| 1 | Incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in outpatients with cirrhosis in Brazil: A 10-year retrospective cohort study显示文摘AIM To determine the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and the impact of HCC surveillance on early diagnosis and survival of cirrhotic outpatients. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, cirrhotic outpatients undergoing HCC surveillance between March 2005 and March 2014 were analyzed. Exclusion criteria were HIV coinfection; previous organ transplantation; diagnosis of HCC at first consultation; missing data in the medical chart; and less than 1 year of follow-up. Surveillance was carried out every six months using ultrasound and serum alpha-fetoprotein determination. Ten-year cumulative incidence and survival were estimated through Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS Four hundred and fifty-three patients were enrolled, of which 57.6% were male. Mean age was 55 years. Hepatitis C virus and heavy use of alcohol were the main etiologic agents of cirrhosis. HCC was diagnosed in 75 patients(16.6%), with an estimated cumulative incidence of 2.6% in the 1st year, 15.4% in the 5th year, and 28.8% in the 10 th year. Median survival was estimated at 17.6 mo in HCC patients compared to 234 mo in non-HCC patients(P < 0.001). Early-stage HCC was more often detected in patients who underwent surveillance every 6 mo or less(P = 0.05). However, survival was not different between patients with early stage vs non-early stage tumors [HR = 0.54(0.15-1.89), P = 0.33].CONCLUSION HCC is a frequent complication in patients with cirrhosis and adherence to surveillance programs favors early diagnosis. | Marcelo Campos Appel-da-Silva Suelen Aparecida da Silva Miozzo Isabella de Azevedo Dossin Cristiane Valle Tovo Fernanda Branco Angelo Alves de Mattos | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,46: | 7 |
| 2 | Noninvasive imaging assessment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease:focus on liver scintigraphy显示文摘Noninvasive diagnoses of nonalcoholic fatty-liver disease(NAFLD) involve the use of serologic markers and imaging methods, such as conventional ultrasonography(US),computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Although these methods are reliable for the noninvasive detection of moderate to severe fatty changes in the liver, they are not reliable for detecting nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) and fibrosis. New imaging technologies, such as US-based transient elastography, acoustic radiation force impulse and magnetic resonancebased elastography, can reportedly be used to determine the severity of liver fibrosis associated with NASH. In this context, the field of nuclear medicine through liver scintigraphy has recently been proposed, and is being explored for use in the diagnosis of NASH. More importantly, nuclear medicine may contribute to the distinction between simple steatosis and NASH. For example, the enhanced release of cytokines and the decrease in the phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells play important roles in the pathogenesis of NASH. Removal of technetium-99 m colloid from circulation by Kupffer cell phagocytosis therefore provides a valuable imaging technique. Thus, nuclear medicine is poised to provide useful tools for the evaluation of patients with NAFLD. However, the evidence is still scarce, and more studies with larger samples are needed to identify their role before they are used in clinical practice. | Cristiane Valle Tovo Angelo Zambam de Mattos Gabriela Perdomo Coral Fernanda Schild Branco Eiji Suwa Angelo Alves de Mattos | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,15: | 5 |
| 3 | Review of anticancer mechanisms of isoquercitin显示文摘This review was based on a literature search of PubM ed and Scielo databases using the keywords 'quercetin,rutin,isoquercitrin,isoquercitin(IQ),quercetin-3-glucoside,bioavailability,flavonols and favonoids, and cancer' and combinations of all the words. We collected relevant scientific publications from 1990 to 2015 about the absorption, bioavailability, chemoprevention activity, and treatment effects as well as the underlying anticancer mechanisms of isoquercitin.Flavonoids are a group of polyphenolic compounds widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. The subclass of flavonols receives special attention owing to their health benefits. The main components of this class are quercetin, rutin, and IQ,which is a flavonoid and although mostly found as a glycoside,is an aglycone(lacks a glycoside side chain). This compound presents similar therapeutic profiles to quercetin but with superior bioavailability, resulting in increased efficacy compared to the aglycone form.IQ has therapeutic applications owing to its wide range of pharmacological effects including antioxidant,antiproliferative,anti-inflammatory,anti-hypertensive,and anti-diabetic.The protective effects of IQ in cancer may be due to actions on lipid peroxidation. In addition, the antitumor effect of IQ and its underlying mechanism are related to interactions with Wnt signaling pathway,mixed-lineage protein kinase 3,mitogen-activated protein kinase, apoptotic pathways,as well proinflammatory protein signaling. This review contributed to clarifying the mechanisms of absorption, metabolism, and actions of IQ and isoquercitrin in cancer. | Guilherme di Camillo Orfali Ana Carolina Duarte Vivien Bonadio Natalia Peres Martinez Maria Elisa Melo Branco de Araújo Fernanda Bruschi Marinho Priviero Patricia Oliveira Carvalho Denise Gon?alves Priolli | 2016 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2016,7,2: | 4 |

| 5 | Ionic liquid-loaded microcapsules doped into dental resin infiltrants显示文摘Resin infiltrants have been effectively applied in dentistry to manage non-cavitated carious lesions in proximal dental surfaces. However, the common formulations are composed of inert methacrylate monomers. In this study,we developed a novel resin infiltrant with microcapsules loaded with an ionic liquid(MC-IL),and analyzed the physical properties and cytotoxicity of the dental resin.First, the ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide(BMI.NTf2)was synthesized.BMI.NTf2 has previously shown antibacterial activity in a dental resin.Then,MC-IL were synthesized by the deposition of a preformed polymer. The MC-IL were analyzed for particle size and de-agglomeration effect via laser diffraction analysis and shape via scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The infiltrants were formulated, and the MC-IL were incorporated at 2.5%,5%,and 10 wt%.A group without MC-IL was used as a control. The infiltrants were evaluated for ultimate tensile strength(UTS),contact angle, surface free energy(SFE),and cytotoxicity. The MC-IL showed a mean particle size of 1.64(±0.08)μm,shriveled aspect, and a de-agglomeration profile suggestive of nanoparticles’presence in the synthesized powder. There were no differences in UTS among groups(p>0.05).The incorporation of 10 wt%of MC-IL increased the contact angle(p<0.05),while the addition from 5 wt%reduced the SFE in comparison to the control group(p<0.05).The human cell viability was above 90%for all groups(p>0.05).The incorporation of microcapsules as a drug-delivery system for ionic liquids may be a promising strategy to improve dental restorative materials. | Marla Cuppini Isadora Martini Garcia Virgínia Serra de Souza Kelly Cristine Zatta Fernanda Visioli Vicente Castelo Branco Leitune Sílvia Stanisçuazki Guterres Jackson Damiani Scholten Fabrício Mezzomo Collares | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,9: | 0 |
