| 2 | Development of a new connection for precast concrete walls subjected to cyclic loading显示文摘The Industrialized Building System(IBS) was recently introduced to minimize the time and cost of project construction.Accordingly, ensuring the integration of the connection of precast components in IBS structures is an important factor that ensures stability of buildings subjected to dynamic loads from earthquakes, vehicles, and machineries.However, structural engineers still lack knowledge on the proper connection and detailed joints of IBS structure construction.Therefore, this study proposes a special precast concrete wall-to-wall connection system for dynamic loads that resists multidirectional imposed loads and reduces vibration effects(PI2014701723).This system is designed to connect two adjacent precast wall panels by using two steel U-shaped channels(i.e., male and female joints).During casting, each joint is adapted for incorporation into a respective wall panel after considering the following conditions: one side of the steel channel opens into the thickness face of the panel; a U-shaped rubber is implemented between the two channels to dissipate the vibration effect; and bolts and nuts are used to create an extension between the two U-shaped male and female steel channels.The developed finite element model of the precast wall is subjected to cyclic loads to evaluate the performance of the proposed connection during an imposed dynamic load.Connection performance is then compared with conventional connections based on the energy dissipation, stress, deformation, and concrete damage in the plastic range.The proposed precast connection is capable of exceeding the energy absorption of precast walls subjected to dynamic load, thereby improving its resistance behavior in all principal directions. | Ramin Vaghei Farzad Hejazi Hafez Taheri Mohd Saleh Jaafar Farah Nora Aznieta Abdul Aziz | 2017 | Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2017,16,1: | 8 |
| 3 | Regulatory control of the Na-Cl co-transporter NCC and its therapeutic potential for hypertension显示文摘Hypertension is the largest risk factor for cardiovascular disease,the leading cause of mortality worldwide.As blood pressure regulation is influenced by multiple physiological systems,hypertension cannot be attributed to a single identifiable etiology.Three decades of research into Mendelian forms of hypertension implicated alterations in the renal tubular sodium handling,particularly the distal convoluted tubule(DCT)-native,thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter(NCC).Altered functions of the NCC have shown to have profound effects on blood pressure regulation as illustrated by the over activation and inactivation of the NCC in Gordon’s and Gitelman syndromes respectively.Substantial progress has uncovered multiple factors that affect the expression and activity of the NCC.In particular,NCC activity is controlled by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation,and NCC expression is facilitated by glycosylation and negatively regulated by ubiquitination.Studies have even found parvalbumin to be an unexpected regulator of the NCC.In recent years,there have been considerable advances in our understanding of NCC control mechanisms,particularly via the pathway containing the with-no-lysine[K](WNK)and its downstream target kinases,SPS/Ste20-related proline-alanine-rich kinase(SPAK)and oxidative stress responsive 1(OSR1),which has led to the discovery of novel inhibitory molecules.This review summarizes the currently reported regulatory mechanisms of the NCC and discusses their potential as therapeutic targets for treating hypertension. | Nur Farah Meor Azlan Maarten P.Koeners Jinwei Zhang | 2021 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,5: | 6 |
| 4 | Old vs new: Risk factors predicting early onset colorectal cancer显示文摘BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the second leading cause of all cancer related deaths in the United States and Europe.Although the incidence has been decreasing for individuals’≥50,it has been on the rise for individuals<50.AIM To identify potential risk factors for early-onset CRC.METHODS A population-based cohort analysis using a national database,Explorys,screened all patients with an active electronic medical record from January 2012 to December 2016 with a diagnosis of CRC.Subgroups were stratified based on age(25–49 years vs≥50 years).Demographics,comorbidities,and symptom profiles were recorded and compared between both age groups.Furthermore,the younger group was also compared with a control group consisting of individuals aged 25-49 years within the same timeframe without a diagnosis of CRC.Twentydata points for CRC related factors were analyzed to identify potential risk factors specific to early-onset CRC.RESULTS A total of 68860 patients were identified with CRC,of which 5710(8.3%)were younger than 50 years old,with 4140(73%)between 40-49 years of age.Multivariable analysis was reported using odds ratio(OR)with 95%CI and demonstrated that several factors were associated with an increased risk of CRC in the early-onset group versus the later-onset group.These factors included:African-American race(OR 1.18,95%CI:1.09-1.27,P<0.001),presenting symptoms of abdominal pain(OR 1.82,95%CI:1.72-1.92,P<0.001),rectal pain(OR 1.50,95%CI:1.28-1.77,P<0.001),altered bowel function(OR 1.12,95%CI:1.05-1.19,P=0.0005),having a family history of any cancer(OR 1.78,95%CI:1.67-1.90,P<0.001),gastrointestinal(GI)malignancy(OR 2.36,95%CI:2.18-2.55,P<0.001),polyps(OR 1.41,95%CI:1.08-1.20,P<0.001),and obesity(OR 1.14,95%CI:1.08-1.20,P<0.001).Comparing the early-onset cohort versus the control group,factors that were associated with an increased risk of CRC were:male gender(OR 1.34,95%CI:1.27-1.41),P<0.001),Caucasian(OR 1.48,95%CI:1.40-1.57,P<0.001)and African-American race(OR 1.25,95%CI:1.17-1.35,P<0.001),presenting symptoms of abdominal pain(OR 4.73,95%CI:4.49-4.98,P<0.001),rectal pain(OR 7.48,95%CI:6.42-8.72,P<0.001),altered bowel function(OR 5.51,95%CI:5.19-5.85,P<0.001),rectal bleeding(OR 9.83,95%CI:9.12-10.6,P<0.001),weight loss(OR 7.43,95%CI:6.77-8.15,P<0.001),having a family history of cancer(OR 11.66,95%CI:10.97-12.39,P<0.001),GI malignancy(OR 28.67,95%CI:26.64-30.86,P<0.001),polyps(OR 8.15,95%CI:6.31-10.52,P<0.001),tobacco use(OR 2.46,95%CI:2.33-2.59,P<0.001),alcohol use(OR 1.71,95%CI:1.62-1.80,P<0.001),presence of colitis(OR 4.10,95%CI:3.79-4.43,P<0.001),and obesity(OR 2.88,95%CI:2.74-3.04,P<0.001).CONCLUSION Pending further investigation,these potential risk factors should lower the threshold of suspicion for early CRC and potentially be used to optimize guidelines for early screening. | Aslam R Syed Payal Thakkar Zachary D Horne Heitham Abdul-Baki Gursimran Kochhar Katie Farah Shyam Thakkar | 2019 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2019,11,11: | 6 |
| 5 | Distribution of different hepatitis C virus genotypes in patients with hepatitis C virus infection显示文摘AIM:To investigate the presence of mixed infection and discrepancy between hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotypes in plasma,peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs),and liver biopsy specimens.METHODS:From September 2008 up to April 2009,133 patients with chronic hepatitis C referred to Firouzgar Hospital for initiation of an antiviral therapy were recruited in the study.Five milliliters of peripheral blood was collected from each patient and liver biopsy was performed in those who gave consent or had indications.HCV genotyping was done using INNO-LiPATM HCV in serum,PBMCs,and liver biopsy specimens and then conf irmed by sequencing of 5'-UTR fragments.RESULTS:The mean age of patients was 30.3 ± 17.1 years.Multiple transfusion was seen in 124(93.2%) of patients.Multiple HCV genotypes were found in 3(2.3%) of 133 plasma samples,9(6.8%) of 133 PBMC samples,and 8(18.2%) of 44 liver biopsy specimens.It is notable that the different genotypes found in PBMCs were not the same as those found in plasma and liver biopsy specimens.CONCLUSION:Our study shows that a signif icant proportion of patients with chronic hepatitis C are affected by multiple HCV genotypes which may not be detectable only in serum of patients. | Farah Bokharaei Salim Hossein Keyvani Afsaneh Amiri Fatemeh Jahanbakhsh Sef idi Ramin Shakeri Farhad Zamani | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,16: | 5 |
| 6 | Multiphase computed tomography radiomics of pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms to predict malignancy显示文摘BACKGROUND Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(IPMNs)are non-invasive pancreatic precursor lesions that can potentially develop into invasive pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.Currently,the International Consensus Guidelines(ICG)for IPMNs provides the basis for evaluating suspected IPMNs on computed tomography(CT)imaging.Despite using the ICG,it remains challenging to accurately predict whether IPMNs harbor high grade or invasive disease which would warrant surgical resection.A supplementary quantitative radiological tool,radiomics,may improve diagnostic accuracy of radiological evaluation of IPMNs.We hypothesized that using CT whole lesion radiomics features in conjunction with the ICG could improve the diagnostic accuracy of predicting IPMN histology.AIM To evaluate whole lesion CT radiomic analysis of IPMNs for predicting malignant histology compared to International Consensus Guidelines.METHODS Fifty-one subjects who had pancreatic surgical resection at our institution with histology demonstrating IPMN and available preoperative CT imaging were included in this retrospective cohort.Whole lesion semi-automated segmentation was performed on each preoperative CT using Healthmyne software(Healthmyne,Madison,WI).Thirty-nine relevant radiomic features were extracted from each lesion on each available contrast phase.Univariate analysis of the 39 radiomics features was performed for each contrast phase and values were compared between malignant and benign IPMN groups using logistic regression.Conventional quantitative and qualitative CT measurements were also compared between groups,viaχ2(categorical)and Mann Whitney U(continuous)variables.RESULTS Twenty-nine subjects(15 males,age 71±9 years)with high grade or invasive tumor histology comprised the'malignant'cohort,while 22 subjects(11 males,age 70±7 years)with low grade tumor histology were included in the'benign'cohort.Radiomic analysis showed 18/39 precontrast,19/39 arterial phase,and 21/39 venous phase features differentiated malignant from benign IPMNs(P<0.05).Multivariate analysis including only ICG criteria yielded two significant variables:thickened and enhancing cyst wall and enhancing mural nodule<5 mm with an AUC(95%CI)of 0.817(0.709-0.926).Multivariable post contrast radiomics achieved an AUC(95%CI)of 0.87(0.767-0.974)for a model including arterial phase radiomics features and 0.834(0.716-0.953)for a model including venous phase radiomics features.Combined multivariable model including conventional variables and arterial phase radiomics features achieved an AUC(95%CI)of 0.93(0.85-1.0)with a 5-fold cross validation AUC of 0.90.CONCLUSION Multi-phase CT radiomics evaluation could play a role in improving predictive capability in diagnosing malignancy in IPMNs.Future larger studies may help determine the clinical significance of our findings. | Stuart L Polk Jung W Choi Melissa J McGettigan Trevor Rose Abraham Ahmed Jongphil Kim Kun Jiang Yoganand Balagurunathan Jin Qi Paola T Farah Alisha Rathi Jennifer B Permuth Daniel Jeong | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,24: | 5 |

| 11 | Investigation of physico-chemical properties and microbial community during poultry manure co-composting process显示文摘Co-composting of poultry manure and rubber wood sawdust was performed with the ratio of 2:1(V/V) for a period of 60 days. An investigation was carried out to study the extracellular enzymatic activities and structural degradation utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis(TG/DTA)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The microbial succession was also determined by using denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis(DGGE). The compost was able to reach its highest temperature of 71°C at day 3 and stabilized between 30 and 40°C for 8 weeks.CMCase, FPase and β-glucosidase acted synergistically in order to degrade the cellulosic substrate. The xylanase activities increased gradually during the composting and reached the peak value of 11.637 U/g on day 35, followed by a sharp decline. Both Li P and Mn P activities reached their peak values on day 35 with 0.431 and 0.132 U/g respectively. The FT-IR spectra revealed an increase in aromaticity and a decrease in aliphatic compounds such as carbohydrates as decomposition proceeded. TGA/DTG data exhibited significant changes in weight loss in compost samples, indicating degradation of organic matter. SEM micrographs showed higher amounts of parenchyma exposed on the surface of rubber wood sawdust at day 60, showing significant degradation. DGGE and 16 S r DNA analyses showed that Burkholderia sp., Pandoraea sp., and Pseudomonas sp. were present throughout the composting process. | 12 | Performance of the hybrid growth sequencing batch reactor(HG-SBR) for biodegradation of phenol under various toxicity conditions显示文摘Hybrid growth microorganisms in sequencing batch reactors have proven effective for treating the toxic compound phenol, but the toxicity effect under different toxicity conditions has rarely been discussed. Therefore, the performance of the HG-SBR under toxic, acute and chronic organic loading can provide the overall operating conditions of the system. Toxic organic loading(TOL) was monitored during the first 7 hr while introducing50 mg/L phenol to the system. The system was adversely affected with the sudden introduction of phenol to the virgin activated sludge, which caused a low degradation rate and high dissolved oxygen consumption during TOL. Acute organic loading(AOL) had significant effects at high phenol concentrations(600, 800 1000 mg/L). The specific oxygen uptake rate(SOUR) gradually decreased to 4.9 mg O_2/(g MLVSS·hr) at 1000 mg/L of phenol compared to 12.74 mg O_2/(g MLVSS·hr) for 200 mg/L of phenol. The HG-SBR was further monitored during chronic organic loading(COL) over 67 days. | 14 | Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of norovirus gastroenteritis among hospitalized children in Lebanon显示文摘AIM To assess the burden of norovirus(No V) and to determine the diversity of circulating strains among hospitalized children in Lebanon. METHODS Stool samples were collected from children presenting with acute gastroenteritis to six major hospitals in Lebanon. A total of 739 eligible stool samples, testing negative for diarrhea caused by rotavirus as a possible viral pathogen, were collected between January 2011 and June 2013. A standardized questionnaire including demographic, epidemiological and clinical observations was used at the time of hospitalization of children presenting with diarrhea. Viral RNA was extracted from stool samples followed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing of a fragment of the viral protein 1 capsid gene. Multiple sequence alignments were carried out and phylogenetic trees were constructed using the MEGA 6 software.RESULTS Overall, 11.2% of stool samples collected from children aged < 5 years tested positive for No V genogroups Ⅰ(GⅠ) and Ⅱ(GⅡ). GⅡ accounted for 10.6% of the gastroenteritis cases with only five samples being positive for GⅠ(0.7%). The majority of hospitalized children showed symptoms of diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting and fever. Upon sequencing of positive samples and based on their clustering in the phylogenetic tree, 4/5 of GⅠ gastroenteritis cases were designated GⅠ.3 and one case as GⅠ.4. GⅡ.4 was predominantly detected in stool of our study participants(68%). We report a JB-15/KOR/2008 GⅡ.4 Apeldoorn 2008-like variant strain circulating in 2011; this strain was replaced between 2012 and 2013 by a variant sharing homology with the Sydney/NSW0514/2012/AUS GⅡ.4 Sydney 2012 and Sydney 2012/FRA GⅡ.4 strains. We also report the co-circulation of non-GⅡ.4 genotypes among hospitalized children. | 16 | Antimycobacterial natural products from Moroccan medicinal plants: Chemical composition, bacteriostatic and bactericidal profile of Thymus satureioides and Mentha pulegium essential oils显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the susceptibility of Mycobacterium aurum and Mycobacterium smegmatis in vitro to the essential oils obtained from two medicinal plants: Thymus satureioides(T. satureioides) and Mentha pulegium(M. pulegium), and to study their chemical composition.Methods: The aerial parts of T. satureioides and M. pulegium(leaves and stems) were hydro-distillated using a Clevenger-type apparatus and essential oils were analyzed and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Antimycobacterial screening of essential oils was performed on the basis of the inhibition zone diameter by disc diffusion method against two mycobacterial strains whereas the minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration were determined by using the micro-dilution method.Results: Chemical analysis of their aerial part's essential oils gave as major compounds,borneol(34.26%), carvacrol(31.21%) and thymol(3.71%) for T. satureioides and R(+)-pulegone(75.48%), carvone(6.66%) and dihydrocarvone(4.64%) for M. pulegium.Thereafter their antimycobacterial effect evaluation, using the micro-dilution method,indicated that minimal inhibitory concentration values of T. satureioides essential oil ranged from 0.062% to 0.015%(v/v) and from 0.125% to 0.031%(v/v) for M. pulegium respectively against Mycobacterium aurum and Mycobacterium smegmatis.Conclusions: It is clearly evident from the results obtained that the Moroccan medicinal plants have great potential to be used as anti-tuberculosis agents. | 18 | Geochemical characteristics of Holocene sediments from Chuadanga district, Bangladesh: Implications for weathering, climate, redox conditions, provenance and tectonic setting显示文摘The present research deals with the geochemical characteristics of the Holocene sediments from Alamdanga area, Chuadanga district, Bangladesh. Main goals of the study are to delineate source rock characteristics, degree of chemical weathering and sorting processes and behavior of redox conditions during deposition of the sediments. Geochemical characteristics of the sediments show comparatively a wide variation in accordance with stratigraphy in their major element contents(e.g. Si O2 69.46–82.13, Al2O3 2.28–8.88 in wt%), reflecting the distinctive provenance and in part an unstable period in terms of tectonic activity. Geochemical classification of the sediments shows mostly sub-arkose with few sub-litharenites. Some major and trace elements display comprehensible correlation with Al2O3 confirming their possible hydraulic fractionation. The chemical index of alteration(CIA*), W* index, index of compositional variability(ICV), plagioclase index of alteration(PIA*) values and the ratio of Si O2/Al2O3, suggest low degrees of chemical weathering in the source areas as well as immature to moderately mature the sediments. The sediments suggest semi-arid climatic trends within oxic deltaic depositional conditions during the Holocene, at 3–12 ka. Whole rock geochemistry and discrimination diagrams demonstrate the continental signature derivatives, which might have been derived from the felsic to intermediate igneous rocks(granitic plutonic rocks) as well as from quartzose sedimentary/metamorphic provenance. These typical sources are present in a vast region of the Himalayan belt and catchment areas of Ganges.
