| 1 | Sulfur-containing amino acid methionine as the precursor of volatile organic sulfur compounds in algea-induced black bloom显示文摘After the application of methionine, a progressive and significant increase occurred in five volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs): methanethiol (MeSH), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) and dimethyl tetrasulfide (DMTeS). Even in the untreated control without a methionine addition, methionine and its catabolites (VOSCs, mainly DMDS) were found in considerable amounts that were high enough to account for the water's offensive odor. However, blackening only occurred in two methionine-amended treatments. The VOSCs production was observed to precede black color development, and the reaching of a peak value for total VOSCs was often followed by water blackening. The presence of glucose stimulated the degradation of methionine while postponing the occurrence of the black color and inhibiting the production of VOSCs. In addition, DMDS was found to be the most abundant species produced after the addition of methionine alone, and DMTeS appeared to be the most important compound produced after the addition of methionine+glucose. These results suggest that methionine acted as an important precursor of the VOSCs in lakes suffering from algea-induced black bloom. | 2 | Low-Level Temperature Inversions and Their Effect on Aerosol Condensation Nuclei Concentrations under Different Large-Scale Synoptic Circulations显示文摘Knowledge of the statistical characteristics of inversions and their effects on aerosols under different large-scale synoptic circulations is important for studying and modeling the diffusion of pollutants in the boundary layer. Based on results generated using the self-organizing map(SOM) weather classification method, this study compares the statistical characteristics of surface-based inversions(SBIs) and elevated inversions(EIs), and quantitatively evaluates the effect of SBIs on aerosol condensation nuclei(CN) concentrations and the relationship between temperature gradients and aerosols for six prevailing synoptic patterns over the the Southern Great Plains(SGP) site during 2001–10. Large-scale synoptic patterns strongly influence the statistical characteristics of inversions and the accumulation of aerosols in the low-level atmosphere. The activity,frequency, intensity, and vertical distribution of inversions are significantly different among these synoptic patterns. The vertical distribution of inversions varies diurnally and is significantly different among the different synoptic patterns. Anticyclonic patterns affect the accumulation of aerosols near the ground more strongly than cyclonic patterns. Mean aerosol CN concentrations increase during SBIs compared to no inversion cases by 16.1%, 22.6%, 24.5%, 58.7%, 29.8% and 23.7% for the six synoptic patterns. This study confirms that there is a positive correlation between temperature gradients and aerosol CN concentrations near the ground at night under similar large-scale synoptic patterns. The relationship is different for different synoptic patterns and can be described by linear functions. | 3 | ANALYSIS OF COLUMN-INTEGRATED AEROSOL OPTICAL THICKNESS IN BEIJING FROM AERONET OBSERVATIONS显示文摘Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT), water vapor content and derived Angstrom exponent acquired by a CIMEL sun photometer in Beijing are analyzed. Monthly means computed from quality-assured daily means, seasonal trends and inter-annual variations are presented and discussed. Summer has the highest seasonal average AOT at 440 nm (τa440), Angstrom exponent (α440–870) and water vapor content with the values 0.93, 1.34 and 3.0 cm, respectively. The second highest seasonal average τa440 appears in spring with the largest variation of α440–870 and minimum α440–870 0.99 due to the impact of coarse particles. The minimum seasonal average τa440 (0.44) and water vapor content (0.4 cm) appear in winter. The annual average τa440, α440–870 and water vapor content for about 4-year observation period are 0.70, 1.19 and 1.4 cm, respectively. | 6 | Differential effects of rapamycin on Bursaphelenchus xylophilus with different virulence and differential expression of autophagy genes under stresses in nematodes显示文摘Pine wilt disease(PWD)caused by the pine wood nematode(PWN),Bursaphelenchus xylophilus,is a devastating disease for Pinus spp.The virulence and resilience of PWN are closely linked to the spread and development of PWD.Numerous studies have shown that autophagy has important physiological and pathological functions in eukaryotes.But little is known about the relationships between autophagy and PWNs’virulence and resistance.In this study,through observation under the microscope and recording,we found the induction of autophagy by rapamycin could dramatically improve movement ability of PWNs with different virulence,and the highly virulent AMA3 isolate moved more than the low virulent YW4 isolate when autophagy was over-induced.High concentrations of rapamycin substantially improved the feeding and reproduction of AMA3 but not YW4.Conserved domains of autophagy genes BxATG3,BxATG4,and BxATG7 were first cloned from PWNs by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).Expression profiling of these three autophagy genes under biotic and abiotic stresses in PWNs with different virulence was determined by quantitative RT-PCR.The results revealed the expression levels of these three autophagy genes in PWNs with different virulence were increased significantly when nematodes were subject to high and low temperatures,oxidative stress,and defensive responses of pine trees.The expression levels of autophagy genes under biotic and abiotic stresses in AMA3 were higher than those in YW4,and different genes showed different performance.Our study clarified that autophagy was closely related to virulence and resistance of PWN,and the ability of a highly virulent isolate to regulate autophagy activity under stresses was stronger than that of a low virulent isolate. | Hongbin Liu Fan Wu Xiaoqin Wu Jianren Ye | 2019 | Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2019,51,3: | 4 |
| 7 | Anti-apoptotic effects of aspirin following cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats显示文摘BACKGROUND:The pharmacological effects of aspirin on apoptosis are complex.The underlying mechanisms have not been properly defined.OBJECTIVE:To observe the effect of different doses of aspirin on brain cell apoptosis following focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury(CIRI) in rats.DESING,TIME AND SETTING:A randomized,controlled,animal experiment,performed at the School of Medicine and Pharmaceutics,Jiangnan University between June and October 2006.MATERIALS:Twenty-six male,adult,Sprague Dawley rats(grade II),weighing 240-290 g,were obtained from Shanghai Experimental Animal Center,Chinese Academy of Sciences.Aspirin was provided by Sigma(USA).METHODS:The rats were randomly divided into four groups:sham-operation(SO),CIRI + vehicle,CIRI + aspirin(6 mg/kg),and CIRI + aspirin(60 mg/kg).Rats in the lesion groups were intragastrically administrated saline,aspirin(6 mg/kg),or aspirin(60 mg/kg),respectively.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:The number of pyramidal neurons with normal appearance in the cerebral cortex at 2-4 mm from the midline;apoptotic cell death as measured by TUNEL;Bcl-2 and Bax protein localization was determined by immunohistochemistry;malondialdehyde(MDA) and super oxidation(SOD) content were determined by biochemistry method;adenosine triphosphate(ATP) content measured by capillary electrophoresis.RESULTS:Following CIRI,the following parameters were altered compared with sham-operated animals:the number of neurons with normal appearance was significantly reduced in the cerebral cortex;the number of apoptotic cells increased;Bax protein expression was enhanced;and the ratio between Bcl-2 and Bax decreased.In addition,MDA content increased significantly,whereas ATP content decreased(P < 0.01).Aspirin ameliorated the loss of healthy pyramidal neurons.Both 6 and 60 mg/kg aspirin increased the ratio between Bcl-2 and Bax,with no significant difference between the treatment groups.In addition,60 mg/kg aspirin decreased MDA content and increased ATP levels.However,6 mg/kg aspirin did not have the same effect.CONCLUSION:Aspirin reduced the number of apoptotic cells following CIRI.These results suggest that the neuroprotective mechanism of aspirin could be related to elevated Bcl-2 protein levels or decreased Bax protein expression.The increase in the ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax appears to be a common anti-apoptotic mechanism of aspirin. | Liying Qiu Bin Du Ying Li Hongbin Fan Zhiyong Yang | 2008 | Neural Regeneration Research2008,3,9: | 4 |
| 8 | Changes in neuronal apoptosis and apoptosis modulatory factors in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion显示文摘BACKGROUND: The high concentration of glutamate release is the main cause for neuronal cell death. The relationship between glutamate level and apoptosis during ischemia/reperfusion injury is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To observe the neuronal apoptosis at 24 and 72 hours following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion in rats,and analyze the possible influencing factors. DESIGN: A randomized controlled animal experiment. SETTING: School of Medicine,Southern Yangtze University. MATERIALS: Totally 30 male adult Sprague Dawley (SD) rats of clean grade,weighing 240-290 g,were obtained from Shanghai Experimental Animal Center,Chinese Academy of Sciences. The rats were randomly divided into sham-operated group (n=10) and model group (n=20). Each group was observed at 24 and 72 hours after ischemia/reperfusion,5 rats at each time point in the sham-operated group,whereas 12 at 24 hours and 8 at 72 hours in the model group. Kits for determining apoptosis and Bcl-2 were bought from Wuhan Boster Biological Technology,Co.,Ltd.; Kit for calcineurin from Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Institute. METHODS: The experiment was carried out in the Functional Scientific Research Room of Southern Yangtze University from June to October in 2006. ① Right middle cerebral artery was occluded by inserting a thread through internal carotid artery (ICA). The surgical process for the sham-operated rats was the same as that in the model group except a nylon suture inserted the ICA. According to Longa five-degree standard,the neurological deficit evaluation of rats was evaluated after surgery,and grades 1-3 were taken as successful model establishment. The blood was recirculated by withdrawing the nylon filament under anesthesia at 2 hours after ischemia in successful rat models. ②After reperfusion,the brain tissue was quickly removed at 24 or 72 hours and the slices were obtained from optic chiasma to funnel manubrium. The changes of the number of apoptotic cells were observed using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling method. The expressions of Bcl-2 protein were determined with immunohistochemical staining. The activity of calcineurin was determined by the inorganic phosphorus method. The content of excitatory amino acid was detected by high performance liquid chromatography. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Glutanate content in brain tissue; ② Conditions of apoptosis; ③ Calcineurin activity in brain tissue; ④ Bcl-2 expression in brain tissue. RESULTS: Totally 30 SD rats were used,5 died and the other 25 were involved in the analysis of results. ① Changes of apoptosis: There were 0-3 apoptotic cells in the sham-operated group. In the model group,the numbers of apoptotic cells were obviously increased at 24 and 72 hours of reperfusion (P < 0.01),and it was markedly reduced at 72 hours as compared with 24 hours (P < 0.01). ② Changes of glutanate content: The glutamate contents at 24 and 72 hours of reperfusion in the model group were obviously higher than those in the sham-operated group (P < 0.01); In the model group,it was obviously increased at 24 hours as compared with 72 hours (P < 0.01). ③ Changes of Bcl-2 protein: In the model group,the Bcl-2 protein expression had no obvious changes at 24 hours of reperfusion,and it was obviously enhanced at 72 hours,which was obviously different from that in the sham-operated group and that at 24 hours (P < 0.01). ④ Changes of calcinerin activity: In the model group,the activity of calcineurin in brain tissue had no obvious changes at 24 hours of reperfusion; The activity of calcineurin at 72 hours was obviously higher than that in the sham-operated group and that at 24 hours (P < 0.01). | 9 | The contribution of attached Ulva prolifera on Pyropia aquaculture rafts to green tides in the Yellow Sea显示文摘Green tides caused by the unusual accumulation of high floating Ulva prolifera have occurred regularly in the Yellow Sea since 2007.The primary source of the Yellow Sea green tides is the attached algae on the Pyropia aquaculture rafts in the Subei Shoal.Ulva prolifera and Blidingia(Italic)sp.are the main species observed on Pyropia aquaculture rafts in the Subei Shoal.We found that U.prolifera has strong buoyancy and a rapid growth rate,which may explain why it is the dominant species of green tides that occur in the China's sea area of the Yellow Sea.The growth rate of floating U.prolifera was about 20%–31%d–1,which was much higher than Blidingia(Italic)sp.There were about 1.7×104 t of attached algae on the Pyropia aquaculture rafts in May 2012.We found that 39%of attached algae could float when the tide rose in the Subei Shoal,and U.prolifera accounted for 63%of the floating algae.Our analysis estimated that about 4000 t of attached U.prolifera floated into the surrounding waters of the Subei Shoal during the recycling period of aquaculture rafts.These results suggest that the initial floating biomass of large-scale green tides in the Yellow Sea is determined by the U.prolifera biomass attached to Pyropia aquaculture rafts,further impacting the scale of the green tide。 | Hongbin Han Shiliang Fan Wei Song Yan Li Jie Xiao Zongling Wang Xuelei Zhang Dewen Ding | 2020 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2020,39,2: | 3 |
| 10 | Brain-wide Mapping of Mono-synaptic Afferents to Different Cell Types in the Laterodorsal Tegmentum显示文摘The laterodorsal tegmentum(LDT) is a brain structure involved in distinct behaviors including arousal,reward, and innate fear. How environmental stimuli and top-down control from high-order sensory and limbic cortical areas converge and coordinate in this region to modulate diverse behavioral outputs remains unclear.Using a modified rabies virus, we applied monosynaptic retrograde tracing to the whole brain to examine the LDT cell type specific upstream nuclei. The LDT received very strong midbrain and hindbrain afferents and moderate cortical and hypothalamic innervation but weak connections to the thalamus. The main projection neurons from cortical areas were restricted to the limbic lobe, including the ventral orbital cortex(VO), prelimbic, and cingulate cortices. Although different cell populations received qualitatively similar inputs, primarily via afferents from the periaqueductal gray area, superior colliculus, and the LDT itself, parvalbumin-positive(PV?) GABAergic cells received preferential projections from local LDT neurons.With regard to the different subtypes of GABAergic cells, aconsiderable number of nuclei, including those of the ventral tegmental area, central amygdaloid nucleus, and VO, made significantly greater inputs to somatostatinpositive cells than to PV?cells. | 11 | Intensive Radiosonde Measurements of Summertime Convection over the Inner Mongolia Grassland in 2014:Difference between Shallow Cumulus and Other Conditions显示文摘Using radiosonde measurements from 26 July to 30 July 2014 at Baiqi over the Inner Mongolia grassland of China, the vertical structure of shallow cumulus(SCu) clouds and associated environmental conditions were investigated. The cloud base height and the cloud top height of SCu was 3.4 km and 5 km, respectively. The temperature of the SCu layer was less than 0℃. The horizontal advection of specific humidity was smaller than the vertical transport in the atmosphere below 5 km.Above 5 km, the thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere remained stable. At the interface of the cloud layer and free air atmosphere, there was obvious wind shear and a temperature inversion(~2.9℃). Comparisons of environmental parameters associated with cumulus congestus, rain and clear days, showed that the formation of SCu was characterized by a higher Bowen ratio(high sensible heat flux and low latent heat flux), which indicated intensive turbulence in the boundary layer. The formation of SCu was associated with the boundary layer height exceeding the lifting condensation level. | 16 | Cyclical helping hands: seasonal tailwinds differentially affect migrating Oriental Storks (Ciconia boyciana) travel speed显示文摘Background:The Oriental Stork(Ciconia boyciana)breeds in southeastern Siberia and parts of northeast China,and winters mainly in southeast China.Although the autumn migration pattern of Oriental Storks has been previ-ously described,differences between spring and autumn migration travel speed in relation to wind assistance were unknown.Methods:Using GPS/GSM transmitters,we tracked the full migrations of 18 Oriental Storks during 2015-2018 to compare differences in autumn and spring migration patterns,and combined the satellite telemetry data with the National Center for Environmental Prediction Reanalysis data to explain the relationship between 850 mbar wind vec-tors and seasonal differences in travel speed.Results:Differences in tailwinds contributed to significant differences in daily average Oriental Storks travel speed in spring(258.11±64.8 km/day)compared to autumn(172.23±49.7 km/day,p<0.001).Storks stopped significantly more often in autumn than spring(1.78±1.1 versus 1.06±0.9,p<0.05),but stopover duration(15.52±12.4 versus 16.30±15.1 days,respectively,p=0.3)did not differ significantly.Tailwinds at 850 mbar pressure level(extracted from the National Center of Environmental Prediction Reanalysis data archive)significantly affected daily flying speed dur-ing spring and autumn migration.Tailwind conditions in spring(mean 4.40±5.6 m/s)were always more favourable than in autumn when they received no net benefit(0.48±5.6 m/s,p<0.001).Despite mean spring migration dura-tion being less than autumn(27.52±15.9 versus 32.77±13.4 days,p=0.17),large individual variation meant that this duration did not differ significantly from each other.Conclusions:For long distance migratory soaring birds(such as storks),relative duration of spring and autumn migration likely relates to the interaction between imperative for earliest arrival to breeding grounds and seasonal meteorological conditions experienced en route. | Shujuan Fan Qingshan Zhao Hongbin Li Baoguang Zhu Shubin Dong Yanbo Xie Lei Cao Anthony David Fox | 2020 | Avian Research2020,11,2: | 2 |
| 17 | Analysis of Low-level Temperature Inversions and Their Effects on Aerosols in the Lower Atmosphere显示文摘High-quality and continuous radiosonde, aerosol and surface meteorology datasets are used to investigate the statistical characteristics of meteorological parameters and their effects on aerosols. The data were collected at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains climate research facility during 2000–15. The parameters and vertical distribution of temperature inversion layers were found to have strong diurnal and seasonal changes. For surface-based temperature inversion (SBI), the mean frequency and depth of temperature inversion layers were 39.4% and 198 m, respectively. The temperature difference between the top and bottom of SBI was 4.8℃, and so the temperature gradient was 2.4℃(100 m)^-1. The detailed vertical distributions of temperature inversion had been determined, and only the temperature inversion layers below 1000 m showed diurnal and seasonal variations. Mean surface aerosol number concentrations increased by 43.0%, 21.9% and 49.2% when SBIs were present at 0530, 1730 and 2330 LST, respectively. The effect of SBI on surface aerosol concentration was weakest in summer (18.1%) and strongest in winter (58.4%). During elevated temperature inversion events, there was no noticeable difference in surface aerosol number concentrations. Temperature differences and temperature gradients across SBIs correlated fairly well with aerosol number concentrations, especially for temperature gradients. The vertical distribution of aerosol optical properties with and without temperature inversions was different. Surface aerosol measurements were representative of the air within (below), but not above, SBIs and EIs. | 19 | Characteristics of Uranium Mineralization in Red Clastic Formations in the Southwestern Margin of the Ordos Basin显示文摘In the southwestern margin of the Ordos Basin,uranium mineralization is primarily hosted by predominantly oxidative red clastic formations in the Lower Cretaceous.The main target layers for uranium exploration are the Madongshan and Liwaxia formations of the Liupanshan Group,followed by the Jingchuan Formation of the Zhidan Group.The host rocks(medium-fine feldspar quartz sandstone),which are bleached to a light grayish white color,contain a minor organic matter component and pyrite.Uranium mineralization changes from surficial infiltration or phreatic oxidation in the upper part to interlayer oxidation in the lower part.Uranium ore bodies are mostly lenticular or tabular in shape,locally shaped like crescent rolls.Individual ore bodies are typically small and shallow.Uranium predominantly manifests as pitchblende and coffinite.Coffinite is usually short and columnar or granular in habit,whereas pitchblende occurs as an irregular colloidal covering on the surface or in fissures of ferric oxide,silicate,clay or carbonate.Secondary uranium minerals are torbernite,uranophane,and uranopilite.Minerals associated with uranium are mainly pyrite,chalcopyrite and,to a minor extent,arsenopyrite and fluorite.The associated elements are Mo,V,Se,Co,Ni,and Mn,the host sandstone being high in Cu and Ba.Overall,the red clastic formations in the southwestern margin of the Ordos Basin are characterized by’five multiples but one low’which means multiple target layers,multiple stages of mineralization,multiple ore body shapes,multiple kinds of uranium minerals,multiple associated elements,but low organic matter.This implies an overall complex uranium metallogenic environment and mineralization process.It is recommended that future uranium exploration should take into consideration regional metallogenic conditions and mineralization features,with target layers in the wide-smooth synclinal slope being focused on.Most uranium deposits are small to medium in size,and the main type of uranium mineralization can vary by target layer. | ZHANG Zilong HE Feng YI Longsheng FAN Honghai CAI Yuqi LIU Hongxu LIU Xinyang CHEN Hongbin JIA Cui YANG Mengjia | 2020 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2020,94,5: | 1 |
| 20 | Low impedance nature of 12 acupoints on the limbs,and the unexpected dependence on limb angle显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To better understand the working mechanism of acupuncture, we investigated the skin electrical impedance distribution around acupoints, and the impedance changes at 12 original acupoints bilaterally after bending the limbs.METHODS: We measured the skin electrical impedance in three study subjects in the frequency range of 40 to 10 k Hz using the four-electrode method with a sharp probe and a large reference electrode.A measurement matrix of 7 mm × 7 mm with spacing of 2.0(or 3.0) mm was measured to obtain 2 D impedance mapping of acupoints. The impedance spectra of 12 original acupoints were measured at the 0° position and the 90° position.RESULTS: The electrical impedance of some acupoints, such as Yangchi(TE 4), was 16 times lower than that of the surrounding area, showing a recognizable small central area of low impedance with a diameter of less than 4 mm. In contrast, other acupoints, such as Laogong(PC 8), had an electrical impedance that was not significantly different from that of the surrounding area. When the limb was bent from a straight position(0o) to a vertical position(90o), the electrical impedance of the 12 original acupoints showed varied trends, either increasing or decreasing by a factor of up to ten times, or remaining at the same level.CONCLUSION: Not all acupoints tested show the property of low impedance, which might be related to the varied depth of the openings of superficial collaterals. The unexpected dependence of acupoint impedance on limb angle is a novel discovery, which implies that the channel paths are located in interstitial structures in the limbs.
