| 1 | Hepatitis B virus genotypes and lamivudine resistance mutations in Jordan显示文摘AIM:To investigate and identify prevalent hepatitis B virus(HBV) genotypes and to explore lamivudine-resistant mutations among treated and untreated patients in Jordan.METHODS:A total of 107 cases with chronic hepatitis B were recruited from different medical centers in Jordan.Serological tests were preformed for all cases using a microparticle enzyme immunoassay.HBV Genotyping was performed for 70 cases using Line probe genotyping assay.The YMDD mutations were explored for 20 cases(4 were lamivudine naive) using the INNO-LiPA HBV DR assay.RESULTS:Genotype D was the only detected genotype.A total of 6 YMDD mutations were detected in 5 treated patients(31%) while one mutation was detected in the naive patients.Seventeen percent of cases were positive for HBeAg and had statistically significant higher levels of serum aminotransferases.CONCLUSION:HBV genotype D appears to be the only circulating type in Jordanian patients.The YMDD mutations were detected in 31% of lamivudine-treated cases with similar patterns to those found in the literature.We also found a relatively low prevalence of HBeAg expression among examined cases(17%).Awareness of these serologic,genotypic and resistance patterns might help in the formulation of management plans and for predicting clinical outcomes.Further larger scale studies are needed to confirm our results and to examine possible associations among clinical,serologic,and genetic patterns of HBV infections in Jordan. | Hani A Masaadeh Wail A Hayajneh Enayat A Alqudah | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,47: | 10 |
| 2 | 抗菌剂效果和 Zataria multiflora Boiss 的香精油的物理化学的性质显示文摘 <正>Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial effect and physicochemical properties of essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss.Methods:Antibacterial activity of essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss was assessed by agar disc diffusion and minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) was tested by E test.Results:The essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss was effective on pathogenic bacteria particularly Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus).The MIC values of the target cultures ranged from 0.39 mg/mL to 1.56 mg/mL.The physicochemical properties like effects of pH, temperature,detergents,and enzymes on the activity of essential oil from Zataria multiflora Boiss were also determined.The essential oil was quite stable to temperature as tested against 5. aureus and Escherichia coli(E.coli).The essential oil was very stable over a wide range of pH. | 4 | Plasma D-dimer level in early and late-onset neonatal sepsis显示文摘BACKGROUND Neonatal sepsis is a life-threatening disease.Early diagnosis is essential,but no single marker of infection has been identified.Sepsis activates a coagulation cascade with simultaneous production of the D-dimers due to lysis of fibrin.Ddimer test reflects the activation of the coagulation system.AIM To assess the D-dimer plasma level,elaborating its clinicopathological value in neonates with early-onset and late-onset neonatal sepsis.METHODS The study was a prospective cross-sectional study that included ninety neonates;divided into three groups:Group I:Early-onset sepsis(EOS);Group II:Late-onset sepsis(LOS);and GroupⅢ:Control group.We diagnosed neonatal sepsis according to our protocol.C-reactive protein(CRP)and D-dimer assays were compared between EOS and LOS and correlated to the causative microbiological agents.RESULTS D-dimer was significantly higher in septic groups with a considerably higher number of cases with positive D-dimer.Neonates with LOS had substantially higher levels of D-dimer than EOS,with no significant differences in CRP.Neonates with LOS had a significantly longer hospitalization duration and higher gram-negative bacteriemia and mortality rates than EOS(P<0.01).Gramnegative bacteria have the highest D-dimer levels(Acinetobacter,Klebsiella,and Pseudomonas)and CRP(Serratia,Klebsiella,and Pseudomonas);while gram-positive sepsis was associated with relatively lower levels.D-dimer had a significant negative correlation with hemoglobin level and platelet count;and a significant positive correlation with CRP,hospitalization duration,and mortality rates.The best-suggested cut-off point for D-dimer in neonatal sepsis was 0.75 mg/L,giving a sensitivity of 72.7%and specificity of 86.7%.The D-dimer assay has specificity and sensitivity comparable to CRP in the current study.CONCLUSION The current study revealed a significant diagnostic value for D-dimer in neonatal sepsis.D-dimer can be used as an adjunct to other sepsis markers to increase the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosing neonatal sepsis. | Mohammed Al-Biltagi Ehab M Hantash Mohammed Ramadan El-Shanshory Enayat Aly Badr Mohamed Zahra Manar Hany Anwar | 2022 | World Journal of Critical Care Medicine2022,11,3: | 2 |

| 9 | Neuroprotection by misoprostol against rotenone-induced neurotoxicity in rat brain显示文摘Objective: To investigate the effect of the prostaglandin E1 analogue misoprostol on oxidative stress and neurodegeration caused by subcutaneous rotenone administration in rats. Methods:Rotenone was administered in a dose of 1.5 mg/kg every other day for 2 weeks. Starting from the 1 st day of rotenone injection, rats were subcutaneously treated with misoprostol at doses of10, 100 or 1 000 μg/kg. Rats were evaluated for brain lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde:MDA), reduced glutathione(GSH), nitric oxide(NO) levels, and paraoxonase-1(PON-1) activity.The concentrations of the anti-apoptotic protein B cell/lymphoma-2(Bcl-2) were determined in the striatum. Histopathologic examination and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) in the cerebral cortex and striatum were also performed. Results: Compared with the vehicle-treated group, rotenone caused a significant increase in brain lipid proxidation(MDA)by 61%(P<0.05) accompanied by an increase in NO by 73.1%(P<0.05) and a decrease in GSH concentration by 29.4%(P<0.05). In addition, brain PON-1 activity significantly decreased by63.0%(P<0.05) and striatal Bcl-2 significantly decreased by 27.9%(P<0.05) with respect to the corresponding control value. Brain sections from rotenone treated rats showed extensive dark pyknotic and apoptotic nuclei in neurons, shrunken cytoplasm and perineuronal vacuolation.Rotenone also caused pronounced expression of iNOS in the cerebral cortex and striatum.Treatment with misoprostol at doses of 100 and 1 000 μg/kg resulted in decreased brain MDA(by 16.5%-23.0%)(P<0.05) and NO levels(by 37.1%-40.7%)(P<0.05) and increased GSH concentrations(by 18.8%-30.1%)(P<0.05). PON-1 activity was significantly increased by80.0%-114.8%(P<0.05) by misoprostol at 100 and 1 000 μg/kg, respectively. In addition,misoprostol treatment restored striatal Bcl-2 concentrations to its normal value. Misoprostol treatment resulted in markedly reduced brain injury and decreased iNOS expression in the cerebral cortex and striatum of rotenone intoxicated rats.
