TNBCs are biologically aggressive, although some reports suggest that they respond to chemotherapy better than other types of breast cancer, prognosis remains poor. | 3 | Early diagnostic evaluation of miR-122 and miR-224 as biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the common lethal types of tumor all over the world.The lethality of HCC accounts for many reasons.One of them,the lack of reliable diagnostic markers at the early stage,in this context,serum miRNAs became promising diagnostic biomarkers.Herein,we aimed to identify the predictive value of two miRNAs(miR-122 and miR-224)in plasma of patients with HCC preceded by chronic HCV infection.Taqman miRNA assays specific for hsa-miR-122 and hsa-miR-224 were used to assess the expression levels of the chosen miRNAs in plasma samples collected from three groups;40 patients with HCC related to HCV,40 with CHC patients and 20 healthy volunteers.This study revealed that the mean plasma values of miRNA-122 were significantly lower among HCC group when compared to CHC and control groups(P<0.001).Whereas,miR-224 mean plasma values were significantly higher among HCC group when compared to both CHC group and control group.Moreover,it was found that miR-122 can predict development of HCC at cut-off value<0.67(RQ)and(AUC Z 0.98,P<0.001).As regards miR-224,it can predict development of HCC at cut-off value>1.2(RQ)and(AUC Z 0.93,P<0.001),while the accuracy of AFP to diagnose HCC was(AUC:0.619;P Z 0.06).In conclusion,the expression plasma of miR-122 and miR-224 could be used as noninvasive biomarkers for the early prediction of developing HCC at the early stage. | Khalda S.Amr Hanan Abd Elmawgoud Atia Rehab Abd Elazeem Elbnhawy Wafaa M.Ezzat | 2017 | Genes & Diseases2017,4,4: | 17 |

| 5 | Biomass-Based Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Aboveground Architectural Parameter Models显示文摘To quantify the relationships between rice plant architecture parameters and the corresponding organ biomass, and to research on functional structural plant models of rice plant, this paper presented a biomass-based model of aboveground architectural parameters of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the young seedling stage, designed to explain effects of cultivars and environmental conditions on rice aboveground morphogenesis at the individual leaf level. Various model variables, including biomass of blade and blade length, were parameterized for rice based on data derived from an outdoor experiment with rice cv. Liangyou 108, 86You 8, Nanjing 43, and Yangdao 6. The organ dimensions of rice aboveground were modelled taking corresponding organ biomass as an independent variable. Various variables in rice showed marked consistency in observation and simulation, suggesting possibilities for a general rice architectural model in the young seedling stage. Our descriptive model was suitable for our objective. However, they can set the stage for connection to physiological model via biomass and development of functional structural rice models (FSRM), and start with the localized production and partitioning of assimilates as affected by abiotic growth factors. | 7 | Phytotherapy in diabetes: Review on potential mechanistic perspectives显示文摘Diabetes mellitus(DM) is a widely spread epidemic dis ease that results from the absence of insulin, decreased secretion and/or impaired function. Since DM is a multi factorial disease, the available pharmaceuticals, despite their sensible treatment, target mostly one pathway to control hyperglycemia and encounter several side effects. Therefore, new therapeutic paradigms aim to hit several pathways using only one agent. Tradition ally, antidiabetic plants and/or their active constituents may fulfill this need. More than 200 species of plants possess antidiabetic properties which were evaluated mostly by screening tests without digging far for the exact mode of action. Searching among the differen literature resources and various database and in view o the above aspects, the present article provides a com prehensive review on the available antidiabetic plants that have been approved by pharmacological and clini cal evaluations, and which their mechanism(s) of ac tion is assured. These plants are categorized according to their proved mode of action and are classified into those that act by inhibiting glucose absorption from in testine, increasing insulin secretion from the pancreasinhibiting glucose production from hepatocytes, or enhancing glucose uptake by adipose and muscle tissues. | 10 | Concomitant-chemoradiotherapy-associated oral lesions in patients with oral squamous-cell carcinoma显示文摘Objective:Oral squamous-cell carcinoma(OSCC)accounts for >90% of oral cancers affecting adults mostly between the fourth to seventh decades of life.The most common OSCC treatment is concomitant chemoradiotherapy(CCRT)having both locoregional and distant control,but CCRT has acute and chronic toxic effects on adjacent normal tissue.This study aimed to determine the side effects of CCRT on the oral mucosa and to characterize the clinicopathology of oral lesions in patients with OSCC.Methods:This descriptive,cross-sectional study was certified by the Ethical Review Committee(UHS/Education/126-12/2728)of the University of Health Sciences,Lahore,Pakistan.OSSC patients(n=81)with various histological subtypes,grades,and stages were recruited,and findings on their oral examination were recorded.These patients received 70,90,and 119 Gy of radiotherapy dosages in combination with the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil.Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0.Results:The most common presentation of OSCC was a nonhealing ulcer(63%) involving tongue(55.6%).Clinical findings included mucositis(92.6%)and xerostomia of mild,moderate,and severe degrees in 11.1%,46.9%,and 35.8% cases,respectively.Ulcers(87.7%),palpable lymph nodes(64.2%),limited mouth opening(64.2%)and fistula(40.7%) were also observed.In females,the association of radiotherapy dosage with limited mouth opening,xerostomia,and histological grading was statistically significant(P<0.05).The association of chemotherapy drugs with xerostomia(P=0.003)was also statistically significant.Conclusions:CCRT induced mucositis,xerostomia,and trismus in patients with OSCC. | Sadia Minhas Muhammad Kashif Wasif Altaf Nadeem Afzal Abdul Hanan Nagi | 2017 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2017,14,2: | 6 |
| 11 | Antioxidant Effect of Sepia Ink Extract on Extrahepatic Cholestasis Induced by Bile Duct Ligation in Rats显示文摘Objective The aim of our study was to assess the complications of hepatic fibrosis associated with bile duct ligation and the potential curative role of sepia ink extract in hepatic damage induced by bile duct ligation. Methods Rattus norvegicus rats were divided into 3 groups: Sham-operated group, model rats that underwent common bile duct ligation(BDL), and BDL rats treated orally with sepia ink extract(200 mg/kg body weight) for 7, 14, and 28 d after BDL. Results There was a significant reduction in hepatic enzymes, ALP, GGT, bilirubin levels, and oxidative stress in the BDL group after treatment with sepia ink extract. Collagen deposition reduced after sepia ink extract treatment as compared to BDL groups, suggesting that the liver was repaired. Histopathological examination of liver treated with sepia ink extract showed moderate degeneration in the hepatic architecture and mild degeneration in hepatocytes as compared to BDL groups. | 15 | L-Plastin deficiency produces increased trabecular bone due to attenuation of sealing ring formation and osteoclast dysfunction显示文摘Bone resorption requires the formation of complex, actin-rich cytoskeletal structures. During the early phase of sealing ring formation by osteoclasts, L-plastin regulates actin-bundling to form the nascent sealing zones(NSZ). Here, we show that L-plastin knockout mice produce osteoclasts that are deficient in the formation of NSZs, are hyporesorptive, and make superficial resorption pits in vitro. Transduction of TAT-fused full-length L-plastin peptide into osteoclasts from L-plastin knockout mice rescued the formation of nascent sealing zones and sealing rings in a time-dependent manner. This response was not observed with mutated full-length L-plastin(Ser-5 and-7 to Ala-5 and-7) peptide. In contrast to the observed defect in the NSZ, L-plastin deficiency did not affect podosome formation or adhesion of osteoclasts in vitro or in vivo. Histomorphometry analyses in 8-and 12-week-old female L-plastin knockout mice demonstrated a decrease in eroded perimeters and an increase in trabecular bone density, without a change in bone formation by osteoblasts. This decrease in eroded perimeters supports that osteoclast function is attenuated in L-plastin knockouts. Micro-CT analyses confirmed a marked increase in trabecular bone mass. In conclusion, female L-plastin knockout mice had increased trabecular bone density due to impaired bone resorption by osteoclasts. | 19 | Adjuvant Pelvic Radiotherapy vs.Sequential Chemoradiotherapy for High-Risk StageⅠ-ⅡEndometrial Carcinoma显示文摘Objective To explore if the addition of adjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin to radiotherapy confers an advantage for overall survival(OAS),and progression free survival(PFS);to assess the incidence of relapses over standard pelvic radiotherapy; and to evaluate the related toxicity in high-risk stageⅠ-Ⅱendometrial carcinoma Methods Medical records were reviewed to identify high-risk stageⅠ-Ⅱendometrial carcinoma cases treated in the Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine department between 2002 and 2008 with adjuvant radiotherapy alone(armⅠ)(57 patients) or with sequential carboplatin(AUC5-6) and paclitaxel(135-175 mg/m^2) with radiotherapy(armⅡ)(51 patients).Radiotherapy was performed through the four-field box technique at doses of 45-50 Gy(1.8 Gy/day×5 days/week). Results The toxicity was manageable and predominantly hematologic with a grade 3 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia in 9.8% and 6% of the patients in armⅠand armⅡ,respectively,without febrile neutropenia.All patients experienced hair loss. Chemoradiotherapy arm was associated with a lower incidence rate of relapse(9.8% vs.22.7% ).After a median follow-up period of 48 months,the 5-year OAS and PFS rates for chemoradiotherapy-treated patients were significantly more favorable than those who did not receive chemotherapy(P=0.02 and 0.03,respectively).In armⅠ,the OAS and PFS rates were 73.7% and 66.7% compared with those in armⅡ,whose rates were 90.2% and 84.3% . Conclusions Adjuvant chemoradiation with paclitaxel and carboplatin improved the survival rates and decreased the recurrence rates in patients with high-risk stageⅠ-Ⅱendometrial carcinoma.Chemotherapy was associated with an acceptable rate of toxicity.
