| 4 | Chinese Medicine as Complementary Therapy for Female Infertility显示文摘Chinese medicine(CM) has been used in clinical treatment for thousands of years in China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. CM is at present attracting many attentions around the world for reproductive health care and disease prevention, including treatment of female infertility. This review focuses on the CM treatment for female infertility patients, and supplies a summary on the efficacy, safety, and mechanism of some Chinese herbal medicines, herbal medicine-derived active compounds, and acupuncture. A large number of researches have reported that CM could alleviate or even cure female infertility by regulating hormone, improving reproductive outcome of in vivo fertilization, affecting embryonic implantation, curing polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, relieving mental stress, and regulating immune system. Meanwhile, a few studies claimed that there was little adverse reaction of CM in randomized controlled trials. However, up to present there is a lack of adequate evidences with molecular mechanistic researches and randomized controlled trials to prove the CM as an effective and safe treatment for infertility. | 6 | Sorafenib-based combined molecule targeting in treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Sorafenib is the only and standard systematic chemotherapy drug for treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) at the current stage. Although sorafenib showed survival benefits in large randomized phase Ⅲ studies, its clinical benefits remain modest and most often consist of temporary tumor stabilization, indicating that more effective first-line treatment regimens or second-line salvage therapies are required. The molecular pathogenesis of HCC is very complex, involving hyperactivated signal transduction pathways such as RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK and PI3K/AKT/m TOR and aberrant expression of molecules such as receptor tyrosine kinases and histone deacetylases. Simultaneous or sequential abrogation of these critical pathways or the functions of these key molecules involved in angiogenesis, proliferation, and apoptosis may yield major improvements in the management of HCC. | 8 | KL-6 mucin expression in carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater: Association with cancer progression显示文摘AIM: To assess histochemical expression of KL-6 and its clinicopathological significance in carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater.METHODS: Ampullary carcinoma tissues were collected from 38 patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy or local resection. Tissues were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis using KL-6 antibody.RESULTS: Positive staining of ampullary carcinoma cells was observed in 26 (68.4%) cases. Staining was not found in the surrounding non-cancer regions of the ampullary tissues. Remarkable KL-6 expression was observed in invasive carcinoma cells in pancreatic and duodenal tissues and in metastatic carcinoma cells in lymph nodes. Positive KL-6 expression was related to lymph node metastasis (P = 0.020), pancreatic invasion (P = 0.016), duodenal invasion (P = 0.034), and advanced stage of TNM clinical classification (P = 0.010). | 11 | Utility of tricalcium phosphate and osteogenic matrix cell sheet constructs for bone defect reconstruction显示文摘AIM: To determine the effects of transplanting osteogenic matrix cell sheets and beta-tricalcium phosphate(TCP) constructs on bone formation in bone defects.METHODS: Osteogenic matrix cell sheets were prepared from bone marrow stromal cells(BMSCs), and a porous TCP ceramic was used as a scaffold. Three experimental groups were prepared, comprised of TCP scaffolds(1) seeded with BMSCs;(2) wrapped with osteogenic matrix cell sheets; or(3) both. Constructs were implanted into a femoral defect model in rats and bone growth was evaluated by radiography, histology, biochemistry, and mechanical testing after 8 wk. RESULTS: In bone defects, constructs implanted with cell sheets showed callus formation with segmentalor continuous bone formation at 8 wk, in contrast to TCP seeded with BMSCs, which resulted in bone nonunion. Wrapping TCP constructs with osteogenic matrix cell sheets increased their osteogenic potential and resulting bone formation, compared with conventional bone tissue engineering TCP scaffolds seeded with BMSCs. The compressive stiffness(mean ± SD) values were 225.0 ± 95.7, 30.0 ± 11.5, and 26.3 ± 10.6 MPa for BMSC/TCP/Sheet constructs with continuous bone formation, BMSC/TCP/Sheet constructs with segmental bone formation, and BMSC/TCP constructs, respectively.
