| 1 | Third generation of vortex identification methods:Omega and Liutex/Rortex based systems显示文摘A vortex is intuitively recognized as the rotational/swirling motion of fluids,but a rigorous and universally-accepted definition is still not available.Vorticity tube/filament has been regarded equivalent to a vortex since Helmholtz proposed the concepts of vorticity tube/filament in 1858 and the vorticity-based methods can be categorized as the first generation of vortex identification methods.During the last three decades,a lot of vortex identification methods,including 0,A,and Aci criteria,have been proposed to overcome the problems associated with the vorticity-based methods.Most of these criteria are based on the Cauchy-Stokes decomposition and/or eigenvalues of the velocity gradient tensor and can be considered as the second generation of vortex identification methods.Starting from 2014,the Vortex and Turbulence Research Team at the University of Texas at Arlington(the UTA team)focus on the development of a new generation of vortex identification methods.The first fruit of this effort,a new Omega(/2)vortex identification method,which defined a vortex as a connected region where the vorticity overtakes the deformation,was published in 2016.In 2017 and 2018,a Liutex(previously called Rortex)vector was proposed to provide a mathematical definition of the local rigid rotation part of the fluid motion,including both the local rotational axis and the rotational strength.Liutex/Rortex is a new physical quantity with scalar,vector and tensor forms exactly representing the local rigid rotation of fluids.Meanwhile,a decomposition of the vorticity to a rotational part namely Liutex/Rortex and an anti-symmetric shear part(RS decomposition)was introduced in 2018,and a universal decomposition of the velocity gradient tensor to a rotation part(7?)and a non-rotation part(NR、was also given in 2018 as a counterpart of the traditional Cauchy-Stokes decomposition.Later in early 2019,a Liutex/Rortex based Omega method called Omega-Liutex,which combines the respective advantages of both Liutex/Rortex and Omega methods,was developed.And a latest objective Omega method,which is still under development,is also briefly introduced.These advances are classified as the third generation of vortex identification methods in the current paper.To elaborate the advantages of the third-generation methods,six core issues for vortex definition and identification have been raised,including:(1)the absolute strength,(2)the relative strength,(3)the rotational axis,(4)the vortex core center location,(5)the vortex core size,(6)the vortex boundary.The new third generation of vortex identification methods can provide reasonable answers to these questions,while other vortex identification methods fail to answer all questions except for the approximation of vortex boundaries.The purpose of the current paper is to summarize the main ideas and methods of the third generation of vortex identification methods rather than to conduct a comprehensive review on the historical development of vortex identification methods. | Chaoqun Liu Yi-sheng Gao Xiang-rui Dong Yi-qian Wang Jian-ming Liu Yu-ning Zhang Xiao-shu Cai Nan Gui | 2019 | Journal of Hydrodynamics2019,31,2: | 82 |

| 3 | Association of Overlapped and Un-overlapped Comorbidities with COVID-19 Severity and Treatment Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study from Nine Provinces in China显示文摘Objective Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear.Methods A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients’ medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI) of the associations between comorbidities(cardiometabolic or non-cardiometabolic diseases), clinical severity, and treatment outcomes of COVID-19.Results Overall, 158(13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32(2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension(2.87, 1.30–6.32), type 2 diabetes(T2 DM)(3.57, 2.32–5.49),cardiovascular disease(CVD)(3.78, 1.81–7.89), fatty liver disease(7.53, 1.96–28.96), hyperlipidemia(2.15, 1.26–3.67), other lung diseases(6.00, 3.01–11.96), and electrolyte imbalance(10.40, 3.00–26.10)were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2 DM(6.07, 2.89–12.75), CVD(8.47,6.03–11.89), and electrolyte imbalance(19.44, 11.47–32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission(5.46,3.25–9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes(6.58, 1.46–29.64) within two weeks.Conclusion Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. | 4 | LBE-DEM coupled simulation of gas-solid two-phase cross jets显示文摘This paper establishes a lattice Boltzmann equation-discrete element method (LBE-DEM) coupled simulation method under the Eulerian-Lagrangian framework at first, and applies it to simulating a two-dimensional gas-solid two-phase cross jet. The gas phase is simulated by the lattice-Boltzmann method via the TD2G9 model; the solid phase is traced by the Lagrangian method and the inter-particle collision is calculated by the DEM method. Three values of the Stokes number St=10, 25, and 50 are simulated under the same mass loading. This paper focuses on the characteristics of vortex structure, particle distribution, and the reverse-flow/rebounding rate in cross jets. We analyze the characteristics of fluid vortex motion, particle cluster distribution, rebounding rate of particles and the influencing factors for them. The results show the existence of joint distribution of discrete clusters and discrete particles in cross jets. Meanwhile, it shows that a larger concentration of particles in the early stage of jet evolution or a smaller Stokes number under the same mass loading can produce a larger rebounding rate. | 5 | Protective Effect of Angiotensin(1-7) on Silicotic Fibrosis in Rats显示文摘Objective Silicosis, caused by inhalation of silica dust, is the most serious occupational disease in China and the aim of present study was to explore the protective effect of Ang (1-7) on silicotic fibrosis and myofibroblast differentiation induced by Ang Ⅱ. Methods HOPE-MED 8050 exposure control apparatus was used to establish the rat silicosis model. Pathological changes and collagen deposition of the lung tissue were examined by H.E. and VG staining, respectively. The localizations of ACE2 and a-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA) in the lung were detected by immunohistochemistry. Expression levels of collagen type Ⅰ, a-SMA, ACE2, and Mas in the lung tissue and fibroblasts were examined by western blot. Levels of ACE2, Ang (1-7), and Ang Ⅱ in serum were determined by ELISA. Co-localization of ACE2 and a-SMA in fibroblasts was detected by immunofluorescenee. Results Ang (1-7) induced pathological changes and enhanced collagen deposition in vivo. Ang (1-7) decreased the expressions of collagen type Ⅰ and a-SMA and increased the expressions of ACE2 and Mas in the silicotic rat lung tissue and fibroblasts stimulated by Ang Ⅱ. Ang (1-7) in creased the levels of ACE2 and Ang (1-7) and decreased the level of Ang Ⅱ in silicotic rat serum. A779 enhanced the protective effect of Ang (1-7) in fibroblasts stimulated by Ang Ⅱ. | 10 | Bone Loss Induced by Simulated Microgravity,Ionizing Radiation and/or Ultradian Rhythms in the Hindlimbs of Rats显示文摘Objective To better understand the pathological causes of bone loss in a space environment, including microgravity, ionizing radiation, and ultradian rhythms. Methods Sprague Dawley(SD) rats were randomly divided into a baseline group, a control group, a hindlimb suspension group, a radiation group, a ultradian rhythms group and a combined-three-factor group. After four weeks of hindlimb suspension followed by X-ray exposure and/or ultradian rhythms, biomechanical properties, bone mineral density, histological analysis, microstructure parameters, and bone turnover markers were detected to evaluate bone loss in hindlimbs of rats. Results Simulated microgravity or combined-three factors treatment led to a significant decrease in the biomechanical properties of bones, reduction in bone mineral density, and deterioration of trabecular parameters. Ionizing radiation exposure also showed adverse impact while ultradian rhythms had no significant effect on these outcomes. Decrease in the concentration of the turnover markers bone alkaline phosphatase(b ALP), osteocalcin(OCN), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5 b(TRAP-5 b) in serum was in line with the changes in trabecular parameters. Conclusion Simulated microgravity is the main contributor of bone loss. Radiation also results in deleterious effects but ultradian rhythms has no significant effect. | 11 | Comparative assessment and analysis of Rortex vortex in swirling jets显示文摘Recently, a new definition, called Rortex, was proposed to quantify the purely rotational motion of fluids. In this work, based on the DNS data, the Rortex is used to assess and visualize the rotational motion and structure of the vortex in swirling jets in comparison with other kinds of vortex criteria, including Q , λ2,vorticity and Ω criteria. The Rortex vector,Ω, Q and criteria are found to be better than the vorticity criterion for the vortex core identification. The vector triangle formed by the Rortex R , the nonrotational shear S , and the vorticity R is analyzed to give mechanical explanations, especially of the effect of the non-rotational shear on the rotation of fluids. In addition, the probability density distributions (PDF) of the Rortex R , the nonrotational shear S, and the vorticity R are computed.
