| 1 | Rheumatoid arthritis: pathological mechanisms and modern pharmacologic therapies显示文摘Rheumatoid arthritis(RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the lining of the synovial joints and is associated with progressive disability, premature death, and socioeconomic burdens. A better understanding of how the pathological mechanisms drive the deterioration of RA progress in individuals is urgently required in order to develop therapies that will effectively treat patients at each stage of the disease progress. Here we dissect the etiology and pathology at specific stages:(i) triggering,(ii) maturation,(iii) targeting, and(iv) fulminant stage, concomitant with hyperplastic synovium, cartilage damage, bone erosion, and systemic consequences. Modern pharmacologic therapies(including conventional, biological, and novel potential small molecule disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) remain the mainstay of RA treatment and there has been significant progress toward achieving disease remission without joint deformity. Despite this, a significant proportion of RA patients do not effectively respond to the current therapies and thus new drugs are urgently required. | 3 | 3D graphene foam-supported cobalt phosphate and borate electrocatalysts for high-efficiency water oxidation显示文摘The cobalt phosphate-/cobalt borate-based oxygen-evolving catalysts(OECs) are the important class of earth-abundant electrocatalysts that can operate with high activity for water splitting under benign conditions.This article reports the integration of cobalt phosphate(CoPi) and cobalt borate(Co-Bi) OECs with three-dimensional(3D) graphene foam(GF) for the electrocatalytic water oxidation reaction. The GF showed a unique advantage to serve as a highly conductive 3D support with large capacity for anchoring and loading Co-OECs, thereby facilitating mass and charge transfer due to the large amount of active sites provided by the 3D graphene scaffold. As a result, this integrated system of GF and Co-OECs exhibits synergistically enhanced catalytic activity. The overpotential(g) of Co-Pi and Co-Bi/graphene catalysts is about 0.390 and0.315 V in neutral solutions, respectively. | 4 | Current research on pharmacologic and regenerative therapies for osteoarthritis显示文摘Osteoarthritis(OA)is a degenerative joint disorder commonly encountered in clinical practice,and is the leading cause of disability in elderly people.Due to the poor self-healing capacity of articular cartilage and lack of specific diagnostic biomarkers,OA is a challenging disease with limited treatment options.Traditional pharmacologic therapies such as acetaminophen,non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,and opioids are effective in relieving pain but are incapable of reversing cartilage damage and are frequently associated with adverse events.Current research focuses on the development of new OA drugs(such as sprifermin/recombinant human fibroblast growth factor-18,tanezumab/monoclonal antibody againstβ-nerve growth factor),which aims for more effectiveness and less incidence of adverse effects than the traditional ones.Furthermore,regenerative therapies(such as autologous chondrocyte implantation(ACI),new generation of matrix-induced ACI,cell-free scaffolds,induced pluripotent stem cells(iPS cells or iPSCs),and endogenous cell homing)are also emerging as promising alternatives as they have potential to enhance cartilage repair,and ultimately restore healthy tissue.However,despite currently available therapies and research advances,there remain unmet medical needs in the treatment of OA.This review highlights current research progress on pharmacologic and regenerative therapies for OA including key advances and potential limitations. | Wei Zhang Hongwei Ouyang Crispin R Dass Jiake Xu | 2015 | Bone Research2015,3,4: | 9 |
| 5 | Detection of the critical micelle concentration of cationic and anionic surfactants based on aggregation-induced emission property of hexaphenylsilole derivatives显示文摘We report a fluorescence 'turn-on' method to detect the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants. This method works well for both cationic and anionic surfactants. It employs an unprecedented mechanism (aggregation-induced emission, or AIE) to determine the CMC values, and the results are consistent with the data obtained by the classical techniques. In addition, this method renders the convenient detection of the CMC values. Any large and professional instruments are unnecessary, instead, a portable UV lamp and an ultrasonic generator are enough to carry out the detection in an ordinary laboratory. Considering that micelles are interesting entities and have found applications in many important fields such as emulsion polymerization, template of nanosized materials synthesis, controllable drug delivery and macromolecular self-assembling. | 6 | Pathological mechanisms and therapeutic outlooks for arthrofibrosis显示文摘Arthrofibrosis is a fibrotic joint disorder that begins with an inflammatory reaction to insults such as injury,surgery and infection.Excessive extracellular matrix and adhesions contract pouches,bursae and tendons,cause pain and prevent a normal range of joint motion,with devastating consequences for patient quality of life.Arthrofibrosis affects people of all ages,with published rates varying.The risk factors and best management strategies are largely unknown due to a poor understanding of the pathology and lack of diagnostic biomarkers.However,current research into the pathogenesis of fibrosis in organs now informs the understanding of arthrofibrosis.The process begins when stress signals stimulate immune cells.The resulting cascade of cytokines and mediators drives fibroblasts to differentiate into myofibroblasts,which secrete fibrillar collagens and transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β).Positive feedback networks then dysregulate processes that normally terminate healing processes.We propose two subtypes of arthrofibrosis occur:active arthrofibrosis and residual arthrofibrosis.In the latter the fibrogenic processes have resolved but the joint remains stiff.The best therapeutic approach for each subtype may differ significantly.Treatment typically involves surgery,however,a pharmacological approach to correct dysregulated cell signalling could be more effective.Recent research shows that myofibroblasts are capable of reversing differentiation,and understanding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and resolution will be essential for the development of cell-based treatments.Therapies with significant promise are currently available,with more in development,including those that inhibit TGF-βsignalling and epigenetic modifications.This review focuses on pathogenesis of sterile arthrofibrosis and therapeutic treatments. | Kayley M.Usher Sipin Zhu Georgios Mavropalias John A.Carrino Jinmin Zhao Jiake Xu | 2019 | Bone Research2019,7,1: | 5 |

| 9 | Effect of preparation methods on the hydrocracking performance of NiMo/Al_(2)O_(3) catalysts显示文摘In this work,NiMo catalysts with various contents of MoO_(3)were prepared through incipient wetness impregnation by a twostep method(NMxA)and onepot method(NMxB).The catalysts were then characterized by XRD,XPS,NH3TPD,H_(2)TPR,HRTEM,and N_(2)adsorptiondesorption technologies.The performance of the NiMo/Al_(2)O_(3) catalysts was investigated by hydrocracking lowtemperature coal tar.When the MoO3 content was 15 wt%,the interaction between Ni species and Al_(2)O_(3) on the NM15B catalyst was stronger than that on the NM15A catalyst,resulting in the poor performance of the former.When the MoO^(3) content was 20 wt%,MoO_(3) agglomerated on the surface of the NM20A catalyst,leading to decreased number of active sites and specific surface area and reduced catalytic performance.The increase in the number of MoS_(2) stack layers strengthened the interaction between Ni and Mo species of the NM20B catalyst and consequently improved its catalytic performance.When the MoO_(3) content reached 25 wt%,the active metals agglomerated on the surface of the NiMo catalysts,thereby directly decreasing the number of active sites.In conclusion,the twostep method is suitable for preparing catalysts with large pore diameter and low MoO_(3) content loading,and the onepot method is more appropriate for preparing catalysts with large specific surface area and high MoO_(3) content.Moreover,the NMxA catalysts had larger average pore diameter than the NMxB catalysts and exhibited improved desulfurization performance. | Jiake Yang Tongjiu Zuo Jiangyin Lu | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2021,34,4: | 4 |

| 12 | Electrochemical solid-state amorphization in the immiscible Cu-Li system显示文摘As a typical immiscible binary system, copper (Cu) and lithium (Li) show no alloying and chemical intermixing under normal circumstances. Here we show that, when decreasing Cu nanoparticle sizes into ultrasmall range, the nanoscale size effect can play a subtle yet critical role in mediating the chemical activity of Cu and therefore its miscibility with Li, such that the electrochemical alloying and solidstate amorphization will occur in such an immiscible system. This unusual observation was accomplished by performing in-situ studies of the electrochemical lithiation processes of individual CuO nanowires inside a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Upon lithiation, CuO nanowires are first electrochemically reduced to form discrete ultrasmall Cu nanocrystals that, unexpectedly, can in turn undergo further electrochemical lithiation to form amorphous Cu Lixnanoalloys. Real-time TEM imaging unveils that there is a critical grain size (ca. 6 nm), below which the nanocrystalline Cu particles can be continuously lithiated and amorphized. | 17 | Versatile subtypes of pericytes and their roles in spinal cord injury repair,bone development and repair显示文摘Vascular regeneration is a challenging topic in tissue repair. As one of the important components of the neurovascular unit(NVU),pericytes play an essential role in the maintenance of the vascular network of the spinal cord. To date, subtypes of pericytes have been identified by various markers, namely the PDGFR-β, Desmin, CD146, and NG2, each of which is involved with spinal cord injury(SCI) repair. In addition, pericytes may act as a stem cell source that is important for bone development and regeneration, whilst specific subtypes of pericyte could facilitate bone fracture and defect repair. One of the major challenges of pericyte biology is to determine the specific markers that would clearly distinguish the different subtypes of pericytes, and to develop efficient approaches to isolate and propagate pericytes.
