Olive oil consumption and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘The clinical implications of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases(NAFLD)derive from their potential to progress to fibrosis and cirrhosis.Inappropriate dietary fat intake, excessive intake of soft drinks, insulin resistance and increased oxidative stress results in increased free fatty acid delivery to the liver and increased hepatic triglyceride(TG)accumulation. An olive oil-rich diet decreases accumulation of TGs in the liver, improves postprandial TGs,glucose and glucagonlike peptide-1 responses in insulin-resistant subjects, and upregulates glucose transporter-2 expression in the liver. The principal mechanisms include:decreased nuclear factor-kappaB activation, decreased lowdensity lipoprotein oxidation, and improved insulin resistance by reduced production of inflammatory cytokines(tumor necrosis factor,interleukin-6)and improvement of jun N-terminal kinase-mediated phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1.The beneficial effect of the Mediterranean diet is derived from monounsaturated fatty acids, mainly from olive oil.In this review,we describe the dietary sources of the monounsaturated fatty acids, the composition of olive oil, dietary fats and their relationship to insulin resistance and postprandial lipid and glucose responses in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, clinical and experimental studies that assess the relationship between olive oil and NAFLD,and the mechanism by which olive oil ameliorates fatty liver, and we discuss future perspectives.Nimer Assy Faris Nassar Gattas Nasser Maria Grosovski 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,15:22
Vibrational characteristics of piping system in air conditioning outdoor unit显示文摘The modal analysis of piping system in air conditioner (AC) outdoor unit is essential to investigate the vibration properties of the system. In view of the growing significance of numerical finite element (FE) model for vibration behaviour prediction, the AC piping elastic end support characterization has been explored. The axial and radial stiffness variables (ka, kr1, kr2) of the compressor-piping mounting are obtained and represented by dynamic stiffness of compressor grommet. They are obtained from dynamic load deflection test based on compressor operating condition such as excitation frequency and amplitude. The unknown stiffness variables of the other tube end (chassis-piping mounting) are determined by parameter fine tuning. An experimental modal analysis using impact hammer test has also been employed to determine the vibration properties such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratio of the piping structures. The modal parameters acquisition using SCADAS mobile acquisition system and LMS Impact Testing software is compared with the corresponding simulated modal properties using Abaqus. Most of the simulated natural frequencies achieve good correlation with the measured frequencies and it is reasonably a good prediction model to predict vibration behaviour of AC piping structures.S. 3Finite element analysis on the static and fatigue characteristics of composite multi-leaf spring显示文摘This paper investigated the static and fatigue behaviors of steel and composite multi-leaf spring using the ANSYS V12 software. The dimensions of an existing conventional leaf spring of a light commercial vehicle were used. The same dimensions were used to design composite multi-leaf spring for the two materials, E-glass fiber/epoxy and E-glass fiber/vinyl ester, which are of great interest to the transportation industry. Main consideration was given to the effects of material composition and its fiber orientation on the static and fatigue behaviors of leaf spring. The design constraints were bending stresses, deflection and fatigue life. Compared to the steel leaf spring, the designed composite spring has much lower bending stresses and deflections and higher fatigue life cycles.Joo-teck Jeffrey KUEH Tarlochan FARIS 2012Journal of Zhejiang University-Science A(Applied Physics & Engineering)2012,13,3:14
Synchronization and wave propagation in neuronal network under field coupling显示文摘Electric and chemical synapse play important role in connecting neurons and thus signal propagation can be realized between neurons. External electric stimulus can change the excitability of neuron and then the electrical activities can be modulated completely. Continuous fluctuation of ion concentration in cell can induce complex time-varying electromagnetic field during the exchange of charged ions across the membrane of neuron. Polarization and magnetization in the media(and neuron), which exposed to electromagnetic radiation, can modulate the dynamical response and mode transition in electrical activities of neurons. In this paper, magnetic flux is used to describe the effect of electromagnetic field, and the three-variable HindmarshRose neuron model is updated to propose a four-variable neuron model that the effect of electromagnetic induction and radiation can be explained. Based on the physical law of electromagnetic induction, exchange of charged ions and flow of ion currents will change the distribution of electromagnetic filed in cell, and each neuron will be exposed to the superimposed field triggered by other neurons. Therefore, signal exchange could occur even synapse coupling between neurons is removed in the case of field coupling. A chain network is proposed to investigate the signal exchange between neurons under field coupling when synapse coupling is not available. It is found that field coupling between neurons can change the collective behaviors in electrical activities. A statistical factor of synchronization and spatial patterns are calculated, these results confirmed that field coupling is effective for signal communication between neurons. In the end, open problems are suggested for readers' extensive guidance in this field.LV Mi MA Jun YAO YuanGen ALZAHRANI Faris 2019Science China(Technological Sciences)2019,62,3:12

A review of chemical absorption of carbon dioxide for biogas upgrading显示文摘Significant attention has been given to biogas production, purification and upgrading as a renewable and clean fuel supplement. Biogas is a product of an anaerobic digestion process comprising methane, carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases. Biogas purification removes trace gases in biogas for safe utilisation. Biogas upgrading produces methane-rich biogas by removing bulk carbon dioxide from the gas mixture. Several carbon dioxide removal techniques can be applied for biogas upgrading. However, chemical absorption of carbon dioxide for biogas upgrading is of special significance due to its operation at ambient or near ambient temperature and pressure, thus reducing energy consumption. This paper reviews the chemical absorption of carbon dioxide using amine scrubbing, caustic solvent scrubbing, and amino acid salt solution scrubbing. Each of these techniques for biogas upgrading is discussed. The paper concludes that an optimised implementation of the chemical absorption techniques for biogas upgrading requires further research.Fouad R.H. 7Correlation between the skull base fracture and the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage in patients w让h traumatic brain injury显示文摘Purpose:A head injury(HI)may cause a skull fracture, which may or may not be associated with injury to the brain. In essence,a skull base fracture(SBF)is a linear fracture at the base of the skull.Loss of consciousness and Glasgow coma score(GCS)may vary depending on an associated intracranial pathology. The pathomechanism is believed to be caused by high energy impact directly to the mastoid and supraorbital bone or indirectly from the cranial vault.Aim of this study is to define the correlation between SBF and intracranial hemorrhage(ICH)in patients with HI.Methods:Analysis of data obtained from a retrospective review of medical records and from a systematized database pertaining to diagnostic criteria of SBF patients based only on clinical symptoms associated with ICH caused by HI treated in the Department of Neurosurgery at Dr.Hasan Sadikin Hospital,Bandung,Indonesia from January 1,2012 to December 31,2017.The exclusion criteria in eluded age less than 15 years and no head computed tomography(CT)scan examination provided. Results:A total of 9006 patients were in eluded into this study in which they were divided into 3 groups:group 1,HI with no ICH;group 2,HI with single ICH and group 3,HI with multiple ICH.In all the SBF cases,SBF at anterior fossa accounted for 69.40%of them, which were mostly accompanied with mild HI(64.70%).Severity of HI and site of SBF correlated with the existence of traumatic brain lesions on CT scan, thus these factors were able to predict whether there were traumatic brain lesions or not. Most of the patients with epidural hemorrhage(EDH)has single traumatic lesion on CT scan, whereas most of the patients with cerebral contusion(CC)has multiple traumatic lesions on CT scan.On patients with both traumatic brain injury and SBF,most of the patients with anterior fossa SBF has EDH;whereas most of the patients with middle fossa SBF were accompanied with CC.Surgery was not required for most of the patients with SBF.Conclusion:SBFs were strongly correlated with traumatic ICH lesions patients with anterior fossa SBF were more likely to suffer EDH whereas with middle fossa SBF were more likely to suffer CC.Ahmad Faried Danny Halim Ingrid Ayke Widjaya Rendy Febrian Badri Syailendra Fii Sulaiman Muhammad Z.Arifin 2019Chinese Journal of Traumatology2019,22,5:3
A Software-in-the-Loop Implementation of Adaptive Formation Control for Fixed-Wing UAVs显示文摘This paper discusses the design and software-in-theloop implementation of adaptive formation controllers for fixedwing unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) with parametric uncertainty in their structure, namely uncertain mass and inertia. In fact, when aiming at autonomous flight, such parameters cannot assumed to be known as they might vary during the mission(e.g.depending on the payload). Modeling and autopilot design for such autonomous fixed-wing UAVs are presented. The modeling is implemented in Matlab, while the autopilot is based on ArduPilot, a popular open-source autopilot suite. Specifically, the ArduP ilot functionalities are emulated in Matlab according to the Ardupilot documentation and code, which allows us to perform software-in-the-loop simulations of teams of UAVs embedded with actual autopilot protocols. An overview of realtime path planning, trajectory tracking and formation control resulting from the proposed platform is given. The software-inthe-loop simulations show the capability of achieving different UAV formations while handling uncertain mass and inertia.Jun Yang Ximan Wang Simone Baldi Satish Singh Stefano Fari 2019IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2019,6,5:3
A new photosensitive neuron model and its dynamics显示文摘Biological neurons can receive inputs and capture a variety of external stimuli, which can be encoded and transmitted as different electric signals. Thus, the membrane potential is adjusted to activate the appropriate firing modes.Indeed, reliable neuron models should take intrinsic biophysical effects and functional encoding into consideration. One fascinating and important question is the physical mechanism for the transcription of external signals.External signals can be transmitted as a transmembrane current or a signal voltage for generating action potentials. We present a photosensitive neuron model to estimate the nonlinear encoding and responses of neurons driven by external optical signals. In the model,a photocell(phototube)is used to activate a simple FitzHugh-Nagumo(FHN)neuron,and then external optical signals(illumination)are imposed to excite the photocell for generating a time-varying current/voltage source. The photocell-coupled FHN neuron can therefore capture and encode external optical signals, similar to artificial eyes.We also present detailed bifurcation analysis for estimating the mode transition and firing pattern selection of neuronal electrical activities. The sampled time series can reproduce the main characteristics of biological neurons(quiescent, spiking, bursting, and even chaotic behaviors)by activating the photocell in the neural circuit. These results could be helpful in giving possible guidance for studying neurodynamics and applying neural circuits to detect optical signals.Yong LIU Wan-jiang XU Jun MA Faris ALZAHRANI Aatef HOBINY 2020Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering2020,21,9:3
Intra-and inter-species variations in carbon content of 14 major tree species in Northeast China显示文摘Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the major challenges in combating global warming.Carbon, including in the form of carbon dioxide(CO_(2)),is considered an essential greenhouse gas under human control to demonstrate success in emission reductions. However, many carbon stock quantifications in forest ecosystems still rely on the estimated 50%carbon content instead of more precise species-,tissue-and site-specific values. Thus, this study aimed to thoroughly measure and analyze the carbon content and variability using the 14 major tree species in Northeast China.Over 600 trees were destructively sampled from three different major mountainous regions(i.e.,the Changbai,Daxing’an,and Xiaoxing’an mountains),and the carbon contents of each species were precisely measured to the sub-tissue level.Carbon contents varied significantly between species, with foliage carbon mostly found to be the highest, while root carbon contents were the lowest.Average carbon contents can be ranked as:Ulmus laciniata(43.4%)Faris Rafi Almay Widagdo Fengri Li Longfei Xie Lihu Dong 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,6:2

Enhancing the surface hardness and roughness of engine blades using the shot peening process显示文摘The effects of shot peening on the mechanical properties of steel 1070 were studied to enhance the material’s properties and surface characteristics. In this study, pressure and exposure time were the main parameters governing surface hardness and surface roughness. The optimal time duration and pressure were determined after several experimental trials.Changes in hardness and surface roughness were monitored as the pressure of the shot and the exposure time were varied.Furthermore, the microstructure was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and the images were enhanced by image processing techniques to evaluate the surface changes.Pareto charts were constructed to estimate the effects of pressure and time on both surface hardness and surface roughness. The novelty of this study is the concentration on engine blades which are frequently used in aircrafts to determine the optimal time–pressure combination for shot peening to achieve suitable mechanical and surface properties. The results show that shot peening pressure(up to 482.6 kPa for 7 min)has positive effect on enhancing the surface and mechanical properties for steel 1070 blades;however,an increase in either pressure or time above that level adversely affected both surface hardness and surface roughness.Mohammad A.Omari Hamzah M.Mousa Faris M.AL-Oqla Mohammad Aljarrah 2019International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2019,26,8:2
Comparison of half-molar sodium lactate and mannitol to treat brain edema in severe traumatic brain injury:A systematic review显示文摘Purpose:Hypertonic fluids such as mannitol and half-molar sodium lactate are given to treat intracranial hypertension in patients with severe traumatic brain injury(TBI).In this study, sodium lactate was compared to mannitol in patients with TBI to investigate the efficacy in reducing intracranial pressure(ICP).Methods:This study was a systematic review with literature research on articles published in any year in the databases of PubMed,ScienceDirect,Asian Journal of Neurosurgery, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The keywords were'half-molar sodium lactate','mannitol','cerebral edema or brain swelling',and'severe traumatic brain injury'.The inclusion criteria were(1)studies published in English,(2)randomized control trials or retrospective/prospective studies on TBI patients,and(3)therapies including half-molar sodium lactate and mannitol and(4)sufficient data such as mean difference(MD)and risk ratio(RR).Data analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.3.Results:From 1499 studies,a total of 8 studies were eligible.Mannitol group reduced ICP of 0.65 times(MD 0.65;p=0.64)and improved cerebral perfusion pressure of 0.61 times(MD 0.61;p=0.88),better than the half-molar group of sodium lactate. But the half-molar group of sodium lactate maintained the mean arterial pressure level of 0.86 times, better than the mannitol group(MD 0.86;p=0.09).Conclusion:Half-molar sodium lactate is as effective as mannitol in reducing ICP in the early phase of brain injury, superior over mannitol in an extended period. It is able to prevent intracranial hypertension and give better brain tissue perfusion as well as more stable hemodynamics.Blood osmolarity is a concern as it increases serum sodium.Abdul Hafid Bajamal Tedy Apriawan I.G.M.Aswin R.Ranuh Franco Servadei Muhammad Faris Asra Al Fauzi 2021Chinese Journal of Traumatology2021,24,6:2
