1Age-related changes in the kinetics of human lenses:prevention of the cataract显示文摘The crystalline lens is a transparent,biconvex structure in the eye that,along with the cornea,helps to refract light to be focused on the retina and,by changing shape,it adjusts focal distance(accommodation).The three classes of structural proteins found in the lens areα,β,and γ crystallins.These proteins make up more than 90% of the total dry mass of the eye lens.Other components which can be found are sugars,lipids,water,several antioxidants and low weight molecules.When ageing changes occur in the lens,it causes a gradual reduction in transparency,presbyopia and an increase in the scattering and aberration of light waves as well as a degradation of the optical quality of the eye.The main changes that occur with aging are: 1) reduced diffusion of water from the outside to the inside of the lens and from its cortical to its nuclear zone; 2)crystalline change due to the accumulation of high molecular weight aggregates and insoluble proteins; 3)production of advanced glycation end products(AGEs),lipid accumulation,reduction of reduced glutathione content and destruction of ascorbic acid.Even if effective strategies in preventing cataract onset are not already known,good results have been reached in some cases with oral administration of antioxidant substances such as caffeine,pyruvic acid,epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG),α-lipoic acid and ascorbic acid.Furthermore,methionine sulfoxide reductase A(MSRA) over expression could protect lens cells both in presence and in absence of oxidative stress-induced damage.Nevertheless,promising results have been obtained by reducing ultraviolet-induced oxidative damage.Nicola Pescosolido Andrea Barbato Rossella Giannotti Chiara Komaiha Fiammetta Lenarduzzi 2016International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2016,9,10:13
2Chronic pancreatitis as presentation of Crohn's disease in a child显示文摘It is reported that a pancreatic disease may precede the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) both in children and in adults.Idiopathic chronic pancreatitis,however,occasionally co-exists with the IBD,mainly at pediatric age.We report a case of a patient who progressively developed the features of a chronic pancreatitis,before the diagnosis of Crohn's Disease(CD).Ten months after the onset of the first episode of pancreatitis the patient developed bloody diarrhea,mucus stools and biochemical findings of inflammation.The colonoscopy revealed a diffuse colitis without involvement of the last loop and the gastroscopy showed inflammation of the iuxta-papillary area.The histological findings confirmed the diagnosis of CD that involved the colon and the duodenum.In conclusion,in children the idiopathic chronic pancreatitis may be an unusual presentation of CD.Thus,if other known cause of chronic pancreatitis are not found,a not invasive work up to exclude the IBD should be warranted.An early coincidental diagnosis of the IBD may delay the progression of the pancreatic disease.Daniela Knafelz Fabio Panetta Lidia Monti Fiammetta Bracci Bronislava Papadatou Giuliano Torre Luigi Dall'Oglio Antonella Diamanti 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,31:2
3Incidence of umbilical vein catheter-associated thrombosis of the portal system: A systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND The use of umbilical venous catheters(UVCs)in the perinatal period may be associated with severe complications,including the occurrence of portal vein thrombosis(PVT).AIM To assess the incidence of UVC-related PVT in infants with postnatal age up to three months.METHODS A systematic and comprehensive database searching(PubMed,Cochrane Library,Scopus,Web of Science)was performed for studies from 1980 to 2020(the search was last updated on November 28,2020).We included in the final analyses all peer-reviewed prospective cohort studies,retrospective cohort studies and casecontrol studies.The reference lists of included articles were hand-searched to identify additional studies of interest.Studies were considered eligible when they included infants with postnatal age up to three months with UVC-associated PVT.Incidence estimates were pooled by using random effects meta-analyses.The quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale.The systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis(PRISMA)guidelines.RESULTS Overall,16 studies were considered eligible and included in the final analyses.The data confirmed the relevant risk of UVC-related thrombosis.The mean pooled incidence of such condition was 12%,although it varied across studies(0%-49%).In 15/16 studies(94%),diagnosis of thrombosis was made accidentally during routine screening controls,whilst in 1/16 study(6%)targeted imaging assessments were carried out in neonates with clinical concerns for a thrombus.Tip position was investigated by abdominal ultrasound(US)alone in 1/16(6%)studies,by a combination of radiography and abdominal US in 14/16(88%)studies and by a combination of radiography,abdominal US and echocardiography in 1/16(6%)studies.CONCLUSION To the best of our knowledge,this is the first systematic review specifically investigating the incidence of UVC-related PVT.The use of UVCs requires a high index of suspicion,because its use is significantly associated with PVT.Well-designed prospective studies are required to assess the optimal approach to prevent UVCrelated thrombosis of the portal system.Iliana Bersani Fiammetta Piersigilli Giulia Iacona Immacolata Savarese Francesca Campi Andrea Dotta Cinzia Auriti Enrico Di Stasio Matteo Garcovich 2021World Journal of Hepatology2021,13,11:1

11Olive fruits infested with olive fly larvae respond with an ethylene burst and the emission of specific volatiles显示文摘Olive fly(Bactrocera oleae R.) is the most harmful insect pest of olive(Olea europaea L.) which strongly affects fruits and oil production. Despite the expanding economic importance of olive cultivation, up to now, only limited information on plant responses to B. oleae is available. Here,we demonstrate that olive fruits respond to B. oleae attack by producing changes in an array of different defensive compounds including phytohormones, volatile organic compounds(VOCs), and defense proteins. Bactrocera oleaeinfested fruits induced a strong ethylene burst and transcript levels of several putative ethylene-responsive transcription factors became significantly upregulated. Moreover, infested fruits induced significant changes in the levels of 12-oxophytodienoic acid and C12 derivatives of the hydroperoxide lyase. The emission of VOCs was also changed quantitatively and qualitatively in insect-damaged fruits, indicating that B.oleae larval feeding can specifically affect the volatile blend offruits. Finally, we show that larval infestation maintained high levels of trypsin protease inhibitors in ripe fruits, probably by affecting post-transcriptional mechanisms. 16Pleomorphic cutaneous xanthomas disclosing homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia显示文摘Homoxygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia is characterized by a presence of several types of cutaneous xanthomas with an abnormal lipid profile. Some of these could be pathognomonic. Although these could be initially interpreted as isolated and localized benign disorders and offered surgical treatment, it has become increasingly clear that they could be a part of a systemic pathology. Here we describe a case of this rare disorder in a 19 years old non-obese young man who presented multiple, intertriginous, tuberous and tendinous xanthomas and had an associated abnormal lipid profile with elevated lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
