1Cracks coalescence mechanism and cracks propagation paths in rock-like specimens containing pre-existing random cracks under compression显示文摘The mechanism of cracks propagation and cracks coalescence due to compressive loading of the brittle substances containing pre-existing cracks(flaws)was modeled experimentally using specially made rock-like specimens from Portland Pozzolana Cement(PPC).The breakage process of the specimens was studied by inserting single and double flaws with different inclination angles at the center and applying uniaxial compressive stress at both ends of the specimen.The first crack was oriented at 50° from the horizontal direction and kept constant throughout the analysis while the orientation of the second crack was changed.It is experimentally observed that the wing cracks are produced at the first stage of loading and start their propagation toward the direction of uniaxial compressive loading.The secondary cracks may also be produced in form of quasi-coplanar and/or oblique cracks in a stable manner.The secondary cracks may eventually continue their propagation in the direction of maximum principle stress.These experimental works were also simulated numerically by a modified higher order displacement discontinuity method and the cracks propagation and cracks coalescence were studied based on Mode I and Mode II stress intensity factors(SIFs).It is concluded that the wing cracks initiation stresses for the specimens change from 11.3 to 14.1 MPa in the case of numerical simulations and from 7.3 to 13.8 MPa in the case of experimental works.It is observed that cracks coalescence stresses change from 21.8 to 25.3 MPa and from 19.5 to 21.8 MPa in the numerical and experimental analyses,respectively.Comparing some of the numerical and experimental results with those recently cited in the literature validates the results obtained by the proposed study.Finally,a numerical simulation was accomplished to study the effect of confining pressure on the crack propagation process,showing that the SIFs increase and the crack initiation angles change in this case.Hadi Haeri Kourosh Shahriar Mohammad Fatehi Marji Parviz Moarefvand 2014Journal of Central South University2014,21,6:16
2Experimental and numerical study on crack propagation in pre-cracked beam specimens under three-point bending显示文摘A simultaneous experimental and numerical study on crack propagation in the pre-cracked beams specimens(concrete-like materials) is carried out using three-point bending flexural test. The crack propagation and coalescence paths of internal cracks in side beam specimens are experimentally studied by inserting double internal cracks. The effects of crack positions on the fracturing path in the bridge areas of the double cracked beam specimens are also studied. It has been observed that the breaking of concrete-like cracked beams specimens occurs mainly by the propagation of wing cracks emanating from the tips of the pre-existing cracks in the numerical and experimental analyses, respectively. The same specimens are numerically simulated by an indirect boundary element method(IBEM) known as displacement discontinuity method(DDM) using higher displacement discontinuity. These numerical results are compared with the existing experimental results. 3A microscale optical implant for continuous in vivo monitoring of intraocular pressure显示文摘Intraocular pressure(IOP)is a key clinical parameter in glaucoma management.However,despite the potential utility of daily measurements of IOP in the context of disease management,the necessary tools are currently lacking,and IOP is typically measured only a few times a year.Here we report on a microscale implantable sensor that could provide convenient,accurate,ondemand IOP monitoring in the home environment.When excited by broadband near-infrared(NIR)light from a tungsten bulb,the sensor’s optical cavity reflects a pressure-dependent resonance signature that can be converted to IOP.NIR light is minimally absorbed by tissue and is not perceived visually.The sensor’s nanodot-enhanced cavity allows for a 3–5 cm readout distance with an average accuracy of 0.29 mm Hg over the range of 0–40 mm Hg.Sensors were mounted onto intraocular lenses or silicone haptics and secured inside the anterior chamber in New Zealand white rabbits.Implanted sensors provided continuous in vivo tracking of short-term transient IOP elevations and provided continuous measurements of IOP for up to 4.5 months.Jeong Oen Lee Haeri Park Juan Du Ashwin Balakrishna Oliver Chen David Sretavan Hyuck Choo 2017Microsystems & Nanoengineering2017,3,1:4
4Feasibility of using electrokinetics and nanomaterials to stabilize and improve collapsible soils显示文摘Loess as a subcategory of collapsible soils is a well-known aeolian deposit generally characterized as a highly-porous medium with relatively low natural density and water content and a high percentage of fine-grained particles.Such collapsible soil sustains large stresses under a dry condition with natural water content.However,it can experience high and relatively sudden decreases in its volume once it reaches a certain water content under a certain load and therefore,the natural condition of the soil might not be suitable for construction if the possibility of the exposure of the soil to excessive water exists during the lifetime of the project.This research presents the utilization of an innovative method for stabilization and improvement of Gorgan loessial soil.This method uses electrokinetics and nanomaterials to instigate additives to move through soil pores,as an in situ remedial measure.To assess the acceptability of this measure,the deformability and strength characteristics of the improved collapsible soil are measured and compared with those of the unimproved soil,implementing several unsaturated oedometer tests under constant vertical stress and varying matric suction.The result emphasizes the importance of the matric suction on the behavior of both improved and unimproved soils.The test results indicate that the resistance of the soil was highly dependent on the water content and matric suction of the soil.The oedometer tests on samples improved by 3%lime and 5%nanomaterials show considerable improvement of the collapse potential.Results also reveal that stabilized samples experience notably lower volume decrease under the same applied stresses.Arash Hosseini S.Mohsen Haeri Siavash Mahvelati Aria Fathi 2019Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,5:3

6Fracture analyses of different pre-holed concrete specimens under compression显示文摘Crack propagation processes in specially prepared concrete discs and rectangular specimens containing a single cylindrical hole or multiple holes of varying diameters have been studied both experimentally and numerically.In this research, the cracks coalescence paths in Brazilian disc and rectangular specimens made from rock-like material containing multi-holes are investigated. These concrete specimens are specially prepared from an appropriate mixture of Portland Pozzolana Cement(PPC), fine sands, and water.The pre-holed Brazilian discs and rectangular specimens are experimentally tested under compression. The breakage load in the ring type disc specimens containing an axial hole with varying diameters is measured and the distribution of the induced lateral stress is obtained. The mechanism of cracks propagation in the wall of the ring type specimens is also studied. In the case of multi-hole Brazilian disc and rectangular specimens, the cracks propagation and cracks coalescence are also investigated. These experiments are numerically modeled by a modified higher order displacement discontinuity method. It has been shown that the corresponding experimental and numerical results are in good agreement with each other.
