| 1 | Using Kalman filter algorithm for short-term traffic flow prediction in a connected vehicle environment显示文摘We develop a Kalman filter for predicting traffic flow at urban arterials based on data obtained from con-nected vehicles. The proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and offers a real-time prediction since it invokes the connected vehicle data just before the prediction period. Moreover, it can predict the traffic flow for various pene-tration rates of connected vehicles (the ratio of the number of connected vehicles to the total number of vehicles). At first, the Kalman filter equations are calibrated using data derived from Vissim traffic simulator for different penetra-tion rates, different fluctuating arrival rates of vehicles and various signal settings. Then the filter is evaluated for a variety of traffic scenarios generated in Vissim simulator. We evaluate the performance of the algorithm for different penetration rates under several traffic situations using some statistical measures. | 3 | Synergistic effect of Al and Gd on enhancement of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys显示文摘The effect of Gd/Al ratio on the properties of as-cast Mg-Gd-Al-Zn alloys was investigated by changing the chemical composition from that of AZ61 to GZ61. At the ratio of 1, the Al_2 Gd phase becomes predominant and Mg_(17)Al_(12) is hardly seen in the microstructure. As a potent inoculant, the Al_2Gd phase resulted in intense grain refinement and enhancement of strength, ductility and toughness. For instance, the tensile strength and elongation to failure of Mg-3Gd-3Al-1Zn alloy were enhanced by ~4% and 180% compared with those of AZ61 alloy, respectively. However, at high Gd/Al ratios, the Al_2Gd phase was replaced by(Mg,Al)_3Gd and Mg5 Gd phases and very large grain sizes were achieved, which led to poor tensile properties and the appearance of cleavage facets on the fracture surfaces. Therefore, it can be deduced that the presence of Gd and Al, in appropriate amounts to reach Gd/Al ratio of ~ 1, is required for the achievement of grain refinement, good ductility, high strength, and the appearance of ductile fracture surfaces in the Mg-Gd-Al-Zn system.Conclusively, the Mg-Gd-Al-Zn alloys can be considered as a new class of structural magnesium alloy and it is superior to both AZ(Mg-Al-Zn) and GZ(Mg-Gd-Zn) series of alloys. | Bita Pourbahari Masoud Emamy Hamed Mirzadeh | 2017 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2017,27,2: | 5 |
| 4 | Achalasia and thyroid disease显示文摘AIM: To investigate some possible etiologies of achalasia by screening patients with achalasia for some autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disease. METHODS: We examined 30 known cases of achalasia (20 females, 10 males). Their age ranged 15-70 years. All of them were referred to our institute for treatment. Their sera were evaluated to detect some possible associations with rheumatoid disease, thyroid disease, inflammatory process, anemia, etc. RESULTS: Seven out of 30 patients (23%) had thyroid disease including four patients with hypothyroidism (13.3%), two patients with hyperthyroidism (6.6%), and one had only thyroid nodule but was in euthyroid state (3.3%). Two of these hypothyroid patients had no related clinical symptoms (subclinical) and two had clinical manifestations of hypothyroidism. There were no correlations between the intensity of thyroid diseases and the severity of achalasia symptoms. CONCLUSION: The etiology of achalasia is unknown although autoimmunity has been implicated and is supported by several studies. | 5 | Interactive effects of drought stress and chitosan application on physiological characteristics and essential oil yield of Thymus daenensis Celak显示文摘Thymus daenensis, a perennial herb, is often grown in areas that experience drought conditions during its growing period. Application of chitosan may compensate for the negative impact of drought stress on the yield of oil and secondary metabolites in Thymus.The interactive effects of foliar application of chitosan and drought stress on dry matter,essential oil yield, and selected physiological characteristics including photosynthetic pigments, osmotic adjustment, and lipid peroxidation of Thymus were investigated in a two-year study from 2014 to 2015. Treatments consisted of 0, 200, and 400(iL L'1 chitosan applied to plants grown under field capacity, mild drought stress(50% field capacity), and severe drought stress(25% field capacity). Dry matter yield decreased substantially as drought stress intensified. However, essential oil content increased under stress conditions,with the highest essential oil yield obtained from plants under mild drought stress. Foliar application of chitosan compensated to some extent for dry matter and oil yield reduction of plants grown under drought stress. The highest essential oil yield(1.52 g plant-1) was obtained by application of 400 \iL L_1 chitosan under the mild stress condition in 2015 when plants were mature. | 9 | Factors associated with recurrence of clubfoot treated by the Ponseti method显示文摘AIM To assess several associated factors on the recurrence of clubfoot after successful correction by the Ponseti method. METHODS A total of 115 children with 196 clubfeet deformities, treated by the Ponseti method, were evaluated. Demographic data, family history of clubfoot in firstdegree relatives, maternal educational level and brace compliance were enquired. Based on their medical files, the characteristics of the patients at the time of presentation such as age, possible associated neuromuscular disease or especial syndrome, severity of the deformity according to the Dimeglio grade and Pirani score, residual deformity after previous Ponseti method and number of casts needed for the correction were recorded.RESULTS There were 83 boys(72.2%) and 32 girls(27.8%) with a male to female ratio of 2.6. The mean age at the initiation of treatment was 5.4 d(range: 1 to 60 d). The average number of casts applied to achieve complete correction of all clubfoot deformities was 4.2. Follow-up range was 11 to 60 mo. In total, 39 feet had recurrence with a minimum Dimeglio grade of 1 or Pirani score of 0.5 at the follow-up visit. More recurrence was observed in non-idiopathic clubfoot deformities(P = 0.001), noncompliance to wear braces(P < 0.001), low educational level of mother(P = 0.033), increased number of casts(P < 0.001), and more follow-up periods(P < 0.001). No increase in the possibility of recurrence was observed when the previous unsuccessful casting was further treated using the Ponseti method(P = 0.091). Also, no significant correlation was found for variables of age(P = 0.763), Dimeglio grade(P = 0.875), and Pirani score(P = 0.624) obtaining at the beginning of the serial casting. | 11 | Mechanical and wear properties of Al-Al_3Mg_2 nanocomposites prepared by mechanical milling and hot pressing显示文摘β-Al3Mg2 intermetallic was used as a reinforcing agent to improve the mechanical properties of an aluminum matrix. Different amounts of Al3Mg2 nanoparticles (ranging from 0wt% to 20wt%) were milled with aluminum powders in a planetary ball mill for 10 h. Consolidation was conducted by uniaxial pressing at 400℃ under a pressure of 600 MPa for 2 h. Microstructural characterization confirms the uniform distribution of Al3Mg2 nanoparticles within the matrix. The effects of nano-sized Al3Mg2 content on the wear and mechanical properties of the composites were also investigated. The results show that as the Al3Mg2 content increases to higher levels, the hardness, compressive strength, and wear resistance of the nanocomposites increase significantly, whereas the relative density and ductility decrease. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of worn surfaces reveals that a transition in wear mechanisms occurs from delamination to abrasive wear by the addition of Al3Mg2 nanoparticles to the matrix. | A.
