| 2 | Perceptual learning for treating amblyopia in children based on activation of visual signal pathway Relationship of curative effects and time显示文摘BACKGROUND: Conventional methods (such as occlusion therapy, fine manipulation, complementary, and alternative medicine) take effects slowly, are time and labor consuming, and have uncertain curative effects in the treatment of amblyopia. Perceptual learning, a new method for treating amblyopia, improves the ability to process signals from the cerebral optic nerve system by specific visual stimulation and visual learning, as well as activation of the visual signal pathway utilizing brain nervous system plasticity. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated and evaluated the curative effects of perceptual learning, which can directionally increase brain plasticity, on the treatment of amblyopia in children. The relationship between curative effect and time was also analyzed. DESIGN: A self-control experiment. SETTING: Visual Science and Optometry Center, People's Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 125 amblyopic children (250 amblyopic eyes), 73 males, 52 females, averaging (6 ± 2) years of age, received treatment at the Visual Science and Optometry Center, People's Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region between September 2006 and February 2007 and were recruited for this study. All children presented with no structural disease of the eyeballs. Written informed consent for therapeutic regiments was obtained from each child's parent. The protocol received approval from the Hospital's Ethics Committee. METHODS: Visual function was tested with a perceptual learning system (Research Center for Human Health and Development of Sun Yat-sen University, National Engineering Technique Research Center for Medical Care Implement) for visual noise, position noise, contour discrimination, contrast sensitivity, grating stereogram, and random-dot fusion. These tests helped to evaluate the efficiency of visual information processing of these children, and to determine the degree of defects of the optic nerve cells and the connections of visual cortical neurons. According to results of visual function tests, individualized treatment was adopted for each amblyopia patient using perceptual learning system. One course of treatment lasted one month, and treatment was performed twice every day with two training procedures (each training procedure lasted for ten minutes). There was a ten-minute time interval between the two training procedures. The training treatment was performed in a quiet and dark environment. Visual acuity and recovery of visual function were tested every month. Original training procedure was continued or adjusted according to the results of visual function. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual function change; relationship of curative effects and curative time. RESULTS: A total of 125 amblyopia children were included in the final analysis. The total efficiency of perceptual learning for treating amblyopia in children was 75.2%. Visual acuity began to greatly increase 3 months after treatment (P < 0.05). Visual acuity was best corrected from 0.60 ± 0.23 before treatment to 0.86 ± 0.26 after treatment (P < 0.05). The mean time to reach improved levels with curative effects was (2.82 ± 1.30) months, and to reach a basically cured level was (2.87 ± 1.40) months. Percentage of improved visual acuity was the highest [98% (39/40)] in children that received 3 months of treatment and the lowest [55% (31/56)] in children that received 1 month of treatment (P < 0.05). The percentage of basically cured levels with curative effects increased with length of learning time and was the greatest in children that received 4 months of treatment [67% (31/46), P < 0.05]. | 3 | Effect of Huqian Wan on liver-Yin and kidney-Yin deficiency patterns in patients with knee osteoarthritis显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To observe the curative effect of Huqian Wan on liver and kidney-Yin deficiency knee osteoarthritis(KOA).METHODS: One hundred patients were randomly divided into a treatment(50 patients) and control group(50 patients). In the treatment group, patients orally took the Chinese medicine Huqian Wan. Control group patients orally took Votalin, 75 mg, once a day, for 8 weeks. The visual analog scale(VAS), Western Ontario and Mc Master University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC), and Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36-Item Health Survey(SF36) were used to evaluate the curative effect before treatment and after 8 and 16 weeks of treatment.RESULTS: VAS and WOMAC scores significantly decreased and SF 36 scores significantly increased after treatment in both groups compared with before treatment(P < 0.05). There were significant differences in VAS, WOMAC, and SF 36 score changes between the two groups at week 16(P < 0.05).There was a significant increase in VAS and WOMAC scores in the control groups(P < 0.05) between weeks 8 and 16, but no significant difference was found in the treatment group(P > 0.05).CONCLUSION: Huqian Wan could effectively improve the clinical symptoms and quality of life in patients with KOA. | 5 | Exposing Cu-rich {110} active facets in PtCu nanostars for boosting electrochemical performance toward multiple liquid fuels electrooxidation显示文摘In catalysis,tuning the structural composition of the metal alloy is known as an efficient way to optimize the catalytic activity.This work presents the synthesis of compositional segregated six-armed PtCu nanostars via a facile solvothermal method and their distinct composition-structure-dependent performances in electrooxidation processes.The alloy is shown to have a unique six arms with a Cu-rich dodecahedral core,mainly composed of {110} facets and exhibit superior catalytic activity toward alcohols electrooxidation compared to the hollow counterpart where Cu was selectively etched.Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the formation of hydroxyl intermediate (OH^*) is crucial to detoxify CO poisoning during the electrooxidation processes.The addition of Cu is found to effectively adjust the d band location of the alloy catalyst and thus enhance the formation of ^*OH intermediate from water splitting,which decreases the coverage of ^*CO intermediate.Our work demonstrates that the unique compositional anisotropy in alloy catalyst may boost their applications in electrocatalysis and provides a methodology for the design of this type catalyst. | Liping Huang Wei Zhang Peng Li Yongbo Song Hongting Sheng Yuanxin Du Yang-Gang Wang Yuen Wu Xun Hong Yanhuai Ding Xiaoyou Yuan Manzhou Zhu | 2019 | Nano Research2019,12,5: | 4 |
| 6 | PSA controls hepatic lipid metabolism by regulating the NRF2 signaling pathway显示文摘The activity of proteinase is reported to correlate with the development and progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase(PSA/NPEPPS)is an integral nontransmembrane enzyme that functions to catalyze the cleavage of amino acids near the N-terminus of polypeptides.A previous study suggested that this enzyme acts as a regulator of neuropeptide activity;however,the metabolic function of this enzyme in the liver has not been explored.Here,we identified the novel role of PSA in hepatic lipid metabolism.Specifically,PSA expression was lower in fatty livers from NAFLD patients and mice(HFD,ob/ob,and db/db).PSA knockdown in cultured hepatocytes exacerbated diet-induced triglyceride accumulation through enhanced lipogenesis and attenuated fatty acid β-oxidation.Moreover,PSA mediated activation of the master regulator of antioxidant response,nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(NRF2),by stabilizing NRF2 protein expression,which further induced downstream antioxidant enzymes to protect the liver from oxidative stress and lipid overload.Accordingly,liver-specific PSA overexpression attenuated hepatic lipid accumulation and steatosis in ob/ob mice.Furthermore,in human liver tissue samples,decreased PSA expression correlated with the progression of NAFLD.Overall,our findings suggest that PSA is a pivotal regulator of hepatic lipid metabolism and its antioxidant function occurs by suppressing NRF2 ubiquitination.Moreover,PSA may be a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for treating NAFLD. | Bangliang Huang Xin Xiong Linlin Zhang Xiufei Liu Yuren Wang Xiaoli Gong Qian Sang Yongling Lu Hua Qu Hongting Zheng Yi Zheng | 2021 | Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2021,13,7: | 4 |
| 7 | Forest soil CO_2 fluxes as a function of understory removal and N-fixing species addition显示文摘We report on the effects of forest management practices of understory removal and N-fixing species(Cassia alata) addition on soil CO2 fluxes in an Eucalyptus urophylla plantation(EUp),Acacia crassicarpa plantation(ACp),10-species-mixed plantation(Tp),and 30-species-mixed plantation(THp) using the static chamber method in southern China.Four forest management treatments,including(1) understory removal(UR);(2) C.alata addition(CA);(3) understory removal and replacement with C.alata(UR+CA);and(4) control without any disturbances(CK),were applied in the above four forest plantations with three replications for each treatment.The results showed that soil CO2 fluxes rates remained at a high level during the rainy season(from April to September),followed by a rapid decrease after October reaching a minimum in February.Soil CO2 fluxes were significantly higher(P < 0.01) in EUp(132.6 mg/(m2.hr)) and ACp(139.8 mg/(m2.hr)) than in Tp(94.0 mg/(m2.hr)) and THp(102.9 mg/(m2.hr)).Soil CO2 fluxes in UR and CA were significantly higher(P < 0.01) among the four treatments,with values of 105.7,120.4,133.6 and 112.2 mg/(m2.hr) for UR+CA,UR,CA and CK,respectively.Soil CO2 fluxes were positively correlated with soil temperature(P < 0.01),soil moisture(P < 0.01),NO3?-N(P < 0.05),and litterfall(P < 0.01),indicating that all these factors might be important controlling variables for soil CO2 fluxes.This study sheds some light on our understanding of soil CO2 flux dynamics in forest plantations under various management practices. | Haifang Li Shenglei Fu Hongting Zhao Hanping Xia | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,6: | 3 |

| 11 | CILP-2 is a novel secreted protein and associated with insulin resistance显示文摘Genetic association studies have implicated that cartilage intermediate layer protein 2 (CILP-2) confers the risk susceptibility for type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, it is still unknown whether CILP-2 is involved in the regulation of glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance (IR). In the current study, we initially observed that CILP-2 as a secreted protein was detected in both conditioned medium and lysates of cells transfected with an overexpressed vector. We then found that circulating CILP-2 levels had a progressive increase from normal to impaired glucose tolerance (a pre-diabetic status) and then to diabetes, which was correlated positively with waist-to-hip ratio, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, 2-h blood glucose after glucose overload, HbA1c, fasting insulin, 2-h plasma insulin after glucose overload, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance but negatively with HDL-C. CILP-2 expression was increased in the liver and muscle but decreased in adipose tissues of obese mice or T2DM patients. Furthermore, we demonstrated that CILP-2 circulating levels were affected by OGTT and Exenatide. CILP-2 overexpression resulted in impaired glucose tolerance and hepatic IR in vivo and increased PEPCK expression whereas suppressed phosphorylation of insulin receptor and Akt kinase in vitro. | 14 | Understanding and addressing the environmental risk of microplastics显示文摘Over the past decades,the plastic production has been dramatically increased.Indeed,a category of small plastic particles mainly with the shapes of fragments,fibers,or spheres,called microplastics(particles smaller than 5 mm)and nanoplastics(particles smaller than 1μm)have attracted particular attention.Because of its wide distribution in the environment and potential adverse effects to animal and human,microplastic pollution has been reported as a serious environment problem receiving increased attention in recent years.As one of the commonly detected emerging contaminants in the environment,recent evidence indicates that the concentration of microplastics show an increasing trend,for the reason that up to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic litter is released into aquatic environment from land-based sources each year.Furthermore,microplastic exposure levels of model organisms in laboratory studies are usually several orders of magnitude higher than those found in environment,and the microplastics exposure conditions are also different with those observed in the environment.Additionally,the detection of microplastics in feces indicates that they can be excreted out of the bodies of animal and human.Hence,great uncertainties might exist in microplastics exposure and health risk assessment based on current studies,which might be exaggerated.Policies reduce microplastic emission sources and hence minimize their environmental risks are determined.To promote the above policies,we must first overcome the technical obstacles of detecting microplastics in various samples. | Han Qu Hongting Diao Jiajun Han Bin Wang Gang Yu | 2023 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2023,17,1: | 1 |
