimal interpolation(OI) method. The purpose of this work is to develop a real-time computationally highly efficient assimilation method to improve the forecast of shelf current. Since the true state of the ocean is not known, the specification of background error covariance is arduous. Usually, it is assumed or calculated from an ensemble of model states and is kept in constant. In our method, the spatial covariances of model forecast errors are derived from differences between the adjacent model forecast fields, which serve as the forecast tendencies. The assumption behind this is that forecast errors can resemble forecast tendencies, since variances are large when fields change quickly and small when fields change slowly. The implementation of HF radar data assimilation is found to yield good information for analyses. After assimilation, the root-mean-square error of model decreases significantly. Besides, three assimilation runs with variational observation density are implemented. The comparison of them indicates that the pattern described by observations is much more important than the amount of observations. It is more useful to expand the scope of observations than to increase the spatial interval. | 13 | Patterns and determinants of wood physical and mechanical properties across major tree species in China显示文摘The physical and mechanical properties of wood affect the growth and development of trees, and also act as the main criteria when determining wood usage. Our understanding on patterns and controls of wood physical and mechanical properties could provide benefits for forestry management and bases for wood application and forest tree breeding. However, current studies on wood properties mainly focus on wood density and ignore other wood physical properties. In this study, we established a comprehensive database of wood physical properties across major tree species in China. Based on this database, we explored spatial patterns and driving factors of wood properties across major tree species in China. | 16 | The relationships among structure variables of larch forests in China显示文摘Background:Larch(Larix Mill.)forests are widely distributed in the upper parts of mountainous areas in China,playing vital roles in constructing mountain landscapes and maintaining mountain environments.Despite their importance,our knowledges on the large-scale patterns of structure characteristics and the relationships between different structure variables are unclear.In this paper,we investigated 155 plots from 11 natural larch forest types across the country to explore the biogeographic patterns of the structure characteristics and the allometric relationships between different structure variables for Chinese larch forests.Results:The structure characteristics were significantly different among larch forest types.For different larch forest types,the power function fits the relationships between tree height and diameter at breast height(DBH),average DBH and stem density,and taper and stem density well,but with different exponents among larch forest types.The power exponents of the allometric relationships between tree height and DBH for different larch forest types varied from 0.61 to 0.93(mean=0.86)by standard major axis regression(SMA),and from 0.51 to 0.78(mean=0.56)by ordinary least square regression(OLS).The 50%,75%and 95%quantile regression(QR)and OLS indicated that the average DBH and taper of the L.gmelinii forests,L.gmelinii var.principis-rupprechtii forests,and L.sibirica forests were significantly correlated with stem density.Conclusions:The relationship between tree height and DBH showed a power function relationship for all larch forest types in China,but with different exponents.Overall,stem density was negatively correlated with average DBH and taper.The Sect.Larix forests exhibited stand density effect.Our findings provide an important basis for recognizing the biogeographic patterns of structure factors and for the management of larch forests in China. | Wenjing Fang Qing Zhao Qiong Cai Anwar Eziz Guoping Chen Yuhao Feng Heng Zhang Jiangling Zhu Chengjun Ji Zhiyao Tang Jingyun Fang | 2020 | Forest Ecosystems2020,7,4: | 2 |
| 17 | Generating Giant Membrane Vesicles from Live Cells with Preserved Cellular Properties显示文摘Biomimetic giant membrane vesicles,with size and lipid compositions comparable to cells,have been recognized as an attractive experimental alternative to living systems.Due to the similarity of their membrane structure to that of body cells,cell-derived giant plasma membrane vesicles have been used as a membrane model for studying lipid/protein behavior of plasma membranes.However,further application of biomimetic giant membrane vesicles has been hampered by the side-efects of chemical vesiculants and the utilization of osmotic bufer.We herein develop a facile strategy to derive giant membrane vesicles(GMVs)from mammalian cells in biofriendly medium with high yields.Tese GMVs preserve membrane properties and adaptability for surface modifcation and encapsulation of exogenous molecules,which would facilitate their potential biological applications.Moreover,by loading GMVs with therapeutic drugs,GMVs could be employed for drug transport to tumor cells,which represents another step forward in the biomedical application of giant membrane vesicles.Tis study highlights biocompatible GMVs with biomimicking membrane surface properties and adaptability as an ideal platform for drug delivery strategies with potential clinical applications. | Qiaoling Liu Cheng Bi Jiangling Li Xuejiao Liu Ruizi Peng Cheng Jin Yang Sun Yifan Lyu Hui Liu Huijing Wang Can Luo Weihong Tan | 2019 | Research2019,,1: | 2 |
