Bioprospecting for anti-Streptococcus mutans:The activity of 10% Sesbania grandiflora flower extract comparable to erythromycin显示文摘Objective:To search an herbal material, capable of inhibiting plaque producing bacteria Streptococcus mutans. Methods:Twenty materials comprising 10 flowers and 10 rhizomes were extracted with70% ethanol.Their activity was then examined at a concentration of 10%(w/v) against Streptococcus mutans in vitro on Mueller–Hinton media.Erythromycin(Oxoid,20 mg disc) was used as a positive control.Meanwhile,to establish a fingerprint guide for authentication or quality control, the most potent material was further analyzed regarding its chemical constituents by means of reversed phase-high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and thin-layer chromatography(TLC).Results:Of the tested samples,Sesbania grandiflora(S.grandiflora) flower and Costus speciosus rhizome extracts showed the most potent activity with inhibited zone diameters of 18.5 and 14.8 mm,respectively. On the other hand, other extract plants showed a diameter zone in the range of 0.5–10.6 mm or being inactive(diameter=0 mm).The activity of S.grandiflora was comparable to that of erythromycin(diameter=18.0 mm).The best separation was achieved on HPLC system with acetonitrile-water with a ratio of2:8,and a flow rate at 0.5 m L/min.TLC,meanwhile,was featured on chloroform–methanol(8.5:1.5) as a mobile system.Conclusions:S.grandiflora flower is a promising material to be developed as the active ingredient of anti-plaque toothpaste as well as mouthwash solution. The developed HPLC and TLC system can be used for a further standard in its material authentication as well as for a fingerprinting of quality control during the manufacturing process.Azis Saifudin Alfian Mahardika Forentin Arini Fadhilah Kuswandi Tirtodiharjo Witri Dyah Melani Devita Widyasari Tri Agus Saroso 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,9:0
Inhibition mechanisms of secretome proteins from Paenibacillus polymyxa Kp10 and Lactococcus lactis Gh1 against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus显示文摘Objective:To determine the inhibition mechanisms of secretome protein extracted from Paenibacillus polymyxa Kp10(Kp10)and Lactococcus lactis Gh1(Gh1)against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus(VRE).Methods:The sensitivity and viability of MRSA and VRE treated with secretome proteins of Kp10 and Gh1 were determined using minimal inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, and time-to-kill assays. The morphological changes were observed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. To elucidate the antimicrobial mechanism of secretome protein of Kp10 and Gh1 against MRSA and VRE,2D gel proteomic analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was run by comparing upregulated and downregulated proteins, and the proton motive force study including the efflux of ATP,pH gradient, and the membrane potential study were conducted. Results:MRSA and VRE were sensitive to Kp10 and Gh1 secretome protein extracts and displayed apparent morphological and internal composition changes.Several proteins associated with cellular component functions were either downregulated or upregulated in treated MRSA and VRE by changing the membrane potential gradient.Conclusions:Kp10 and Gh1 secretome proteins reduce the growth of VRE and MRSA by damaging the cell membrane.Cell division, cell wall biosynthesis, and protein synthesis are involved in the inhibition mechanism.Nurul Hana Zainal Baharin Nur Fadhilah Khairil Mokhtar Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa Nurul Diana Dzaraly AbdulRahman Muthanna Mazen M.Jamil Al-Obaidi Mohd Hafis Yuswan Sahar Abbasiliasi Norasfaliza Rahmad Wan Ahmad Kamil Wan Nur Ismah Amalia Mohd Hashim Shuhaimi Mustafa 2022Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2022,12,11:0
Optimized synthesis and photovoltaic performance of TiO_2 nanoparticles for dye-sensitized solar cell显示文摘This paper presents response surface methodology(RSM) as an efficient approach for modeling and optimizingTiO_2 nanoparticles preparation via co-precipitation for dye-sensitized solar cell(DSSC) performance.Titanium(Ⅳ) bis-(acetylacetonate) di-isopropoxide(DIPBAT).isopropanol and water were used as precursor, solvent and co-solvent,respectively.Molar ratio of water, aging temperature and calcination temperature as preparation factors with main and interaction effects on particle characteristics and performances were investigated.Particle characteristics in terms of primary and secondary sizes, crystal orientation and morphology were determined by X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Band gap energy and power conversion efficiency of DSSCs were used for performance studies.According to analysis of variance(ANOVA) in response surface methodology(RSM),all three independent parameters were statistically significant and the final model was accurate. The model predicted maximum power conversion efficiency(0.14%) under the optimal condition of molar ratio of DIPBAT-to-isopropanol-to-water of 1:10:500,aging temperature of 36℃ and calcination temperature of400℃.A second set of data was adopted to validate the model at optimal conditions and was found to be0.14±0.015%,which was very close to the predicted value. This study proves the reliability of the model in identifying the optimal condition for maximum performance.Siti Nur Fadhilah Zainudin Masturah Markom Huda Abdullah Renata Adami Siti Masrinda Tasirin 2013Particuology2013,11,6:0
Ibn Khaldun’s Theory of ‘Asabiyyah and Its Impact on the Current Muslim Community显示文摘This paper seeks to study the theory of ‘asabiyyah by Ibn Khaldun, a well-known North African historiographer from 14th century. It examines Ibn Khaldun’s original thoughts on ‘asabiyyah and how he did retool it for the beneficial purposes. At the same time, the paper tries to compare the term of ‘asabiyyah as proposed by Ibn Khaldun with the interpretation made by the West in the current world. This study also will give some inputs on the implementation of Ibn Khaldun’s theory of ‘asabiyyah, and it will expose how the theory could benefit the Muslim civilization to soar as a great nation. The descriptive method has been used in this study to present the right information about Ibn Khaldun and his theory. It is hoped that this study could enhance our understanding on the term of ‘asabiyyah in its positive connotation, as the term has been recognized negatively among people today.Nurul Fadhilah Binti Ismail Adibah Binti Abdul Rahim 2018Journalism and Mass Communication2018,8,6:0
Spontaneous Subdural Hemorrhage due to Ruptured Arteriovenous Malformation in a Child显示文摘Spontaneous subdural hemorrhage(SDH)is an uncommon nontraumatic bleed of the brain, involving the dura and arachnoid mater.SDH commonly occurs due to tearing of bridging veins;however,SDH from the rupture of arteriovenous malformation(AVM)is an uncommon phenomenon, particularly in children. We report a case of atypical SDH in a 1-year-old child with AVM and a history of alleged abuse.Autopsy revealed SDH in the right parietal and middle cranial fossa without any external or internal injuries to the head, brain,or other parts of the body.Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the brain tissue revealed an abnormal distribution of arteries and veins of various sizes and architecture. From a detailed histopathological examination of the brain and meticulous investigation of vascular abnormalities,we conclude the cause of acute SDH to be due to a ruptured AVM.Nor Fadhilah Madon Ahmad Hafizam Hasmi Khairul Anuar Zainun Hapizah Mohd Nawawi 2018Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine2018,4,3:0
A review of salivary composition changes induced by fasting and its impact on health显示文摘Human saliva is an indispensable fluid that maintains a healthy oral cavity which otherwise can lead to oral diseases(dental caries and periodontitis). In addition, salivary metabolites and microbiome profile provide early detection of systemic diseases such as cancer and obesity.Salivary diagnostic has gained popularity due to its non-invasive sampling technique.Fasting(abstinence from food or drink or both)research for weight loss and improve health is common, but studies using fasting saliva are scarce. Some metabolites in fasting saliva have been reported with interesting results, which can be enhanced by considering different confounding factors. For example, fasting saliva contains higher salivary nitrite, which is related to nitric oxide(NO).NO is a vasodilator supporting the healthy function of endothelial cells and its deficiency is connected to many diseases. The timely supply of NO through exogenous and endogenous means is highlighted and the potential advantage of fasting salivary composition changes in relation to COVID-19 infection is speculated. This review aims to provide a general discussion on the salivary composition, properties, and functions of the whole saliva, including the health benefits of fasting.Nurul Fadhilah Kamalul Aripin NIdayu Zahid Mohd Aizat Abdul Rahim Hashim Yaacob Parvez I.Haris Zubaidah Haji AbdRahim Rauzah Hashim 2024Food Science and Human Wellness2024,13,1:0
