Pancreatic pseudocyst显示文摘Pancreatic pseudocysts are complications of acute or chronic pancreatitis. Initial diagnosis is accomplished most often by cross-sectional imaging. Endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration has become the preferred test to help distinguish pseudocyst from other cystic lesions of the pancreas. Most pseudocysts resolve spontaneously with supportive care. The size of the pseudocyst and the length of time the cyst has been present are poor predictors for the potential of pseudocyst resolution or complications, but in general, larger cysts are more likely to be symptomatic or cause complications. The main two indications for some type of invasive drainage procedure are persistent patient symptoms or the presence of complications (infection, gastric outlet or biliary obstruction, bleeding). Three different strategies for pancreatic pseudocysts drainage are available: endoscopic (transpapillary or transmural) drainage, percutaneous catheter drainage, or open surgery. To date, no prospective controlled studies have compared directly these approaches. As a result, the management varies based on local expertise, but in general, endoscopic drainage is becoming the preferred approach because it is less invasive than surgery, avoids the need for external drain, and has a high long-term success rate. A tailored therapeutic approach taking into consideration patient preferences and involving multidisciplinary team of therapeutic endoscopist, interventional radiologist and pancreatic surgeon should be considered in all cases.Samir Habashi Peter V Draganov 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,1:46

Preemptive mechanical ventilation can block progressive acute lung injury显示文摘Mortality from acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS) remains unacceptable, approaching 45% in certain high-risk patient populations. Treating fulminant ARDS is currently relegated to supportive care measures only. Thus, the best treatment for ARDS may lie with preventing this syndrome from ever occurring. Clinical studies were examined to determine why ARDS has remained resistant to treatment over the past several decades. In addition, both basic science and clinical studies were examined to determine the impact that early, protective mechanical ventilation may have on preventing the development of ARDS in at-risk patients. Fulminant ARDS is highly resistant to both pharmacologic treatment and methods of mechanical ventilation. However, ARDS is a progressive disease with an early treatment window that can be exploited. In particular, protective mechanical ventilation initiated before the onset of lung injury can prevent the progression to ARDS. Airway pressure release ventilation(APRV) is a novel mechanical ventilation strategy for delivering a protective breath that has been shown to block progressive acute lung injury(ALI) and prevent ALI from progressing to ARDS. ARDS mortality currently remains as high as 45% in some studies. As ARDS is a progressive disease, the key to treatment lies with preventing the disease from ever occurring while it remains subclinical. Early protective mechanical ventilation with APRV appears to offer substantial benefit in this regard and may be the prophylactic treatment of choice for preventing ARDS.Benjamin Sadowitz Sumeet Jain Michaela Kollisch-Singule Joshua Satalin Penny Andrews Nader Habashi Louis A Gatto Gary Nieman 2016World Journal of Critical Care Medicine2016,5,1:9
Expression levels ofβcatenin and galectin-3 in meningioma and their effect on brain invasion and recurrence:a tissue microarray study显示文摘Objective:Meningiomas are neoplasms that arise from the meninges of the central nervous system(CNS).They constitute about25.6%of CNS tumors diagnosed in Egypt. Some morphological variants of meningiomas display aggressive behavior, leading to brain-invasive growth pattern.Although meningiomas are usually treated by complete surgical excision, the risk of postoperative recurrence remains.Hence, additional biomarkers for predicting aggressive behavior must be discovered. This study aims to explore the clinical and biological relevance of the protein expression levels ofβ-catenin and galectine-3 in meningioma and to understand the pathobiology of this neoplasm. Methods:This retrospective study was carried out on 153 cases of meningioma by using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry forβ-catenin and galectine-3.Results:Highβ-catenin expression was significantly associated with transitional and meningiotheliomatous meningiomas, low tumor grade, low recurrence rate, and low incidence of brain invasion.Meanwhile, high galectin-3 expression was associated with brain invasion, recurrence, high tumor grade, and tumor type.Logistic regression analysis indicated that among all variables included in the model,β-catenin and galactin-3 expression levels were significant predictors of tumor recurrence(P<0.001).Conclusions:Galectin-3 andβ-catenin are involved in meningioma recurrence but not in brain invasion. These molecules could be important potential therapeutic targets and predictors for meningiomas.Rehab Allah Ahmed Abdelhadi M Shebl Hany Onsy Habashy 2017Cancer Biology & Medicine2017,14,3:4
Interplay between micro RNA-17-5p, insulin-like growth factor-Ⅱ through binding protein-3 in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of microR NA on insulinlike growth factor binding protein-3(IGFBP-3) and hence on insulin-like growth factor-Ⅱ(IGF-Ⅱ) bioavailability in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Bioinformatic analysis was performed using microrna.org, DIANA lab and Segal lab softwares. Total RNA was extracted from 23 HCC and 10 healthy liver tissues using mir Vana mi RNA Isolation Kit. microR NA-17-5p(miR-17-5p) expression was mimicked and antagonized in Hu H-7 cell lines using Hi Per Fect Transfection Reagent, then total RNA was extracted using Biozol reagent then reverse transcribed into cD NA followed by quantification of mi R-17-5p and IGFBP-3 expression using Taq Man real-time quantitative PCR. Luciferase reporter assay was performed to validate the binding of miR-17-5p to the 3'UTR of IGFBP-3. Free IGF-Ⅱ protein was measured in transfected Hu H-7 cells using IGF-Ⅱ ELISA kit. RESULTS: Bioinformatic analysis revealed IGFBP-3 as a potential target for miR-17-5p. Screening of miR-17-5p and IGFBP-3 revealed a moderate negative correlation in HCC patients, where mi R-17-5p was extensively underexpressed in HCC tissues(P = 0.0012), while IGFBP-3 showed significant upregulation in the same set of patients(P = 0.0041) compared to healthy donors. Forcing mi R-17-5p expression in Hu H-7 cell lines showed a significant downregulation of IGFBP-3 mR NA expression(P = 0.0267) and a significant increase in free IGF-Ⅱ protein(P = 0.0339) compared to mock untransfected cells using unpaired t-test. Luciferase assay validated IGFBP-3 as a direct target of mi R-17-5p; luciferase activity was inhibited by 27.5% in cells co-transfected with miR-17-5p mimics and the construct harboring the wild-type binding region 2 of IGFBP-3 compared to cells transfected with this construct alone(P = 0.0474).CONCLUSION: These data suggest that regulating IGF-Ⅱ bioavailability and hence HCC progression can be achieved through targeting IGFBP-3 via manipulating the expression of miR NAs.Danira Ashraf Habashy Hend Mohamed El Tayebi Injie Omar Fawzy Karim Adel Hosny Gamal Esmat Ahmed Ihab Abdelaziz 2016World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,23:3
Spatial correlation of pit and mound topography with canopy gaps in a virgin mixed beech forest, northern Iran显示文摘In a reserved forest parcel in a virgin eastern Hyrcanian mixed beech forest,80 ha was surveyed to determine the pit and mound topography, canopy gaps and dead trees. The aim was to investigate the spatial patterns and correlation of pit and mound features with canopy gaps.Seventy-five canopy gaps and 61 pit and mound features were identified. The univariate first order nearest neighbor(R_(CE))and bivariate second order test(Ripley’s K)statistic were applied.R_(CE) statistics highlighted a general aggregation pattern for canopy gaps and pits and mounds, while pits and mounds alone were more clumped.Distances between canopy gaps were 130 m average, whereas distances between pit and mound features and dead trees were 60 and 78 m,respectively.Spatial positive correlation of canopy gaps with pits and mounds were observed with all distances. The result of spatial correlations between canopy gaps with pits and mounds confirmed that windthrows cause micro successions in fallen tree ecosystem-scale correlated with gap phase dynamics in the forest community-scale.Hashem Habashi 2019Journal of Forestry Research2019,30,1:2

SARS-CoV-2 involvement in central nervous system tissue damage显示文摘As the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)continues to spread globally,it became evident that the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects multiple organs including the brain.Several clinical studies revealed that patients with COVID-19 infection experience an array of neurological signs ranging in severity from headaches to life-threatening strokes.Although the exact mechanism by which the SARS-CoV-2 virus directly impacts the brain is not fully understood, several theories have been suggested including direct and indirect pathways induced by the virus. One possible theory is the invasion of SARS-CoV-2 to the brain occurs either through the bloodstream or via the nerve endings which is considered to be the direct route.Such findings are based on studies reporting the presence of viral material in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain cells.Nevertheless, the indirect mechanisms, including blood-clotting abnormalities and prolonged activation of the immune system, can result in further tissue and organ damages seen during the course of the disease. This overview attempts to give a thorough insight into SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus neurological infection and highlights the possible mechanisms leading to the neurological manifestations observed in infected patients.Muhammad Ali Haidar Zaynab Shakkour Mohammad Amine Reslan Nadine Al-Haj Perla Chamoun Karl Habashy Hasan Kaafarani Shima Shahjouei Sarah HFarran Abdullah Shaito Esber SSaba Bassam Badran Mirna Sabra Firas Kobeissy Maya Bizri 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,6:2
